Parallel robots with SCARA(selective compliance assembly robot arm) motions are utilized widely in the field of high speed pick-and-place manipulation. Error modeling for these robots generally simplifies the parallelogram structures included by the robots as a link. As the established error model fails to reflect the error feature of the parallelogram structures, the effect of accuracy design and kinematic calibration based on the error model come to be undermined. An error modeling methodology is proposed to establish an error model of parallel robots with parallelogram structures. The error model can embody the geometric errors of all joints, including the joints of parallelogram structures. Thus it can contain more exhaustively the factors that reduce the accuracy of the robot. Based on the error model and some sensitivity indices defined in the sense of statistics, sensitivity analysis is carried out. Accordingly, some atlases are depicted to express each geometric error’s influence on the moving platform’s pose errors. From these atlases, the geometric errors that have greater impact on the accuracy of the moving platform are identified, and some sensitive areas where the pose errors of the moving platform are extremely sensitive to the geometric errors are also figured out. By taking into account the error factors which are generally neglected in all existing modeling methods, the proposed modeling method can thoroughly disclose the process of error transmission and enhance the efficacy of accuracy design and calibration. 展开更多

Spatial linear features are often represented as a series of line segments joined by measured endpoints in surveying and geographic information science. There are not only the measuring errors of the endpoints but also the modeling errors between the line segments and the actual geographical features. This paper presents a Brownian bridge error model for line segments combining both the modeling and measuring errors.First, the Brownian bridge is used to establish the position distribution of the actual geographic feature represented by the line segment.Second,an error propagation model with the constraints of the measuring error distribution of the endpoints is proposed.Third,a comprehensive error band of the line segment is constructed, wherein both the modeling and measuring errors are contained. The proposed error model can be used to evaluate line segments’overall accuracy and trustability influenced by modeling and measuring errors, and provides a comprehensive quality indicator for the geospatial data. 展开更多

Aiming at the problem of low machining accu- racy and uncontrollable thermal errors of NC machine tools, spindle thermal error measurement, modeling and compensation of a two turntable five-axis machine tool are researched. Measurement experiment of heat sources and thermal errors are carried out, and GRA(grey relational analysis) method is introduced into the selection of tem- perature variables used for thermal error modeling. In order to analyze the influence of different heat sources on spindle thermal errors, an ANN (artificial neural network) model is presented, and ABC(artificial bee colony) algorithm is introduced to train the link weights of ANN, a new ABC- NN(Artificial bee colony-based neural network) modeling method is proposed and used in the prediction of spindle thermal errors. In order to test the prediction performance of ABC-NN model, an experiment system is developed, the prediction results of LSR (least squares regression), ANN and ABC-NN are compared with the measurement results of spindle thermal errors. Experiment results show that the prediction accuracy of ABC-NN model is higher than LSR and ANN, and the residual error is smaller than 3 pm, the new modeling method is feasible. The proposed research provides instruction to compensate thermal errors and improve machining accuracy of NC machine tools. 展开更多

The machining accuracy of computer numerical control machine tools has always been a focus of the manufacturing industry.Among all errors, thermal error affects the machining accuracy considerably.Because of the significant impact of Industry 4.0 on machine tools, existing thermal error modeling methods have encountered unprecedented challenges in terms of model complexity and capability of dealing with a large number of time series data.A thermal error modeling method is proposed based on bidirectional long short-term memory(BiLSTM)deep learning, which has good learning ability and a strong capability to handle a large group of dynamic data.A four-layer model framework that includes BiLSTM,a feedforward neural network, and the max pooling is constructed. An elaborately designed algorithm is proposed for better and faster model training. The window length of the input sequence is selected based on the phase space reconstruction of the time series. The model prediction accuracy and model robustness were verified experimentally by three validation tests in which thermal errors predicted by the proposed model were compensated for real workpiece cutting. The average depth variation of the workpiece was reduced from approximately 50μm to less than 2μm after compensation. The reduction in maximum depth variation was more than 85%.The proposed model was proved to be feasible and effective for improving machining accuracy significantly. 展开更多

