The results showed that T 50 / I 50 ratios of chloroform and chloroacetic acid were 2 77 and 6 16 respectively, with teratogenic potential. T 50 / I 50 ratio of dichloromethane was 1.69, with weaker teratogenic potential. These experimental results indicated preliminarily that the Hydra regeneration assay has certainly applied value as a prescreening assay for developmental toxicity.展开更多

These hydrolyticfunctions underlie a variety of mechanisms related to developmental processes as well as disease states.Structural analysis of metalloproteinases from both invertebrate and vertebrate species indicates that theseenzymes are highly conserved and arose early during metazoan evolution. In this regard, studies from vari-ous laboratories have reported that a number of classes of metalloproteinases are found in hydra, a memberof Cnidaria, the second oldest of existing animal phyla. These studies demonstrate that the hydra genomecontains at least three classes of metalloproteinases to include members of the 1) astacin class, 2) matrix met-alloproteinase class, and 3) neprilysin class. Functional studies indicate that these metalloproteinases playdiverse and important roles in hydra morphogenesis and cell differentiation as well as specialized functionsin adult polyps. This article will review the structure, expression, and function of these metalloproteinasesin hydra.展开更多

In order to understand the evolution of apoptosis in metazoans, we have begun to elucidate the molecular cell death machinery in this model organism. Based on ESTs and the whole Hydra genome assembly, we have identified 15 caspases. We show that one is activated during apoptosis, four have characteristics of initiator caspases with N-terminal DED, CARD or DD domain and two undergo autoprocessing in vitro. In addition, we describe seven Bcl-2-1ike and two Bak-like proteins. For most of the Bcl-2 family proteins, we have observed mitochondrial localization. When expressed in mammalian cells, HyBak-like 1 and 2 strongly induced apoptosis. Six of the Bcl-2 family members inhibited apoptosis induced by camptothecin in mammalian ceils with HyBcl-2-1ike 4 showing an especially strong protective effect. This protein also interacted with HyBak-like 1 in a yeast two-hybrid assay. Mutation of the conserved leucine in its BH3 domain abolished both the interaction with HyBak-like 1 and the anti-apoptotic effect. Moreover, we describe novel Hydra BH-3-only proteins. One of these interacted with Bcl-2-1ike 4 and induced apoptosis in mammalian cells. Our data indicate that the evolution of a complex network for cell death regulation arose at the earliest and simplest level of multicellular organization, where it exhibited a substantially higher level of complexity than in the protostome model organisms Caenorhabditis and Drosophila.展开更多

A discrete-time Beverton- Holt stock recruitment model with Allee effect, harvesting and hydra effect is proposed and studied. Model with strong Allee effect results from incorporating mate limitation in the Beverton-Holt model. We show that these simple models exhibit some interesting (and sometimes unexpected) phenomena such as the hydra effect, sudden collapses and essential extinction. Along with this, harvesting is a socio-economie issue to continue any system generation after generation. Different dynamical behaviors for these situations have been illustrated numerically also. The biological implications of our analytical and numerical findings are discussed critically.展开更多

Although its structure is conserved, the characterized protein components in the current metazoan meiosis model systems (Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans, and Mus musculus) show no sequence homology, challenging the question of a single evolutionary origin of the SC. However, our recent studies revealed the monophyletic origin of the mammalian SC protein components. Many of them being ancient in Metazoa and already present in the cnidarian Hydra. Remarkably, a comparison between different model systems disclosed a great similarity between the SC components of Hydra and mammals while the proteins of the ecdysozoan systems (D. rnelanogaster and C. elegans) differ significantly. In this review, we introduce the basal-branching metazoan species Hydra as a potential novel invertebrate model system for meiosis research and particularly for the investigation of SC evolution, function and assembly. Also, available methods for SC research in Hydra are summarized.展开更多
