A novel high-birefringence photonic crystal fiber (HB-PCF) with two zero-dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs) is designed, and an extraordinarily high modal birefringence of 1.56×10-2 is obtained at pump wavelength λp=1850nm. With the designed HB-PCF, the effect of the pump parameters on the modulation instability (MI) in the anomalous dispersion region close to the second ZDWs of the HB-PCF is comprehensively studied in this work. A broadband and tunable optical amplification is achieved by controlling the pump power and the pump wavelength based on the combined operation of Raman effect and cross phase modulation. By optimizing the pump parameters, the amplification bandwidth along the fiber slow axis reaches 152 nm for the pump power Pp=280W and the pump wavelength λp=1675nm, while the gain bandwidth along the fiber fast axis is 165 nm for the pump power Pp=600W and the pump wavelength λp=1818nm. 展开更多

Background Cotton fiber is a model tissue for studying microtubule-associated proteins(MAPs).The Xklp2(TPX2)proteins that belong to the novel MAPs member mainly participate in the formation and development of microtubule(MT).However, there is a lack of studies concerning the systematic characterization of the TPX2 genes family in cotton. Therefore, the identification and portrayal of G.hirsutum TPX2 genes can provide key targets for molecular manipula-tion in the breeding of cotton fiber improvement.Result In this study,TPX2 family genes were classified into two distinct subclasses TPXLs and MAP genes WAVE DAMP-ENED2-LIKE(WDLs)and quite conservative in quantity.GhWDL3 was significantly up-regulated in 15 days post anthe-sis fibers of ZRI-015(an upland cotton with longer and stronger fiber).GhWDL3 promotes all stem hairs to become straight when overexpressed in Arabidopsis, which may indirectly regulate cotton fiber cell morphology during fiber development.Virus induced gene silencing(VIGS)results showed that GhWDL3 inhibited fiber cell elongation at fiber development periods through regulating the expression of cell wall related genes. Conclusion These results reveal that GhWDL3 regulated cotton fiber cell elongation and provide crucial information for the further investigation in the regulatory mechanisms/networks of cotton fiber length. 展开更多

The fiber length trait (FLT) of 538 individuals from nature birch population in Maorshan region, Heilongjang, China were measured, of which 100 individuals were selected as representative variety of correlated fragments screening with random amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD) technique. In total of 20 RAPD primers were tested through multiple regression analysis between amplified strip and the character behaviors, and a correlative segment BFLR-16 was obtained. The correlation coefficient between BFLI-16 and FLT was 0.6144, with the significant level of 1%. BFLI-16 was then cloned, sequenced and transformed into SCAR marker. The percentage of identifying long fiber birches by this SCAR was more than 92. The result indicates that the SCAR markers has high specificity for the long fiber individuals and is highly linked with the gene controlling the character of fiber length, and its existence is significantly correlative with the increase in the fiber length. 展开更多

Fiber length of cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.)decreases under drought stress, potassium(K)could diminish the decreased caused by drought, but the mechanism associated with this alleviation effect is not clear. We evaluated the effect of K on fiber elongation using two cotton cultivars,Simian 3 and Siza 3,grown in well-watered and drought-stressed conditions.Potassium fertilizer(K2O)was applied 0,150,or 300 kg ha?1 in each growing condition.Drought stress reduced the final fiber length due to a decline in the maximum rate of rapid elongation(Vmax,mmday?1).The application of K alleviated the droughtinduced fiber length reduction by increasing Vmax.At 10 and 15 days post-anthesis(DPA),drought significantly reduced osmotic potential(OP)and increased K+and malate contents at all K rates, relative to well-watered conditions, which was associated with increased activities of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase(PEPC),V-ATPase,PPase,and PM H+-ATPase in cotton fiber. However, the relative contribution of K+and malate to OP declined under drought in comparison with well-watered condition.Compared with control without K,K application decreased OP and increased the accumulation of osmolytes(K+,malate and soluble sugar)as well as the activities of related enzymes in fiber irrespective of water treatments. Moreover,K application increased osmotic adjustment during drought, and improved the contribution of K+and malate to OP,especially under drought stress. This study showed that drought decreased fiber length by reducing Vmax, and K application ameliorates the decline in fiber elongation due to drought by enhancing osmolytes accumulation and their contribution to OP in fiber cells. 展开更多

