The China seas and adjacent areas contain numerous petroleum basins. One of the main challenges for future oil and gas exploration is to identify the inherent patterns of petroleum basin distribution. The formation and evolution of petroleum basins along with the migration and accumulation of oil and gas are often closely related to the tectonic environment. The gravity and magnetic fields with high lateral resolution and wide coverage provide important data for regional tectonic research.Based on the gravity data in the Global Satellite Gravity Anomaly Database(V31.1)and magnetic data from the Earth Magnetic Anomaly Grid(2-arc-minute resolution)(V2),this study uses integrated gravity and magnetic field technique to obtain integrated gravity and magnetic field result for the China seas and adjacent areas, and then adopts the normalized vertical derivative of the total horizontal derivative technique to conduct partition. Finally,it identifies the relationship between the partition characteristics and tectonics as well as the patterns of petroleum basin occurrence. The research shows that the partition of gravity and magnetic field integrated result has a good correlation with the Neo-Cathaysian tectonic system and tectonic units. The petroleum basins are characterized according to three blocks arranged from north to south and four zones arranged from east to west. The north-south block structure causes the uneven distribution of oil and gas resources in the mainland area and the differences in the hydrocarbon-bearing strata.Petroleum basins are more abundant in the north than in the south. The ages of the main oil-and gas-bearing strata are“Paleozoic–Mesozoic,Paleozoic–Mesozoic–Cenozoic, and Paleozoic–Mesozoic”,in order from north to south. The difference in the overall type of oil and gas resources in all basins is controlled by the east–west zonation. From east to west, the oil and gas resource type exhibits a wave-like pattern of“oil and gas, gas, oil and gas, gas”.The vertical distribution is characterized by an upper oil(Mesozoic–Cenozoic)and lower gas(Mesozoic–Paleozoic)structure.Within the study area, the Paleozoic marine strata should be the main strata of future natural gas exploration. 展开更多

The gravity and magnetic data can be adopted to interpret the internal structure of the Earth. To improve the calculation efficiency during the inversion process and the accuracy and reliability of the reconstructed physical property models, the triple strategy is adopted in this paper to develop a fast cross-gradient joint inversion for gravity and magnetic data. The cross-gradient constraint contains solving the gradients of the physical property models and performing the cross-product calculation of their gradients. The sparse matrices are first obtained by calculating the gradients of the physical property models derived from the first-order finite difference. Then, the triple method is applied to optimize the storages and the calculations related to the gradients of the physical property models. Therefore, the storage compression amount of the calculations related to the gradients of the physical property models and the cross-gradient constraint are reduced to one-fold of the number of grid cells at least, and the compression ratio increases with the increase of the number of grid cells. The test results from the synthetic data and field data prove that the structural coupling is achieved by using the fast cross-gradient joint inversion method to effectively reduce the multiplicity of solutions and improve the computing efficiency. 展开更多

The Zhuxi tungsten deposit in Jiangxi Province,South China, contains a total W reserve of about 2.86 Mt at an average grade of 0.54 wt%WO3,representing the largest W deposit in the world.Numerous studies on the metallogeny of the deposit have included its timing, the ore-controlling structures and sedimentary host rocks and their implications for mineral exploration. However, the deep nappe structural style of Taqian-Fuchun metallogenic belt that hosts the W deposit, and the spatial shape and scale of deeply concealed intrusions and their sedimentary host rocks are still poorly defined, which seriously restricts the discovery of new deposits at depth and in surrounding areas of the W deposit.Modern 3 D geological modeling is an important tool for the exploration of concealed orebodies, especially in brownfield environments. There are obvious density contrast and weak magnetic contrast in the ore-controlling strata and granite at the periphery of the deposit, which lays a physical foundation for solving the 3 D spatial problems of the ore-controlling geological body in the deep part of the study area through gravity and magnetic modeling.Gravity data(1:50000)and aeromagnetic data(1:50000)from the latest geophysical surveys of 2016-2018 have been used, firstly,to carry out a potential field separation to obtain residual anomalies for gravity and magnetic interactive inversion. Then,on the basis of the analysis of the relationship between physical properties and lithology, under the constraints of surface geology and borehole data,human-computer interactive gravity and magnetic inversion for 18 cross-sections were completed. Finally, the 3 D geological model of the Zhuxi tungsten deposit and its periphery have been established through these 18 sections, and the spatial shape of the intrusions and strata with a depth of 5 km underground were obtained, initially realizing―transparency‖for ore-controlling bodies.According the analysis of the geophysical, geochemical, and geological characteristics of the Zhuxi tungsten deposit,we discern three principles for prospecting and prediction in the research area, and propose five new exploration targets in its periphery. 展开更多

