Four techniques, Soxhlet extraction (SOX), ultrasonic extraction (USE), fluidized-bed extraction (FBE) and acce-lerated solvent extraction (ASE) with different solvents (methanol, hexane/acetone and acetonitrile) were used for theextraction of DDT analogues in sediments. Results revealed that the four extraction techniques had high recoveries (>86.0%) with low standard deviations (< 12.0%) for most of DDT analogues, meaning that they could all successfully extractDDT analogues in sediments. Accelerated solvent extraction using methanol and hexane/acetone (1:1), fluidized-bedextraction using hexane/acetone (1:1) and the ultrasonic extraction using hexane/acetone (1:1) were comparable or betterthan Soxhlet extraction using hexane/acetone (1:1). Considering solvent- and time-consumption, level of automation, and environmental risk, accelerated solvent extraction with hexane/acetone (1:1) was better than the other extractiontechniques. 展开更多

Carbazole is an irreplaceable basic organic chemical raw material and intermediate in industry. The separation of carbazole from anthracene oil by environmental benign solvents is important but still a challenge in chemical engineering.Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a sustainable green separation solvent have been proposed for the separation of carbazole from model anthracene oil.In this research, three quaternary ammonium-based DESs were prepared using ethylene glycol (EG) as hydrogen bond donor and tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBAC),tetrabutylammonium bromide or choline chloride as hydrogen bond acceptors. To explore their extraction performance of carbazole, the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) model was used to predict the activity coefficient at infinite dilution (γ^(∞)) of carbazole in DESs,and the result indicated TBAC:EG (1:2) had the stronger extraction ability for carbazole due to the higher capacity at infinite dilution (C^(∞)) value. Then, the separation performance of these three DESs was evaluated by experiments, and the experimental results were in good agreement with the COSMO-RS prediction results. The TBAC:EG (1:2) was determined as the most promising solvent.Additionally, the extraction conditions of TBAC:EG (1:2) were optimized, and the extraction efficiency, distribution coefficient and selectivity of carbazole could reach up to 85.74%,30.18 and 66.10%,respectively.Moreover,the TBAC:EG (1:2) could be recycled by using environmentally friendly water as antisolvent. In addition, the separation performance of TBAC:EG (1:2) was also evaluated by real crude anthracene, the carbazole was obtained with purity and yield of 85.32%,60.27%,respectively.Lastly,the extraction mechanism was elucidated byσ-profiles and interaction energy analysis.Theoretical calculation results showed that the main driving force for the extraction process was the hydrogen bonding ((N–H...Cl) and van der Waals interactions (C–H...O and C–H...π),which corresponding to the blue and green isosurfaces in IGMH analysis. This work presented a novel method for separating carbazole from crude anthracene oil,and will provide an important reference for the separation of other high value-added products from coal tar. 展开更多

Chemical solvents instead of pure water being as hydraulic fracturing fluid could effectively increase permeability and improve clean methane extraction efficiency.However,pore-fracture variation features of lean coal synergistically affected by solvents have not been fully understood.Ultrasonic testing, nuclear magnetic resonance analysis, liquid phase mass spectrometry was adopted to comprehensively analyze pore-fracture change characteristics of lean coal treated by combined solvent(NMP and CS_(2)).Meanwhile,quantitative characterization of above changing properties was conducted using geometric fractal theory.Relationship model between permeability, fractal dimension and porosity were established. Results indicate that the end face fractures of coal are well developed after CS2and combined solvent treatments,of which, end face box-counting fractal dimensions range from 1.1227 to 1.4767.Maximum decreases in ultrasonic longitudinal wave velocity of coal affected by NMP,CS_(2)and combined solvent are 2.700%,20.521%,22.454%,respectively.Solvent treatments could lead to increasing amount of both mesopores and macropores.Decrease ratio of fractal dimension Dsis 0.259%–2.159%,while permeability increases ratio of NMR ranges from 0.1904 to 6.4486.Meanwhile,combined solvent could dissolve coal polar and non-polar small molecules and expand flow space. Results could provide reference for solvent selection and parameter optimization of permeability-enhancement technology. 展开更多

