A combined structure with the unit cell consisting of four sub-units with 90° rotation in turn is designed. Each of sub-units is composed of two gold rods in transverse arrangement and one gold rod in longitudinal arrangement. Simulating electromagnetic responses of the structure, we verify that the structure exhibits the double Fano resonances, which originate from the coupling between magnetic quadrupoles and electric dipoles and the coupling between electric quadrupoles and electric dipoles. Simulation results also demonstrate that the structure is polarization-insensitive and shows an analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency at the two Fano resonances. Such a plasmonic structure has potential applications in photoelectric elements. 展开更多

A symmetric plasmonie structure consisting of metal-insulator metal waveguide, groove studied, which supports double Fano resonances deriving from two different mechanisms and slot cavities is One of the Fano resonances originates from the interference between the resonances of groove and slot cavities, and the other comes from the interference between slot cavities. The spectral line shapes and the peaks of the double Fano resonances can be modulated by changing the length of the slot cavities and the height of the groove. Furthermore, the wavelength of the resonance peak has a linear relationship with the length of the slot cavities. The proposed plasmonic nanosensor possesses a sensitivity of 800nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 3150, which may have important applications in switches, sensors, and nonlinear devices. 展开更多

A single baffle metal–insulator–metal(MIM)waveguide coupled with a semi-circular cavity and a cross-shaped cavity is proposed based on the multiple Fano resonance characteristics of surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs)subwavelength structure.The isolated state formed by two resonators interferes with the wider continuous state mode formed by the metal baffle,forming Fano resonance that can independently be tuned into five different modes.The formation mechanism of Fano resonance is analyzed based on the multimode interference coupled mode theory(MICMT).The finite element method(FEM)and MICMT are used to simulate the transmission spectra of this structure and analyze the influence of structural parameters on the refractive index sensing characteristics.And the transmission responses calculated by the FEM simulation are consistent with the MICMT theoretical results very well.The results show that the figure of merit(FOM)can reach 193 and the ultra-high sensitivity is 1600 nm/RIU after the structure parameters have been optimized,and can provide theoretical basis for designing the high sensitive refractive index sensors based on SPPs waveguide for high-density photonic integration with excellent performance in the near future. 展开更多

Detection of local strain at the nanometer scale with high sensitivity remains challenging.Here we report near-field infrared nano-imaging of local strains in bilayer graphene by probing strain-induced shifts of phonon frequency.As a non-polar crystal,intrinsic bilayer graphene possesses little infrared response at its transverse optical phonon frequency.The reported optical detection of local strain is enabled by applying a vertical electrical field that breaks the symmetry of the two graphene layers and introduces finite electrical dipole moment to graphene phonon.The activated phonon further interacts with continuum electronic transitions,and generates a strong Fano resonance.The resulted Fano resonance features a very sharp near-field infrared scattering peak,which leads to an extraordinary sensitivity of-0.002%for the strain detection.Our results demonstrate the first nano-scale near-field Fano resonance,provide a new way to probe local strains with high sensitivity in non-polar crystals,and open exciting possibilities for studying strain-induced rich phenomena. 展开更多

The results indicate that the introduction of Fano resonance due to symmetry breaking leads to a much wider absorption range. Fano Resonances Can Provide Two Criteria to Distinguish Majorana Bound States from Other Candidates in Experiments

We propose tha... There are still debates on whether the observed zero energy peak in the experiment by Stevan et al. [Science 346 (2014) 602] reveals the existence of the long pursued Ala.jorana bound states (MBSs). We propose that, by mounting two scanning tunneling microscopic tips on top of the topological superconducting chain and measuring the transmission spectrum between these two metallic tips, there are two kinds of characteristics on the spectrum that are caused by A.IBSs uniquely: One is symmetric peaks with respect to zero energy and the other is 4~r period caused by a nearby dosephson junction. The former refers to the fact that MBSs are eomposited by Alajorana fermions which distributed in the particle and hole subspaees equally. The latter is based on the well known 4w period of Josephson effect in topological superconductor. We think that such two characteristics can be used as criteria to distinguish MBSs from other candidates, such as impurities, Kondo effect and traditional Andreev bound states. 展开更多

A new type of device consisting of a lithium niobate film coupled with a distributed Bragg reflector(DBR)was theoretically proposed to explore and release Bloch surface waves for applications in sensing and detection.The film and grating made of lithium niobate(LiNbO_(3))were placed on both sides of the DBR and a concentrated electromagnetic field was formed at the film layer.By adjusting the spatial incidence angle of the incident light,two detection and analysis modes were obtained,including surface diffraction detection and guided Bloch detection.Surface diffraction detection was used to detect the gas molecule concentrations,while guided Bloch detection was applied for the concentration detection of biomolecule-modulated biological solutions.According to the drift of the Fano curve,the average sensor sensitivities from the analysis of the two modes were 1560°/RIU and 1161°/RIU,and the maximum detection sensitivity reached2320/RIU and 2200°/RIU,respectively.This study revealed the potential application of LiNbO_(3)as a tunable material when combined with DBR to construct a new type of biosensor,which offered broad application prospects in Bloch surface wave biosensors. 展开更多

