To improve oil recovery for low permeability reservoirs, a highly efficient emulsification oil flooding system consisting of anionic surfactant sodium alkyl glucosyl hydroxypropyl sulfonate(APGSHS) and zwitterionic surfactant octadecyl betaine(BS-18) is proposed. The performance of APGSHS/BS-18 mixed surfactant system was evaluated in terms of interfacial tension, emulsification capability, emulsion size and distribution, wettability alteration, temperature-resistance and salt-resistance. The emulsification speed was used to evaluate the emulsification ability of surfactant systems, and the results show that mixed surfactant systems can completely emulsify the crude oil into emulsions droplets even under low energy conditions. Meanwhile, the system exhibits good temperature and salt resistance. Finally, the best oil recovery of 25.45% is achieved for low permeability core by the mixed surfactant system with a total concentration of 0.3 wt%while the molar ratio of APGSHS:BS-18 is 4:6. The current study indicates that the anionic/zwitterionic mixed surfactant system can improve the oil flooding efficiency and is potential candidate for application in low permeability reservoirs.展开更多

The MEOR mechanism and the influence of adsorption, diffusion, metabolism, nutrition, porosity, and permeability are analyzed. The research indicates that different microbes have different efficiencies in EOR and that different culture types play different roles in EOR. The effect of syrup is better than that of glucose, and larger porosity is favorable to the reproduction and growth of microbes, thereby improving the oil recovery. Using crude oil as a single carbon source is more appreciable because of the decrease in cost of oil recovery. At the end of this paper, the development of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the future is discussed.展开更多

A new technique to identify microbes with DNA for MEOR has been established, and useful microbes selected for use in field trials. Behaviors of bacteria activated in the reservoir, oil recovery and water cut, and the viscosity of crude oil produced through huff & puff testing and flooding with molasses-injection tests, have been investigated in situ. CJF-002, which produces biopolysaccharide, is the best among the microbes used for field trials, as it can use molasses as nutrient and produce a small quantity of CO2 and a mass of water-insoluble biopolymer. The metabolic behavior in the reservoir showed that CJF-002 had a good potentiality for MEOR.展开更多

Since primary and secondary recovery methods fail to yield above 20%-40%of original oil in place from these reserves, the need for enhanced oil recovery(EOR) techniques for incremental oil recovery has become imperative. With the challenges presented by the highly heterogeneous carbonate rocks, evaluation of tertiary-stage recovery techniques including chemical EOR(c EOR) has been a high priority for researchers and oil producers. In this review, the latest developments in the surfactant-based c EOR techniques applied in carbonate formations are discussed, contemplating the future direction of existing methodologies. In connection with this, the characteristics of heterogeneous carbonate reservoirs are outlined. Detailed discussion on surfactant-led oil recovery mechanisms and related processes, such as wettability alteration, interfacial tension reduction, microemulsion phase behavior, surfactant adsorption and mitigation, and foams and their applications is presented. Laboratory experiments, as well as field study data obtained using several surfactants, are also included. This extensive discussion on the subject aims to help researchers and professionals in the field to understand the current situation and plan future enterprises accordingly.展开更多

Low-salinity water flooding changes the ion composition or brine salinity for improving oil recovery. Recently, the application of nanoparticles with low-salinity water flooding has shown remarkable results in enhanced oil recovery(EOR). Many studies have been performed on the effect of nanofluids on EOR mechanisms. Their results showed that nanofluids can improve oil recovery when used in low-salinity water flooding. In this work, the effects of injection of low-salinity water and low-salinity nanofluid(prepared by adding SiO_2 nanoparticles to low-salinity water) on oil recovery were investigated. At first, the effects of ions were investigated with equal concentrations in low-salinity water flooding. The experimental results showed that the monovalent ions had better performance than the divalent ions because of them having more negative zeta potential and less ionic strength. Also, low-salinity water flooding recovered 6.1% original oil in place(OOIP) more than the high-salinity flooding. Contact angle measurements demonstrated that low-salinity water could reduce the contact angle between oil and water. Then in the second stage, experiments were continued by adding SiO_2 nanoparticles to the K+ solution which had the highest oil recovery at the first stage. The experimental results illustrated that the addition of Si02 nanoparticles up to 0.05 wt% increased oil recovery by about 4% OOIP more than the low-salinity water flooding.展开更多

