Based on China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)2018 data, the multiple linear regression model is used to analyze the effects of Internet use on women’s depression, and to test the robustness of the regression results. At the same time, the effects of Internet use on mental health of women with different residence, age, marital status and physical health status are analyzed. Then,we can obtain that Internet use has a significant promoting effect on women’s mental health, while the degree of Internet use has a significant inhibitory effect on women’s mental health. In addition, the study found that women’s age, education, place of residence, marital status, length of sleep, working status and physical health status are the main factors affecting the mental health of Chinese women. In the heterogeneity investigation of residence, age, marital status and physical health status,Internet use has a greater negative impact on the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale(CES-D8)scores of women in rural areas, has a significant positive impact on the mental health of middle-aged and elderly women or women with spouses, and has a positive impact on the mental health of physically unhealthy women. Therefore,in view of women’s mental health needs and the problems existing in the use of the Internet, this paper puts forward some suggestions to further improve the overall mental health level of women. 展开更多

The Internet is believed to bring more technological dividends to vulnerable farmers during the green agriculture transformation. However, this is different from the theory of skill-biased technological change, which emphasizes that individuals with higher levels of human capital and more technological endowments benefit more. This study investigates the effects of Internet use on farmers'adoption of integrated pest management(IPM),theoretically and empirically, based on a dataset containing 1015 farmers in China's Shandong Province.By exploring the perspective of rational inattention, the reasons for the heterogeneity of the effects across farmers with different endowments,i.e.,education and land size, are analyzed. The potential endogeneity issues are addressed using the endogenous switching probit model. The results reveal that:(1)although Internet use significantly positively affects farmers'adoption of IPM,vulnerable farmers do not benefit more from it.Considerable selection bias leads to an overestimation of technological dividends for vulnerable farmers;(2)different sources of technology information lead to the difference in the degree of farmers'rational inattention toward Internet information, which plays a crucial role in the heterogeneous effect of Internet use;and(3)excessive dependence on strong-tie social network information sources entraps vulnerable farmers in information cocoons, hindering their ability to reap the benefits of Internet use fully. Therefore,it is essential to promote services geared towards elderly-oriented Internet agricultural technology information and encourage farmers with strong Internet utilization skills to share technology information with other farmers actively. 展开更多

China is characterized as ’a large country with many smallholder farmers’ whose participation in modern agriculture is key to the country’s modern agriculture development. Promoting smallholder farmers’ adoption of modern agricultural production technology is one effective way to improve the capabilities of smallholder farmers. This paper aims to explore the impact of Internet use on the adoption of agricultural production technology by smallholder farmers based on a survey of 1 449 smallholders across 14 provinces in China. The results suggest that Internet use can significantly promote technology adoption, with the probability of adopting new crop varieties, water-saving irrigation technology and straw-returning technology increasing by 0.200, 0.157 and 0.155, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of Internet use is found to be heterogeneous with a greater effect on smallholder farmers having low education levels, limited training, and high incomes. To increase agricultural production technology adoption by smallholders, rural Internet infrastructure and Internet use promotion should be the focus for the Chinese government. 展开更多

Based on three datasets of the Chinese Social Survey(CSS)2013,2015,and 2017 and the National Statistical Yearbook, this study examined whether and in what ways using the Internet may or may not affect the public evaluation of government environmental governance(GEG).There are three main findings.First,Internet use has a negative influence on the public evaluation of GEG.Second, there has been an urban-rural difference in terms of Internet use;especially for the rural resident, increasing their use of the Internet significantly lowered their evaluation of GEG.Third,Internet use affects GEG mainly through political trust, whilst it tends to enhance people’s perception of environmental problems;however,it has little influence on their evaluation of GEG.This finding implies that public evaluation of GEG should be viewed as an important inter-subjective dimension of GEG;especially in the Internet era,it has become increasingly necessary for the government to not only continuously improve the quality of governance by dealing with actual/practical environmental issues, but also enhance its ability to react to the public opinions online effectively and appropriately. 展开更多

