CLINICAL OBSERVATION ON THE TREATMENT OF LUMBAR VERTEBRA HYPEROSTEOGENY WITH ELECTRO- AND HYDRO-ACUPUNCTURE

In the present study, 121 patients with lumbar vertebra hyperosteogeny were dividedinto following four groups for treatment and comparison: intense electro-acupuncture group (Group1), hydro-acupuncture group (Group 2), electro-acupuncture plus hydro-acupuncture group (Group3) and analgesic liquid for spur group (Group 4). It is indicated that the effect of electro-acupunctureplus hydro-acupuncture is the best in the treatment of lumbar vertebra hyperosteogeny.

Observation on Therapeutic Effect of Facial Paralysis Treated with Electroacupuncture plus Hydro-acupuncture

Objective： To observe the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture on Jiaozheng （Extra） plus hydro-acupuncture in treating facial paralysis, and to explore a better acupuncture therapy for treating facial paralysis. Methods： One hundred and nineteen cases with peripheral facial paralysis were randomly allocated into an observation group （60 cases） and a control group （59 cases） by the visiting sequence. The cases in the observation group were treated with electroacupuncture on Jiaozheng （Extra） plus hydro-acupuncture, and the cases in the control group were treated with normal acupuncture. The treatment was conducted once a day and 7 times as a course, with 1-2 d interval. Evaluation were done after 6 courses. Results： Comparing the cure and marked efficacy rate, observation group was much better than control group, and there was statistical difference （P〈0.05）; after 14-day treatment, the cure and marked efficacy rate of the observation group and the control group was 78.3% and 49.2%, respectively; after 21-day treatment, the cure and marked efficacy rate of the observation group and the control group was 88.3% and 67.8%, respectively. There was significant difference between the two groups （P〈0.01）. Conclusion： The therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture mainly on Jiaozheng （Extra） plus hydro-acupuncture in treating facial paralysis was better and with shorter courses.

Clinical Research on Tuina plus Hydro-acupuncture for Lumbar Intervertebral Disc Herniation

Objective： To observe the clinical effects of mina plus hydro-acupuncture on lumbar intervertebral disc herniation. Methods： One hundred and twenty cases of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group. Patients in the observation group were treated with tuina plus hydro-acupuncture, and the control group with tuina. Results： The total effective rate was 93.3% and 75.0% respectively in the observation group and the control group, with a significant difference （P〈0.01）. Conclusion： Tuina plus hydro-acupuncture has better effects than tuina on the lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.

Clinical Observation on the Treatment of Lumbar Disk Herniation with Hydro-acupuncture plus Tuina

Objective： To observe the therapeutic effect of the treatment of lumbar disk herniation with hydro-acupuncture in combination with tuina. Methods： 380 patients were randomized into two groups, 290 in the treatment group receiving hydro-acupuncture together with tuina therapy, and 60 in the control group receiving acupuncture therapy plus pharmacotherapy. The therapeutic results were evaluated at the end of the third treatment session. Results： The total effective rate of the treatment group was 95.5%, and that of the control group was 57.8%, and the difference was statistically significant （P〈0.01）. Conclusion： Lumbar disk herniation responds well to the treatment of combined hydro-acupuncture and tuina therapy.

Clinical Observation of Anxiety after Earthquake by Acupuncture and Hydro-acupuncture

Objective： To observe the clinical effect of acupuncture and hydro-acupuncture in treating anxiety. Methods： Compare between the therapeutic effect of 186 cases of Three Huang Points of DONG＇s extra points in treating anxiety and that of 139 cases by purely Western medicine buspirone. Results： The total effective rate of the treatment group was 91.4%, and the rate of the control group was 93.5%. There was statistical difference of Hamilton Anxiety Scale （HAMA） and Self Rating Anxiety Scale （SAS） scores before and after treatment in both groups （P 〈 0.001）, while there was no statistical difference between the two groups （P〉0.05）. Conclusion： Acupuncture treatment compared favorably to anti-anxiety drug buspirone. Oral administration of buspirone had different degrees of side effects, .such as dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, difficulty urinating and acidophilus, while there was basically no side effects of acupuncture and the effect of acupuncture was better than buspirone. This was especially suitable for patients who could not take medications for various reasons.

