Translation Strategies from the Perspective of Hypotaxis and Parataxis

Nida once pointed out one fact that from the perspective of linguistics, the most important distinction between English and Chinese sentences lies in the contrast between hypotaxis and parataxis.”(Nida, 1982:16) Therefore, the use of hypotaxis and parataxis can be seen almost everywhere in the field of Contrastive Study of translation. Then, how to master the key point of hypotaxis and parataxis for translation? Using the research approaches of literature survey and comparative analysis, this paper conducts a comparative study of hypotaxis and parataxis to further explore appropriate translation strategies in terms to language, culture difference and translation.

On Parataxis and Hypotaxis in English and Chinese from the Perspective of Translation

When translating English into Chinese at practice,beginners usually meet with many a problem such as semantic inconsistency,too heavy,etc..The reason is multifaceted,but an important one of the root causes is that the translators haven’t mastered the similarities and differences between the two languages,nor do they understand the different linguistic forms used in different languages to express the same idea.Therefore,this paper discusses one of the main differences in cohesion between Chinese and English,i.e.the emphasis is laid on hypotaxis in English while in Chinese the emphasis is laid on parataxis and puts forward some skills so that beginners can consciously use such skills to guide the practice of translation.The paper also stresses that the understanding of this difference should be consolidated in the practice of translation.

Cultural Dimensional Transformation Techniques of Hypotaxis and Parataxis in Tourist Publicity C-E Translation

In order to make foreign tourists familiar with China's scenic spots, it is necessary that tourist publicity materials are properly translated. Cultural dimension, as one of the three key dimensions of eco-translatology, plays a very important role in translating. With its basis on cultural dimension of eco- translatology, this paper aims to present transformation techniques of parataxis and hypotaxis between Chinese and English. It is suggested that, with the cultural dimensional transformation techniques of parataxis and hypotaxis, translators should exert their subjectivity and creativity to achieve in maximizing the degree of holistic adaptation and selection for achieving successful translations.

On the Transformation Techniques of Hypotaxis and Parataxis in Tourist Publicity C-E Translation from the Perspective of Linguistic Dimension

This paper, with its basis on linguistic dimension of eco- translatology, aims to present transformation techniques of parataxis and hypotaxis in translating tourist publicity between Chinese and English. It is hoped that translators can exert their subjectivity and creativity to achieve the linguistic dimensional transformations of parataxis and hypotaxis to maximize the degree of holistic adaptation and selection for achieving successful translations.

Hypotaxis and Parataxis:A Contrastive Study on the Chinese Original and English Translation of“The Commercial Press and I”

This paper gives a contrastive study on the Chinese and English versions of“The Commercial Press and I”from the per⁃spective of hypotaxis and parataxis.For the Chinese text,most clauses follow chronological order and linear construction.Overt co⁃hesive devices are not necessary in the Chinese text.The semantic logic lies in the context.Of all cohesive devices applied in the English text,the most favored ones are conjunctions,prepositions,and relatives.When connectives are absent in the Chinese text,cohesive devices are intentionally employed in the translation to make the text coherent.

A Comparative Study of YīJiàn Xiǎo Shìand A Small Incident Rendered by the Yangs

Lu Xun’s short stories play a prominent role in the history of modern Chinese literature,and a number of Sinologists have studied them and published their English translations.This paper selects“YīJiàn Xiǎo Shì”in Lu Xun’s collection“Call to Arms”as the object of study,taking hypotaxis and parataxis as the starting point,and compares the translation of Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang with the original version,studying the differences between the them in the process of C-E translation.It is hoped that some flexible conversion strategies in English-Chinese translation can be learned from the translation research.

The Avoidance of Chinglish in C—E Translation from the Comparison of Chinese and English Lexicology and Syntax

This paper attempts to elaborate on the differences from the perspective of comparative study of Chinese and English lexicology and syntax and focus on the dissimilarities between the two languages in terms of words and sentence patterns.On such basis,the strategies of avoiding Chinglish in C-E translation is put forward in order to let Chinese English learners recognize the Chinglish and thus improve their translation ability.

形合、意合,英汉句子互译之准绳

语言学家将世界上的语言分为两类,一类叫综合语(Synthetic Ianguage);这类语言词与词之间的关系主要是靠词序、介词及连词来表示。另一类叫分析语(analytical language);如德语、俄语,主要靠曲折变化来表示词与词之间的关系。汉语和英语同属分析语,在句子结构及语义表达方面有许多相似之处。但在英汉互译过程中,则应了解两种语言在句法结构之中的大相径庭之处。即英语的句子构成均主要为“形合法”(hypotaxis)。

A Case Study of Inter-sentence Conjunctions in Chinese/English Legal Parallel Texts

The present study is a contrastive study of inter-sentence conjunctions in Chinese/English legal parallel texts. Conjunction is one of the five cohesive devices put forward by Halliday and Hasan (1976). Many scholars have applied their model of cohesion to the study of English and Chinese languages. As for the use of conjunction in Chinese and English, most scholars believe that there are more cases of conjunction in the English legal texts than in the Chinese ones because it is generally considered that Chinese is predominantly paratactic and English mainly hypotactic. Besides, up to now little detailed contrastive study has been done on conjunctions in Chinese/English non-literary texts.
