Growth and yield models were developed for individual tress and stands based on 336 temporary plots with 405 stem analysis trees of dahurian larch ( Larix gmelinii( Rupr. )Rupr.) plantations throughout Daxing'anling mountains. Several equations were selected using nonlinear regression analysis. Results showed that the Richards equation was the best model for estimating tree height, stand mean height and stand dominant height from age; The Power equation was the best model for prediction tree volume from DBH and tree height; The logarithmic stand volume equation was good for predicting stand volume from age, mean height, basal area and other stand variables. These models can be used to construct the volume table, the site index table and other forestry tables for dahurian larch plantations. 展开更多

Understanding physiological responses in saline agriculture may facilitate wheat breeding programs.Based on a screening test, the Ningmai-14(NM-14)and Yangmai-23(YM-23)wheat cultivars were selected for further experiments to understand the underlying salinity tolerance mechanism. This study investigated the effects of five salinity levels such as Control(CK)=0(without NaCl stress),S1=0.20%,S2=0.25%,S3=0.30%and S4=0.35%of NaCl concentrations of soil on wheat plants. The results showed that increased salinity concentration reduced the growth and yield of wheat cultivars(NM-14 and YM-23).However,YM-23(12.7%)yielded more than NM-14 at maximum salinity stress. The higher salinity(S4)increased the concentration of Na^(+)(4.3 to 5.8-fold)and P contents(2.5 to 2.2-fold),while reducing the average concentrations of K^(+),Cu,and K^(+)/Na^(+)ratio.The higher salinity(S4)reduced the spikelet length by 21.35%(followed by grain spike−1),and the starch content by 18.81%.In the YM-23 cultivar, higher salinity increased superoxide dismutase(SOD),total antioxidant capacity(TAC),and amylase.Compared to NM-14,induced expression of TaYUC2,6,and TaGA13ox,20ox genes were recorded in YM-23.Similarly,in YM-23 the stress-specific genes such as TaHSP70,90 were enhanced whereas,TaSOS1,2 were suppressed.Overall, our study revealed that salt tolerant cultivars modulate hormonal and antioxidant activities, thus maintaining high growth. 展开更多

This study was carried out to find out how dependent are two local rice varieties (Magitolngar and Tox-728-1) to inoculation with selected endogenous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in a field where they were isolated. The multi-indigenous endomycorrhiza spores previously isolated and identified were the active ingredient in the production of bioinoculants used for this purpose. Spores massively multiplied from the rhizosphere of each rice variety in each of the four locally collected soils substrates were harvested to constitute 08 AMF inoculants (Kema = T1;Lama = T2;Latox = T3;Ndjatox = T4;Koloma = T5;Kolotox = T6;Ndjama = T7;Ketox = T8). These inoculants were field tested on the two rice varieties at Kelo, under a complete randomized block design, comprising 10 treatments (8 inoculants, 01 positive control = T9, 01 negative control = T10), each of which was repeated thrice. The analysis of data indicates that AMF-inoculated plants were taller, developed more tillers/plant, and produced more rice grains/panicle than non-AMF-inoculated plants for both studied rice varieties. The rice variety Madjitolngar yielded more grains (7.5 t/ha) than the Tox-728-1 variety (5.8 t/ha). Moreover, inoculants Koloma (T1), Latox (T3) and Kolotox (T6) on the one hand, Koloma (T1) and Ketox (T8) on the other hand, were best suited for the improvement of growth and yield of the rice varieties Madjitolngar and Tox-728-1 respectively, tested under field conditions at Kelo. In this study, the two rice varieties have shown a dependency to endomycorrhizal symbiosis at Kelo, and therefore, an industrial-scale production of efficient endomycorrhal inoculants is necessary to sustainably boost the productivity of this important crop in Chad. 展开更多

The impact of low-quality irrigation water on plant development has garnered significant attention from researchers. In light of this, two field experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance, yield, oil production and composition, as well as active constituents of Rocket(Eruca sativa Mill) cultivated in calcareous soil under saline water irrigation. Foliar sprays containing condensed molasses soluble(CMS), zinc(Zn), and boron(B) alone or in combination were used for irrigation. The data obtained from measuring various parameters of Rocket following foliar spraying with CMS, Zn, B or their combinations demonstrated that most treatments resulted in a significant increase in these parameters. The highest values for most measurements were observed when foliar application included all three components(CMS + Zn + B), resulting in a seed yield of 184.6 g/m2and an oil content of 675.3 kg/ha. Compared to the control group, the macronutrient content of N, P, K, Mg, and Ca increased by 34.4%, 56%, 42%, 45%, and 39% respectively in the seeds treated with these components.Furthermore, carbohydrates, proteins, phenolics flavonoids, and antioxidants showed increases of 24%, 34%,21%, 43%, and 28% respectively compared to the control group. Gas-liquid chromatography analysis identified ten components present in the seed oil characterized by higher unsaturated fatty acids ranging from 81.28% to92.28% and lower saturated fatty acids ranging from 6.72% to 8.21%. Therefore, foliar spray application including CMS, zinc, and boron can help alleviate salinity effects on Rocket plants grown under saline water irrigation conditions while improving growth, yield, oil production, and nutritional content such as total carbohydrates, proteins, and macronutrients levels. 展开更多