Clinical observation on electroacupuncture plus hydro-acupuncture for low back pain caused by compression fractures

Objective： To observe the effect of electroacupuncture （EA） at Jiaji （EX-B 2） points plus hydro-acupuncture with sinomenine hydrochloride for low back pain caused by compression fractures in the elderly. Methods： Ninety-five elderly in-patients with low back pain caused by compression fractures were randomly divided into an observation group and an EA group according to the visit sequence. Both groups received the same basic treatment. In the EA group, 48 cases were treated with EA at Jiaji （EX-B 2） points plus the basic therapy; 47 cases in the observation group received the basic treatment plus EA and hydro-acupuncture with sinomenine hydrochloride at Jiaji （EX-B 2） points. The levels of osteoprotegerin （OPG） and interleukin-1β（IL-1β） in peripheral blood were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （ELISA） before and at the 21st day of treatment in both groups. Oswestry disability index （ODI） and visual analog scale （VAS） scores were used to analyze the clinical efficacy. Results： After treatment, the OPG content in the observation group was higher with statistical significance compared with that before treatment in the observation group and after the treatment in the EA group, respectively （both P〈0.05）; the content of IL-1β, ODI and VAS scores were lower than those before treatment in the observation group and after treatment in the EA group with statistical significances （all P〈0.05）. Conclusion： The combination of EA and hydro-acupuncture with sinomenine hydrochloride at Jiaji （EX-B 2） points is effective for low back pain caused by compression fractures in the elderly, and is superior to EA at Jiaji （EX-B 2） points alone.

Observation on Therapeutic Effect of Hydro-acupuncture in the Treatment of Cervical Headache

Clinical Study on Hydro-acupuncture for Hypomenorrhea

Objective： To observe the curative effect of hydro-acupuncture for treatment of hypomenorrhea. Methods ： A total of 72 cases of hypomenorrhea were randomly allocated into an observation group and a control group, with 36 cases in each group. Hydro-acupuncture was used in the observation group and acupuncture treatment in the control group. Menstrual blood volume （MBV） was observed in each phase of treatment in the two groups and the curative effects in the two groups were analyzed and compared. Results： After 3 months of treatment, the total effective rate in the observation group was 100.0% and 91.7% in the control group. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant （P〈0.05）. In the course of treatment, 1 month and 2 months after treatment, the observation group results were superior to those in the control group （P〈0.01; P〈0.05） in the improvement of MBV. Conclusion： Both hydro-acupuncture and acupuncture are effective methods for treatment of hypomenorrheal, and hydro-acupuncture is not only faster in its effect but superior to acupuncture treatment in overall efficacy.

Treatment of 36 Cases of Epistaxis with Hydro-acupuncture at Ear Points

CLINICAL ANALYSIS ON TREATMENT OF 40 CASES OF HYPERLIPEMIA WITH POINT-INJECTION OF RADIX SALVIAE MILTIORRZHIZAE INJECTION

In the present paper, the effect of point-injection of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae injectio on blood-lipid was observed in 65 cases of hyperlipemia. The 65 patients were divided into point-injection group (40 cases who were treated with point-injection of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae injectio and oral administration of Shujiangzhi) and control group (25 cases who were treated with oral administration of Shujiangzhi only). Results showed that the total effective rate of the point-injection group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0. 05); point-injection of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae injectio could effectively raise the level of HDL-C, decrease lower LDL-C and regulate estrogen level of women. The slow releasing action of red sage root solution in the topical acupoint region prolonged and enhanced its effect in lowering blood-lipid. There was a significant difference between the two groups in the effect of lowering blood-fat (P< 0. 01).

CLINICAL OBSERVATION ON 138 CASES OF SEVERE HICCUP TREATED BY ACU-MOXIBUSTION

Severe hiccup was treated by auriculo-acupuncture plus moxa cone moxibustion,with hydro-acupuncture when the patient was very feeble. The second group was treated by auriculo-acupuncture with gentle moxibustion and the third one, with warm-needling moxibustion. Compari-son made in 138 cases revealed that the first group was very satisfactory, the cured rate being 100%,that of the 2nd and 3rd groups were 91. 3% and 82. 35% respectively. Statistical treatment revealedP【0.05 with significant difference between the first and second groups, P value between the firstand third groups was P【0.01, with very significant difference. There was no significant differencebetween the 2nd and 3rd groups, P】0.05.

Observation on therapeutic effect of knee osteoarthritis treated with electroacupuncture and acupoint injection

Objective To observe the clinical therapeutic effect of knee osteoarthritis treated with electroacupuncture and acupoint injection. Methods Eighty-two cases were randomly divided into observation group and control group, 41 cases in each group. In observation group, electroacupuncture and Danggui （当归 Angelica Sinensis） injection therapy were applied, Dúbí（犊鼻 ST 35）, Nèixīyǎn（内膝 眼 EX-LE 4）, Liángqiū（梁丘 ST 34）, etc. were applied for electroacupuncture, and Liángqiū（梁丘 ST 34）, Xuèhǎi（血海 SP 10）, Yánglíngquán（阳陵泉 GB 34）, etc. were applied for acupoint injection. In control group, electroacupuncture therapy （same as that in observation group） was applied. After two courses treatment, knee function scale and clinical curative effects were compared. Results The improvements of scores of joint pain, range of activity, independent flexion-extension, walking ability, activities of daily living and total scores in two groups after treatment were more signif icant than those before treatment （all P0.05）, and the scores in observation group were superior to those in control group（all P0.05）. The total effective rate was 92.7% （38/41） in observation group, which was obviously superior to that of 73.2%（30/41） in control group （P0.05）. Conclusion The clinical therapeutic effect of knee osteoarthritis treated by electroacupuncture combined with acupoint injection is favorable, and superior to that by electroacupuncture therapy only.

