English-Chinese Translation of Science and Technology Texts Based on the Differences Between Chinese and Western Modes of Thinking

As a tool for human communication,the use of language is affected by the way of thinking in cross-cultural communication.Due to the differences between Chinese and Western cultures,the way of thinking varies under the influence of such cultural differences.In the process of translation,the influence of the different thinking mode on translation activities cannot be ignored.At present,a lot of studies and researches have focused on the influence of Chinese and Western thinking mode on translation.However,it is still worthwhile to study what specific influence the difference between Chinese and Western thinking mode will exert on the translation process of science texts and what kind of measure should be taken to solve the negative influence brought by the differences when we are translating.This paper aims to discuss the influence of thinking differences between Chinese and Western countries on the process of English-Chinese translation of science and technology from the perspectives of long sentences,passive voice and nominalization,and how the translators should appropriately adjust their thinking pattern and use reasonable skills to eliminate the potential negative interference caused by the difference and achieve a better transformation between English and Chinese.

Vocabulary Gap in English-Chinese Translation

Due to the differences in living environments,customs etc.,vocabulary gap often appears in the process of English-Chinese translation.Understanding the causes of it and finding the ways to solve them are very important.

On Errors in Chinese-English Translation of Public Signs

With more attentions being paid to the research of the Chinese-English translation of public signs,errors and mistakes can be frequently observed in some places and occasions due to different cultural backgrounds as well as diversified function of public signs.For that reason,the author venture to analyses the problems existing in Chinese-English translation of public signs on the level of linguistic and culture such as spelling errors,harsh tones and so on.Meanwhile the author offer some strategies and principles of translation based on the communicative translation method and as well as the quality of translators perspectives,including the methods of functional priority,of utilization of Pin Yin and so on,hoping to optimize the quality of the public signs translation so as to publicize China and promote the image of China and arose the attention and awareness of the translators.

Towards On-line Automated Semantic Scoring of English-Chinese Translation

Described and exemplified a semantic scoring system of students' on-line English-Chinese translation. To achieve accurate assessment, the system adopted a comprehensive method which combines semantic scoring with keyword matching scoring. Four kinds of words-verbs, adjectives, adverbs and "the rest" including nouns, pronouns, idioms, prepositions, etc., are identified after parsing. The system treats different words tagged with different part of speech differently. Then it calculated the semantic similarity between these words of the standard versions and those of students' translations by the distinctive differences of the semantic features of these words with the aid of HowNet. The first semantic feature of verbs and the last semantic features of adjectives and adverbs are calculated. "The rest" is scored by keyword matching. The experiment results show that the semantic scoring system is applicable in fulfilling the task of scoring students' on-line English-Chinese translations.

An On-line Assessment System for English-Chinese Translation

On-line assessment of English-Chinese translation is a challenging task as it involves natural language processing.YanFa,an on-line assessment system for English-Chinese translation,is a pilot research project into scoring student's translation on-line.Based on the theory of translation equivalence,an algorithm called "conceptual similarity matching" was developed.YanFa can assess students' translation on-line timely,generate test papers automatically,offer standard versions of translation,and the scores of each sentence to students.The evaluation proves that YanFa is practical compared with the scores given by experts.

A Study on English-Chinese Translation of Business Contracts Based on the Functional Equivalence Theory

This study explores the translation of business English contracts from English to Chinese from the perspective of functional equivalence.The functional equivalence theory involves three aspects of functional equivalence:lexical equivalence,sentential equivalence,and textual equivalence.As far as translation is concerned,translators adopt different translation techniques for different types of texts,striving to achieve equivalence in lexical,sentential,and textual functions.Therefore,translators are to recognize the different characteristics of business English contracts and highlight English translation styles and characteristics with the help of the functional equivalence theory.

An Analysis of English-Chinese Translation Methods and Skills of UCP600 under the Three Rules of Skopos Theory

Documentary credits play an important role in China's foreign trade settlements and UCP600 is the current international uniform customs and practice for documentary credits. This paper takes UCP600 as the analytical text and combines the three rules of Skopos Theory to analyze and summarize English-Chinese translation methods and skills of UCP600, aiming to help translators especially participated in foreign trade, to have a better understanding of E-C translation of UCP600 and give them some inspira-tions on understanding and translating texts similiar to UCP600, hence making settlements of documentary credits smoothier in Chinese foreign trade.