CO2 from energy represents about 75% of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for Annex B (Developed) countries, and over 60% of global emissions. Because of impermeable cap rocks hydrocarbon reservoirs are able to sequester CO〉 In addition, due to high-demand for oil worldwide, injection of CO2 is a useful way to enhance oil production. Hence, applying an efficient method to co-optimize CO2 storage and oil production is vital. Lack of suitable optimization techniques in the past led most multi-objective optimization problems to be tackled in the same way as a single objective optimization issue. However, there are some basic differences between the multi and single objective optimization methods. In this study, by using a non- dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) for an oil reservoir, some appropriate scenarios are proposed based on simultaneous gas storage and enhanced oil recovery optimization. The advantages of this method allow us to amend production scenarios after implementing the optimization process, by regarding the variation of economic parameters such as oil price and CO2 tax. This leads to reduced risks and time duration of making new decisions based on upcoming situations.展开更多

In this paper, the effect of temperature, salinity, permeability and connate water were investigated by comparing the produced hydrocarbon curves. Contact angle measurements were taken to confirm the alteration of surface wettability of porous media. Oil recovery was enhanced by increasing the dilution ratio of sea water, and there existed an optimum dilution ratio at which the highest oil recovery was achieved. In addition, temperature had a very significant impact on oil recovery from carbonate rocks. Furthermore, oil recovery from a spontaneous imbibition process was directly proportional to the permeability of the core samples. The presence of connate water saturation inside the porous media facilitated oil production significantly. Also, the oil recovery from porous media was highly dependent on ion repulsion/attraction activity of the rock surface which directly impacts on the wettability conditions. Finally, the highest ion attraction percentage was measured for sodium while there was no significant change in pH for all experiments.展开更多

The ability ofthermophilic anaerobic bacteria to produce gas as the main mechanism in potential MEOR in high salinities of 70-100 g/L was investigated in this study. Maximum gas production of up to 350 mL per 700 mL of salty solution was produced at a salinity of 90 g/L stably during 2-4 days of experiment. The experimental results were upscaled to the Snorre Oilfield, Norway, and simulated using ECLIPSE software for 27 months. The best scenarios showed that the increase in oil recovery on average was at 21% and 17.8% respectively. This study demonstrated that anaerobic bacteria used in biogas plants could be an attractive candidate for MEOR implementation due to their ability to withstand high temperature and salinity, and produce gas in large volumes.展开更多

文摘Boosted by economic development and rising living standards, the world's carbon dioxide emissions remain high.Maintaining temperature rises below 1.5℃ by the end of the century requires rapid global carbon capture and storage implementation. The successful application of carbon capture, utilization, and storage(CCUS)technology in oilfields has become the key to getting rid of this predicament.Foam flooding,as an organic combination of gas and chemical flooding, became popular in the 1950s.Notwithstanding the irreplaceable advantages,as a thermodynamically unstable system, foam's stability has long restricted its development in enhanced oil and gas recovery. With special surface/interface effects and small-size effects, nanoparticles can be used as foam stabilizers to enhance foam stability, thereby improving foam seepage and oil displacement effects in porous media. In this paper, the decay kinetics and the stabilization mechanisms of nanoparticle-reinforced foams were systematically reviewed. The effects of nanoparticle characteristics, including particle concentration, surface wettability, particle size, and type, and reservoir environment factors, including oil, temperature, pressure, and salinity on the foam stabilization ability were analyzed in detail. The seepage and flooding mechanisms of nanoparticle-reinforced foams were summarized as:improving the plugging properties of foams, enhancing the interaction between foams and crude oil,and synergistically adjusting the wettability of reservoir rocks. Finally, the challenges in the practical application of nanoparticle-reinforced foams were highlighted, and the development direction was proposed. The development of nanoparticle-reinforced foam can open the way toward adaptive and evolutive EOR technology, taking one further step towards the high-efficiency production of the petroleum industry.
文摘This paper describes a simple, easy process for screening microorganisms, and introduces a laboratory simulation device and process of microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) , which is a necessary research step for trial in oilfields. At the end of this paper, the development of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the future is discussed.
文摘This paper describes the experience of Jilin oilfield trials for Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR). The metabolic behavior in the reservoir showed that CJF-002 had a good potentiality for MEOR.

文摘Polymer microspheres(PMs),such as polyacrylamide, have been widely applied for enhanced oil recovery(EOR),yet with environmental concerns. Here,we report a microfluid displacement technology containing a bio-based eco-friendly material,i.e.,calcium alginate(CaAlg)microspheres for EOR.Two dominant mechanisms responsible for EOR over Ca Alg fluid have been verified, including the microscopic oil displacement efficacy augmented by regulating capillary force(determined by the joint action of interfacial tension and wettability between different phases)and macroscopic sweep volume increment through profile control and mobility ratio reduction. This comprehensive effectiveness can be further impacted when the CaAlg microsphere is embellished ulteriorly by using appropriate amount of sodium dodecyl sulfonate(SDS).The core flooding and nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)tests demonstrate that CaAlg-SDS microsphere can balance the interphase property regulation(wettability alteration and IFT reduction)and rheology properties, enabling simultaneous profile control and oil displacement.Excessive introduction of SDS will have a negative impact on rheological properties, which is not favored for EOR.Our results show that the involvement of 4-m M SDS will provide the best behavior, with an EOR rate of 34.38%.This cost-effective and environmentally-friendly bio-microspherebased microfluidic displacement technology is expected to achieve“green”oil recovery in future oilfield exploitation.

