Background:Social support is related to depression, but the gender differences and related factors that contribute to low social support among adolescents with subthreshold depression remain to be elucidated. This study explores the relationship between social support and depression,in addition to the gender difference in the incidence of low social support among adolescents with subthreshold depression and its related factors. Methods:A total of 371 Chinese adolescents with subthreshold depression were recruited. All subjects were rated on the Social Support Scale for Adolescents, the Response Style Scale, the Self-Perception Profile for Children, the Individualism-collectivism scale. Results:Binary logistic regression indicated that the stability dimension of cognitive style, the generality dimension of the Cognitive Style Questionnaire, and the social acceptance dimension of the Self-Perception Profile for Children scale were significantly correlated with social support level in male adolescents with subthreshold depression. In contrast, the total score of the Self-Perception Profile for Children scale, the social acceptance of the Self-Perception Profile for Children scale, total individualism, and total collectivism were significantly correlated with social support level in female adolescents with subthreshold depression.Limitations:This study is a cross-sectional study, and its effectiveness in explaining factors that influence levels of social support is limited. Conclusions:The gender difference between low social support among adolescents with subthreshold depression is related to cognitive style,self-perception,and collectivism–individualism. 展开更多

This paper offers a detailed study of the issue of social formation and social order in Hesiod’s cosmogony.I argue that, according to Hesiod’s genesis theory, order in a society cannot be established organically through social formation. The main difficulty lies in the nature of society itself where the dualistic opposition in the male-female sexual relationship leads to endless conflicts between the two sexes and, further, between generations. To deal with the sexual relationship properly is the key to maintaining a stable social order. In the poem, the mother’s‘dark womb’is presented as a prominent image at every crucial moment of social formation and social(dis)ordering in both the divine and the human worlds.Taking this image as a clue,we can see that the issue of sexuality has a profound impact on social order, and also serves as a key to understanding divinity and humanity in Hesiod’s cosmogony. 展开更多

Little is known about the association between structural gender inequality and health in patriarchal China. This study employed a sample from the Chinese Women’s Social Status, consisting of 26,139 participants aged 18 and 70 years(13,494 women and 12,645 men).Structural gender inequality was assessed at the macro-,meso-,and micro-levels.Mental health was measured by the summed scores of eight questions on depressive symptoms.Multilevel linear regression was applied for analysis. Results showed that total sex ratio at birth was associated with poorer mental health among women and men but sex ratio at birth of the second-born child predicted better mental health.Gender inequality at meso-level resulted in poorer mental health and gender inequality at micro-level was associated with poorer mental health both for men and women.Eliminating structural gender inequality promotes populations’mental health in China. 展开更多

Gender analysis of Twitter could reveal significant socio-cultural differ-ences between female and male users.Efforts had been made to analyze and auto-matically infer gender formerly for more commonly spoken languages’content, but,as we now know that limited work is being undertaken for Arabic. Most of the research works are done mainly for English and least amount of effort for non-English language. The study for Arabic demographic inference like gen-der is relatively uncommon for social networking users, especially for Twitter. Therefore, this study aims to design an optimal marginalized stacked denoising autoencoder for gender identification on Arabic Twitter(OMSDAE-GIAT)model.The presented OMSDAE-GIAR technique mainly concentrates on the identifica-tion and classification of gender exist in the Twitter data.To attain this, the OMS-DAE-GIAT model derives initial stages of data pre-processing and word embedding.Next, the MSDAE model is exploited for the identification of gender into two classes namely male and female. In the final stage, the OMSDAE-GIAT technique uses enhanced bat optimization algorithm(EBOA)for parameter tuning process, showing the novelty of our work. The performance validation of the OMSDAE-GIAT model is inspected against an Arabic corpus dataset and the results are measured under distinct metrics. The comparison study reported the enhanced performance of the OMSDAE-GIAT model over other recent approaches. 展开更多