Intractable post-herpetic neuralgia in the trunk treated with point injection at Jiájǐ(夹脊 EX-B 2)

ABSTRACT Objective To compare the efficacy difference between point injection at Jiiaji （夹脊 EX-B 2） and oral medication in the treatment of intractable post-herpetic neuralgia （PHN） in the trunk. Methods One hundred and thirty cases were randomly divided into an point injection group and an medication group, 65 cases in each one. In point injection group, according to the invasion site of herpes zoster, Jiiaji （夹脊 EX-B 2） of corresponding segments and the meridian points on skin lesion areas, such as Fengchi （风池GB 20）, Tianzhu （天柱 BL 10）, Feishu （肺俞 BL 13） and Geguan （膈关 BL 46） were selected and injected with the mixed solution of compound Betamethasone （administered only in the first injection）, Vitamin B12 and Lidoeaine Carbonate, 2 mL on each point, once per day. In medication group, Diclofenac Sodium sustained release tablets, 75 mg were administered, twice per day. The clinical efficacy was compared 10 days later between two groups. Results The total effective rate in point injection group was 100.0% （65/65）, which was better than 66.1% （43/65） in medication group （P〈0.01）. Conclusion Point injection mainly at Jiiaji （夹脊 EX-B 2） is effective significantly on intractable PHN in the trunk, which is superior to Diclofenac Sodium sustained release tablets.

Effect of acupoint injection with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells on the blood flow in rats with hind limb ischemia

Objective To find out the best injection method of the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells （BM-MSCs） transplantation in the treatment of a rat model with hind limb arterial ischemia. Methods Twenty-four SD rats were randomly divided into four groups： normal control group, model group, BM-MSCs acupoint injection group （Al group） and BM-MSCs muscular injection group （Ml group）. Acupoints of ＂Sanyinjiao＂（三阴交 SP 6） , ＂ Housanli＂ （后三里 ST 36）, ＂Zhaohai＂ （照海 Kl 6）, ＂Huantiao＂ （环跳 GB 30） and ＂Yanglingquan＂ （阳陵泉 GB 34） were selected for Al group, and five nonacupoints were selected on gastrocnemius and adductor of ischemic hind limbs in the Ml group. BMMSCs were injected to the latter two groups. The ischemic hind limb rat model was established using the method of blocking the femoral artery and its branches. The changes of blood flow （perfuse unit, PU） in the affected hind limb and the healthy hind limb were consecutively monitored with laser Doppler flowmetery. The PU index （PUI, the PU ratio of the affected hind limb to the healthy hind limb blood perfusion to describe the visual increment of the blood flow. Besides, the levels of vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） and basic fibroblast growth factor （bFGF） were detected, and the expressions of VEGF and bFGF were observed by immunohistochemical semiquantitative analysis. Results Compared with the model group and the Ml group, the PUI was significantly higher in the Al group on the 3^rd, 14^th and 21^st day after injection of BM-MSCs （P〈0.05, P〈0.01）. Compared with the model group, the serum VEGF, bFGF levels and the immunohistochemical expressions of VEGF and bFGF in the Al and Ml groups were significantly increased （all P〈0.01）. Conclusion After injection of BM-MSCs through the acupoint, the recovery speed of perfusion in the ischemic rat hind limbs was fast. Compared with the muscular injection, it can significantly improve the blood flow in the ischemic rat hind limbs.

Effect of ear acupuncture plus injection at Zusanli(ST 36) on shoulder pain and cytokines after gynecologic laparoscopic surgery

Objective： To explore the clinical efficacy of ear acupuncture plus injection at Zusanli（ST 36） in treating shoulder pain after laparoscopic gynecological surgery, and to observe its effect on cytokines.Methods： Two hundred patients with shoulder pain after laparoscopic gynecological surgery were randomized into two groups based on their visiting sequence, 100 cases each. The observation group was intervened by ear acupuncture plus injection at Zusanli（ST 36）, and the control group was intervened by oral administration of Ibuprofen, 10 d as a treatment course. The clinical efficacies of the two groups were compared after 2 treatment courses; the visual analogue scale（VAS）,present pain intensity（PPI） and 36-item short-form health survey（SF-36） were measured before and after the treatment;the changes of interleukin（IL）-6 and IL-10 after the treatment were also observed.Results： The VAS and PPI scores were significantly changed after the treatment in both groups（both P〈0.01）. After the treatment, the VAS score in the observation group was significantly different from that in the control group（P〈0.05）. The component scores of SF-36 were significantly changed after the treatment in both groups（P〈0.01）; after the treatment, the scores of physical functioning（PF）, bodily pain（BP）, social functioning（SF）, and mental health（MH） in the observation group were significantly different from those in the control group（all P〈0.05）. The contents of IL-6 and IL-10 dropped significantly after the intervention in both groups（both P〈0.01）, and the between-group differences were also statistically significant（both P〈0.01）. The total effective rate of the observation group was higher than that of the control group（P〈0.05）.Conclusion： Ear acupuncture plus injection at Zusanli（ST 36） can significantly improve the shoulder pain after laparoscopic gynecological surgery, down-regulate the expressions of IL-6 and IL-10, and boost the recovery.