Forest management planning often relies on Airborne Laser Scanning(ALS)-based Forest Management Inventories(FMIs)for sustainable and efficient decision-making.Employing the area-based(ABA)approach,these inventories estimate forest characteristics for grid cell areas(pixels),which are then usually summarized at the stand level.Using the ALS-based high-resolution Norwegian Forest Resource Maps(16 m×16 m pixel resolution)alongside with stand-level growth and yield models, this study explores the impact of three levels of pixel aggregation(standlevel,stand-level with species strata, and pixel-level)on projected stand development. The results indicate significant differences in the projected outputs based on the aggregation level.Notably, the most substantial difference in estimated volume occurred between stand-level and pixel-level aggregation, ranging from-301 to+253 m^(3)·ha^(-1)for single stands. The differences were,on average, higher for broadleaves than for spruce and pine dominated stands, and for mixed stands and stands with higher variability than for pure and homogenous stands. In conclusion, this research underscores the critical role of input data resolution in forest planning and management, emphasizing the need for improved data collection practices to ensure sustainable forest management. 展开更多

Accurate and efficient estimation of forest growth and live biomass is a critical element in assessing potential responses to forest management and environmental change. The objective of this study was to develop models to predict longleaf pine tree diameter at breast height (dbh) and merchantable stem volume (V) using data obtained from field measurements. We used longleaf pine tree data from 3,376 planted trees on 127 permanent plots located in the U.S. Gulf Coastal Plain region to fit equations to predict dbh and V as functions of tree height (H) and crown area (CA). Prediction of dbh as a function of H improved when CA was added as an additional independent variable. Similarly, predic- tions of V based on H improved when CA was included. Incorporation of additional stand variables such as age, site index, dominant height, and stand density were also evaluated but resulted in only small improvements in model performance. For model testing we used data from planted and naturally-regenerated trees located inside and outside the geographic area used for model fitting. Our results suggest that the models are a robust alternative for dbh and V estimations when H and CA are known on planted stands with potential for naturally-regenerated stands, across a wide range of ages. We discuss the importance of these models for use with metrics derived from remote sensing data. 展开更多

Douglas-fir(Pseudotsuga menziesii(Mirb.)Franco),one of the most commercially important tree species in western North America and one of the most valuable timber trees worldwide, was introduced to Europe in 1827.It became a major species for aff orestation in Western Europe after WWII,currently grows in 35 countries on over 0.83 million ha and is one of the most widespread nonnative tree species across the continent.A lower sensitivity to drought makes Douglas-fi r a potential alternative to the more drought-sensitive Norway spruce so its importance in Europe is expected to increase in the future. It is one of the fastest growing conifer species cultivated in Europe, with the largest reported dimensions of 2.3 m in diameter and 67.5 m in height.Pure stands have high productivity(up to 20 m 3 ha−1 a−1)and production(over 1000 m 3 ha−1).The species is generally regenerated by planting(initial stocking density from less than 1000 seedlings ha−1 to more than 4000 ha−1),using seedlings of European provenance derived from seed orchards or certifi ed seed stands. As the range of end-uses of its wood is very wide, the rotation period of Douglas-fi r is highly variable and ranges between 40 and 120 years. When the production of large-sized,knotfree timber is targeted, thinnings are always coupled with pruning up to 6 m.There is an increasing interest in growing Douglas-fi r in mixtures and managing stands through close-to-nature silviculture, but the species’intermediate shade tolerance means that it is best managed through group selection or shelterwood systems. 展开更多

Background: Distance-dependent individual-tree models have commonly been found to add little predictive power to that of distance-independent ones. One possible reason is plasticity, the ability of trees to lean and to alter crown and root development to better occupy available growing space. Being able to redeploy foliage (and roots) into canopy gaps and less contested areas can diminish the importance of stem ground locations. Methods: Plasticity was simulated for 3 intensively measured forest stands, to see to what extent and under what conditions the allocation of resources (e.g., light) to the individual trees depended on their ground coordinates. The data came from 50 x 60 m stem-mapped plots in natural monospecific stands of jack pine, trembling aspen and black spruce from central Canada. Explicit perfect-plasticity equations were derived for tessellation-type models. Results: Qualitatively similar simulation results were obtained under a variety of modelling assumptions. The effects of plasticity varied somewhat with stand uniformity and with assumed plasticity limits and other factors. Stand-level implications for canopy depth, distribution modelling and total productivity were examined. Conclusions: Generally, under what seem like conservative maximum plasticity constraints, spatial structure accounted for less than 10% of the variance in resource allocation. The perfect-plasticity equations approximated well the simulation results from tessellation models, but not those from models with less extreme competition asymmetry Whole-stand perfect plasticity approximations seem an attractive alternative to individual-tree models. 展开更多
