BACKGROUND The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic and the universal implementation of control measures are fundamentally affecting every aspect of our society and daily lives.AIM To evaluate the preval...BACKGROUND The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic and the universal implementation of control measures are fundamentally affecting every aspect of our society and daily lives.AIM To evaluate the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and their associated factors as well as the effects and attitudes towards online education in Chinese high school students.METHODS A total of 883 students were included.The first,second and third-year students of a high school in Lanzhou,Gansu province of China were invited to participate in this study.They were requested to involve their parents to complete the survey together.A detailed questionnaire of 65 questions was designed and divided into five sections.The survey was anonymously conducted via WeChat,a Chinese multipurpose messaging,social media and mobile payment app.RESULTS Overall,32.94%of students experienced post-traumatic stress disorder due to the COVID-19 epidemic.The majority of students(60.82%)felt that online education was not(10.76%)or less effective(50.06%)in terms of gaining knowledge and improving practical and communications skills.Correlation analysis revealed that the class level,residential background and whether living with parents were significantly linked with the effectiveness and satisfaction of the online education system.Of the final year students,74.2%said that the COVID-19 outbreak has negatively affected their preparation for the college entrance exam,and 68%of students felt that this outbreak increased psychological pressure for their college entrance examination preparation.In case of having COVID-19 symptoms during the exam,50.7%,13.3%,and 10.2%would notify the proctor,teacher and parents,respectively.CONCLUSION We found a high prevalence rate of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in high school students.Thus,our results call for urgent attention from both government and schools to implement effective interventions to cope with the psychological effects and the disturbance of education by COVID-19 on children.展开更多

Purpose-English language skills have great influence on labors’earnings from the global perspective.To reveal the economic returns to English language ability in Chinese labor market,we investigate how the global Eng...Purpose-English language skills have great influence on labors’earnings from the global perspective.To reveal the economic returns to English language ability in Chinese labor market,we investigate how the global English test certificate affects college graduates’wage.Design/Approach/Methods-We adopt the ordinary least squares(OLS)and propensity score matching(PSM)methods,using data from Chinese Education Panel Survey(CEPS).Findings-The results indicate that with English test scores controlled,possessing global English test certificates have an additional positive effect on wage premiums whereas domestic English test certificates do not.Therefore for college graduates in China,the act of chasing certificates represents proactivity and is rewarded at the initial employment stage.Originality/Value-Our findings imply that global English test has great comprehensive value in labor market:the certificate is not only the important signal to students’English language,but the crucial indicator to one’s productivity personality which is rewarded at the initial employment stage.展开更多

MethodsA total of 5 809 students (2 904 boys and 2 905 girls) from 41 schools (29 middle schools and 12 high schools) who were going to take National College Entrance Examination of China (NCEE) and High School Entrance Examination of Shanghai (HSEE) in 2012 in Minhang District were included in this investigation. The eyesight data of the students, including myopia rates, the disturbing of myopia degree, the differences of myopia rate between different schools, the relationship between the myopia rate and sex, and the relationship between myopia rate and right or left eye, were analyzed. ResultsMyopia was found in 80.3% of the total students. The rate of myopia in high school was 84.0% (90.2% in key high school and 85.1% in general high school with significant difference between them). The rate of myopia in middle school was 78.2% (78.5% in key middle school and 77.9% in general high school without significant difference between them). The myopia rate of high school was higher than that of middle school (P<0.001). In high school, the myopia rate of girls (86.8%) was higher than that of boys (80.8%) (P<0.001). Among all students, the right eyesight (4.361) was lower than the left (4.389) (P<0.001). ConclusionThere is a poor situation in the eyesight of middle school students. The government should take effective measures to publicize the importance of the eyesight health. The education departments and the hospitals must establish the termly examination to decrease the occurrence rate of myopia.展开更多