Introduction to HUA Xue-gui's Experience in Acupuncture Treatment of Tinnitus and Deafness

Doctor HUA Xue-gui, an associate chief physician in Shanghai Research Institute of Acupuncture and Meridian, has been engaged in clinical practice and scientific research of acupuncture for over 30 years. She has created a set of unique and complete acupuncture modalities for neurotic tinnitus and deafness. The authors are honored to have studied with Doctor HUA and have achieved a lot. Effects of Moxibustion Therapy on Preventing and Treating Side Effects from Chemotherapy of Malignant Tumor Patients

Objective： To observe the clinical effects of moxibustion therapy on preventing and treating toxic and side effects of chemotherapy in malignant tumor patients. Methods： A total of 63 cases were randomly divided into three groups. Twenty-three cases in the moxibustion group were treated by moxibustion, and 22 cases in the hydro-acupuncture group were treated by acupoint injection, and 18 cases in the control group were treated by oral administration of Batilol tablets. The changes of the white blood cell count and the content of immunoglobulin before and after the treatments were observed. Results： After treatments, the total leukocyte count and the content of immunoglobulin were all elevated in the moxibustion group and the hydro-acupuncture group, with statistical difference when compared with the control group （P〈0.05, P〈0.01）. In the elevation of the white blood cell count, the hydro-acupuncture group was better than the moxibustion group （P〈0.05）. Conclusion： Moxibustion and hydro-acupuncture can be used to treat and prevent toxic and side effects of chemotherapy. From this aspect, the different needling techniques possess different effects.

Treatment of 30 Cases of Post-herpetic Neuralgia by Acupuncture Combined with Point Injection

Objective： To observe the effect of acupuncture around the diseased region combined with point injection on post-herpetic neuralgia. Methods： Point injection on 30 cases in the related segments of spinal cord after needling around the diseased region. Results： Twenty-seven cases got effect and the total effect rate was 90%. Conclusion： Acupuncture combined with point injection has remarkable curative effect on post-herpetic neuralgia.

Observation on therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture plus acupoint-injection for nerve root sciatica

Objective：To observe the clinical effects of electroacupuncture （EA） plus acuoint-injection for nerve root sciatica. 〈br〉 Methods：A total of 114 cases were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, 57 cases in each group. The observation group was given EA plus acupoint-injection therapy with Cobamamide. The control group was given oral administration of Diclofenac Sodium Sustained-release Tablets plus muscular injection of Cobamamide. After one-course treatment, the clinical effects were compared between the two groups. 〈br〉 Results：The total effective rate was 96.5%in the observation group and 91.2%in the control group, without a statistical significance in the difference between the two groups （P〉0.05）. The curative rate was 57.9%in the observation group and 21.1% in the control group, with a statistical significance in the difference between the two groups （P〈0.05）. In the follow-up on the fourth day after the treatment, the recurrence rate was 23.1%in the observation group and 47.9%in the control group, with statistical difference between the two groups （P〈0.05）. 〈br〉 Conclusion： EA plus acupoint-injection therapy for sciatica of nerve roots is remarkable in the clinical effect and needs promotion in clinic.

Clinical Study on Acupoint Injection for Primary Osteoporosis

Objective:To observe the therapeutic efficacy of acupoint injection in treating primary osteoporosis. Methods:A hundred and fourteen eligible subjects were randomized at 2:1 into two groups. Seventy-six subjects in the observation group were intervened by acupoint injection, and 38 subjects in the control group were intervened by oral medication. Symptom and signs scores were observed before and after treatment. A two-year follow-up study was conducted to compare the long-term therapeutic efficacy between the two groups. Results:The recovery and markedly effective rate was 68.4% in the observation group versus 47.4% in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). During the 2-year follow up study, 5 subjects in the observation group and 8 in the control group had new fracture, occupying 6.6% and 21.1% respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion:In treating primary osteoporosis, acupoint injection has better short and long term therapeutic efficacies compared to oral medication, and it's convenient with high security evaluation.