Kinematic calibration is a reliable way to improve the accuracy of parallel manipulators, while the error model dramatically afects the accuracy, reliability, and stability of identifcation results. In this paper, a comparison study on kinematic calibration for a 3-DOF parallel manipulator with three error models is presented to investigate the relative merits of diferent error modeling methods. The study takes into consideration the inverse-kinematic error model, which ignores all passive joint errors, the geometric-constraint error model, which is derived by special geometric constraints of the studied RPR-equivalent parallel manipulator, and the complete-minimal error model, which meets the complete, minimal, and continuous criteria. This comparison focuses on aspects such as modeling complexity, identifcation accuracy, the impact of noise uncertainty, and parameter identifability. To facilitate a more intuitive comparison, simulations are conducted to draw conclusions in certain aspects, including accuracy, the infuence of the S joint, identifcation with noises, and sensitivity indices. The simulations indicate that the complete-minimal error model exhibits the lowest residual values, and all error models demonstrate stability considering noises. Hereafter, an experiment is conducted on a prototype using a laser tracker, providing further insights into the diferences among the three error models. The results show that the residual errors of this machine tool are signifcantly improved according to the identifed parameters, and the complete-minimal error model can approach the measurements by nearly 90% compared to the inverse-kinematic error model. The fndings pertaining to the model process, complexity, and limitations are also instructive for other parallel manipulators. 展开更多

In the docking process of aeroengine rotor parts, docking accuracy that indicates the gaps between the end faces is strictly required.A key issue is improving docking accuracy using automated docking equipment. In this paper,a systematic study is carried out on the error modeling and compensation of a novel six-degrees-of-freedom(6-DOF)docking equipment for aeroengine rotors.First,a new model for indicating the main indexes of docking accuracy is proposed. Then, the error model of a specially designed 6-DOF docking equipment is established based on a modified Denavit Hartenberg method with five parameters.Subsequently, two error compensation methods are proposed.Based on the above models,a docking accuracy simulation algorithm is proposed using the Monte Carlo method. Finally, verification experiments are conducted. The results show that, for the maximum values and standard deviations of the gaps between the rotor end-faces in the actual and target positions and attitudes,i.e.,main indexes that represent docking accuracy, the deviation rates between the simulation and experimental results are less than20%.The modeling methods have referential significance. The decline rates of these values are 50–65%when using the two proposed compensation methods. The compensation methods significantly improve the docking accuracy. 展开更多

Error model is the basis for accuracy-related computations and analyses for parallel kinematic machines(PKMs).Traditional error modeling methods are usually based on differentiation of kinematic solutions, but the solving process is often complex and has limitations for certain specialized PKMs.A concise numerical error modeling method with the inverse kinematic solution as its only requirement is presented in this paper. To avoid complex Jacobian matrix computations, the difference matrix that can be quickly calculated by kinematic solutions was used to replace the differential matrix. The quasi-Newton method, which has high speed and high precision, was introduced to solve the numerical forward kinematic problem. To verify the efficiency of this numerical error modeling method, three applications in error transformation matrix(ETM) modeling, error analysis, and kinematic calibration were simulated on a 4RRR PKM.A comparison with the results obtained by the traditional method shows that the numerical method is accurate, convenient, and has lower requirements and wider applicability, especially for certain specialized and manufactured PKMs. 展开更多

To estimate the parameters of the mixed additive and multiplicative(MAM)random error model using the weighted least squares iterative algorithm that requires derivation of the complex weight array,we introduce a derivative-free cat swarm optimization for parameter estimation. We embed the Powell method, which uses conjugate direction acceleration and does not need to derive the objective function, into the original cat swarm optimization to accelerate its convergence speed and search accuracy. We use the ordinary least squares, weighted least squares, original cat swarm optimization, particle swarm algorithm and improved cat swarm optimization to estimate the parameters of the straight-line fitting MAM model with lower nonlinearity and the DEM MAM model with higher nonlinearity, respectively. The experimental results show that the improved cat swarm optimization has faster convergence speed, higher search accuracy, and better stability than the original cat swarm optimization and the particle swarm algorithm. At the same time, the improved cat swarm optimization can obtain results consistent with the weighted least squares method based on the objective function only while avoiding multiple complex weight array derivations. The method in this paper provides a new idea for theoretical research on parameter estimation of MAM error models. 展开更多

Joint clearances in antenna pointing mechanisms lead to uncertainty in function deviation. Current studies mainly focus on radial clearance of revolute joints, while axial clearance has rarely been taken into consideration. In fact, own?ing to errors from machining and assembly, thermal deformation and so forth, practically, axial clearance is inevitable in the joint. In this study, an error equivalent model(EEM) of revolute joints is proposed with considering both radial and axial clearances. Compared to the planar model of revolute joints only considering radial clearance, the journal motion inside the bearing is more abundant and matches the reality better in the EEM. The model is also extended for analyzing the error distribution of a spatial dual?axis("X–Y" type) antenna pointing mechanism of Spot?beam antennas which especially demand a high pointing accuracy. Three case studies are performed which illustrates the internal relation between radial clearance and axial clearance. It is found that when the axial clearance is big enough, the physical journal can freely realize both translational motion and rotational motion. While if the axial clearance is limited, the motion of the physical journal will be restricted. Analysis results indicate that the consideration of both radial and axial clearances in the revolute joint describes the journal motion inside the bearing more precise. To further validate the proposed model, a model of the EEM is designed and fabricated. Some suggestions on the design of revolute joints are also provided. 展开更多

