Second Language Transfer in Third Language Acquisition: An Empirical Study of Chinese English Majors Learning German as Third Language

Guided by the theory of language transfer,this paper examines the transfer of English(second language)in the early stages of the acquisition of German(third language)by Chinese English majors.The results reveal that English has both positive and negative effects on German acquisition,especially on German pronunciation,vocabulary and sentence learning.On the basis of these findings,some suggestions are also put forward in order to improve the efficiency of third language(German)teaching,namely,English-as-a-vehicular-language teaching,contrastive teaching and corpus-based teaching.

Multimodal Metaphor Analysis of German Commercials

This research examines the characteristics of multimodal metaphors utilized by German advertisers in their commercial designs.Commercial advertisements inherently incorporate a diverse array of communicative symbols,encompassing textual,visual,and auditory elements,which collaboratively function to construct metaphoric representations.Consequently,these advertisements are characterized by a rich presence of multimodal metaphors,strategically crafted to leave a lasting impression on viewers and to stimulate the purchasing intentions of targeted demographics.Employing a cognitive linguistics framework,this paper conducts a comparative analysis of the multimodal metaphors present in three exemplary German commercials:K-fee,Coca-Cola Zero,and Pure Milk.The findings illuminate the effective deployment of multimodal strategies in enhancing message transmission and fostering consumer engagement within the advertising landscape.

Management Practices:Shaping Employee Satisfaction and Commitment in Large German Companies

The rapid evolution of the political,economic,and social landscape has generated increased interest in understanding the contextual application of management styles and behaviours toward employees.In this context,organizations must comprehend and assess employee satisfaction to enhance productivity and realize their strategic and economic goals.Therefore,this study aims to investigate the prevailing and significant management behaviours toward employees in large German companies and their impact on employee satisfaction and job commitment.To achieve the research objective,the study will employ a qualitative method to explore management behaviours toward employees.Data were collected through interviews with randomly selected managers from different companies and departments.The study aims to uncover discrepancies or variations in employee expectations regarding management behaviour.The findings will provide a better understanding of the most prevalent and significant management behaviours toward employees in large German companies and their impact on employee satisfaction and job commitment.The results will be valuable to management in adopting suitable leadership styles and improving employee satisfaction,leading to increased productivity and organizational performance.The research will contribute to the existing body of knowledge in the field of management and human resource management by providing insights into the impact of management behaviours on employees.It will also offer recommendations to management on how to enhance employee satisfaction and job commitment,leading to improved organizational performance.In conclusion,this study will investigate the prevailing management behaviours toward employees in large German companies and their impact on employee satisfaction and job commitment.

Medical Propaganda and Cultural Communication:The Establishment,Development,and Influence of the German Poliklinik in Chongqing(1906-1919)

At the beginning of the twentieth century,cultural policy became a central element of Germany’s expansionist foreign policy toward China.In this context,the German government had a Poliklinik established in Chongqing in 1906,intending to leverage“medical propaganda”to extend German influence.Despite these ambitions,the Poliklinik faced socio-political challenges and local resistance,which hindered its ability to fully realize the German government’s political objectives.By the time the Poliklinik ceased operations in 1919,it had not achieved the strategic impact anticipated by Berlin.However,the Poliklinik contributed significantly to fostering mutual understanding and facilitating cross-cultural communication in the medical field between China and Germany.Thus,while initially conceived as an instrument of Germany’s cultural policy,the actual social and cultural influence of the Poliklinik on Germany and China was rather constructive:it had not only enhanced the understanding of German medicine and culture among the Chinese people,but also promoted knowledge about Southwest China’s medical conditions among the German academic community.

Clinically detected gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are on the rise: Epidemiological changes in Germany

AIM:To study the epidemiologic changes of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors(GEP-NET)in Germany,we analyzed two time periods 1976-1988 and1998-2006.METHODS:We evaluated epidemiological data of GEP-NET from the former East German National Cancer Registry(DDR Krebsregister,1976-1988)and its successor,the Joint Cancer Registry(GKR,1998-2006),which was founded after German reunification.Due to a particularly substantial database the epidemiological data from the federal states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania,Saxony,Brandenburg and Thuringia,covering a population of more than 10.8 million people,were analyzed.Survival probabilities were calculated using life table analysis.In addition,GEP-NET patients were evaluated for one or more second(non-GEP-NET)primary malignancies.RESULTS:A total of 2821 GEP neuroendocrine neoplasms were identified in the two registries.The overall incidence increased significantly between 1976 and2006 from 0.31(per 100.000 inhabitants per year)to2.27 for men and from 0.57 to 2.38 for women.In the later period studied(2004-2006),the small intestine was the most common site.Neuroendocrine(NE)neoplasms of the small intestine showed the largest absolute increase in incidence,while rectal NE neoplasms exhibited the greatest relative increase.Only the incidence of appendiceal NET in women showed little change between 1976 and 2006.Overall survival of patients varied for sex,tumor site and the two periods studied but improved significantly over time.Interestingly,about 20%of the GEP-NET patients developed one or more second malignancies.Their most common location was the gastrointestinal tract.GEP-NET patients without second malignancies fared better than those with one or more of them.CONCLUSION:The number of detected GEP-NET increased about 5-fold in Germany between 1976 and2006.At the same time,their anatomic distribution changed,and the survival of GEP-NET patients improved significantly.Second malignancies are common and influence the overall survival of GEP-NET patients.Thus,GEP-NET warrant our attention as well as intensive research on their tumorigenesis.