Corn as one of the world's major food crops, its by-product corn cob is also rich in resources. However, the unreasonable utilization of corn cob often causes the environmental pollution, waste of resources and other problems. As one of the most abundant polymers in nature, xylan is widely used in food, medicine, materials and other fields.Corn cob is rich in xylan, which is an ideal raw material for extracting xylan. However, the intractable lignin is covalently linked to xylan, which increases the difficulty of xylan extraction. It has been reported that the deep eutectic solvent(DES)could preferentially dissolve lignin in biomass, thereby dissolving the xylan. Then, the xylan in the extract was separated by ethanol precipitation method. The xylan precipitate was obtained after centrifugation, while the supernatant was retained. The components of the supernatant after ethanol precipitation were separated by the rotary evaporator. The ethanol, water and DES were collected for the subsequent extraction of corn cob xylan. In this study,a novel way was provided for the green production of corn cob xylan. The DES was used to extract xylan from corn cob which was used as the raw material. The effects of solid-liquid ratio, reaction time, reaction temperature and water content of DES on the extraction rate of corn cob xylan were investigated by the single factor test.Furthermore, the orthogonal test was designed to optimize the xylan extraction process. The structure of corn cob xylan was analyzed and verified. The results showed that the optimum extraction conditions of corn cob xylan were as follows:the ratio of corn cob to DES was 1:15(g:mL),the extraction time was 3 h,the extraction temperature was 60℃,and the water content of DES was 70%.Under these conditions, the extraction rate of xylan was 16.46%.The extracted corn cob xylan was distinctive triple helix of polysaccharide, which was similar to the structure of commercially available xylan.Xylan was effectively and workably extracted from corn cob by the DES method. This study provided a new approach for high value conversion of corn cob and the clean production of xylan. 展开更多

Using experimental data from a number of pulsed disc and doughnut solvent extraction columns, a unified correla- tion for the prediction of dispersed phase holdup that considers the effects of mass transfer is presented. Pulsed disc and doughnut solvent extraction columns (PDDC) have been used for a range of important applications such as ura- nium extraction and nuclear fuel recycling. Although the dispersed phase holdup in a PDDC has been presented by some researchers, there is still the need to develop a robust correlation that can predict the experimental dispersed phase holdup over a range of operating conditions including the effects of mass transfer direction. In this study, dis- persed phase holdup data from different literature sources for a PDDC were used to refit constants for the correlation presented by Kumar and Hartland lind. Eng. Chem. Res.,27 (1988),131-138] which did not consider the effect of col- umn geometry. In order to incorporate the characteristic length of the PDDC (i.e. the plate spacing), the unified cor- relation for holdup proposed by Kumar and Hartland based on data from eight different types of columns [Ind. Eng. Chem. Res.,34 (1995) 3925-3940] was refitted to the PDDC data. New constants have been presented for each hold- up correlation for a PDDC based on regression analysis using published holdup data from PDDCs that cover a range of onerating conditions and nhwical nronerties and consider the direction of mass transfer. 展开更多

The extraction experiments of chromium(W) from aqueous waste solution by predispersed solvent extraction (PDSE) process with extractant (HEHPEHE) and its mixture, including acidic extractant (D2EHPA), alkaline extractant (TOA) and neutral extractant (TBP) were carried out respectively. It is found that the extractant HEHPEHE exhibited high extraction selectivity to chromium(III) from aqueous waste solution. The colloidal liquid aphrons (CLAs) were successfully generated using kerosene as a solvent, HEHPEHE as an extractant, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphate (SDBS) as a surfactant in aqueous phase and polyoxyethylene sorbitol anhydride monolaurate (Tween-20) in oil phase. To study the extraction efficiency and advantages of the PDSE process in the removal of chromium(III), the effects of major factors, such as initial chromium(III) concentration, volume of colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs), HEHPEHE volume fraction, phase ratio (solvent phase to water phase), mass fraction of dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (HTAB), mass fraction of SDBS, mass fraction of Tween-20 and initial pH of aqueous waste solution were also investigated and the appropriate process conditions were obtained. Under the appropriate conditions, the extraction efficiency of chromium(III) above 99.9 % can be achieved and the treated aqueous waste solution can be discharged directly without polluting the environment. 展开更多