With the growing popularity of digital devices, lntemet has become an integral part of teenagers' daily life. As teenagers are in a complicated period of development, parents struggle in supervising their use of the intemet. This study takes the teenagers' standpoint and explores how the teenagers perceive their parents' involvement in their Internet use. Survey was conducted towards teenagers in the UAE, which has the highest penetration of digital devices in the Gulf region as well as one of the highest in the world. The results showed that girls usually receive more supervision fi'om parents than boys. The older the teenagers are and the more they depend on the Internet, the more they perceive parents' supervision to be beneficial. However, not enough supervision has been given to those who access the Internet more frequently. The findings indicate more parents' supervision is needed from the teenagers' point of view. Discussions are made from psychological and socio-cultural perspectives and suggestions for future research are presented. 展开更多

Both Internet use’s impact on depression and urban-rural disparities related to information and communication technologies(ICTs)are crucial topics in the information systems discipline. So far, limited studies have explored these topics in a comprehensive way. This study aims to explore the impact of Internet use on urban and rural older adults’depression and provide insights into how ICTs play positive roles in human behaviors.Based on data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study,we used the panel-data regression approach to examine the relationships between older adults’Internet use and depression, and adopted the propensity score matching and the difference-in-difference approach to test the robustness of our findings. We found that the influencing mechanisms behind Internet use’s impact on urban and rural older adults’depression are different.Internet use not only directly reduces rural older adults’depression but also indirectly reduces it via the mediation of social activity, while the impact of Internet use on urban older adults’depression is fully mediated by social activity. We found that Internet use exerts different impacts on urban and rural older adults’depression, and rural older adults can receive a greater benefit. 展开更多

Clarifying the relationship between internet use and public information security risk perception helps us gain a better understanding of the factors influencing public risk perception. However, the relationship is still under-explored.This paper empirically examines the relationship between internet use and information security risk perception based on data from the 2021 Chinese Social Survey. It was found that whether to use the internet and the frequency of use are both significantly positively correlated with the perception of information security risk.On this basis, the mechanism by which internet use affects public information security risk perceptions is verified from the perspective of interpersonal trust. The mechanism analysis found that interpersonal trust exerts an indirect effect between internet use and perceived information security risk. The findings of this study provide new insights for our further understanding of how internet use affects residents'perceptions of securityrisk. 展开更多

Internet use has become an indispensable part of people’s daily lives, and the relationship between Internet use and residents’subjective well-being is receiving increasing attention from researchers. However, the existing literature on the relationship between Internet use and residents’subjective well-being is still controversial and inconclusive, and there has been relatively little discussion of the mechanisms by which Internet use affects well-being.On the basis of data from the China General Social Survey 2015(CGSS2015),this paper provides an empirical analysis of the impact of Internet usage on residents’subjective wellbeing. The study finds that while Internet use had no significant impact on the well-being of residents compared to non-use,frequency of Internet usage did significantly improve subjective well-being.On this basis,we tested the mechanisms by which Internet use affects residents’well-being through the three channels of the personal income effect, the human capital effect and the social capital effect. The findings partially verify the hypothesis of the mediating effect of social capital between Internet use and residents’subjective wellbeing, but do not verify the hypothesis of the moderating effect of personal income and human capital.Compared with previous studies, this paper is innovative in the following three ways:it uses the latest available representative national microdata, which is better able to reflect recent Internet usage and its impact on residents’subjective well-being;on the basis of existing research on the impact of Internet usage on residents’well-being,it analyzes the specific mechanisms through which Internet use affects well-being,using the moderating effect model and the mediating effect model to make up for the shortcomings of existing research on the impact mechanism;and it applies the Bioprobit model to deal with the potential endogeneity of key explanatory variables, using a variety of model estimation methods to obtain more robust estimation results. 展开更多