A measurement method of optical fiber length using timestamp technique is demonstrated. Based on IEEE1588 precise clock synchronization protocol, the principle that time delay asymmetry on two path results in synchronization time deviation is used, and the difference between two-path delays could be deduced by measuring the synchronization time deviation reversely. Then the length of optical fiber on one path could be calculated if that on the other path is known Due to the fact that the path of Sync and Delay_Req message is symmetric, the optical pulse dispersion and the asymmetry of photoelectric detector performance on two paths are averaged by exchanging two optical fibers. The time difference between master and slave clocks is eliminated by sharing the same time base. At last, the lengths of two single-mode optical fibers are measured with the uncertainty of 0. 578 m for 3 227. 722 m and 0. 758 m for 25 491. 522 m, respectively. Thus this method has high precision and long range. 展开更多

Forming zone length (FZL) is a key parameter of the lead-clad glass fiber extrusion dies, and an unsuitable FZL will lead to breakage of the glass fiber and/or unacceptable geometric and metallographic qualities of the product. The optimal FZL was determined theoretically based on a mathematical model established by upper bound method, and accepted Pb-GF wire was actually obtained experimentally by symmetric side-feed extrusion at a much lower temperature than that published before. The wire has features of fine grains, uniform diameter, good coaxiality and satisfied mechanical property. The results and conclusions obtained in the research can be used to design the forming tools for lead-clad glass fiber extrusion and have significance to further research on the extrusion of other complex wires of metal-clad brittle core. 展开更多

Cotton fiber is the most important natural raw material for the textile industry, and fiber length(FL) is one of the most important traits in cotton.Quantitative trait locus(QTL)mapping based on high-density genetic maps is an efficient approach to identify genetic regions for FL.In our study, two backcrossed inbred lines(BILs) were chosen as parents to construct a high-density genetic map in F2 which was used to fine map FL QTL in F2:3 population. The genetic map had a total size of 3462.8 cM, containing 9182 singlenucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) based on genotyping-by-sequencing.Two FL related stable QTL were identified on two chromosomes(qFL-A08–1 on A08 and qFL-D03–1 on D03),and qFL-A08–1 was confirmed by a meta-analysis.Utilizing previously obtained RNA-seq data for the two BILs and qRT-PCR analysis, two candidate genes annotated as cytochrome b5(CB5, Gh_A08 G1729) and microtubule end-binding 1 C(EB1C, Gh_D03 G0232) that may regulate FL during the fiber elongation stage were identified. In addition, nine recombination hotspots in this population were found. The results of this study will provide an important foundation for further studies on the molecular and genetic regulation of fiber elongation. 展开更多

To understand the influences of actual sampling conditions on cotton fiber length testing, this article presents a theoretic study on the distributions and fibrogram of the sample taken out by sampler from ideal sliver at a certain angle. From the distributions expression it can be found that the size of the sampler and the sampling angle are important factors which affect sampling, but if the sampling width is narrow enough, the influence of the sampling angle on the distributions and fibrogram is small enough to be omitted. This is an important conclusion for sampling, in light of this, some suggestions for designing new type sampler are put forward. 展开更多

Background Boron(B)deficiency is an important factor for poor seed cotton yield and fiber quality. However,it is often missing in the plant nutrition program, particularly in developing countries. The current study investigated B’s effect on growth, yield, and fiber quality of Bt(CIM-663)and non-Bt(Cyto-124)cotton cultivars. The experimental plan consisted of twelve treatments:Control(CK);B at 1 mg·kg^(−1) soil application(SB1);2 mg·kg^(−1) B(SB2);3 mg·kg^(−1) B(SB3);0.2%B foliar spray(FB1);0.4%B foliar spray(FB2);1 mg·kg^(−1) B+0.2%B foliar spray(SB1+FB1);1 mg·kg^(−1) B+0.4%B foliar spray(SB1+FB2);2 mg·kg^(−1) B+0.2%B foliar spray(SB2+FB1);2 mg·kg^(−1) B+0.4%B foliar spray(SB2+FB2);3 mg·kg^(−1) B+0.2%B foliar spray(SB3+FB1);3 mg·kg^(−1) B+0.4%B foliar spray(SB3+FB2).Each treat-ment has three replications, one pot having two plants per replication. Results B nutrition at all levels and methods of application significantly(P≤0.05)affected the growth, physiological, yield, and fiber quality characteristics of both cotton cultivars.However,SB2 either alone or in combination with foliar spray showed superiority over others, particularly in the non-Bt cultivar which responded better to B nutrition.Maxi-mum improvement in monopodial branches(345%),sympodial branches(143%),chlorophyll-a(177%),chlorophyll-b(194%),photosynthesis(169%),and ginning out turn(579%)in the non-Bt cultivar was found with SB2 compared with CK.In Bt cultivar, although no consistent trend was found but integrated use of SB3 with foliar spray performed relatively better for improving cotton growth compared with other treatments.Fiber quality characteristics in both cultivars were improved markedly but variably with different B treatments. Conclusion B nutrition with SB2 either alone or in combination with foliar spray was found optimum for improving cotton’s growth and yield characteristics. 展开更多