Lubricating oils are usually produced by solvent extraction to separate aromatics in order to achieve the desired specifications and better quality products.Among the different properties of lubricating oils, density and refractive index are some of the most important properties which can both be used for petroleum fluid characterization.Predictions of density and refractive index for naphthenic oils during solvent extraction by DMSO obtained by the pseudo-component approach and the quadratic correlation were both examined. The pseudo-component approach is a method to predict density and refractive index from composition while the latter merely relates density to refractive index. Results indicated that the predictions yielded by the pseudo-component method were in good agreement with experimental data for naphthenic oils. And the use of a function of refractive index(FRI_(20))as a pseudo-component property remarkably improved n_(20)predictions for the naphthenic mixtures. However, the density and refractive index predictions obtained by the quadratic correlation exhibited significantly higher de-viations for naphthenic oils than those for paraffinic oils. Thus a new modified correlation of the same functional form was proposed for naphthenic oils. The modification significantly improved predictions for naphthenic oils, which presented similar accuracy as the pseudo-component approach. And the previous correlation was still used for paraffinic oils.Additionally, effect of temperature on density and refractive index of naphthenic oils was examined. Results showed that the modified quadratic correlation was accurate for describing the relationship between density and refractive index of naphthenic oils at 20-90℃.The temperature dependence of density and refractive index for the raffinates and the extracts could be accurately described by the thermal coefficients for saturates and aromatics, respectively.Regarding the refractive index variation of the extracts with temperature, the empirical equation was proved to be a better option compared with the method using the thermal coefficient for aromatics. 展开更多

Polysaccharides are the important biologically active components found in the peel of Dioscorea opposita Thunb.(DTTP).The influences of 4 extraction methods, namely hot water extraction(W),acidic extraction(HA),hot-compressed water extraction(HCW)and enzyme-assisted extraction(EAE),on the yields, physicochemical properties, hypoglycemic and antioxidant activities of polysaccharides from DTTP were studied and compared.Among these DTTP polysaccharides,DTTP-HA was outstanding in several respects.DTTP-HA was the most water soluble;it had the highest total carbohydrate content(85.08%),the highest uronic acid(13.20%)and the highest thermal stability.DTTP-HA and DTTP-W possessed a triple-helix structure. These 4 kinds of polysaccharides have the same types of monosaccharides, but in different molar percentages.Extraction method had a significant impact on the microstructures of the extracted polysaccharides.DTT-HA exhibited irregular structure with many holes.Among the 4 extracted methods, the DTTP-HA and DTTP-W initially exhibited higher hypoglycemic and antioxidant activities. The better bioactivities of DTTP-HA may be related to the above factors. The findings indicated that acid extraction is an effective method to extract polysaccharides with high biological activities from DTTP. 展开更多

Sinomenine is the main bio-active ingredient of Sinomenii Caulis and usually produced by solventextraction techniques. However, the extraction of sinomenine suffers from the lack of highly efficient and environmentally-benign solvents. In this work, deep eutectic solvents(DESs) based on fragrances were synthesized, hydrogen-bond donors(HBDs) and hydrogen-bond acceptors(HBAs) components of DESs were identified and their extraction ability for sinomenine was evaluated and the extraction conditions were optimized by single-factor and orthogonal design experiments. It was found that the hydrogen-bonding interaction between sinomenine and DESs was the main extraction driving force and there was no explicit relationship between the extraction ability and the hydrophobicity of the DESs. The DESs could be recycled and sinomenine could be recovered quantitatively via backextraction. High-purity sinomenine((95.0 ± 2.3)%) could be produced. These findings suggest that DESs are highly-effective solvents for the isolation of sinomenine and exhibit great potential for the extraction of other bio-active compounds. 展开更多

