Mobile phone addiction is a growing concern among college students, with significant implications for their mental health. This study examines the complex relationship between mobile phone addiction and its impact on college students’ insomnia, symptoms of depression, and anxiety. A sample of 399 college students from traditional Chinese medicine colleges in Guangxi, China, completed the Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale questionnaire. Among them, 155 students with high Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency scores were selected for the correlation study. The analysis revealed a strong association between mobile phone addiction and insomnia. Furthermore, mobile phone addiction was significantly associated with symptoms of depression, including feelings of sadness, worthlessness, and hopelessness, as well as heightened anxiety symptoms, such as excessive worry and restlessness. These findings emphasized the importance of targeted interventions and preventive measures to address the negative impact of mobile phone addiction on college students’ mental health. 展开更多

Based on his teaching experiences and clinical observations at Mental Health Centers, the author presents shortly the results of his clinical researches and will discuss on“psychopathological effects of depression and anxiety on insomnia”and very summarily on the treatment. The studies and lectures at the University Hospitals:Ir.,IL,USA and France, especially during the last decades, have enriched this study research. The experiences and researches have clearly shown that depression and anxiety resulting from catastrophic life events, exert pathological effects not only on cognitive and cardiovascular system but have also psychopathological effects on internal organs such as pineal gland with its melatonin secretion which is considered as stimulator system to regulate the rhythm of wake-sleep.Major depression and anxiety, when accumulating and occurring together, can not only perturb the circadian rhythm, which leads to insomnia, but also in some extreme situations as observed, can engender behavior and personality disorders that in some cases lead to suicide.Concerning the treatments in some cases in which the parents in major depression are suffering from the death of children,in parallel of pharmacotherapy,or other family care and treatments, the author proposed“Child Replacement”plan in period of mourning.Among the various drugs effective for treatment of insomnia we indicate:Agomelatine-Mianserine-Amitriptyline-Doxepin-Fluoxetine,well interesting to be noted. 展开更多

Ghrelin, a brain-gut peptide that induces anxiety and other abnormal emotions, contributes to the effects of insomnia on emotional behavior. In contrast, the traditional Chinese Medi- cine remedy Wen Dan Tang reduces insomnia-related anxiety, which may perhaps correspond to changes in the brain-gut axis. This suggests a possible relationship between Wen Dan Tan^s pharmacological mechanism and the brain-gut axis. Based on this hypothesis, a sleep-deprived rat model was induced and Wen Dan Tang was administered using oral gavage during model es- tablishment. Wen Dan Tang significantly reduced insomnia-related anxiety and prevented Ghrelin level decreases following sleep deprivation, especially in the hypothalamus. Increased expression of Ghrelin receptor mRNA in the hypothalamus was also observed, suggesting that reduced anxi- ety may be a result of Wen Dan Tan's regulation of Ghrelin-Ghrelin receptors. 展开更多

The objective of this study was to carry out a review of the literature covering the topic of the association between sleep, insomnia and the medicinal use of cannabis. The guiding question for carrying out this study was whether the medicinal use of cannabis could have a significant positive impact on reducing insomnia. To this end, a review of the literature on the topic was prepared, both in English and Portuguese, from 2005 to 2023, in the PubMed, Scielo and LILACS databases. To search the databases, the keywords “cannabis”, “cannabidiol”, “tetrahydrocannabinol”, “insomnia” and “endocannabinoid” were used. In total, the initial search resulted in 17 articles. After a more careful analysis, only 6 of these articles met the inclusion criteria established for this study. Thus, it was concluded that, although some studies link the use of medicinal cannabis with an improvement in sleep quality, the current literature still lacks more studies on the topic. 展开更多