The intersection of the Kyushu-Palau Ridge(KPR)and the Central Basin Rift(CBR)of the West Philippine Basin(WPB)is a relic of a trench-trench-rift(TTR)type triple-junction,which preserves some pivotal information on the cessation of the seafloor spreading of the WPB,the emplacement and disintegration of the proto-Izu-Bonin-Mariana(IBM)Arc,and the transition from initial rifting to steady-state spreading of the Parece Vela Basin(PVB).However, the structural characteristics of this triple-junction have not been thoroughly understood. In this paper, using the newly acquired multi-beam bathymetric, gravity, and magnetic data obtained by the Qingdao Institute of Marine Geology,China Geological Survey, the authors depict the topographic, gravity, and magnetic characteristics of the triple-junction and adjacent region.Calculations including the upward continuations and total horizontal derivatives of gravity anomaly are also performed to highlight the major structural features and discontinuities.Based on these works, the morphological and structural features and their formation mechanisms are analyzed. The results show that the last episode amagmatic extension along the CBR led to the formation of a deep rift valley, which extends eastward and incised the KPR.The morphological and structural fabrics of the KPR near and to the south of the triple-junction are consistent with those of the western PVB,manifesting as a series of NNE-SSW-and N-S-trending ridges and troughs, which were produced by the extensional faults associated with the initial rifting of the PVB.The superposition of the above two reasons induced the prominent discontinuity of the KPR in deep and shallow crustal structures between 15°N‒15°30′N and 13°30′N‒14°N.Combined with previous authors’results,we propose that the stress produced by the early spreading of the PVB transmitted westward and promoted the final stage amagmatic extension of the CBR.The eastward propagation of the CBR destroyed the KPR,of which the magmatism had decayed or ceased at that time. The destruction mechanism of the KPR associated with the rifting of the PVB varies along strike the KPR.Adjacent to the triple-junction,the KPR was destroyed mainly due to the oblique intersection of the PVB rifting center.Whereas south of the triple-junction,the KPR was destroyed by the E-W-directional extensional faulting on its whole width. 展开更多

Regional surface gravity data and global satellite magnetic data have been utilized to generate a preliminary model of the crustal structure along a southwest-northeast profile (Gadra-Fatehpur) through western Rajasthan. The study area represents the western part of the Indian continental landmass which has undergone several major episodes of repeated subduction/collision,plume traces and rifting from Archaean to recent times. The temporal and spatial relationship between the various geotectonic provinces is quite complex, thereby limiting the emergence of a suitable crustal structure model for this region.Exposures of the Malani Igneous Suite (MIS),a product of bimodal volcanism (~780 Ma),and considered to be the third largest felsic magmatic province of the world,is evident along the profile and also to the southwest of the study area. The easternmost part of the profile is close to the DAFB (Delhi Aravalli Fold Belt),a Proterozoic orogenic belt. This study probes the geometry of the different crustal units in terms of density and susceptibility variations in order to decipher the imprints of the major tectonic processes the region has undergone. In order to decipher the crustal geometry of the Gadra-Fatehpur profile, two NW-SE gravity and magnetic profile vertical sections (A-A' in the south and B-B' in the north) are modelled on the basis of the constraints provided from previous seismic models. The crustal model of the Gadra-Fatehpur profile is composed of alluvium,Tertiary sediments,MIS,Marwar Supergroup,low-density layers (LDLs) and the middle-lower crustal layers, with a distinct change in configuration from the southwest to northeast. The Moho dips from SW to NE,the MIS in the SW gives way to the thick pile of the Marwar Supergroup to the NE.The evolution of MIS has been suggested to have occurred as a consequence of delamination of the upper mantle.LDLs are incorporated in Gadra-Fatehpur model. In the SW,LDL (2550 kg/m3) lies below the MIS in the NE,another LDL (2604 kg/m3) is depicted below the mid-crustal layer. 展开更多