Levulinic acid(LA)is one of the top-12 most promising biomass-based platform chemicals, which has a wide range of applications in a variety of fields. However, separation and purification of LA from aqueous solution or actual hydrolysate continues to be a challenge.Among various downstream separation technologies,liquid-liquid extraction is a low-cost,effective,and simple process to separate LA.The key breakthrough lies in the development of extractants with high extraction efficiency, good hydrophobicity, and low cost.In this work, three hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents(DESs)based on tri-n-octylamine(TOA)as hydrogen bond acceptor(HBA)and alcohols(butanol,2-octanol,and menthol)as hydrogen bond donors(HBDs)were developed to extract LA from aqueous solution. The molar ratios of HBD and HBA,extraction temperature, contact time, solution pH,and initial LA concentration,DES/water volume ratios were systematically investigated.Compared with 2-octanol-TOA and menthol-TOA DES,the butanol-TOA DES exhibited the superior extraction performance for LA,with a maximum extraction efficiency of 95.79±1.4%.Moreover,the solution pH had a great impact on the LA extraction efficiency of butanol-TOA(molar ratio=3:1).It is worth noting that the extraction equilibrium time was less than 0.5 h.More importantly, the butanol-TOA(3:1)DES possesses good extraction abilities for low, medium, and high concentrations of LA. 展开更多

Solvent extraction is the process of separating aromatics from vacuum distillates for the production oflubricating base oils. In this study, the authors use dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) instead of furfural as solvent, in light of itshigher selectivity, to obtain extracts with a high aromatic content for naphthenic lubricating base oils. We systematicallyinvestigated effects of the solvent-to-oil (S/O) ratio and extraction temperature on the yield of the extract, efficiency ofaromatic removal, and composition of the extracts and raffinates. The results showed that the aromatic content of extractsfor naphthenic oils could reach a high value of about 80%. The solvent maintained a high selectivity for aromatics fornaphthenic oils even under a high S/O ratio and a high extraction temperature. Moreover, the efficiency of aromatic removalfor naphthenic lubricating base oils could be enhanced by increasing either the S/O ratio or the extraction temperature, although these measures had limited effects in practice. Following this, we used the non-random two-liquid (NRTL) modelbased on the pseudo-component approach to simulate the liquid-liquid equilibrium of the system of DMSO + naphtheniclubricating base oils, and determined the parameters of binary interaction through regression based on the data on phaseequilibrium. The modeling results showed that the predicted yield, content of the solvent, and composition of the raffinatesand extracts were in good agreement with those obtained in the experiments. This validates the reliability of the model usedto represent the DMSO + naphthenic lubricating base oil system. Both the experimental data and the method of simulationreported here can help optimize the extraction of naphthenic lubricating base oils, and provide a better understanding of thecorresponding process. 展开更多

Extraction of castor oil from castor seeds was investigated using different green solvents which include d-limonene, p-cymene, α-pinene, ethanol, and furfural at the temperature range of (323 - 413) K. The Soxhlet extraction method was employed to investigate the effect of temperature at atmospheric pressure. The focus of the study was to investigate a potential green solvent that can produce the high yields compared to the traditional solvent (hexane). The results show that at the average time of 3 hours and 30 minutes, the castor oil yield for green solvents were ranked as furfural (47.13%) > ethanol (45.37%) > p-cymene (39.15%) > d-limonene (39.13%) > α-pinene (38.11%). These castor oil yields were obtained at optimum temperatures for each green solvent. The castor oil yields were compared to the yield of hexane (31.36%) at same average time. The green solvents were recovered by using simple distillation, except furfural which was difficult to be recovered. 展开更多