This paper proposes an automatic algorithm to determine the properties of stochastic processes and their parameters for inertial error. The proposed approach is based on a recently developed method called the generalized method of wavelet moments (GMWM), whose estimator was proven to be consistent and asymptotically normally distributed. This algorithm is suitable mainly (but not only) for the combination of several stochastic processes, where the model identification and parameter estimation are quite difficult for the traditional methods, such as the Allan variance and the power spectral density analysis. This algorithm further explores the complete stochastic error models and the candidate model ranking criterion to realize automatic model identification and determination. The best model is selected by making the trade-off between the model accuracy and the model complexity. The validation of this approach is verified by practical examples of model selection for MEMS-IMUs (micro-electro-mechanical system inertial measurement units) in varying dynamic conditions. 展开更多

Effects of performing an R-factor analysis of observed variables based on population models comprising R- and Q-factors were investigated. Although R-factor analysis of data based on a population model comprising R- and Q-factors is possible, this may lead to model error. Accordingly, loading estimates resulting from R-factor analysis of sample data drawn from a population based on a combination of R- and Q-factors will be biased. It was shown in a simulation study that a large amount of Q-factor variance induces an increase in the variation of R-factor loading estimates beyond the chance level. Tests of the multivariate kurtosis of observed variables are proposed as an indicator of possible Q-factor variance in observed variables as a prerequisite for R-factor analysis. 展开更多

Firstly, the new combined error model of cumulative geoid height influenced by four error sources, including the inter-satellite range-rate of an interferometric laser (K-band) ranging system, the orbital position and velocity of a global positioning system (GPS) receiver and non-conservative force of an accelerometer, is established from the perspectives of the power spectrum principle in physics using the semi-analytical approach. Secondly, the accuracy of the global gravitational field is accurately and rapidly estimated based on the combined error model; the cumulative geoid height error is 1.985× 10^-1 m at degree 120 based on GRACE Level 1B measured observation errors of the year 2007 published by the US Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the cumulative geoid height error is 5.825 × 10^-2 m at degree 360 using GRACE Follow-On orbital altitude 250 km and inter-satellite range 50 km. Model error is one of the key factors restricting the accuracy of numerical weather prediction (NWP). Considering the continuous evolution of the atmosphere, the observed data (ignoring the measurement error) can be viewed as a series of solutions of an accurate model governing the actual atmosphere. Model error is represented as an unknown term in the accurate model, thus NWP can be considered as an inverse problem to uncover the unknown error term. The inverse problem models can absorb long periods of observed data to generate model error correction procedures. They thus resolve the deficiency and faultiness of the NWP schemes employing only the initial-time data. In this study we construct two inverse problem models to estimate and extrapolate the time-varying and spatial-varying model errors in both the historical and forecast periods by using recent observations and analogue phenomena of the atmosphere. Numerical experiment on Burgers' equation has illustrated the substantial forecast improvement using inverse problem algorithms. The proposed inverse problem methods of suppressing NWP errors will be useful in future high accuracy applications of NWP. 展开更多

The initial value error and the imperfect numerical model are usually considered as error sources of numerical weather prediction (NWP). By using past multi-time observations and model output, this study proposes a method to estimate imperfect numerical model error. This method can be inversely estimated through expressing the model error as a Lagrange interpolation polynomial, while the coefficients of polyno- mial are determined by past model performance. However, for practical application in the full NWP model, it is necessary to determine the following criteria: (1) the length of past data sufficient for estimation of the model errors, (2) a proper method of estimating the term "model integration with the exact solution" when solving the inverse problem, and (3) the extent to which this scheme is sensitive to the observational errors. In this study, such issues are resolved using a simple linear model, and an advection diffusion model is applied to discuss the sensitivity of the method to an artificial error source. The results indicate that the forecast errors can be largely reduced using the proposed method if the proper length of past data is chosen. To address the three problems, it is determined that (1) a few data limited by the order of the corrector can be used, (2) trapezoidal approximation can be employed to estimate the "term" in this study; however, a more accurate method should be explored for an operational NWP model, and (3) the correction is sensitive to observational error. 展开更多