The southern part of the Kyushu-Palau Ridge(KPR)is located at the conjunction of the West Philippine Basin, the Parece Vela Basin, the Palau Basin, and the Caroline Basin. This area has extremely complex structures and is critical for the research on the tectonic evolution of marginal seas in the Western Pacific Ocean. However, only few studies have been completed on the southern part, and the geophysical fields and deep structures in this part are not well understood.Given this, this study finely depicts the characteristics of the gravity and magnetic anomalies and extracts information on deep structures in the southern part of the KPR based on the gravity and magnetic data obtained from the 11th expedition of the deep-sea geological survey of the Western Pacific Ocean conducted by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey,China Geological Survey using the R/V Haiyangdizhi 6.Furthermore,with the data collected on the water depth, sediment thickness, and multichannel seismic transects as constraints,a 3D density model and Moho depths of the study area were obtained using 3D density inversion. The results are as follows.(1)The gravity and magnetic anomalies in the study area show distinct zoning and segmentation. In detail, the gravity and magnetic anomalies to the south of 11°N of the KPR transition from high-amplitude continuous linear positive anomalies into low-amplitude intermittent linear positive anomalies. In contrast, the gravity and magnetic anomalies to the north of 11°N of the KPR are discontinuous and show alternating positive and negative anomalies. These anomalies can be divided into four sections,of which the separation points correspond well to the locations of deep faults, thus, revealing different field-source attributes and tectonic genesis of the KPR.(2)The Moho depth in the basins in the study area is 6-12 km.The Moho depth in the southern part of KPR show segmentation.Specifically, the depth is 10‒12 km to the north of 11°N,12‒14 km from 9.5°N to 11°N,14-16 km from 8.5°N to 9.5°N,and 16‒25 km in the Palau Islands.(3)The KPR is a remnant intra-oceanic arc with the oceanic-crust basement.which shows noticeably discontinuous from north to south in geological structure and is intersected by NEE-trending lithospheric-scale deep faults. With large and deep faults F3 and F1(the Mindanao fault)as boundaries overall, the southern part of the KPR can be divided into three zones. In detail, the portion to the south of 8.5°N(F3)is a tectonically active zone, the KPR portion between 8.5°N and 11°N is a tectonically active transition zone, and the portion to the north of 11°N is a tectonically inactive zone.(4)The oceanic crust in the KPR is slightly thicker than that in the basins on both sides of the ridge, and it is inferred that the KPR formed from the thickening of the oceanic crust induced by the upwelling of deep magma in the process of rifting of remnant arcs during the Middle Oligocene. In addition,it is inferred that the thick oceanic crust under the Palau Islands is related to the constant upwelling of deep magma induced by the continuous northwestward subduction of the Caroline Plate toward the Palau Trench since the Late Oligocene. This study provides a scientific basis for systematically understanding the crustal attributes, deep structures, and evolution of the KPR. 展开更多

The gravity and magnetic survey lines of about 13,500 km were carried out in the centraland northern parts of the South China Sea from 1977 to 1978. The results obtained showthat the Bouguer gravity and magnetic anomalies have a tendency to increase gradually theirvalues from the northern continental shelf, through the slope, to the central abyssal basin of theSouth China Sea. The change in free-air gravity anomaly values coincides to a certain degreewith the undulation of the sea-bottom topography. The primary factor determining regionalvariation of the Bouguer gravity anomayl values is the Moho depth. The main factor deter-mining the magnetic anomly values is the nature of the basement rock. The high magnetieand Bouguer gravity anomaly values observed in some fault basin areas are inferred to becaused by draping the basic and ultrabasic magma extruding along the faults on the basementof the metamorphic rock,or by intrusion of the same magma into the basement. 展开更多