In our investigation we studied fiber lengths and the transition age from juvenile to mature wood in Acer velutinum Boiss. For this purpose, samples from three normal maple trees at a Noshahr site in northern Iran were selected. Disks were cut at breast height. Test samples were taken along a radial direction from the pith to the bark, accounting for every ring during a 48-year period. We used the Franklin method to distinguish between fibers of juvenile and mature wood. The results show that the fiber length in- creased along the radial direction from the pith to the bark. The transition age between juvenile and mature wood was determined at the 14th annual ring from the pith. 展开更多

An optical length measuring system base on all-fiber optic interferometer is proposed. The theoretical analysis indicates that, when the two branches of the interferometer are equal, the output have the maximum coherent intensity. Therefore, the optical length can be obtained by measuring the distance of collimator movement. Through the experiment and simulation, the impact of the signal-to-noise ratio and fluctuation of the coupling efficiency on null error has been obtained. 展开更多

An Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometric (EFPI) fiber optical sensor system is an online testing system for the gas density. The system achieves the measurement of gas density information mainly by demodulating the cavity length of EF- PI fiber optical sensor. There are many ways to achieve the demodulation of the cavity length. For shortcomings of the big intensity demodulation error and complex structure of phase demodulation, this paper proposes that BP neural net-work is used to locate the special peak points in normalized interference spectrum and combining the advantages of the unimodal and bimodal measurement achieves the demodulation of the cavity length. Through online simulation and actual measurement, the results show that the peak positioning technology based on BP neural network can not only achieve high-precision demodulation of the cavity length, but also achieve an absolute measurement of cavity length in large dynamic range. 展开更多

Fiber length is a critical trait that principally determines cotton spinning quality, while Upland cotton as the most widely cultivated Gossypium species around the world subjects to the relatively ordinary fiber performance.Chromosome segment substitution lines(CSSLs)have been introduced in cotton breeding to take full advantages of superior fiber quality and high yield from Sea Island and Upland cotton, respectively, which serve as ideal materials for elucidating the genetic mechanism of complex quantitative traits. Here, three CSSLs derived from CCRI45(G.hirsutum)×Hai1(G.barbadense),two superior(MBI7561 and MBI7747)and one(MBI7285)with ordinary fiber-quality,were subjected to transcriptome sequencing during fiber elongation together with their recurrent parent CCRI45,and 471.425 million clean reads were obtained with 91.47%average Q30 and 45.23%mean GC content. In total,5,673 differentially expressed genes(DEGs)were identified from multi-sample comparisons, which were mainly involved in the oxidation-reduction process, protein phosphorylation, regulation of transcription,DNA template, and carbohydrate metabolic process.Eight temporal expression patterns were monitored on the DEGs of different lines,of which the significantly enriched profile revealed higher similarities between two superior CSSLs or the ordinary CSSL and CCRI45 with respect to fiber performance.Based on the intersection between the predicted introgressive genes from RNAseq data and the published gene information from the G.barbadense genome,1,535 introgressive genes were identified in three CSSLs.Further analysis of the three common introgressive sections in superior CSSLs revealed eight candidate genes that were identified to be involved in fiber development,namely,O-fucosyltransferase family protein(GB_A02G0240),glutamine synthetase 2(GB_A02G0272),Ankyrin repeat family protein(GB_A02G0264),beta-6 tubulin(GB_D03G1742),WRKY DNA-binding protein 2(GB_D03G1655),quinolinate synthase(GB_D07G0623),nuclear factor Y,subunit B13(GB_D07G0631),and leucine-rich repeat transmembrane protein kinase(GB_D07G0797).Our results provide novel insights into the mechanism underlying fiber formation and lay a solid foundation for further high-efficiency determination of candidate genes by combining RNA-seq data and pivotal chromosome regions. 展开更多

