Over the past few decades, the Internet has rapidly diffused across China. The spread of the Internet has had a profound economic and social impact on Chinese rural areas.Existing research shows that Internet access significantly impacts agricultural production and improves smallholder farmers’income.Beyond these, the Internet can affect other dimensions of social welfare. However, research about the impact of Internet access on dietary quality in rural China remains scarce. This study utilizes multi-period panel data from Fixed Observation Point in rural China from 2009 to 2015 to estimate the impact of Internet access on dietary quality and food consumption of rural households and conducts a causal analysis.Regression models with time and household fixed effects allow robust estimation while reducing potential issues of unobserved heterogeneity. The estimates show that Internet access has significantly increased rural household dietary quality(measured by the Chinese Diet Balance Index).Further research finds that Internet access has increased the consumption of animal products, such as aquatic and dairy products. We also examine the underlying mechanisms.Internet access improves dietary quality and food consumption mainly through increasing household income and food expenditure. These results encourage the promotion of Internet access as a valuable tool for nutritional improvements, especially in rural areas. 展开更多

High-efficiency and low-cost knowledge sharing can improve the decision-making ability of autonomous vehicles by mining knowledge from the Internet of Vehicles(IoVs).However,it is challenging to ensure high efficiency of local data learning models while preventing privacy leakage in a high mobility environment. In order to protect data privacy and improve data learning efficiency in knowledge sharing,we propose an asynchronous federated broad learning(FBL)framework that integrates broad learning(BL)into federated learning(FL).In FBL,we design a broad fully connected model(BFCM)as a local model for training client data.To enhance the wireless channel quality for knowledge sharing and reduce the communication and computation cost of participating clients,we construct a joint resource allocation and reconfigurable intelligent surface(RIS)configuration optimization framework for FBL.The problem is decoupled into two convex subproblems.Aiming to improve the resource scheduling efficiency in FBL,a double Davidon–Fletcher–Powell(DDFP)algorithm is presented to solve the time slot allocation and RIS configuration problem.Based on the results of resource scheduling,we design a reward-allocation algorithm based on federated incentive learning(FIL)in FBL to compensate clients for their costs. The simulation results show that the proposed FBL framework achieves better performance than the comparison models in terms of efficiency, accuracy, and cost for knowledge sharing in the IoV. 展开更多

The Internet of Things(IoT)is a smart networking infrastructure of physical devices,i.e.,things,that are embedded with sensors, actuators, software, and other technologies,to connect and share data with the respective server module.Although IoTs are cornerstones in different application domains, the device’s authenticity,i.e.,of server(s)and ordinary devices,is the most crucial issue and must be resolved on a priority basis. Therefore, various field-proven methodologies were presented to streamline the verification process of the communicating devices;however,location-aware authentication has not been reported as per our knowledge, which is a crucial metric, especially in scenarios where devices are mobile. This paper presents a lightweight and location-aware device-to-server authentication technique where the device’s membership with the nearest server is subjected to its location information along with other measures.Initially,Media Access Control(MAC)address and Advance Encryption Scheme(AES)along with a secret shared key,i.e.,λ_(i) of 128 bits, have been utilized by Trusted Authority(TA)to generate MaskIDs,which are used instead of the original ID,for every device,i.e.,server and member, and are shared in the offline phase.Secondly,TA shares a list of authentic devices,i.e.,server S_(j) and members C_(i),with every device in the IoT for the onward verification process, which is required to be executed before the initialization of the actual communication process.Additionally, every device should be located such that it lies within the coverage area of a server, and this location information is used in the authentication process.A thorough analytical analysis was carried out to check the susceptibility of the proposed and existing authentication approaches against well-known intruder attacks,i.e.,man-in-the-middle,masquerading,device,and server impersonations, etc.,especially in the IoT domain. Moreover, proposed authentication and existing state-of-the-art approaches have been simulated in the real environment of IoT to verify their performance, particularly in terms of various evaluation metrics,i.e.,processing,communication,and storage overheads. These results have verified the superiority of the proposed scheme against existing state-of-the-art approaches, preferably in terms of communication, storage, and processing costs. 展开更多

Traditional Io T systems suffer from high equipment management costs and difficulty in trustworthy data sharing caused by centralization.Blockchain provides a feasible research direction to solve these problems. The main challenge at this stage is to integrate the blockchain from the resourceconstrained Io T devices and ensure the data of Io T system is credible. We provide a general framework for intelligent Io T data acquisition and sharing in an untrusted environment based on the blockchain, where gateways become Oracles. A distributed Oracle network based on Byzantine Fault Tolerant algorithm is used to provide trusted data for the blockchain to make intelligent Io T data trustworthy. An aggregation contract is deployed to collect data from various Oracle and share the credible data to all on-chain users. We also propose a gateway data aggregation scheme based on the REST API event publishing/subscribing mechanism which uses SQL to achieve flexible data aggregation. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme can alleviate the problem of limited performance of Io T equipment, make data reliable, and meet the diverse data needs on the chain. 展开更多