Incorrect Translation of Polysemy in English-Chinese Translation

It is common that translators always meet polysemy in the process of translation work. Polysemy has become a difficultpart in English-Chinese translation and there are many incorrect translations of polysemy in English-Chinese translation. In orderto resolve this translation difficult, this essay mainly analyzes the reasons of the form of polysemy and the reason causes the incor-rect translation and based on that analysis finally put forward some advice.

On Translation Errors and Culture Deviations in China English from Angle of Language Inclusivity

Any language must have the inclusivity of its own,otherwise it can hardly get developed. The English language has got the most powerful inclusivity, which makes itself the lingua franca of the world. However, as one of language varieties, China English develops with a lot of translation errors and culture deviations, which makes itself doubtful. As a result, a view comes into being that none errors can be permitted in China English, otherwise China English couldn't exist. But finally, it turns out that translation errors and culture deviations in China English are acceptable due to the language inclusivity.

Review of Research on English Translation of Chinese Running Sentences

In order to convey complete meanings,there is a phenomenon in Chinese of using multiple running sentences.Xu Jingning(2023,p.66)states,“In communication,a complete expression of meaning often requires more than one clause,which is common in human languages.”Domestic research on running sentences includes discussions on defining the concept and structural features of running sentences,sentence properties,sentence pattern classifications and their criteria,as well as issues related to translating running sentences into English.This article primarily focuses on scholarly research into the English translation of running sentences in China,highlighting recent achievements and identifying existing issues in the study of running sentence translation.However,by reviewing literature on the translation of running sentences,it is found that current research in the academic community on non-core running sentences is limited.Therefore,this paper proposes relevant strategies to address this issue.

Error Analysis of Chinglish in Translation of Publicity Literature

Chinglish is one of the major problems affecting the quality of Chinese-English Translation.And the negative effect of Chinglish is much more serious in translation of publicity literature,which induces bad impression on our country.This paper is an attempt to discuss the causes and manifestations of Chinglish in translation of publicity literature from the perspectives of words,phrases and sentence structure with the means of error analysis.

Application of a Web Search Engine in Translating Business Terms in English-Chinese Dictionaries

Web search engines are important tools for lexicography.This paper takes translation of business terms("e-commerce"and"e-business")as an example to illustrate the application of web search engines in English-Chinese dictionary translation,including the methods of(1)finding the potential Chinese equivalents of the English business terms,and(2)selecting typical and proper Chinese equivalents in accordance with the frequencies and the meanings of the English business terms respectively.

Effect of Gaussian Noise Amplitude on Translation Error Estimated Using Double-Wayland Algorithm

The Wayland algorithm has been improved in order to evaluate the degree of visible determinism for dynamical systems that generate time series. The objective of this study is to show that the Double-Wayland algorithm can distinguish between time series generated by a deterministic process and those generated by a stochastic process. The authors conducted numerical analysis of the van der Pol equation and a stochastic differential equation as a deterministic process and a Ganssian stochastic process, respectively. In case of large S/N ratios, the noise term did not affect the translation error derived from time series data, but affected that from the temporal differences of time series. In case of larger noise amplitudes, the translation error from the differences was calculated to be approximately 1 using the Double-Wayland algorithm, and it did not vary in magnitude. Furthermore, the translation error derived from the differenced sequences was considered stable against noise. This novel algorithm was applied to the detection of anomalous signals in some fields of engineering, such as the analysis of railway systems and bio-signals.

Error Analysis of CET-4 Translation Produced by Vocational & Techni⁃ cal College Students and the Backwash Effect of English Teaching

CET-4 is a national standardized English proficiency test designed and developed by the National College English Ex⁃amination Committee.The purpose of the test is to accurately measure the comprehensive English application ability of college stu⁃dents in China.The more important the test,the more obvious its backwash effect.With the increase of the proportion of subjective questions in CET-4,teachers should pay more attention to the transfer of skills and correct English expression while teaching the basic knowledge of English.In particular,the students in vocational and technical colleges are weak in English abilities,and their errors in translation are even more numerous and varied.Therefore,this study will analyze the translation errors produced by 200 vocational and technical college students in CET-4 of June 2019.By interviewing and investigating the students’actual situation of English learning,tips and proposals on backwash effect on teaching can be achieved.