文摘Polymerflooding is an effective method widely applied for enhancing oil recovery(EOR)by reducing the mobility ratio between theinjected water and crude oil. However, traditional polymers encounter challenges in high salinity reservoirs due to their salt sensitivity.Toovercome this challenge,we synthesized a zwitterion polymer(PAMNS)with salt-induced tackifying property through copolymerization ofacrylamide and a zwitterion monomer, methylacrylamide propyl-N,N-dimethylbutylsulfonate(NS).NS monomer is obtained from thereaction between 1,4-butanesultone and dimethylamino propyl methylacrylamide. In this study, the rheological properties, salt responsiveness, and EOR efficiency of PAMNS were evaluated. Results demonstrate that PAMNS exhibits desirable salt-induced tackifyingcharacteristics, with viscosity increasing up to 2.4 times as the NaCl concentration reaches a salinity of 30×10^(4)mg L^(-1).Furthermore,highvalence ions possess a much stronger effect on enhancing viscosity, manifested as Mg^(2+)>Ca^(2+)>Na^(+).Molecular dynamics simulations(MD)andfluid dynamics experiment results demonstrate that PAMNS molecules exhibit a more stretched state and enhanced intermolecularassociations in high-salinity environments. It is because of the salt-induced tackifying,PAMNS demonstrates superior performance inpolymerflooding experiments under salinity ranges from 5×10^(4)mg L^(-1)to 20×10^(4)mg L^(-1),leading to 10.38–19.83%higher EOR thantraditional polymers.
文摘A significant fraction of the conventional oil reserves globally is in carbonate formations which contain a substantial amount of residual oil. This extensive discussion on the subject aims to help researchers and professionals in the field to understand the current situation and plan future enterprises accordingly.
文摘Low-salinity water injection has been utilized as a promising method for oil recovery in recent years. The experimental results illustrated that the addition of Si02 nanoparticles up to 0.05 wt% increased oil recovery by about 4% OOIP more than the low-salinity water flooding.

文摘Surfactants for enhanced oil recovery are important to study due to their special characteristics like foam generation, lowering interfacial tension between oleic and aqueous phases, and wettability alteration of reservoir rock surfaces.Foam is a good mobility control agent in enhanced oil recovery for improving the mobility ratio. In the present work, the foaming behavior of three nonionic ethoxylated surfactants, namely Tergitol 15-S-7,Tergitol 15-S-9,and Tergitol 15-S-12,was studied experimentally.Among the surfactants,Tergitol 15-S-12 shows the highest foamability. The effect of Na Cl concentration and synthetic seawater on foaming behavior of the surfactants was investigated by the test-tube shaking method. The critical micelle concentrations of aqueous solutions of the different nonionic surfactants were measured at 300 K.It was found that the critical micelle concentrations of all surfactants also increased with increasing ethylene oxide number.Dynamic light scattering experiments were performed to investigate the micelle sizes of the surfactants at their respective critical micelle concentrations.Core flooding experiments were carried out in sand packs using the surfactant solutions. It was found tha t22% additional oil was recovered in the case of all the surfactants over secondary water flooding.Tergitol 15-S-12exhibited the maximum additional oil recovery which is more than 26%after water injection.
文摘Climate researchers have observed that the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere have been growing significantly over the past century. This leads to reduced risks and time duration of making new decisions based on upcoming situations.

