Our research topic is about the economic situation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) oil exporters after the global crisis in 2008. The authors tried to find the answers to the questions such as "How bad or good is the situation there?" and "what is the expectation about the future of the region?" Like other countries around the world, the MENA oil exporters, comprised of Algeria, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Yemen were adversely affected by the global crisis. The MENA oil exporters are recently recovering from their recession in 2009 when the global crisis was felt intensively there. GDP in the region has grown by 3.5 percent in 2010 after a low growth of 0.7 percent in 2009. The average real GDP growth excluding Libya is projected to reach 4.9 percent in 2011. Two developments mark the outlook: the unrest in the region and the surge in global fuel and food prices. For most oil exporters, the expected increase in oil prices and production volumes will lead to higher growth in 2011 and stronger fiscal and external balances, notwithstanding recent increases in government spending. The oil exporters' combined external current account surplus is estimated to increase. The effects of the political events in Tunisia and Egypt have spread in varying degrees to the MENA oil exporters in the region, and many of these countries are responding with public spending and job-creation measures to alleviate social tensions. The social unrest also highlights the need to pursue fundamental economic reforms--social policy, fiscal management, governance, business environment, labor markets, and financial sector access to facilitate more inclusive economic growth. While the MENA countries are generally divided into two sub-regions such as "oil exporters" and "oil importers" in the economic literature, the authors will deal with only the MENA oil exporters in this work. The negative effects of the global crisis in these countries on growth, inflation, current account balance, budget balance, and finally financial sector will be reviewed in this work and the expectations and the developments which occurred after the crisis in these countries will be dealt with especially in the context of the IMF reports. 展开更多

The effects of price leadership strategies and branding strategies on the export performance of indigenous Chinese exporters with a focus on developing country markets and developed country markets are examined based on the principles of strategy-environment co-alignment and marketing segmentation theory. Findings suggest that when focusing on developing country markets, the use of a branding strategy is more likely to enhance export performance. When focusing on developed country markets, neither the use of a price leadership strategy nor the use of a branding strategy enhances export performance. Finally, theoretical and managerial implications of the findings are discussed. 展开更多

This paper evaluates the causal effect of air pollution on the share of domestic value-added in exports for Chinese exporters.Precipitation is employed as an instrument for air pollution to alleviate the endogeneity. Our baseline instrument variable estimation identifies a significant and negative effect of air pollution on the share of domestic value added in exports.Specifically, each 1 mg/m^(3) increase in yearly PM_(2.5) exposure is associated with 3.1447 units decrease of the domestic value-added rate of firms’exports. This result holds when wind speed, air flow index and thermal inversions are used as alternative instruments.Further,it is shown that air pollution is detrimental to the health of employees, and also has negative effect on firms’productivity as well as firms’innovation capacity. All of these may have a negative effect on domestic production and therefore reduce the share of value added done domestically.Lastly, greater effect is found for the central region, the east of Hu Huanyong line, cities of low altitude and high pressure, and also for foreign-invested firms. This paper provides empirical evidence that air pollution may affect the organization of global production,i.e.,the share of domestic value added in Chinese exports, and it certainly contributes to more comprehensive understanding of the effect of air pollution. 展开更多

Using matched firm-level trade and production data over the period 200~2006, we study the produet-destination portfolio and dynamics of Chinese industrial exporters and make a thorough comparison among four types of frms and between two kinds of trade modes. We find that ownership structure and trading modes do matter to the destination and product mix choices of Chinese industrial exporters. In particular, foreign frms' exports and processing trade tend to be more destination-specific and products are more specialized. Therefore, foreign firms are more likely to maintain a partieular link within a specific' global supply chain. 展开更多

Using Chinese microdata from 2000 to 2013,we document how demand shocks in export markets lead multi-product exporters to adjust markups across products. We find that,in response to positive demand shocks,quality-based competitive multi-product firms increase product markups significantly, particularly for core products, whereas cost-based competitive multi-product firms respond by reducing product markups. The reason for this is that positive foreign demand affects markups through two opposite channels:pro-innovative effects and pro-competitive ejfects.Pro-innovative effects are predominant among quality-based competitive multi-product firms, and these firms respond to positive foreign demand shocks by increasing product quality, prices, and markups.Pro-competitive ejfects are predominant among cost-based competitive multi-product firms, and these firms respond to positive foreign demand shocks by lowering product cost, prices, and markups. We demonstrate the presence of these mechanisms empirically. The results imply that firms with different competition strategies should adopt different measures in response to foreign demand shocks. 展开更多

The construction of a food certification system plays a vital role in upgrading export quality, which previous studies have largely overlooked. We match China's industry-level data of Green Food Certification with its HS6-digit export data of agri-food products to quantify the impact of Green Food Certification on export quality. We identify the significant and positive effect of Green Food Certification on export quality. The 2SLS estimation based on instrumental variables and a range of robustness checks confirm the validity and robustness of the benchmark conclusions. Further analysis discloses that Green Food Certification improves export quality by raising agricultural production efficiency and brand premiums. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the effect of Green Food Certification varies across regions, notably improving the quality of agri-food products exported to developed regions and regions with high levels of import supervision. Furthermore, among various product types, Green Food Certification significantly improves the export quality of primary products and products vulnerable to non-tariff measures. The above findings could guide the future development of agri-food quality certification systems, potentially leading to a transformation and promotion of the agri-food trade. 展开更多