基于Back-translation的语法错误纠正

语法错误纠正,面临着较为严重的数据稀疏问题,这给机器翻译方法在该任务上的应用带来了直接的困难。本文首次提出在back-translation阶段采用sampling解码策略,并对比基于不同解码策略合成的伪平行句对给训练语法错误纠正模型带来的影响。在标准数据集CoNLL-2014 Test Set上的实验结果表明,本文提出的方法能显著提升语法错误纠正的性能。

On C-E Translation of the Web Profilesof Universities from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

The web profile of a university is a fast way for the outside to know about the university,and a gooduniversity web profile and its translation can not only establish a good image for the university,but also atractoutstanding students,knowledgeable scholars and successful entrepreneurs to visit and promote humanities andacademic exchanges.At present,the existing researches mostly focus on the national“985 Project”or"21l Project"universities.But it is believed that it does not represent the overall level of construction of English web profiles inChinese universities.Translation problems are even more common in some ordinary science and technologyuniversities as well as normal universities compared with these well-known universities in China.From theperspective of Skopos theory,this paper takes Chinese and English versions of the web profiles of Chineseuniversities as empirical materials and studies the translation of English websites of universities from the aspects oflinguistics,pragmatics and culture.It is expected that the preliminary exploration will be helpful to solve theproblems in CE translation(Chinese-English translation)of the web profiles of universities and to achieve thepurpose of extermal publicity,communication and cooperation.

The Skills of E-C Translation： based on Hillary Clinton＇s Concession Speech

Translation is a conversion process, which helps transform a language message into another language. Based on the source text of Hillary Clinton's concession speech and the Chinese target text, the thesis studies the techniques of English translation and concludes the skills of translation. The purpose is to help students master a variety of English translation methods, to accumulate English communication skills and to improve the comprehensive level of English.

An Evaluation of Inter-Fractional Set-Up Errors in Patients Treated with Distinct Immobilization Equipment for Varying Anatomical Regions

This study aims to evaluate inter-fractional set-up errors in patients treated with distinct immobilization equipment (thermoplastic mask, knee-fix and feet-fix, wing board and vac-lok) for four anatomical regions including brain, head and neck (HN), thorax and pelvis. Data of randomly selected 140 patients who were treated for four anatomical regions were obtained using Hi-Art Helical Tomotherapy (HT) system. Pre-treatment planning was based on automatic registration readings of computed tomography (CT) and mega-voltage computed tomography (MVCT) on a daily basis. Distinct immobilization equipment was used for varying anatomical regions. Individual mean set-up error (M), systematic error (Σ), and random error (σ) values were calculated through daily translational and rotational deviation values. The size of translational, systematic and random error was 1.31 - 4.93 mm for brain, 2.28 - 4.88 mm for HN, 4.04 - 9.90 mm for thorax, and 6.34 - 14.68 mm for pelvis. Rotational values were as follows: 0.06&deg - 0.73&deg for brain, 0.42&deg - 0.6&deg for HN, 0.48&deg - 1.14&deg for thorax and 0.65&deg - 1.05&deg for pelvis. The highest translational, systematic and random error value was obtained from the pelvic regional. The highest standard and random error value in pitch and roll was produced in the rotational direction of the pelvis (0.05° and 0.71°), while the highest error value in yaw was (1.14°) produced from thorax. Inter-fractional set-up errors were most commonly produced in the pelvis, followed by thorax. Our study results suggest that the highest systematic and random errors are found for thorax and pelvis. Distinct immobilization equipment was important in these results. Safety margins around the clinical target volume (CTV) are changeable for different anatomical regions. A future work could be developed to new equipment for immobilization because of the reduced margins CTV.

A Corpus-based Study of the Chinese Translation for the Conditional Clause Pattems in Intemational Legal Instruments

The Chinese translation for international legal instruments is an indispensable part in national political and economic fields. Apart from legal terminology, the syntactical features of international legal instruments also deserve study. They are easy to be seen in the use of some typical sentence patterns, such as long and complex sentence structures, passive voice and provisos or conditional clauses. Based on the parallel English-Chinese international conventions, this paper mainly evaluates the current Chinese translation and summarizes the use frequency and translation strategies for the conditional clause patterns. From the perspective of memetics, sentence patterns can be units of imitation, and the summary of and comments on them and their Chinese translation will promote the transmission across culture and help a legal translator improve his/her expertise, which will eventually be good for successful cooperation in international business.