Introduction: Anxiety disorders have a lifetime prevalence of 34% with a similar level of heritability (31%) yet lack objective markers that could differentiate patients with underlying conditions. Up to 60%-70% of patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome have anxiety that meets criteria of generalized anxiety disorder, their clinical-DNA findings worth examining as biomarkers for patients with generalized anxiety. Method: Of the 1899 patients diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, 1261 were systematically evaluated for 80 history and 40 physical findings and separated into 826 who reported anxiety and 435 who did not. The most consistently reported or management-directing 60 of these clinical findings were, along with variations in genes relevant to these disorders, examined for association with anxiety. Results: Among the 30 anxiety- associated findings judged most predictive of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in patients with anxiety were expected ones of adrenergic stimulation (difficulty concentrating-87% frequency and 1.26 anxiety/no anxiety ratio;chronic fatigue-84%, 1.17;sleep issues 69%, 1.52 that are criteria for generalized anxiety disorder) or of cholinergic suppression (e.g., frequent nausea 64%, 1.26). Less associated but more discriminating for underlying disease were those reflective of neuromuscular impact (e.g., chronic daily headaches 76%, 1.12);hypermobility (e.g., awareness of flexibility 72%, 1.03), or skin changes (e.g., elasticity around jaw 71%, 1.06). Anxiety-associated DNA variants included 54 of 88 in collagen type I/V/VII/IX genes, 14 of 16 in sodium channel SCN9A/10A/ 11A genes, 59 of 85 in POLG/MT-DNA genes, and 21 of 28 in profilaggrin- FLG genes that respectively impacted tissue laxity, sensory neural, autonomic-mitochondrial, and autonomic-inflammatory functions. Conclusion: Analysis of pathogenetic mechanisms in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome selected some 50 clinical-DNA findings useful for its diagnosis in those with generalized anxiety disorders. 展开更多

In recent years, insomnia has gradually become a common disease in society, which seriously affects people's quality of life.At present, with the deepening of research on intestinal microbiota-gut-brain axis in Western medicine, many studies suggest that regulating the gastrointestinal tract can treat brain-related diseases. It is found that brain-gut-bacteria axis plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of primary insomnia. At present, although the clinical treatment of insomnia with Western medicine can improve the insomnia symptoms of patients to a certain extent, there are still obvious adverse reactions, such as anxiety and depression, drug addiction, etc.,so long-term oral drug therapy cannot be carried out.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)and acu-puncture techniques have certain therapeutic effects on insomnia.TCM believes that the brain and gastrointestinal system are connected through the meridian, and the pathophysiology is closely related. This paper will discuss the theory and feasibility of TCM for the treatment of insomnia from the pathological relation-ship between brain-gut axis, intestinal flora and insomnia. 展开更多

Insomnia is among the most common sleep disorders worldwide.Insomnia in older adults is a social and public health problem.Insomnia affects the physical and mental health of elderly hospitalized patients and can aggravate or induce physical illnesses.Understanding subjective feelings and providing reasonable and standardized care for elderly hospitalized patients with insomnia are urgent issues.AIM To explore the differences in self-reported outcomes associated with insomnia among elderly hospitalized patients.METHODS One hundred patients admitted to the geriatric unit of our hospital between June 2021 and December 2021 were included in this study.Self-reported symptoms were assessed using the Athens Insomnia Scale(AIS),Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7(GAD-7),Geriatric Depression Scale-15(GDS-15),Memorial University of Newfoundland Scale of Happiness(MUNSH),Barthel Index Evaluation(BI),Morse Fall Scale(MFS),Mini-Mental State Examination, and the Short Form 36 Health Survey Questionnaire(SF-36).Correlation coefficients were used to analyze the correlation between sleep quality and self-reported symptoms.Effects of insomnia was analyzed using Logistic regression analysis.RESULTS Nineteen patients with AIS≥6 were included in the insomnia group, and the incidence of insomnia was 19%(19/100).The remaining 81 patients were assigned to the non-insomnia group. There were significant differences between the two groups in the GDA-7,GDS-15,MUNSH,BI,MFS,and SF-36 items(P<0.05).Patients in the insomnia group were more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses,as well as difficulties with everyday tasks and a greater risk of falling(P<0.05).Subjective well-being and quality of life were poorer in the insomnia group than in the control group. The AIS scores positively correlated with the GAD-7,GDS-15,and MFS scores in elderly hospitalized patients with insomnia(P<0.05).Logistic regression analysis showed that GDS-15≥5 was an independent risk factor for insomnia in elderly hospitalized patients(P<0.05).CONCLUSION The number of self-reported symptoms was higher among elderly hospitalized patients with insomnia. Therefore,we should focus on the main complaints of patients to meet their care needs. 展开更多

