The present study aims to focus on the relationship between gender and everyday life and reflect on the meanings of being a woman in the 1950s and the 1960s over Sally Potter’s film Ginger and Rosa(2012a).The 1950s and the 1960s are marked with significant changes and transformations in terms of the social statuses and everyday lives of women in many countries all around the world.Women began to question their gendered roles and performances, resist“doing gender”and speak out“the problem that has no name”in these years, which would then evolve into the second-wave feminist movement—a significant historical period in women’s history. Therefore,an analysis of this specific period is considered significant to understand the relationship between gender and everyday life. Thus, the present study first addresses the relationship between gender and everyday life in general terms, discussing the social construction of gender and how we are taught to do gender through socialization. Then,it examines women’s practices, performances, relationships, conflicts, and resistances in their everyday lives throughout the 1950s and the 1960s over the film Ginger and Rosa.Considering the historical, social, and political developments at the time, this study tries to explore significant issues within feminist studies such as the relationship between mothers and daughters, and female friendship/sisterhood through the characters in the film, and comprehend what it meant to be a young girl,a woman,a wife, and a mother in both private and public spheres in these years based upon the director’s own experiences and memories. 展开更多

This paper reports an investigation on everyday life information seeking behavior of urban low-income group in the Haizhu District of Guangzhou City. Empirical data were collected via in-depth interviews with low-income urban residents and were analyzed using qualitative methods. This paper discusses the research findings based on the more noticeable results of information seeking behavior among these people. Our approach touches on a focused study of such issues as what the role of information seeking in their everyday life is, what information they care about, which information channels they prefer to use, which factors influence their information seeking behavior, how difficult it is to seek the information they need, and how they use public libraries. Based on our research findings, we propose that public libraries should provide customized information services for urban low-income residents according to the unique characteristics of their information seeking behavior in everyday life. 展开更多

As a revolutionary leader, Mao Zedong had a new vision of China as a reformed revolutionary society. Challenging this radical social vision in The Ninth Widow (Di jiu ge guafu, 2006) and One Woman's Epic (Yige nuren de shishi, 2007), the contemporary Chinese writer Yan Geling describes how the characters retain their personal mentalities and habits in everyday life as they ignore, outmaneuver or even defy the political demands of revolutionary China. Focused on Yan's depiction of everyday life, the present paper offers a close reading and analysis of the two novels in relation to the theories of Pierre Bourdieu, Alf Ludtke and Michel de Certeau. It pays special attention to Yan's depiction of everyday life as a site where the characters in the novels bring their human agency into play as they satisfy their human needs and maintain their individual characteristics. Ultimately, it shows how Yan's depiction of everyday life questions the reach and efficacy of dominant ideology in revolutionary China. 展开更多

Background:Parents of children with complex right ventricular outflow tract(RVOT)anomalies are confronted with their child’s need for heart surgery early in life and repeated reoperations later on.Preoperative assessment needs to be performed whenever an indication for reoperation is suspected. The aim was to illuminate the experiences of parents of children diagnosed with RVOT anomalies,in particular, how they experience their child’s heart disease and everyday life during the assessment and after the decision on whether to perform a reoperation.Method:Individual interviews(n=27)were conducted with nine parents on three occasions between 2014 and 2016 and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results:The analysis resulted in the following five main coexisting themes:The heart surgery keeps my child alive illuminates parents’experiences during and after the assessment and emphasizes that heart surgery, although dreaded,is central for their child’s survival;Everyday struggles illuminates the different struggles parents had to face to ensure that their child would be in the best possible condition;the remaining three themes,Unconditional love,Trust in life, and Togetherness, illuminate the ways in which the parents gained inner strength and confidence in their everyday lives. Conclusion:Although the parents were grateful for the assessment and had learned to navigate among the fears it aroused, they experienced several distressing situations during the assessment process that should be addressed.By inviting both the parents and their child to participate in the child’s care, individualized support can take into account the needs of both parents and child. 展开更多

This study explores the role of Bedouins in preserving Palestinian land through their own means of community resilience through the concept of“Art of being”and its entailed“Arts of presence and persistence”.This is examined through the correlation between Bedouin lifestyle and the spatial distribution of structures within“Al-Kurshan”Bedouin clan in Area C in the West Bank.Based on a mixed qualitative and spatial methodologies, information was gathered through semi-structured interviews with Al-Kurshan Bedouins and employees of organizations supporting Bedouins,on-site observation, and analyses of maps and photos,in addition to drawings and illustrations. The spatial distribution of Bedouin built structures is analyzed in relation to landscape and climate, social aspects within the families, and available service and sectorial infrastructures. These analyses give insight on how Bedouins struggle against adopting other lifestyles. The study shows that the Bedouins are slowly forced to negotiate their semi-nomadic lifestyle, but resist giving up their right to exist against the threat of forced displacement. They maintain their“Art of being”which partly represents their own way of safeguarding Palestinian lands from confiscation. The study contributes to the wider discussion of spatial dynamics of Bedouins and their community resilience within the Palestinian geopolitical context. 展开更多