In the petrochemical industry process, the relative volatility between the components to be separated is close to one or the azeotrope that systems are difficult to separate. Liquid-liquid extraction is a common and effective separation method, and selecting an extraction agent is the key to extraction technology research. In this paper, a design method of extractants based on elements and chemical bonds was proposed. A knowledge-based molecular design method was adopted to pre-select elements and chemical bond groups. The molecules were automatically synthesized according to specific combination rules to avoid the problem of “combination explosion” of molecules. The target properties of the extractant were set, and the extractant meeting the requirements was selected by predicting the correlation physical properties of the generated molecules. Based on the separation performance of the extractant in liquid-liquid extraction and the relative importance of each index, the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation membership function was established, the analytic hierarchy process determined the mass ratio of each index, and the consistency test results were passed. The results of case study based on quantum chemical analysis demonstrated that effective determination of extractants for the analysis of benzene-cyclohexane systems. The results unanimously prove that the method has important theoretical significance and application value. 展开更多

Data-derived normal mode extraction is an effective method for extracting normal mode depth functions in the absence of marine environmental data. However, when the corresponding singular vectors become nonunique when two or more singular values obtained from the cross-spectral density matrix diagonalization are nearly equal, this results in unsatisfactory extraction outcomes for the normal mode depth functions. To address this issue,we introduced in this paper a range-difference singular value decomposition method for the extraction of normal mode depth functions. We performed the mode extraction by conducting singular value decomposition on the individual frequency components of the signal's cross-spectral density matrix. This was achieved by using pressure and its range-difference matrices constructed from vertical line array data. The proposed method was validated using simulated data.In addition, modes were successfully extracted from ambient noise. 展开更多

The present work aimed at the study of citric acid solvent extraction in order to establish the composition of the organic phase and to obtain thermodynamic and kinetic data for the chosen system. Discontinuous extraction experiments in a single stage were performed from a synthetic solution of citric acid, with the typical concentration (10% w/v) observed in industrial fermented musts. Exploratory experiments were carried out using different organic phases in order to select the most suitable solvent phase to further continuous extraction tests in a mechanically agitated column. The selected organic phase composition was: Alamine? 336, ExxalTM 13 tridecyl alcohol, and the aliphatic diluent EscaidTM 110. Next, the effects of the contact time and of the concentrations of extractant and modifier on the citric acid extraction were studied. Among the investigated conditions, the best one was 10 minutes of contact time, 30% w/v of Alamine? 336, and 10% w/v of ExxalTM 13 tridecyl alcohol. For this condition, the equilibrium isotherm (28°C ± 2°C) was determined, and the equilibrium constant was calculated (36.8 (mol·L-1)-1.5). It was considered that trioctylamine and citric acid complexation reaction occurs mainly with non-dissociated citric acid form, because the aqueous feed solutions’ pH is lower than the citric acid pKa1. It was found that 1.5 molecules of the extractant, on average, are required to react with one citric acid molecule, which can indicate that reactions with different extractant/citric acid ratios occur simultaneously. Next, the rate constants for the direct and inverse reactions, 2.10 (mol·L-1)-1.5·s-1 and 5.69 × 10-2 s-1, respectively, were calculated. Coefficients of determination (R2) values higher than 0.93 were found in these calculations, suggesting that the results obtained using a computer modeling would be very close to those results obtained experimentally. Therefore, the present work provides data required to future modelling, design, and simulation of citric acid solvent extraction processes. 展开更多

The application of soxhlet, ultrasonic and accelerated solvent extractiontechniques to the analysis of six organochlorine pesticides (α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, o, p'-DDT,p,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE) in Taihu Lake sediment samples is described. It was found that the limits ofquantification ranged from 0.002 μg g^(-1) to 0.004 μg g^(-1), and the recoveries oforganochlorine pesticides with the three extraction techniques were acceptable ( 】80.7%). With amass selective detector, better results were obtained by accelerated solvent extraction usinghexane-acetone (1:1) as compared with soxhlet and ultrasonic extraction. It was shown that theaccelerated solvent extraction was the optimum technique for the analysis of organochlorinepesticides in sediments. The general features of the three extraction techniques are also presented. 展开更多