The distribution of oil and gas resources in the South China Sea and adjacent areas is closely related to the structural pattern that helped to define the controlling effect of deep processes on oil-bearing basins.Igneous rocks can record important information from deep processes.Deep structures such as faults, basin uplift and depression,Cenozoic basement and magnetic basement are all the results of energy exchange within the earth. The study of the relationship between igneous rocks and deep structures is of great significance for the study of the South China Sea.By using the minimum curvature potential field separation technique and the correlation analysis technique of gravitational and magnetic anomalies, the fusion of gravitational and magnetic data reflecting igneous rocks can be obtained, through which the igneous rocks with high susceptibility/high density or high susceptibility/low density can be identified. In this study area, igneous rocks do not develop in the Yinggehai basin,Qiongdongnan basin,Zengmu basin and Brunei-Sabah basin whilst igneous rocks with high susceptibility/high density or high susceptibility/low density are widely-developed in other basins. In undeveloped igneous areas, faults are also undeveloped the Cenozoic thickness is greater, the magnetic basement depth is greater and the Cenozoic thickness is highly positively correlated with the magnetic basement depth. In igneously developed regions, the distribution pattern of the Qiongtai block is mainly controlled by primary faults, while the distribution of the Zhongxisha block,Xunta block and Yongshu-Taiping block is mainly controlled by secondary faults, the Cenozoic thickness having a low correlation with the depth of the magnetic basement. 展开更多

As one of the main controlling factors of oil and gas accumulation, faults are closely related to the distribution of oil and gas reservoirs.Studying how faults control petroliferous basins is particularly important. In this work,we investigated the plane positions of major faults in the China seas and its adjacent areas using the normalized vertical derivative of the total horizontal derivative(NVDR-THDR)of the Bouguer gravity anomaly, the fusion results of gravity and magnetic anomalies, and the residual Bouguer gravity anomaly. The apparent depths of major faults in the China seas and its adjacent areas were inverted using the Tilt-Euler method based on the Bouguer gravity anomaly. The results show that the strikes of the faults in the China seas and its adjacent areas are mainly NE and NW,followed by EW,and near-SN.Among them, the lengths of most ultra-crustal faults are in the range of 1000–3000 km,and their apparent depths lie between 10 km and 40 km.The lengths of crustal faults lie between 300 km and 1000 km,and their apparent depths are between 0 km and 20 km.According to the plane positions and apparent depths of the faults,we put forward the concept of fault influence factor for the first time.Based on this factor, the key areas for oil and gas exploration were found as follows:the east of South North China Basin in the intracontinental rift basins;the southeast region of East China Sea Shelf Basin, the Taixinan and Qiongdongnan basins in the continental margin rift basins;Zhongjiannan Basin in the strike-slip pull-apart basins;the Liyue,Beikang, and the Nanweixi basins in the rifted continental basins. This work provides valuable insights into oil and gas exploration, mineral resource exploration, and deep geological structure research in the China seas and its adjacent areas. 展开更多

The Neogene Terror Rift in the Antarctic Victoria Land Basin(VLB)of the Ross Sea,Antarctica,is composed of the Discovery Graben and the Lee Arch. Many Neogene volcanoes are aligned in the north-south direction in the southern VLB,belonging to the McMurdo Volcanic Group. However, due to multiple glaciations and limited seismic data, the volcanic processes are still unclear in the northern VLB,especially in the Terror Rift.Multichannel seismic profiles were collected at the VLB from the 32nd Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition(CHINARE).We utilized four seismic profiles from the CHINARE and additional historical profiles, along with gravity and magnetic anomalies,to analyze faults and stratigraphic characteristics in the northern Terror Rift and volcanism in the VLB.Negative flower structures found in the northern Terror Rift suggest that the Terror Rift was affected by dextral strike-slip faults extending from the northern Victoria Land(NVL).After the initial orthogonal tension, the rift transited into an oblique extension, forming a set of downward concaving normal faults and accommodation zones in the Terror Rift.On the Lee Arch, several imbricated normal faults formed and converged into a detachment fault.Under gravitational forces, the strata bent upward and formed a rollover anticline. Many deep faults and thin strata subjected to erosion facilitated volcanic activity.A brittle volcanic region in the VLB was affected by dextral strike-slip movements and east-west extension, resulting in two Neogene volcanic chains that connect three igneous provinces in the VLB:the Hallett,Melbourne, and Erebus Provinces. These two chains contain mud volcanoes with magnetic nuclei, volcanic intrusions, and late-stage volcanic eruptions.Volcanisms have brought about opposite polarities of magnetic anomalies in Antarctica, indicating the occurrence of multiple volcanic activities. 展开更多