Habitat influences on diversity of bacteria found on German cockroach in Beijing

Cockroaches are worldwide indoor pests carrying microorganisms of medical importance. German cockroaches （Blattella germanica） were sampled in five habitats （hospital, restaurant, office home, and market） in Beijing, and the bacteria were isolated from their external surface and alimentary tract and identified using a Biolog identification system. Cockroach densities significantly differed among habitats （market 〉 home 〉 office 〉 restaurant 〉 hospital）. However, no significant differences in bacterial abundance carried by individual German cockroaches （of either sex） were found among habitats. The bacterial abundance in the gut was significantly higher than that on the surface. There were no significant differences in bacterial species richness observed among habitats, sex, carrying position or their interaction. Cluster analysis showed that cockroach densities and bacterial abundance found in the market differed significantly from the other four habitats. The bacterial diversity was not significantly reduced in sensitive facilities such as hospital and restaurant, even though pesticide and bactericide were more frequently applied there. The implications of these findings were discussed in this article.

Evaluation of proline, chlorophyll, soluble sugar content and uptake of nutrients in the German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) under drought stress and organic fertilizer treatments

Objective: To investigate the effect of drought stress and organic fertilizer on German chamomile(Matricaria chamomilla) nutrient uptake, leaf chlorophyll content and osmotic adjustment under field conditions.Methods: This experiment was carried out through a randomized complete block design with a split factorial arrangement of treatments in three replications. The main plots were subjected to the following irrigation treatments: irrigation after 60, 90, 120, 150 and180 mm evaporation from Class A pan. The sub-plots were treated with three vermicompost doses(0, 5 and 10 t/ha).Results: Although drought stress reduced the nutrient percentages in the shoots, application of vermicompost enhanced the nutrient percentages, particularly when the plants were subjected to moderate to severe drought stress conditions. Moreover, the results of this study showed that the interaction between irrigation treatments and vermicompost rates on leaf chlorophyll content was significant. Comparison between the combined treatments indicated that under normal irrigation and moderate drought stress conditions chamomile plants received 5 and 10 t/ha vermicompost showed significantly higher leaf chlorophyll content comparing to the control treatment.Conclusions: Totally, organic fertilization by vermicompost could partly alleviate the effect of drought stress on chamomile by increasing N, P and K uptake and leaf soluble sugar, especially in stressed treatments.

A Single-Frequency Linearly Polarized Fiber Laser Using a Newly Developed Heavily Tm3+-Doped Germanate Glass Fiber at 1.95 μm

A compact linearly polarized, low-noise, narrow-linewidth, single-frequency fiber laser at 1950nm is demonstrated. This compact fiber laser is based on a 21-mm-long homemade Tm3＋-doped germanate glass fiber. Over 100-mW stable continuous-wave single transverse and longitudinal mode lasing at 195Ohm are achieved. The measured relative intensity noise is less than -135dB/Hz at frequencies over 5 MHz. The signal-to-noise ratio of the laser is larger than 72dB, and the laser linewidth is less than 6kHz, while the obtained linear polarization extinction ratio is higher than 22 dB.

Bubble Generation in Germanate Glass Induced by Femtosecond Laser

We report the observation of bubble generation and migration in a germanate g/ass during irradiation by a femtosecond laser of high repetition rate. Bubbles are formed around the focal area of the laser beam, and their movement indicates the presence of thermal gravity convection in the glass melt, which is beyond the existing theoretical model about temperature l^eld of focal area. Inside the bubbles, oxygen molecules are observed by the con focal Raman micro-spectroscopy. The generation of molecular oxygen and bubbles is explained in terms of the spatial separation of Ge and 0 ions and micro-explosion inside the glass melt.

Gain properties of germanate glasses singly doped with Tm^(3+) and Ho^(3+) ions

Two kinds of germanate glasses singly doped with the ion concentration of 2.0mol.%Tm3＋ and 2.0mol.%Ho3＋, respectively, were prepared.According to McCumber theory, the absorption and stimulated emission cross-sections corresponding to the 3H6←→3F4 transitions of Tm3＋（at 1.8 μm） and the 5I8←→5I7 transitions of Ho3＋（at 2.0 μm） were obtained, and respective gain cross-section spectra were also computed as a function of population inversion according to absorption and emission cross-sections and the ion concentrations.For Tm3＋-doped germanate glasses, the maximum of the absorption, emission, and gain cross-sections reached a value higher than those reported for fluorozirconate, fluoride, and oxyfluoride glasses.For Ho3＋-doped germanate glasses, the maximum of absorption, emission, and gain cross-sections reached a value higher than that reported for fluorozircoaluminate glasses.Hence, these Tm3＋-doped and Ho3＋-doped germanate glasses exhibited an advantage for application in mid-infrared lasers at about 1.8 and 2.0 μm wavelength.

