This study analyzed the difference between using a downward breaststroke kick and a horizontal breaststroke kick in a sample of world class elite swimmers. We compared average muscle activity of the gluteus maximus, quadriceps femoris(vastus medialis and rectus femoris),hamstring/long head of the biceps femoris, gastrocnemius medialis, rectus abdominal, and erector spinae when using the downward breaststroke kick technique. We find that when this sample of swimmers utilized the downward breaststroke kick, max speed and velocity per stroke increased, measured by 12,788 EMG samples, where the results are highly correlated to duration of the aerodynamic buoyant force in breaststroke kick technique. The increases in performance observed from measuring the world class elite swimmers is highly correlated to the duration of the kick aerodynamic buoyant force.Among this sample of elite swimmers, the longer a swimmer demonstrates a buoyant force breaststroke kick, the lower the time in a 100 breaststroke. 展开更多

Knowledge Is Invented: Addressing Invention and the Art of Saying in the Psychoanalytic Field

In the Freudian-Lacanian field, there is an important distinction between knowledge and truth. The truth,of an unconscious nature,is something that inhabits us,directs us,but that escapes us.Knowledge,in turn,is something to be invented, from the hole of the Real, the Unconscious truth, and the subjective experience. The relationships between playing, creating, and fantasizing;the dimension of the uncanny, fiction, and imagination in subjectivity;the invention of knowledge of oneself, derived from the pains and flavors of being who one is,are creative dimensions that inhabit the subject, permeate the analytical act,and transversalize psychoanalysis. In the practice,we listen to and witness processes of analysis that awaken an invention/reinvention of oneself,in the process of remembering, repeating, and elaborating, but also in what the transference relationship summons.Knowledge of oneself, does not guarantee a life without mishaps, sadness, and illusions, but allows the invention and recognition of knowledge and a style. The concept of Sinthome(2007),coined by Jacques Lacan, comes in the wake of the processes of self-invention and is a knowing-doing with the symptom, with the paradoxes of joyful suffering, producing,as a result,an art of saying. Therefore,in this communication,I will articulate elements of theory, practice, and psychoanalytic experience that allow us to expand knowledge of the themes of invention and imagination articulated with the concept of sinthome, their relationships with subjectivity, and the direction of psychoanalytic treatment. 展开更多

Cities are co-built spaces by natural environment and human activities, and their formation and development rely on human activities. City spaces, according to Henri Lefebvre, are not only tangible and perceivable, but also heterogeneous, which can be reconstructed. London, as the most ancient city and the political, economic and cultural center of Britain, was depicted in verses of different periods, within which its landscape and city spaces took on different visions and had been endowed with various meanings. The heterogeneous London city spaces reveal historical changes, and, at the same time, reflect how the literary writers understand, perceive and expect from the city. From the Renaissance verses, readers can not only see what the London city was like in realistic writings, but also the imagined spaces based on the reconstructed history, which are the embodiment of the writers’ geopolitical imagination. 展开更多

The Power of Reality: How Radio Documents Stimulate Listeners' Imagination and Emotions?

Sound has great power to move listeners' imagination and stimulate listeners' emotions. Sound makes the imagination work, and mind creates a sequence of associations, obvious and surprising, but always interesting. The sound is strength because of its delicacy. Because it does not create images, it evokes creativity. We see a picture, we even feel its movement. The sound's power of stimulating our imagination is known by the feature makers who-as John Biewen claims-use sound to tell story artfully. The author presents a visualization of sound, paying attention to a few aspects of this visualization, such as using a microphone like a camera, the role of pause/silence as photographs, audioscenography, and suggestiveness of human voice. 展开更多

Imagination as a Means of Accounting for the Alternation Between Imprisonment and Freedom in James Welch's Novel: The Heart Song of Charging Elk

My paper analyzes the issue of the alternation between two complementary concepts which can be analyzed in the novel The Heart Song of Charging Elk: imprisonment and freedom. In order to achieve this goal, I have used several critical theories of authors such as: Michel Foucault, Carl Jung, and Pierre Bourdieu. The analysis is concerned with exploring the alternation between the themes of freedom and imprisonment and the way in which these issues influence the evolution of the main character. I argue that the two themes are in a relation of interdependency and they can be interpreted as opposites from a rational point of view. The rational point of view, although valuable, is, however, incomplete without the exploration of the emotional and subjective factor. This factor can account for the "unreasonable" events from a broader perspective: that of the imagination. As Michel Foucault argues, power exists only in action. Power is also a rather elusive concept. In the same way, the perception of reality can be represented more accurately from a subjective point of view. More exactly, reality is constructed with every thought, emotion, and action of the individual. To sum up, I argue that, from a sociological point of view, the main character is striving to assimilate his personality in a new and hostile cultural environment. On the other hand, from a psychological point of view, he is confronting his inner shadow, as Carl Jung defines the hidden part of the personality. This has a result of the emergence of a genuine sense of self. As the critic Pierre Bourdieu argues, there are a set of common characteristics of taste which define the social belonging of an individual. In the analyzed novel the character manages to adapt to the new situation and to overcome the obstacles that he finds on his way. 展开更多

Visual Imagination and the Mediation of Semiosis: Intertext and the Real in Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure

The writing of Thomas Hardy cannot be readily defined as an embodiment of the Realistic tradition. His too-liminal status as the last Victorian novelist, regional writer, and a collector of English rustics, has been vivaciously debated and contested (Miller, 1970; Widdowson, 1989; Moore, 1990; Morgan, 1992; Armstrong, 2000; Mallet, 2002; Nemesvari, 2011). This argument contributes to the debate on the relation between the real and the textual in Hardy's last novel, Jude the Obscure (1895), which shows that Hardy's language has features of a self-referential novel, close to the antimimetic poetics of postmodernist genres, which insists, however, on the connection with the real, where lies the inspiration for creativity and political intervention. Through the analysis of the allegorical figures of "intertexts" interwoven in the language of the novel, it will be argued that the representation of the novel registers the connection between Hardy's visual imagination and his intention to intervene in a discursive field. 展开更多

This article focuses on the factors that influence the dynamics of the sociological imagination. The author argues for the codependence of sociological theorizing, thinking, and imagination that are analyzed through the prism of the increasing complexity of social and cultural dynamics of the society, the accelerated complex development of human communities within the "arrow of time". He critically discusses the types of sociological imagination worked out by C. Wright Mills, P. Sztompka, S. Fuller, and U. Beck, and proposes his own model of sociological imagination in the form of a non-linear humanistic one that is based on the synthesis of social, hard and humane science. It deals with the acceleration of socio-cultural dynamics and glocal complexity, the integrity of the interdependent humanity, and synergetically takes into consideration paradoxical synthesis, breaks, risks, and dispersions of socium, its obiective, subjectively constructed, and virtual realities, searching for new forms of humanism, based on men's existential needs. It presupposes humane praxis--nowadays the world needs the passing over from technological to humane modernization that can be achieved due to a humanistic turn in sociology, its orientation on a non-linear humanistic sociological imagination. 展开更多

Similarly, vocal music teaching also needs imagination. The power of the sound production lies in breathing, and the singers can control excellent sound production only if longterm and large trainings are undergone. Imagination is one of the indispensable important means in vocal music teaching. Therefore, it should be reasonably used in the vocal music teaching. In this paper, imagination is first reviewed, and then the role and application of imagination in the vocal music teaching is analyzed and discussed, so that some references provided for the better application of imagination in the vocal music teaching. 展开更多

Based on the observed surface suspended matter in the East China Sea in February 2007 and June 2015, an empirical model was established using L1 b's band 4 data to retrieve surface suspended matter from the Moderate Resolution Imagine Spectroradiometer Terra imagery. The squared correlation coefficient is 0.8358, and the root mean square error is 0.4285 mg L-1. The model reflects the distribution characteristics of surface suspended matter in the inner shelf of the East China Sea. In this paper, the satellite images of the study area were retrieved in January from 2001 to 2015, and the monthly distribution of surface suspended matter were obtained. The inter-annual distribution of the study area is similar, and the concentration of surface suspended matter is higher near the shore than offshore. A large amount of surface suspended matter is transported southeast under the influence of Zhejiang and Fujian coastal current and Taiwan warm current. Only a small amount of surface suspension can reach the Kuroshio area. The surface suspended matter concentration changes obviously near the estuary because of the effect of differences in the flux of the Yangtze River. Meanwhile, winter monsoon, temperature front, El Ni?o events, and other factors affect the distribution of surface suspended matter in 100 m isobath to coastal water but minimally influence the distribution in 100 m isobath to deep sea. 展开更多

Flavius Josephus records that Herod the Great created a harbour named Sebastos and a modern city called Caesarea.Archaeologists have been excavating the area now called Caesarea Maritima for decades. Here,Herod constructed a totally man-made port directly into the open sea,a totally revolutionary idea.He brought together architects, engineers,Roman master-builders,and Jewish artisans to construct his dream. His project was accomplished by the use of innovative Roman concrete which set quickly under water. It was immensely durable against the continued battering by the sea.Alongside he built a city surrounded by a protective wall, which comprised a temple,a unique terraced palace on an exposed site,a theatre,a hippo-stadium,and street system with aligned underground sewers.Herod brought together East and West, integrating the best of the traditions in a magnificent port-city.It became the centre of maritime trade between Rome and Alexandria. What remains of Herod's harbour is now underwater. 展开更多

We will discuss here the tension between the reality of new media and narratological theory, and the case in point will be cinema. Our thesis is that new media have to do with illusion, basically with illusion, and only derivatively with imagination; on the contrary, the field of literature has to do with imagination, strictly with imagination, not with illusion at all. If it is so, something must be wrong with the pretence of narratology, which has literature as its basic referent, to be the adequate theoretical frame in order to understand every cultural phenomenon, especially in the case of new media. We have to insist on the distinction between illusion and imagination. In fact, most literary theorists do not bear in mind such distinction; it tends to completely disappear under the general title "fiction." To be sure, it is usually said of cinema that it is fiction, like literature, but cinema is much more than fiction, it is illusion, even if it is the illusion of a story. 展开更多

As one of the greatest Romantic poet,Coleridge had contributed to the realm of poetry many remarkable works,of which conversation poems take a part. The author of this paper chooses one typical piece from the conversation poems,Frost at Midnight, the linking of whose stanzas and sentences is lucid and natural while poetry is well blended into the lines as a harmoni ous unity and thus find out this"graceful and intelligent"coherence deserves deep analysis. The poem is an organic unity sitting on sensational appeals, propelling by rational imaginations, its consistency in both structure and meaning naturally and beautifully achieved via various cleverly-contrived mechanisms, including devices of phonology, syntax and lexicon. Therefore,by repeti tion,contrast,run-on lines,he plants correlations in different nooks of the poem, whose co-operation not only integrates dis persed symbols, creating a perfect coherence in the form, but also embodies an over-arching sense of sublimely inclusive unity from a deep-leveled and omnibus perspective. 展开更多