With the rapid growth of the global digital economy, cross-border e-commerce, as an emerging form of trade, has gradually become a powerful engine to promote the development of global trade. BRICS is an important force in the global economy, and the progress of the BRICS countries' trade facilitation level has an important impact on the global trade environment. This paper conducts an in-depth study of the dynamic changes in BRICS trade facilitation from 2013 to 2022, and uses an extended gravity model to analyze the specific impact of this change on China's exports using cross-border e-commerce. The results show that although the BRICS countries have made some progress in trade facilitation, the overall level still needs to be improved, and there are obvious differences among member countries. However, the improvement of trade facilitation among BRICS countries has undoubtedly brought significant positive effects to China's exports using cross-border e-commerce. 展开更多

In the Turkish Economy, there were radical changes in the structure of the economy with the policies of opening up to the outside world and transition to a free market economy in the 1980s,and the last step of this opening up and liberalization process was realized with the decision number 32 in 1989.We can say that with the liberalization of capital movements in the 1990s,economic growth and development were tried to be achieved through hot money inflows rather than direct foreign investments. This trend made the economy more open to crises, and for the first time,a crisis occurred in the form of the 1994 economic crisis, which was understood to be caused by hot money. The same economic structure experienced a financial and economic crisis caused by hot money again in November 2000 and February 2001.While the crisis was overcome with the stand-by agreement made with the IMF(International Monetary Fund)and the announced Transition to a Strong Economy program, the economy started to grow rapidly with the ease of using foreign resources, and political stability seems to have enabled this economic growth process to continue uninterruptedly except 2009.There was also a decrease in inflation rates. The same economic structure continued in the period between 2010 and 2020,and the financing need of economic growth was met by outsourcing. However, this process was different from the previous decade and there was no economic and financial crisis other than the sudden increase in exchange rates in 2018.We can say that the sudden exchange rate increase in 2018 was perceived as a harbinger of possible exchange rate shocks in the following years. 展开更多

Background:Agarwood, primarily derived from the Aquilaria and Gyrinops genera, holds significant economic importance. However, there is a lack of comprehensive investigations providing guidance to importing nations regarding cultivation quantities and expected yields of Agarwood from distinct species. This study aims to address this gap by exploring the historical context and trade evolution of Agarwood, highlighting its global importance, and the challenges associated with securing accurate species information.Method:On-site visits to Agarwood cultivation sites were conducted to gain a nuanced understanding of Aquilaria species and their cultivation requirements.Additionally,a thorough analysis of global export and import data for Agarwood products over the last decade was undertaken. Results:China Mainland emerged as the leading exporter of Agarwood, averaging an annual export value of USD 1 million.India’s substantial exports challenge the prevailing notion of limited Agarwood production within its borders.Hong Kong and Singapore are pivotal distribution hubs, while Hong Kong and Taipei feature prominently as import destinations. Our analysis uncovers anomalies in the representation of Agarwood producers from 2001 to 2008,suggesting potential misclassification of Aquilaria Agarwood as Gyrinops in global export information. These findings underscore the urgency of investigating classification and reporting practices in the Agarwood trade.Furthermore,A.filaria emerges as a notable source, while A.malaccensis is decline in prominence. Conclusion:This study provides crucial insights for policymakers, stakeholders, and industry players seeking to make informed decisions in the Agarwood trade landscape. The results highlight the need for accurate species identification, classification, and reporting practices to ensure sustainable cultivation and trade of Agarwood. 展开更多

Technical barriers to trade,as a non-tariff barrier, have an increasing impact on the international market. As a major province in toy exports,Zhejiang Province’s toy export trade is therefore greatly hindered. This article aims to explore the impact of technical trade barriers on toy exports in Zhejiang Province and analyze countermeasures.Through literature review and some empirical analysis,it is found that technical trade barriers have greatly promoted the development of Zhejiang’s toy industry;however, they have also subjected it to impacts and pressures such as cost and technology. In response to the impact of technical trade barriers on toy exports, this article proposes corresponding countermeasures to avoid such barriers:firstly, establish a quality management system that complies with export product regulations to ensure that the products produced can meet international requirements and standards;secondly, reduce dependence on overseas markets;then enhance one’s own technology, and strengthen product innovation,in order to enhance the international competitiveness of the product and oneself;in addition,we should also explore diversified markets and expand the sales channels and coverage of our products. 展开更多

This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of the export dynamics within the Ukrainian timber industry, emphasizing its pivotal role in the national economy. The study begins by outlining the research objectives, context, and innovative methodologies, setting the stage for a deep dive into the theoretical underpinnings of sustainable and competitive trade. It explores Ukraine’s rich forest biodiversity across varied vegetation zones and its geopolitical significance. Detailed evaluations of forest resource management, policy frameworks, and institutional support form the core of the analysis. Challenges such as imbalanced export structures and legal inconsistencies are critically examined. The research employs trade gravity models and competitive indicators like the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Market Share (MS) to assess factors influencing exports and to forecast potential growth areas. The findings inform strategic recommendations aimed at enhancing export capacity through market diversification, brand development, and legal stability. The conclusion highlights the need for strategic interventions to harness Ukraine’s timber resources sustainably, balancing economic gains with environmental stewardship. 展开更多