The social gender theory is a historical analysis method which is benificial to explore the system of human organization activities around "male"or "female" activities. Historically, the process of human socialization is also a process of social gender institutionalization. Therefore, the paper tried to analyze the connotation of ethnic women's costume from the social gender perspective to help people realize further the women's state in sexism society and value in ethnic group constructing and developing. Firstly, the paper sets forth the characteristic of "group" of ethnic people female costumes. The next, the paper explored the costume how to set up a system of ethic standard in inner group so as to maintain the social order. Subsequently, the paper points out, with the rapid evolution of society, more and more ethnic people men participate cities construction and outer social activities Consequently, most of minority men wear modem clothing instead of their traditional clothing, only women still insist in wearing the traditional clothing. Finally, according to research above, the authors consider that ethnic people female costumes emerge strong gender content which reflects more constraints rather than equality between men and women. Besides, it is certain that women have irreplaceable value in ethinc group construction and development. 展开更多

More and more UK-based researches begin to focus on the British White population,as they are the main ethic group in UK society that leads and influences the development of UK education and society.According to the UK government figures in 2018,statistics show that“the employment rate of British White stood at 75%,with the overall employment rate in the UK stood at 74%”(UK Government,2018).At the GCSE level in 2018,it is demonstrated that“there are more than 63%of British White pupils who achieved A*to C levels in English and Mathematics exams”(UK Government,2018),higher than the excellence rate of Mixed(30%),Black Caribbean(51%),and Pakistani(58%).It is obvious that British White people are highly prioritized in UK society, especially in educational fields due to the unequal distribution of educational resources between British Whites and other ethnic groups in UK society. However, there are also some of the inequalities that exist among British Whites,as their differences gender, regions, and socio-economic status. This paper aims to have an exploration on the British White education in a further step in terms of how the inequalities exist in their education, primarily from the lens of international education as assimilation, social reproduction, and gender issues. 展开更多

Purpose:The aims of this study were to(a)describe gender inequalities in physical activity(PA)among adolescents from Global South countries, and(b)investigate the relationship between gender inequalities in PA and contextual factors, such as geographic region, human development index, gender inequality index, and unemployment rates. Methods:We analyzed cross-sectional data from the Global School-Based Student Health Survey conducted in Global South countries between 2010 and 2020 among 13-to 17-year-old adolescents.Country-context variables were retrieved from secondary data sources(World Health Organization,World Bank, and Human Development Reports).PA was assessed by a self-administered questionnaire querying the number of days in the past week in which participants were physically active for a total of at least 60 min.PA absolute gender inequalities were evaluated by the differences in the prevalence between boys and girls,95%confidence intervals(95%CIs)were estimated using the bootstrap method.Relative inequalities were obtained through Poisson regression.Meta-analyses with random effects were used to calculate pooled estimates of absolute and relative inequalities. Results:Based on 64 Global South countries/surveys,the prevalence of PA was 6.7 percentage points(p.p.)higher in boys than in girls, ranging from 0.5 p.p.in Afghanistan to 15.6 p.p.in Laos(I^(2)=85.1%).The pooled ratio for all countries showed that boys presented a PA prevalence 1.58 times higher than girls(95%CI:1.47-1.70)on average. The highest absolute and relative inequalities were observed in high income countries.Countries with higher Human Development Index rankings and lower Gender Inequality Index rankings also presented greater gender differences. Conclusion:Given that girls are overall less active than boys across the globe, the findings of this study reinforce that macro-and micro-level changes should be actively sought if we aim to increase population levels of PA in adolescents and promote equity in PA. 展开更多

The present study examined disclosure and use of privacy settings in online social networking profiles as a function of the media context (i.e., online versus hard copy (paper and pencil) FacebookTM profiles). Gender was also examined. Overall, participants disclosed more information when constructing a profile for another person when using a hard copy paper and pencil format than an online context. Gender differences were not uniform across media contexts, however, in contrast to traditional disclosure theory, females censored their disclosures more so than males but only for some topics. Only 20% of the sample increased their use of privacy settings. Consistent with patterns of disclosure, descriptive comparison suggests that more settings were employed in the paper and pencil than online context and more privacy settings were employed by females. 展开更多