Practical Experience of Establishing German Standard Level 1 Perinatal Center in Chongqing Health Care for Women and Children

Germany,as a western developed country,has an advanced medical level,especially in the health care of very immature premature infants.We trace the medical history of perinatology to understand the development of perinatal centers in Germany.After analyzing the classification and function,hierarchical management and quality control systems of German perinatal centers,we established a German standard level 1 perinatal center in the Chongqing Health Center for Women and Children(CHCWC).During more than two years of practice,we changed concepts,continuously updated clinical knowledge and skills,developed a series o f high-quality work processes and supervision systems and introduced advanced medical equipment.We believe that the experience of establishing a German standard level 1 perinatal center and perinatal center network in Chongqing is worthy of being promoted to the Chinese maternal and child health care system.

Results of Sleeve Gastrectomy in Germany—Data on Nationwide Survey on Quality Assurance in Bariatric Surgery in Germany

Background: Since January 1st of 2005, the situation of bariatric surgery is being analyzed in Germany. The data is registered prospectively in cooperation with the Institute of Quality Assurance in Surgery at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg. Methods: The data is registered through an online database which includes all information for primary and revision bariatric procedures as well as yearly follow-up. Participation in the quality assurance study is optional. All certificated centers have to participate at the survey. Results: From January 2006 to December 2009, 1478 sleeve gastrectomies (SG) were performed at 45 hospitals. The number of procedures has increased from 126 in 2007 to 933 in 2009. The main complication is leakage of the staple-line. Initial leakage rate was 7% in 2007. Leakage rate dropped down to 2.3% in 2008 and 2.5% in 2009. Mean age of patients was 43.1 years and mean BMI was 52.83 kg/m2. Age and BMI were significantly higher in patients with SG than in all other patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Conclusion: SG is a common and hype bariatric procedure in Germany, but postoperative complication rate is high. Data on the long-term effect of SG on weight loss and amelioration of comorbidities need to be evaluated. More detailed analyzes are necessary to establish the position of SG in the bariatric surgery. Further studies should also include examinations on long-term complications and redo-procedure after SG.

Fiduciary Duties in Company Law:A German Perspective

As Chinese practitioners and scholars ponder the scope of fiduciary obligations under the country’s company law,this paper offers a comparative perspective from German law.Although German corporate law has not rejected legal transplants,the common law trust has never been accepted as an organizational device for administering third-party funds or doing business.Nonetheless,the German judiciary has developed a sophisticated concept of fiduciary obligations where the statutes remain silent.This paper explores the application of fiduciary obligations to limited partnerships,limited liability companies,and stock corporations.It takes a membership perspective to ascertain the legal relationships between a corporation and its shareholder-members and among fellow-shareholders,as business entities evolve from personalistic to capitalistic settings.Fiduciary obligations also inform the relationship between the corporation and its directors and corporate officers.Although German law does not classify directors and corporate officers as the shareholders’direct trustees,shareholders stand nonetheless to benefit from the way directors and corporate offices discharge their duties towards the respective corporate entities.Moreover,criminal law rules on embezzlement operate to protect the corporation and the monies it administers from overly risky business projects.

German Functionalist Approaches to the Chinese-English Translation of Commentaries in Ningxia Museum

Museum commentary emerges as the times demand. It falls into the category of publicity text. Not only does museum commentary play an important role in transferring information, but also in disseminating culture. Meanwhile, museum commentary translation is a prominent part of culture, carrying the task of cultural communication between China and foreign countries. However, scholars do not pay enough attention to museum commentary translation. Under the guidance of German functionalism, translators could pay much attention to the function of the museum commentary and adopt flexible translation strategies to fulfill it.

Operational Wave Now- and Forecast in the German Bight as a Basis for the Assessment of Wave-Induced Hydrodynamic Loads on Coastal Dikes

The knowledge of the wave-induced hydrodynamic loads on coastal dikes including their temporal and spatial resolution on the dike in combination with actual water levels is of crucial importance of any risk-based early warning system. As a basis for the assessment of the wave-induced hydrodynamic loads, an operational wave now-and forecast system is set up that consists of i) available field measurements from the federal and local authorities and ii) data from numerical simulation of waves in the German Bight using the SWAN wave model. In this study, results of the hindcast of deep water wave conditions during the winter storm on 5–6 December, 2013(German name ‘Xaver') are shown and compared with available measurements. Moreover field measurements of wave run-up from the local authorities at a sea dike on the German North Sea Island of Pellworm are presented and compared against calculated wave run-up using the Eur Otop(2016) approach.
