A CAD-based inspection planning strategy for video measuring instrument is proposed to improve manufacturing effec- tiveness. The system consists of a video probe that enables itself to inspect a work piece based on a CAD model. The measurement software includes CAIP module and MDP module. The CAIP module is developed based on a CAD development platform whose kernel is the Open CASCADE. The entire system was tested, and relevant examples show that the system can accomplish automatic inspection planning task for common parts efficiently. 展开更多

Computer aided inspection planning (CAIP) is one of the key quality assurance techniques in CIMS.CAIP generates inspection process data based on the product design requirements. Therefore, a unified product information model should be used to share product data with the CAD system. As a data exchange standard coveringthe complete product fife cycle, STEP could be used to integrate data transfer between CAD and CAIP. An inspection oriented mechanical product information model (IOMPIM ) is proposed in this paper. It includes form features,dimensional and tolerance information and uses EXPRESS for information modeling. The STEP pre-processor andpost-processor have been developed to transfer product model information between CAD and CAIP using the STEPneutral file. In preliminary system tests, product information for many complex parts was transferred through theCIMS environment with the CAIP system generating rational inspection processes. A coordinate measuring machinewas then used for quality inspection of the parts. 展开更多

Cost-Benefit Assessment of Inspection and Repair Planning for Ship Structures Considering Corrosion Model Uncertainty

Owing to high costs and unnecessary inspections necessitated by the traditional inspection planning for ship structures, the risk-based inspection and repair planning should be investigated for the most cost-effective inspection. This paper aims to propose a cost-benefit assessment model of risk-based inspection and repair planning for ship structures subjected to corrosion deterioration. Then, the benefit-cost ratio is taken to be an index for the selection of the optimal inspection and repair strategy. The planning problem is formulated as an optimization problem where the benefit-cost ratio for the expected lifetime is maximized with a constraint on the minimum acceptalbe reliability index. To account for the effect of corrosion model uncertainty on the cost-benefit assessment, two corrosion models, namgly, Paik' s model and Guedes Soares' model, are adopted for analysis. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the proposed method. Sensitivity studies are also providet. The results indicate that the proposed method of risk-based cost-benefit analysis can effectively integrate the economy with reliability of the inspection and repair planning. A balance can be achieved between the risk cost and total expected inspection and repair costs with the proposed method, which is very. effective in selecting the optimal inspection and repair strategy. It is pointed out that the corrosion model uncertainty and parametric uncertaintg have a significant impact on the cost-benefit assessment of inspection and repair planning. 展开更多

Recently,the Darna distribution has been introduced as a new lifetime distribution.The two-parameter Darna distribution represents is a mixture of two well-known gamma and exponential distributions.A manufacturer or an engineer of products conducts life testing to examine whether the quality level of products meets the customer’s requirements,such as reliability or the minimum lifetime.In this article,an attribute modified chain sampling inspection plan based on the time truncated life test is proposed for items whose lifetime follows the Darna distribution.The plan parameters,including the sample size,the acceptance number,and the past lot result of the proposed sampling plan,are determined with the help of the two-point approach considering the acceptable quality level(AQL)and the limiting quality level(LQL).The plan parameters and the corresponding operating characteristic functions of a new plan are provided in tabular form for various Darna distribution parameters.Also,a few illustrated examples are presented for various distribution parameters.The usefulness of the proposed attribute modified chain sampling plan is investigated using two real failure time datasets.The results indicate that the proposed sampling plan can reduce the sample size when the termination ratio increases for fixed values of the producer’s risk and acceptance number.Hence,the proposed attribute modified chain sampling inspection plan is recommended to practitioners in the field. 展开更多

Integration of Machining and Measuring Processes Using On-Machine Measurement Technology

This paper presents an integration methodology for ma chining and measuring processes using OMM (On-Machine Measurement) technology b ased on CAD/CAM/CAI integration concept. OMM uses a CNC machining center as a me asuring station by changing the tools into measuring probes such as touch-type, laser and vision. Although the measurement accuracy is not good compared to tha t of the CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine), there are distinctive advantages us ing OMM in real situation. In this paper, two topics are handled to show the eff ectiveness of the machining and measuring process integration: (1) inspection pl anning strategy for sculptured surface machining and (2) tool path compensation for profile milling process. For the first topic, as a first step, effective mea suring point locations are determined to obtain optimum results for given sampli ng numbers. Two measuring point selection methods are suggested based on the CAD /CAM/CAI integration concept: (1) by the prediction of cutting errors and (2) by considering cutter contact points to avoid the measurement errors caused by cus ps. As a next step, the TSP (Traveling Salesman Problem) algorithm is applied to minimize the probe moving distance. Appropriate simulations and experiments are performed to verify the proposed inspection planning strategy, and the results are analyzed. For the second topic, a methodology for profile milling error comp ensation is presented by using an ANN (Artificial Neural Network) model trained by the inspection database of OMM system. First, geometric and thermal errors of the machining center are compensated using a closed-loop configuration for the improvement of machining and inspection accuracy. The probing errors are also t aken into account. Then, a specimen workpiece is machined and then the machi ning surface error distribution is measured on the machine using touch-type pro be. In order to efficiently analyze the machining errors, two characteristic err or parameters (W err and D err) are defined. Subsequently, these param eters are modeled by applying the RFB (Radial Basis Function) network approach a s an ANN model. Based on the RBF network model, the tool paths are compensated i n order to effectively reduce the errors by employing an iterative algorithm. In order to validate the approaches proposed in this paper, a concrete case of the machining process is taken into account and about 90% of machining error reduction is successfully accomplished through the proposed approaches. 展开更多

In this article,the authors propose a modified version of S.L.Chen and Liu’s model with a two-stage production system.Assume that the retailer’s order quantity is concerned with the manufacturer’s selling price and the warranty period of product.The used cost of the customer is measured under the Taguchi’s quadratic quality loss function and concluded in the retailer’s profit function.The quality of the lot for the manufacturer is determined by adopting a two-stage single sampling rectifying inspection plan.The modified economic manufacturing quantity(EMQ)model is addressed in formulating the manufacturer’s expected profit.The retailer’s order quantity,manufacturer’s wholesale price,production run length,process mean,and warranty period of product will be jointly determined by maximizing the total expected profit of the supply chain system including the manufacturer and the retailer.Finally,the quality investment policy is introduced to illustrate the profit improvement for the supply chain system. 展开更多