A gold dimer structure consisting of a notched triangle nanoslice and a rectangle nanorod is proposed to produce distinct Fano resonance. Owing to the coupling between the dipole plasmon mode of the nanorod and the dipole or quadrupole plasmon mode of the nanoslice, the extinction spectrum with a deep Fano dip is formed and can be well fitted by the Fano interference model for different geometry parameters. In addition, Fano resonance of the gold dimer nanostructure also intensely depends on the polarization direction of incident light. Moreover, Fano resonance of the triangle–rod trimer is also analyzed by adding another nanorod into the former dimer and exhibits the splitting of plasmonic resonant peak in high order coupling modes. The plasmonic hybridizations in these nanostructures have been analyzed for revealing the physical origin of the Fano resonance. 展开更多

We consider a discrete model that describes a linear chain of particles coupled to an isolated ring composed of N defects. This simple system can be regarded as a generalization of the familiar Fano Anderson model. It can be used to model discrete networks of coupled defect modes in photonic crystals and simple waveguide arrays in two-dimensional lattices. The analytical result of the transmission coefficient is obtained, along with the conditions for perfect reflections and transmissions due to either destructive or constructive interferences. Using a simple example, we further investigate the relationship between the resonant frequencies and the number of defects N, and study how to affect the numbers of perfect reflections and transmissions. In addition, we demonstrate how these resonance transmissions and refections can be tuned by one nonlinear defect of the network that possesses a nonlinear Kerr-like response. 展开更多

We propose a hybrid structure of a nano-cube array coupled with multilayer full-dielectric thin films for refractive index sensing.In this structure,discrete states generated by two-dimensional grating and continuous states generated by a photonic crystal were coupled at a specific wavelength to form two Fano resonances.The transmission spectra and electric field distributions of the structure were obtained via the finite-difference time-domain method.We obtained the optimal structural parameters after optimizing the geometrical parameters.Under the optimal parameters,the figure of merit(FOM)values of the two Fano resonances reached 1.7×10^(4)and 3.9×10^(3),respectively.These results indicate that the proposed structure can achieve high FOM refractive index sensing,thus offering extensive application prospects in the biological and chemical fields. 展开更多

The structure has the advantage of being sensitive to the refractive index, and this feature makes it favorable for application in various microsensors. The relationship between the structural parameters and Fano resonance is researched using the finite element method(FEM) based on the software COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4. The simulation reveals that the sensitivity reaches1900 nm/refractive index unit(RIU), and the figure of merit(FOM) is 23.75. 展开更多

Fano interference of metallic nanostructure is an effective way to reduce the irradiation loss and improve the spectral resolution. A Π-shaped gold nano-trimer, which is composed of a gold nanorod and two gold nanorices, is presented to investigate the properties of Fano resonances in the visible spectrum by using the finite element method (FEM). The theoretical analysis demonstrates that the Fano resonance of the Π-shaped gold nano-trimer is attributed to the near-field interaction between the bright mode of the nanorice pair and the dark quadrupole mode of the nanorod. Furthermore, by breaking the geometric symmetry of the nanostructure the line-shape spectrum with double Fano resonances of Π-shaped gold nano-trimer is obtained and exhibits structure-dependent and medium-dependent characteristics. It is a helpful strategy to design a plasmonic nanostructure for implementing multiple Fano resonances in practical applications. 展开更多

Quantum interference plays an important role in tuning the transport property of nano-devices. Using the non- equilibrium Green's Function method in combination with density functional theory, we investigate the influence to the transport property of a CO molecule adsorbed on one edge of a zigzag graphene nanoribbon device. Our results show that the CO molecule-adsorbed zigzag graphene nanoribbon devices can exhibit the Fano resonance phenomenon. Moreover, the distance between CO molecules and zigzag graphene nanoribbons is closely related to the energy sites of the Fano resonance. Our theoretical analyses indicate that the Fano resonance would be attributed to the interaction between CO molecules and the edge of the zigzag graphene nanoribbon device, which results in the localization of electrons and significantly changes the transmission spectrum. 展开更多