Wavelength-tunable ultrashort pulse source with high energy is highly desired for a lot of applications. The wavelength-tunable all-normal-dispersion (ANDi) mode-locked fiber laser, which can be compressed easily and amplified by an all-fiber structure, is a promising seed of such a source with compact structures. The pulse compression and amplification at different center wavelengths (from 1026 to 1058nm) of the tunable ANDi Yb- doped mode-locked fiber lasers that we previously proposed are experimentally investigated in this work. It is found that, for different wavelengths, the duration and chirp of the direct output pulse from the oscillator vary considerably, however, the duration of compressed pulse fluctuates less. For the amplification process, due to the unf/at gain spectrum of Yb-doped fiber, the gain at a short wavelength is larger than that at a long wavelength. Consequently, the trends of spectrum distortions induced by the amplification process are different for different wavelengths. These results and analyses will be helpful for the design of a high-energy and wavelength-tunable ultrashort pulse source based on an ANDi seed. 展开更多

The wavelength shift in fiber Bragg grating does not depend directly on the total light levels, losses in the connecting fibers and couplers, or source power. However, if the tunable Fabry-Perot filter is place on the end of incident fiber, the detected time delay of modulation light is occurred due to the unmatch between the scanning time and light transmission time in the transmission fiber. Consequently, the detected peak wavelength shifts with the length of transmission fiber. Thus, the peak wavelength shift effect of Bragg reflective light transmitted in fiber with different fiber length can be obvious in the demodulator with a prepositive tunable Fabry-Perot filter. The experiment indicates the shift rates of 0.109 - 0.126 nm/km increase approximately linearly with the original peak wavelength of 1532.917 - 1560.300 nm at the fiber length of 0 - 6 km. To certify the consistency of measurement data, the criterion correction is introduced. By using the differential method of two fiber Bragg gratings with an optical path, the differential worth is compensated from the disturbance modulated by the time delay of fiber length. 展开更多

Background:Fiber length is one of the primary quality parameters for the cotton industry when considering the textile performance and end-use quality of cotton.Currently, many decisions regarding cotton fiber length utilize the industry standard measurement device,i.e.,the High Volume Instrument(HVI).However,it is documented that complete fiber length distributions hold more information than the currently reported HVI length parameters,i.e.,upper half mean length(UHML)and uniformity index(UI).An alternative measurement device, the Advanced Fiber Information System(AFIS),is able to capture additional information about fiber length distribution. What is currently not known is how much additional information the AFIS length distribution holds. Results:The stability of differences in within-sample variation in fiber length captured by the AFIS length distribution by number characterizing differences between samples was deemed stable across the extended testing period.A diverse breeding population was evaluated and four significant sources of within sample variation in length were identified.A comparison of the ability between HVI length parameters and AFIS fiber length distribution to correctly categorize breeding lines to their family was performed. In all cases, the AFIS fiber length distribution more accurately identified germplasm families. Conclusions:The long-term stability test of the AFIS fiber length distribution by number shows that the measurement is stable and can be used to assess differences across samples. However, more information about within-sample variation in fiber length than that can be captured by length parameters is needed to assess differences across samples in many applications.Four length parameters outperform two length parameters when trying to identify the familial background of the samples in this set. These parameters characterize distributional shape differences that are not captured by the standard AFIS length parameters,UQL and short fiber content by number(SFCn).These findings suggest that additional types of variation in cotton fiber length are not captured and are therefore not currently used in most cotton breeding programs. 展开更多

The measurement technique is based on the measurement of relative Fresnel reflected light intensity in a test fiber. Time delayed optical reflected pulses are obtained from a single nanosecond pulse injected at the input due to the difference in lengths of the reference and test fibers. The lengths of the different optical fibers have been measured with this technique with high resolution and fast response time.