文摘Low permeability oil and gas resources are rich and have great potential all over the world, which has gradually become the main goal of oil and gas development. However, after traditional primary and secondary exploitation, there is still a large amount of remaining oil that has not been recovered. Therefore, in recent years, enhanced oil recovery(EOR) technologies for low permeability reservoirs have been greatly developed to further improve crude oil production. This study presents a comprehensive review of EOR technologies in low permeability reservoirs with an emphasis on gas flooding, surfactant flooding, nanofluid flooding and imbibition EOR technologies. In addition, two kinds of gel systems are introduced for conformance control in low permeability reservoirs with channeling problems. Finally, the technical challenges, directions and outlooks of EOR in low permeability reservoirs are addressed.
文摘Nowadays, because of the reduction in oil resources and the passage of the first and second life period of current reservoirs, using enhanced oil recovery(EOR)methods is of great importance. In recent years, due to the developments in technology and the advent of powerful computers, using simulation methods in enhanced oil recovery processes is on the rise. The computational fluid dynamics(CFD)method,as a branch of fluid mechanics,is a suitable method for studying and simulating EOR methods. In this study,a review was done on the application of CFD studies for simulating EOR methods. Also, potentials for future studies and the challenges researchers may face in this method were mentioned.Although using this method in enhanced oil recovery processes has recently started, different areas for more studies still exist. To optimize the usage of this method in future studies, the necessity of multiphase models and solution methods development,as well as considering all microscopic parameters such as interfacial tension and viscosity in investigating oil recovery factor is of great importance.

文摘An experimental study was performed to investigate the impact of low salinity water on wettability alteration in carbonate core samples from southern Iranian reservoirs by spontaneous imbibition. Finally, the highest ion attraction percentage was measured for sodium while there was no significant change in pH for all experiments.

文摘In enhanced oil recovery, different chemicalmethods utilization improves hydrocarbon recovery due to their fascinating abilities to alter some critical parameters in porous media, such as mobility control, the interaction between fluid to fluid, and fluid to rock surface. For decades the use of surfactant and polymer flooding has been used as tertiary recovery methods. In the current research, the inclusion of nanomaterials in enhanced oil recovery injection fluids solely or in the presence of other chemicals has got colossal interest. The emphasis of this review is on the applicability of nanofluids in the chemical enhanced oil recovery. The responsiblemechanisms are an increment in the viscosity of injection fluid, decrement in oil viscosity, reduction in interfacial and surface tension, and alteration of wettability in the rock formation. In this review, important parameters are presented, which may affect the desired behavior of nanoparticles, and the drawbacks of nanofluid and polymer flooding and the need for a combination of nanoparticles with the polymer are discussed.Due to the lack of literature in defining the mechanism of nanofluid in a reservoir, this paper covers majorly all the previous work done on the application of nanoparticles in chemical enhanced oil recovery at home conditions. Finally, the problems associatedwith the nano-enhanced oil recovery are outlined, and the research gap is identified, which must be addressed to implement polymeric nanofluids in chemical enhanced oil recovery.

文摘In recent years, production from tight oil reservoirs has increasingly supplemented production from conventional oil resources.Oil-wet formations account for a considerable proportion of tight oil reservoirs.Surfactant can change wettability and reduce interfacial tension, thus resulting in a better oil recovery. In this manuscript,a nonionic surfactant was introduced for tight oil-wet reservoirs. The oil recovery in the oil-wet sandstone due to spontaneous imbibition was 8.59%lower than that of the waterwet sandstone due to surfactant. The 0.1%surfactant solution corresponded to the highest imbibition recovery rate of 27.02%from the oil-wet sample. With the surfactant treatment, the treated core quickly changed from weakly oil-wet to weakly water-wet.The capillary force acted as the driving force and promoted imbibition. The optimal surfactant adsorption quantity in the oil-wet sandstone was observed in the sample at concentrations ranging from 0.1%to 0.3%,which also corresponded to the highest oil recovery.Analysis of the inverse Bond number NB-1 suggested that the driving force was gravity for brine imbibition in the oil-wet cores and that it was capillary force for surfactant imbibition in the oil-wet cores. When the surfactant concentration was lower than the critical micelle concentration, the surfactant concentration was negatively correlated with the inverse Bond number and positively correlated with the oil recovery rate. When the surfactant concentration was higher than the critical micelle concentration, the oil recovery increased with a smaller interfacial tension.Nuclear magnetic resonance suggested that the movable pore and pore throat size in the oil-wet sample decreased from 0.363 mm in the untreated rock to 0.326 mm with the surfactant treatment, which indicated that the surfactant improved the flow capacity of the oil.The findings of this study can help to better understand the adsorption impact of surfactants on the characteristics of the oil/water and solid/liquid interfaces. The imbibition mechanism in oil-wet tight sandstone reservoirs was further revealed. These systematic approaches help to select appropriate surfactants for better recovery in oil-wet tight sandstone reservoirs through imbibition.
文摘Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) methods apply injection of bacteria to depleted oil reservoirs to produce oil, which had remained unrecovered after the conventional methods of production. This study demonstrated that anaerobic bacteria used in biogas plants could be an attractive candidate for MEOR implementation due to their ability to withstand high temperature and salinity, and produce gas in large volumes.