Developing a convenient method that can be routinely applied for ascertaining proportions of different vegetable oils employed in commercial blended edible oils remains a significant challenge.We address this issue by proposing a novel method for detecting volume fraction of different oils based on the fact that these oils are optically transparent and have slightly different indices of refraction at a given temperature and wavelength.Accordingly,we develop a highly sensitive sensor for measuring the index of refraction of oil blends based on Fano resonance spectra obtained using a metal-insulatormetal(MIM)waveguide structure comprising a gapped straight waveguide coupled with two L-shaped resonators.The index of refraction sensitivity and figure of merit of the structure are calculated based on modeling using the finite element method,and the waveguide structure is accordingly optimized by adjusting the different geometric parameters to achieve a high-quality Fano resonance spectrum.The optimized structure achieves an ultra-high refractive index sensitivity of 770 nm/RIU in terms of a refractive index unit(RIU)of 1.Moreover,a highly stable linear relationship is obtained between the refractive index of mixed edible oils and the resonance wavelength.Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed structure can detect slight changes in the volume fractions of the components in blended oils. 展开更多

The application of three-dimensional(3D)plasmonic nanostructures as metamaterials(MMs),nano-antennas,and other devices faces challenges in producing metallic nanostructures with easily definable orientations,sophistic... The application of three-dimensional(3D)plasmonic nanostructures as metamaterials(MMs),nano-antennas,and other devices faces challenges in producing metallic nanostructures with easily definable orientations,sophisticated shapes,and smooth surfaces that are operational in the optical regime and beyond.Here,we demonstrate that complex 3D nanostructures can be readily achieved with focused-ion-beam irradiation-induced folding and examine the optical characteristics of plasmonic“nanograter”structures that are composed of free-standing Au films.These 3D nanostructures exhibit interesting 3D hybridization in current flows and exhibit unusual and well-scalable Fano resonances at wavelengths ranging from 1.6 to 6.4 mm.Upon the introduction of liquids of various refractive indices to the structures,a strong dependence of the Fano resonance is observed,with spectral sensitivities of 1400 nm and 2040 nm per refractive index unit under figures of merit of 35.0 and 12.5,respectively,for low-order and high-order resonance in the near-infrared region.This work indicates the exciting,increasing relevance of similarly constructed 3D free-standing nanostructures in the research and development of photonics and MMs. 展开更多

Cascaded optical field enhancement(CFE)can be realized in some specially designed multiscale plasmonic nanostructures,in which the generation of extremely strong fields at nanoscale volume is crucial for many applications,for example,surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS).In this paper,we propose a strategy for realizing a high-quality plasmonic nanoparticle-in-cavity(PIC)nanoantenna array,in which strong coupling between a nanoparticle(NP)dark mode with a high-order nanocavity bright mode can produce strong Fano resonance at the target wavelength.The Fano resonance can effectively boost the CFE in a PIC.A cost-effective and reliable nanofabrication method is developed using room temperature nanoimprinting lithography to manufacture high-quality PIC arrays.This technique guarantees the generation of only one gold NP at the bottom of each nanocavity,which is crucial for the generation of the expected CFE.To demonstrate the performance and application of the PIC array,the PIC array is employed as an active SERS substrate for detecting 4-aminothiophenol molecules.An experimental SERS enhancement factor of 2×10^(7) is obtained,which verifies the field enhancement and the potential of this device. 展开更多

A refractive index sensor based on Fano resonances in metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides coupled with rectangular and dual side rings resonators is proposed. The sensing properties are numerically simulated by the finite element method (FEM). For the interaction of the narrow-band spectral response and the broadband spectral response caused by the side-coupled resonators and the rectangular resonator, respectively, the transmission spectra exhibit a sharp and asymmetric profile. Results are analyzed using the coupled-mode theory based on the transmission line theory. The coupled mode theory is employed to explain the Fano resonance effect. The results show that with an increase in the refractive index of the fill dielectric material in the slot of the system, the Fano resonance peak exhibits a remarkable red shift. Through the optimization of structural parameters, we achieve a theoretical value of the refractive index sensitivity (S) as high as 1160 nm/RIU, and the corresponding sensing resolution is 8.62 × 10 -5 RIU. In addition, the coupled MIM waveguide structure can be easily extended to other similar compact structures to realize the sensing task and integrated with other photonic devices at the chip scale. This work paves the way toward the sensitive nanometer scale refractive index sensor for design and application. 展开更多

We theoretically investigate the optical properties of dimers consisting of a gold nanosphere and a silicon nanosphere. The absorption spectrum of the gold sphere in the dimer can be significantly altered and exhibits a pronounced Fano profile. Analytical Mie theory and numerical simulations show that the Fano profile is induced by constructive and destructive interference between the incident electric field and the electric field of the magnetic dipole mode of the silicon sphere in a narrow wavelength range. The effects of the silicon sphere size, distance between the two spheres, and excitation configuration on the optical responses of the dimers are studied. Our study reveals the coherent feature of the electric fields of magnetic dipole modes in dielectric nanostructures and the strong interactions of the coherent fields with other nanophotonic structures. 展开更多