In Nigeria, the basement complex and the sedimentary basins house many thermal springs which are physical manifestations of geothermal energy. However, there are difficulties in accessing the sustain-ability of these resources due to ethical and security issues as well as limited data in Nigeria. Thus, identifying the precise location, temperature, and energy potential on a large scale has been a major drawback. This paper is the preliminary investigation of geothermal potential in parts of the Middle Benue Trough using satellite imagery, geology, regional gravity, and high-resolution aeromagnetic data.Landsat 8 scene was used to estimate the Land Surface Temperature(LST)in ArcGIS^(TM).Selected sites were classified as very low, low, moderate, and high LST.The intermediate and high classes happen to be possible geothermal zones, and they occupy 49% of the study area(38,077 km^(2)).The Riverline was superimposed on the LST,and the high-temperature sites were located by the identification tool.Streams/river data overlapped on the selected sites were regarded as thermal/warm springs.Remarkably, the LST results show lower temperatures(<36℃)at the famous thermal springs(Awe and Wukari)than some unknown rivers/streams found in Kwande(38℃),Ussa,(38℃),Gwer East(37℃),Yola Cross and Ogoja(36℃).Furthermore,the geophysical datasets, regional gravity, and high-resolution aeromagnetic data were interpolated to delineate the subsurface features associated with geothermal manifestations. The four layers from the LST were further evaluated using the geophysical approach.Gravity and mag-netic values revealed variations that could be linked to geothermal alterations. The correlation of the geophysical anomalies and LST with the geology of the study area uncovers essential information on energy potentials. Therefore, further investigation is required to estimate the depth of the causative body, the geothermal gradients, and the reservoir volumes. 展开更多

In this paper, we introduce the method of Wavelet Multi-scale Decomposition (WMD) combined with Power Spectrum Analysis (PSA) for the separation of regional gravity and magnetic anomalies. The Songliao Basin is situated between the Siberian Plate and the North China Plate, and its main structural trend of gravity and magnetic anomaly fields is NNE. The study area shows a significant feature of deep collage-type construction. According to the feature of gravity field, the region was divided into five sub-regions. The gravity and magnetic fields of the Songliao Basin were separated using WMD with a 4th order separation. The apparent depth of anomalies in each order was determined by Logarithmic PSA. Then, the shallow high-frequency anomalies were removed and the 2nd-4th order wavelet detail anomalies were used to study the basin's major faults. Twenty-six faults within the basement were recognized. The 4th order wavelet approximate anomalies were used for the inversion of the Moho discontinuity and the Curie isothermal surface. 展开更多

The Xuhuai fold thrust belt(XHTB)is a curved structure in the southeastern margin of the North China Craton(NCC)that has attracted great attentions due to its tectonic and petrological characteristics. However, few geophysical studies have focused on the deep structure of this belt.In this study,we carry out a systematic demonstration of the main geophysical features that characterize the XHTB and surrounding areas. The results reveal small negative gravity and magnetic anomalies, thin crust and lithosphere, lower shear velocity and shallower earthquake epicenters relative to other areas of the NCC,collectively indicating a lithospheric-scale rheological anomaly at this belt. The magnetic alignments show a trend similar to that of geological units in southeastern NCC and adjacent areas, although they differ from the SKS-splitting fast polarization directions, except in the Qinling-Dabie orogen where a vertical coherent deformation of the crust and mantle may be involved there.Based on the geophysical data,we propose a detachment-controlled model, which was caused by the different detachment depth/strength,for the formation of XHTB to explain its arcuate shape as well as the magnetic alignments, thus providing new insight into the deep processes of southeastern NCC. 展开更多
