In recent papers, Babolian & Delves [2] and Belward[3] described a Chebyshev series method for the solution of first kind integral equations. The expansion coefficients of the solution are determined as the solution of a mathematical programming problem.The method involves two regularization parameters, Cf and r, but values assigned to these parameters are heuristic in nature. Essah & Delves[7] described an algorithm for setting these parameters automatically, but it has some difficulties. In this paper we describe three iterative algorithms for computing these parameters for singular and non-singular first kind integral equations. We give also error estimates which are cheap to compute. Finally, we give a number of numerical examples showing that these algorithms work well in practice. 展开更多

Using this extrapolation formula, we obtain some asymptotic expansions of the Galerkin finite element method for semi-simple eigenvalue problems of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind and improve the accuracy of the numerical approximations of the corresponding eigenvalues. Considerations of nonlocal elasticity and surface effects in micro-and nanoscale beams are both important for the accurate prediction of natural frequency. In this study, the governing equation of a nonlocal Timoshenko beam with surface effects is established by taking into account three types of boundary conditions: hinged–hinged, clamped–clamped and clamped–hinged ends. For a hinged–hinged beam, an exact and explicit natural frequency equation is obtained. However, for clamped–clamped and clamped–hinged beams, the solutions of corresponding frequency equations must be determined numerically due to their transcendental nature. Hence, the Fredholm integral equation approach coupled with a curve fitting method is employed to derive the approximate fundamental frequency equations, which can predict the frequency values with high accuracy. In short,explicit frequency equations of the Timoshenko beam for three types of boundary conditions are proposed to exhibit directly the dependence of the natural frequency on the nonlocal elasticity, surface elasticity, residual surface stress, shear deformation and rotatory inertia, avoiding the complicated numerical computation. 展开更多

Three types of boundary conditions, i.e., hinged-hinged, clamped-clamped, and clamped-hinged ends, are examined. For a hinged-hinged beam, an exact and explicit natural frequency equation is derived based on the established mathematical model. The Fredholm integral equation is adopted to deduce the approximate fundamental frequency equations for the clamped-clamped and clamped-hinged beams. In sum, the explicit frequency equations for the micro/nanobeam under three types of boundary conditions are proposed to reveal the dependence of the natural frequency on the effects of the nonlocal elasticity, the surface elasticity, the residual surface stress, and the rotatory inertia, providing a more convenient means in comparison with numerical computations. 展开更多

The frictional heat generation inside the contact region due to the sliding of the punch over the half-space surface and the heat radiation outside the contact region are taken into account. With the help of Fourier integral transform, the problem is reduced to a system of two singular integral equations. The non-axisymmetrical vibration of elastic circular plate resting on a layered transversely isotropic saturated ground was studied. First, the 3-d dynamic equations in cylindrical coordinate for transversely isotropic saturated soils were transformed into a group of governing differential equations with 1-order by the technique of Fourier expanding with respect to azimuth, and the state equation is established by Hankel integral transform method, furthermore the transfer matrixes within layered media are derived based on the solutions of the state equation. Secondly, by the transfer matrixes, the general solutions of dynamic response for layered transversely isotropic saturated ground excited by an arbitrary harmonic force were established under the boundary conditions, drainage conditions on the surface of ground as well as the contact conditions. Thirdly, the problem was led to a pair of dual integral equations describing the mixed boundaryvalue problem which can be reduced to the Fredholm integral equations of the second kind solved by numerical procedure easily. At the end of this paper, a numerical result concerning vertical and radical displacements both the surface of saturated ground and plate is evaluated. 展开更多

We propose two error control techniques for numerical integrations in fast multiscale collocation methods for solving Fredholm integral equations of the second kind with weakly singular kernels. Both techniques utilize quadratures for singular integrals using graded points. One has a polynomial order of accuracy if the integrand has a polynomial order of smoothness except at the singular point and the other has exponential order of accuracy if the integrand has an infinite order of smoothness except at the singular point. We estimate the order of convergence and computational complexity of the corresponding approximate solutions of the equation. We prove that the second technique preserves the order of convergence and computational complexity of the original collocation method. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the theoretical estimates. 展开更多

A study of the dynamic interaction between foundation and the underlying soil has been presented in a recent paper based on the assumption of saturated ground and elastic circular plate excited by the axisymmetrical harmonic source. However, the assumption may not always be valid. The work is extended to the case of a circular plate resting on transversely isotropic saturated soil and subjected to a non-axisymmetrical harmonic force. The analysis is based on the theory of elastic wave in transversely isotropic saturated poroelastic media established. By the technique of Fourier expansion and Hankel transform, the governing difference equations for transversely isotropic saturated soil are easily solved and the cooresponding Hankel transformed stress and displacement solutions are obtained. Then, under the contact conditions, the problem leads to a pair of dual integral equations which describe the mixed boundary-value problem. Furthermore, the dual integral equations can be reduced to the Fredholm integral equations of the second kind solved by numerical procedure. At the end, a numerical result is presented which indicates that on a certain frequency range, the displacement amplitude of the surface of the foundation increases with the increase of the frequency of the exciting force, and decreases in vibration form with the increase of the distance. 展开更多