Background:Insomnia is a prevalent clinical condition and Shangxia Liangji formula(SXLJF)is a well-established method of treatment.Nevertheless, the specific mechanism of action of SXLJF remains unclear. Methods:The mouse model of insomnia was established by intraperitoneal injection of para-chlorophenylalanine.Forty-two mice were randomly divided into a negative control group, model group,SXLJF group(18.72 g/kg/day),and positive control group(diazepam,2 mg/kg)and treated with the corresponding drugs for 7 consecutive days. The open field test and pentobarbital-induced sleeping test were conducted.LC-MS-based untargeted metabolomics and network pharmacology were applied to explore the potential targets of SXLJF for treating insomnia. Finally, key targets were validated using RT-qPCR.Results:Behavioral tests demonstrated that SXLJF reduced the total distance, average velocity, central distance, and sleep latency, and prolonged sleep duration.Metabolomics and network pharmacology revealed potential targets, signaling pathways, metabolic pathways, and metabolites associated with the anti-insomnia effects of SXLJF.Specifically, tyrosine hydroxylase(TH)and tyrosine metabolism emerged as crucial metabolic pathways and targets,respectively.RT-qPCR results supported the role of TH in the mechanism of SXLJF in treating insomnia. Conclusion:In conclusion,TH and tyrosine metabolism may represent significant targets and pathways for SXLJF in treating insomnia. 展开更多

Background:Adolescent anxiety has a significant impact on physical and mental health, and overparenting is recognized as one of the major factors affecting adolescent anxiety. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between overparenting and adolescent anxiety, while also examining the mediating role of cognitive avoidance. Methods:Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey with 1931 valid responses using the Overparenting Scale, the Cognitive Avoidance Scale, and the Anxiety Self-Rating Scale.A structural equation modelling approach was used to test the mediating role of cognitive avoidance between overparenting and adolescent anxiety and to reveal the underlying mechanisms. The significance of the mediating effect was assessed based on maximum likelihood estimation.Differences in the mediating role of cognitive avoidance in the male and female samples were comparatively analyzed in the mediation effect analysis. Results:The study’s findings reveal a significant positive correlation between overparenting and adolescent anxiety(p<0.01),between overparenting and cognitive avoidance(p<0.01),and between cognitive avoidance and adolescent anxiety(p<0.01).Cognitive avoidance mediated the relationship between overparenting and adolescent anxiety.Overparenting can not only directly predict adolescent anxiety but also indirectly predict it through the mediating role of cognitive avoidance. Conclusion:This study validates the direct effect of overparenting on adolescent anxiety and reveals the mechanism of cognitive avoidance as a mediator. 展开更多

Social anxiety (SA) is a prevalent mental health issue among adolescents, and vulnerable narcissism (VN) can exacerbate thiscondition. This study aims to investigate the impact of vulnerable narcissism on social anxiety in adolescents, specificallyfocusing on the mediating effects of self-concept clarity (SCC) and self-esteem (SE) in the relationship between vulnerablenarcissism and social anxiety. Through cluster sampling, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 982 students from threesecondary schools in two provinces. The data was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results revealedthat there was a significant negative correlation between vulnerable narcissism and both self-concept clarity and self-esteem,while there was a significant positive correlation between vulnerable narcissism and social anxiety. Additionally, self-conceptclarity showed a significant positive correlation with self-esteem but had a negative correlation with social anxiety. Both selfconceptclarity and self-esteem played an intermediary role in the chain linking vulnerable narcissism to social anxiety. Thisstudy confirms the mediating role of both self-concept clarity and self-esteem in explaining how vulnerable narcissisminfluences social anxiety, providing valuable insights into its underlying mechanism. 展开更多
