Methods: A total of 68 cases of facial paralysis were treated by integration of acupunct ure-moxibustion and herbal therapies. For acu-moxibustion, Yifeng (翳风 TE 17) , Dicang (地仓 ST 4), Jiache (颊车 ST 6), Yangbai (阳白 GB 14), Hegu (合谷 LI 4), etc. were used. In addition, for facial palsy patients with wind-phlegm blockin g meridian-collaterals and wind-stirring due to yin defi ciency types in the acute stage, Modified Qian Zheng San (牵正散 Powder for Treating Wry-mouth) and Modi f ied Zhen Gan Xi Feng Tang (镇肝熄风汤 Tranquilizing Liver-wind Decoction) were u sed respectively; and for those in convalescent stage and sequela stage, Modifie d Danggui Bu Xue Tang (当归补血汤 Ghinese Angelica Decoction for Replenishing Bl ood) + Qian Zheng San (Powder for Treating Wry-mouth) and Modified Bu Yang Hu an Wu Tang (补阳还五汤 Decoction Invigorating Yang for Recuperation) were employed. Results: After the treatment, the curative rate of the 68 cases a ccounted for 90 % of the total cases, the remarkably effective 6%, the improved 3% and the poor 1% respectively. Conclusion: The therapeutic effectiveness of the integrated tre atment of acupuncture-moxibustion and herbal therapies for facial paralysis is certain.展开更多

It may occur due to accidental consumption of aconite tubers or when it is used in medicinal preparations. In this case report we describe a case of aconite poisoning in a primary case of anxiety disorder, after use of herbal medicine. He gave history of consumption of herbal remedy with honey from folk medicine with unknown content. Our patient presented with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, numbness and dizziness that are common symptoms of aconite poisoning. The management was mainly supportive care depending on the symptoms. Our patient recovered after 30 hours, probably due to slow elimination of the metabolites overtime. Our case represents one case where poisoning was not due to wrong consumption but due to drug-drug interaction. It is important that physicians should take drug interactions into consideration while prescribing drugs and also educate patients regarding the same.展开更多

Substandard and counterfeit THMPs, including traditional Chinese patent medicine, health foods, dietary supplements, etc. are potential threats to public health. Recent marketplace studies using DNA barcoding have determined that the current quality control methods are not sufficient for ensuring the presence of authentic herbal ingredients and detection of contaminants/adulterants. An efficient biomonitoring method for THMPs is of great needed. Herein, metabarcoding and single-molecule, realtime(SMRT) sequencing were used to detect the multiple ingredients in Jiuwei Qianghuo Wan(JWQHW), a classical herbal prescription widely used in China for the last 800 years. Reference experimental mixtures and commercial JWQHW products from the marketplace were used to confirm the method. Successful SMRT sequencing results recovered 5416 and 4342 circular-consensus sequencing(CCS) reads belonging to the ITS2 and psb A-trn H regions. The results suggest that with the combination of metabarcoding and SMRT sequencing, it is repeatable, reliable, and sensitive enough to detect species in the THMPs, and the error in SMRT sequencing did not affect the ability to identify multiple prescribed species and several adulterants/contaminants. It has the potential for becoming a valuable tool for the biomonitoring of multi-ingredient THMPs.展开更多
