Grammatical and Lexical Errors in Students' English Composition Writing: The Case of Three Senior High Schools (SHS) in the Central Region of Ghana 被引量:1

This is a qualitative study aimed at finding the lexical and grammatical errors students of three Senior High Schoolsin the Central Region of Ghana commit in their essay writing. The study also sought to examine the frequency ofthe errors and what can be done to improve the teaching of L2 (English) writing in the Senior High School. Thestudy used a corpus of essay writings of 150 second year students. The schools and the participants werepurposively selected. The data were analyzed using the content analysis approach. The study identified that thelexical errors in the students' writing were due to homophone problems and semantic lexical errors. Thegrammatical errors identified were agreement errors, tense errors, singular-plural (number) errors, prepositionalerrors, and article errors. The study also found that the most frequently committed grammatical error was tenseerrors followed by agreement errors. The implications of these findings to the teaching of English writing are thatteachers where possible should have understanding of both the L1 and L2 of the students and teachers shouldexplicitly teach for transfer, have adequate knowledge of how to identify students' writing errors, and use effectiveteaching strategies to improve students' English writing. Additionally, teachers should serve as models of usingappropriate English for students to emulate and also create a conducive classroom environment for students toparticipate in class activities. The primary concern of this paper is to address the issue of discrepancies between teachers intuitively defined stronger and weaker student argumentative writings.There exists a problem in Chinese university EFL writing classrooms that the teachers'remarks on student compositions are often found to be rather vague or even unhelpful.Remarks such as Needs further amendment and You wrote just like the way you speak cannot supply students with explicit reasons of what is really needed for their writing improvement.Affirming the dialectal view on text-context relationship held by Systemic Functional Grammar(SFG),the theoretical propositions of Rich Feature Analysis(Barton,2004) are contended to a sound solution to the problem proposed by this paper.To demonstrate its feasibility,the paper followed the gist of Rich Feature Analysis to analyze a corpus of four argumentative writings on same topics.The paper consolidates "the spoken-written continuum"(Barton,2004,p.64),and concludes stronger argumentative writings should own at least one of the following properties: product-like,condensed,recursive,coherent,distanced,and open to scrutiny.The absence of lexical density and nominalization constitutes the main reason for writing deficiencies by tertiary students.The implications for learning the register of schooling are discussed. 展开更多

Based on Winter's and Hoey's theories on discourse analysis, the Problem-Solution Pattern in cosmetic advertising from the perspective of text patterns and lexical signaling is discussed by analyzing thirty pieces of advertisements on cosmetic products. Findings suggest text patterns of cosmetic advertisements display in various forms and the components of Problem-Solution Pattern are signaled by lexical items as emotive vocabulary with positive or negative meanings and repetition of the brand names. Possible implications are offered for cosmetic advertising industry in writing effective advertisements both in English and Chinese. 展开更多

使用CiteSpace 5.7.R5,对1998−2022年国内外核心期刊中的二语语块研究论文进行知识图谱分析,以厘清核心主题和研究前沿,对比国内外研究的异同,并分析未来发展趋势。研究发现,国内外二语语块研究呈现多领域、跨学科、稳步发展的特点,并... 使用CiteSpace 5.7.R5,对1998−2022年国内外核心期刊中的二语语块研究论文进行知识图谱分析,以厘清核心主题和研究前沿,对比国内外研究的异同,并分析未来发展趋势。研究发现,国内外二语语块研究呈现多领域、跨学科、稳步发展的特点,并以二语习得与教学为主要聚焦点,近年来具有语料库分析法占主导地位的研究趋势。国内外区别在于:国外研究热点层层递进、推陈出新,更注重对学习者个体差异、辞典编纂和文本标注与分类以及语块的心理表征与加工优势的探讨,且计算语言学、心理语言学以及神经语言学相结合的研究范式呈上升趋势;国内研究热点相对孤立、缺乏传承性,仍停留于探索语块的使用特征和测量学习者语块水平的阶段。建议国内研究者进一步开展针对二语语块研究的跨学科交叉验证,以增加二语语块研究的广度和深度。 展开更多

以某高职英语专业普高、职高生源各一个班级学生为研究对象,以前后两次限时有效英语书面作文语料自建语料库。采用错误分析理论,对作文中词形、词汇及句法错误进行共时与历时比较分析,试图发现产生的变化规律。研究表明,两类研究对象英... 以某高职英语专业普高、职高生源各一个班级学生为研究对象,以前后两次限时有效英语书面作文语料自建语料库。采用错误分析理论,对作文中词形、词汇及句法错误进行共时与历时比较分析,试图发现产生的变化规律。研究表明,两类研究对象英语书面语作文改善和句法错误变化统计显著,书面作文成绩、词汇及句法错误差异显著。初次英语书面作文成绩与词形、词汇、句法错误均显著负相关;后次作文中普高班学生的成绩与句法错误中等负相关,职高班学生作文成绩与词汇及句法错误显著负相关。研究结果为深入研究中国中低英语水平学习者书面写作动态发展特征、能力提升途径及写作教学实践提供了有益启示。 展开更多