Background: Research on gender in Parkinson’s disease (PD) frequently focuses on clinical differences between men and women. Socioeconomic factors such as race, ethnicity, insurance type, and level of educational attainment, have not been extensively examined in relation to gender differences in PD. The goal of this study was to identify differences in PD presentation in men and women, and identify socioeconomic factors that may confound such differences. Methods: A movement disorder patient database containing 445 patients with idiopathic PD was analyzed for gender differences in motor symptoms and disease complications using linear or logistic regression. Socioeconomic variables were then evaluated as possible confounders. Results: A greater proportion of women were non-white (p < 0.05). Univariate analysis of gender, and multivariate analysis controlling for age at diagnosis and socioeconomic factors were concordant in demonstrating increased frequency of motor fluctuations and dyskinesia in women (p < 0.05). Controlled, multivariate analysis, when compared to univariate analysis, uniquely demonstrated that women were less likely to experience dementia and autonomic dysfunction, relative to men (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Women with PD are susceptible to motor fluctuations and dyskinesia, but may be relatively protected against dementia and autonomic dysfunction. Women and men with PD in our population had different socioeconomic profiles, which may have confounded some gender-associated differences. 展开更多

This study discusses how Liking(1996)in The Power of Um and Onwueme(1992)in The Reign of Wazobia anchor complex negotiations of public and private identities on gender as a site of enactments of power.Through experimentation with dramatic techniques, the selected Cameroonian and Nigerian women playwrights emphasize the centrality of gender as a site for a sustained critique of the larger social formations. The paper hypothesizes that Liking’s and Onwueme’s plays are thematically ambitious and stylistically experimental demonstrating a dynamic process through which the dramatists integrate concrete experiences into their creative consciousness in gender-conscious ways.In that respect, gender stands out as the performance space of struggle between the performance of power to maintain hegemony and the power of performance for social change. For scientific vigour, the study uses the gender relations approach to demonstrate how the playwrights appropriate the dynamics of performance to translate, interpret and challenge deeply ingrained patriarchal paradigms and also to explain, theorize and account for the complex realities of African women’s lives. 展开更多

Purpose: To examine the impact of gender and social gender on the level and typology of interictal aggressiveness in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Material and Methods: 40 adult patients with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) and 86 healthy individuals were included. The qualitative and quantitative aggressiveness assess- ment was made with Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory. The gender role behavior was measured with Bem Sex Role Inventory. Results: Patients with TLE didn’t differ from healthy subjects on the total scores of motor and attitudinal hostility components, but scored higher on subscales “resentment” and “guilt”. The comparative gender analysis showed there were no phenomenological differences in people with TLE. Assault dominated in healthy male subjects, resentment—in healthy female subjects. The prevalence of feminine social gender type was significantly higher in people with TLE in comparison to healthy people (55% vs. 26%, p 0.01). In patients with TLE, the number of masculine traits positively correlated with indirect hostility subscale and attitudinal hostility component scores. In healthy subjects, the masculine traits positively correlated with assault. 展开更多

Mangrove utilization and management were observed done by men and women depending on their needs and priorities in Casiguran, Aurora. This study, therefore, tried to investigate the gender roles in the utilization and management of mangrove forests, the existing mangrove management practices and their challenges, and the relationship between gender and mangrove resources management. A mixed-method approach was used and data were obtained through triangulation. Respondents were obtained through snowball sampling and interviewed using a structured questionnaire with a few open-ended questions. Results revealed that the majority of the respondents were women (60.7%) and residents of Brgy. Esteves (52.5%) live within or near the mangrove forest. Mostly married (59%) who were providing food and income for the family. They utilized mangrove woods (58.20%) with an average quantity of less than 10 board feet (34.4%) for cooking (40.2%). Roots were utilized in minimal amounts (2.50%) for mythical, medicine, and cork purposes. Mollusks (93.44%), commonly bivalves (93.4%), were primarily gleaned by women for food consumption (93.4%) and as a source of income (93. 61%). On the other hand, catching of crabs (57.4%) for consumption (56.6%) and as a source of income (14.8%) and catching of fish (31.1%) for consumption (27.9%) were done by men. Both genders were involved in mangrove management practices, although only 65% of them had actual involvement in mangrove planting, 19% in mangrove nursery development and maintenance, and 16% in mangrove plantation maintenance. Challenges in management include low survival rate of planted mangroves (33%), lack of maintenance activity (20%), and lack of funds for mobilization (20%). A chi-square test of independence revealed that both men and women have no significant difference in their involvement in nursery establishment and maintenance, mangrove planting, and plantation management. 展开更多
