The liver keeps a delicate balance between hepatic screening of pathogenic antigens and immune tolerance to self-antigens. Herbal treatments with immunological effects have potential to alter this hepatic immune balance towards either therapeutic side or diseases side by inducing liver injury via hepatotoxicity or initiation of autoimmune diseases. Most commonly known herbal treatments, which have therapeutic effect on liver and IS, have proven via in vitro, in vivo, and/or clinical studies were summarized in this review.展开更多

(TSRP) on focal cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injury in rats. Focal cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injury was performed in rats using the suture method. The results indicate that intragastric injection of TSRP, at 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg, could decrease neurological impairment, reduce cerebral infarct volume, diminish pathological changes, and significantly inhibit the apoptosis of neurons surrounding the ischemic area. In addition, TSRP upregulated the expression of the anti-apoptotic factor Bcl-2, at the protein and mRNA levels, and it downregulated the expression of the pro-apoptotic factor Bax, at the protein and mlRNA levels. These findings indicate that TSRP protects against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury, and that it may do so by regulating the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax.展开更多

Pain scores, foot and ankle function questionnaires and regional swelling were carefully assessed and recorded. Peripheral blood was taken to measure the inflammation cytokines. Assessment checks were performed biweekly to enforce effective patch application and compliance. The results showed that pain improved after two weeks and fracture sites swelling had 20% reduction in thickness when measured with an ultrasonic tool. Foot and ankle functional scores markedly improved after six weeks. Radiological examinations revealed early perfect fracture unions. The topical herbal patch was effective in promoting fracture healing. It was well tolerated by the fracture patients. Larger randomized controlled trials would be indicated.展开更多

Methods: A total of 69 senile stroke patients were randomly divided into treatment group (n=38, accepting acupuncture plus herbal medicine treatment) and control group (n=31, accepting herbal medicine treatment only). Principal acupoints used were Baihui(GV 20), Jiquan(HT 1), Jianyu(LI 15), Quchi (LI 11), Zhongwan(RN 12), Siqiang (Extra acupoint) and Zusanli(ST 36),combined with other acupoints according to the symptoms. These acupoints were punctured with filiform needles and stimulated with uniform reinforcing reducing method, once everyday except Sundays, with 30 sessions being a therapeutic course. Chinese medicinal herbs used were Huangqi (Radix Astragali,黄芪)30 g, Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae,党参)30 g, Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, 丹参)30 g, Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra,赤芍)30 g, Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong,川芎)10 g,Dilong (Lumbricus,地龙)10 g, Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae,牛膝)15 g, Jixueteng (Caulis Spatholobi,鸡血藤)30 g and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 甘草)6 g which were decocted in water to be taken one dose everyday (in the morning and evening), continuously for 60 days, with 30 days being a therapeutic course. Results: After treatment, in treatment and control groups, of the 38 and 31 cases, 18 (47.37%) and 8 (25.81%) experienced remarkable improvement, 18 (47.37%) and 18 (58.06%) were effective, and 2 (5.26%) and 5 (16.13%) had no significant changes, with the total effective rates being 94.74% and 83.87% respectively. Simultaneously, indexes of blood rheology as whole blood ratio high shear viscosity (WBRHSV), whole blood ratio low shear viscosity (WBRLSV), plasma ratio viscosity (PRV), hematacrit (HCT) and fibrinogen (Fib) were remarkably reduced in comparison with pre treatment, meaning improvement of the microcirculation (P<0.05-0.01). Conclusion: The results display that acupuncture plus herbal medicine treatment has a better therapeutic effect than that of simple medicinal herb treatment for senile hemiplegia, and both treatments can improve patients’ blood rheology.展开更多

Refractory cases and late presentations are particularly worrying. The uncertainty of cure and the high costs have led to the popularly of complementary and alternative medicine in cancer treatment. Herbal medicine has particular attraction because it has been shown to be working on a multi-targets direction: promoting apoptosis of cancer cells, anti-angiogenesis and immunomodulating. Research on creating a simple herbal formula with multiple effects of cancer control has started and showed in laboratory platforms promising results. Metronomic Chemotherapy: Attention on the use of old oral cytotoxic drugs in small doses for refractory and late cancer cases has started more than a decade. Satisfactory and good results have been found to be related to anti-angiogenesis, immunomodulations and cancer cell apoptosis. These findings are comparable to the use of multiple targets herbal medicine. Conclusion: Assumption is made that metronomic chemotherapy, combined with herbal medicine could be achieving synergistic effects and would be affordable to all patients.展开更多

Hepatocarcinoma patients may present Qi-stagnation, damp-heat, blood stasis, Qi-deficiency, Yin-deficiency and other TCM syndromes(Zheng). Modern treatments such as surgery, transarterial chemoembolization(TACE) and high intensity focus ultrasound treatment would influence the manifestation of TCM syndromes. Herbs with traditional efficacy of tonifying Qi, blood and Yin, soothing liver-Qi stagnation, clearing heat and detoxifying and dissolving stasis, have been demonstrated to be potent to prevent hepatocarcinogenesis. TCM has been widely used in all aspects of integrative therapy in hepatocarcinoma, including surgical resection, liver transplantation, TACE, local ablative therapies and even as monotherapy for middle-advanced stage hepatocarcinoma. Clinical practices have confirmed that TCM is effective to alleviate clinical symptoms, improve quality of life and immune function, prevent recurrence and metastasis, delay tumor progression, and prolong survival time in hepatocarcinoma patients. The effective mechanism of TCM against hepatocarcinoma is related to inducing apoptosis, autophagy, anoikis and cell senescence, arresting cell cycle, regulating immune function, inhibiting metastasis and angiogenesis, reversing drug resistance and enhancing effects of chemotherapy. Along with the progress of research in this field, TCM will contribute more to the prevention and treatment of hepatocarcinoma.展开更多