In this paper,we present a comprehensive system model for Industrial Internet of Things(IIoT)networks empowered by Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access(NOMA)and Mobile Edge Computing(MEC)technologies. The network comprises essential components such as base stations, edge servers, and numerous IIoT devices characterized by limited energy and computing capacities. The central challenge addressed is the optimization of resource allocation and task distribution while adhering to stringent queueing delay constraints and minimizing overall energy consumption. The system operates in discrete time slots and employs a quasi-static approach, with a specific focus on the complexities of task partitioning and the management of constrained resources within the IIoT context. This study makes valuable contributions to the field by enhancing the understanding of resourceefficient management and task allocation, particularly relevant in real-time industrial applications.Experimental results indicate that our proposed algorithmsignificantly outperforms existing approaches, reducing queue backlog by 45.32% and 17.25% compared to SMRA and ACRA while achieving a 27.31% and 74.12% improvement in Qn O.Moreover, the algorithmeffectively balances complexity and network performance,as demonstratedwhen reducing the number of devices in each group(Ng)from 200 to 50,resulting in a 97.21% reduction in complexity with only a 7.35% increase in energy consumption. This research offers a practical solution for optimizing IIoT networks in real-time industrial settings. 展开更多

Fog computing is considered as a solution to accommodate the emergence of booming requirements from a large variety of resource-limited Internet of Things(IoT)devices. To ensure the security of private data,in this paper,we introduce a blockchain-enabled three-layer device-fog-cloud heterogeneous network.A reputation model is proposed to update the credibility of the fog nodes(FN),which is used to select blockchain nodes(BN)from FNs to participate in the consensus process.According to the Rivest-Shamir-Adleman(RSA)encryption algorithm applied to the blockchain system,FNs could verify the identity of the node through its public key to avoid malicious attacks.Additionally,to reduce the computation complexity of the consensus algorithms and the network overhead,we propose a dynamic offloading and resource allocation(DORA)algorithm and a reputation-based democratic byzantine fault tolerant(R-DBFT)algorithm to optimize the offloading decisions and decrease the number of BNs in the consensus algorithm while ensuring the network security.Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm could efficiently reduce the network overhead, and obtain a considerable performance improvement compared to the related algorithms in the previous literature. 展开更多

The Internet of Things(IoT)has characteristics such as node mobility, node heterogeneity, link heterogeneity, and topology heterogeneity. In the face of the IoT characteristics and the explosive growth of IoT nodes, which brings about large-scale data processing requirements, edge computing architecture has become an emerging network architecture to support IoT applications due to its ability to provide powerful computing capabilities and good service functions. However, the defense mechanism of Edge Computing-enabled IoT Nodes(ECIoTNs)is still weak due to their limited resources,so that they are susceptible to malicious software spread, which can compromise data confidentiality and network service availability.Facing this situation,we put forward an epidemiology-based susceptible-curb-infectious-removed-dead(SCIRD)model.Then,we analyze the dynamics of ECIoTNs with different infection levels under different initial conditions to obtain the dynamic differential equations.Additionally,we establish the presence of equilibrium states in the SCIRD model.Furthermore,we conduct an analysis of the model’s stability and examine the conditions under which malicious software will either spread or disappear within Edge Computing-enabled IoT(ECIoT)networks.Lastly,we validate the efficacy and superiority of the SCIRD model through MATLAB simulations. These research findings offer a theoretical foundation for suppressing the propagation of malicious software in ECIoT networks. The experimental results indicate that the theoretical SCIRD model has instructive significance, deeply revealing the principles of malicious software propagation in ECIoT networks. This study solves a challenging security problem of ECIoT networks by determining the malicious software propagation threshold, which lays the foundation for buildingmore secure and reliable ECIoT networks. 展开更多

With the advancement of wireless network technology, vast amounts of traffic have been generated, and malicious traffic attacks that threaten the network environment are becoming increasingly sophisticated. While signature-based detection methods, static analysis, and dynamic analysis techniques have been previously explored for malicious traffic detection, they have limitations in identifying diversified malware traffic patterns.Recent research has been focused on the application of machine learning to detect these patterns. However, applying machine learning to lightweight devices like IoT devices is challenging because of the high computational demands and complexity involved in the learning process. In this study,we examined methods for effectively utilizing machine learning-based malicious traffic detection approaches for lightweight devices. We introduced the suboptimal feature selection model(SFSM),a feature selection technique designed to reduce complexity while maintaining the effectiveness of malicious traffic detection.Detection performance was evaluated on various malicious traffic, benign, exploits, and generic, using the UNSW-NB15 dataset and SFSM sub-optimized hyperparameters for feature selection and narrowed the search scope to encompass all features.SFSM improved learning performance while minimizing complexity by considering feature selection and exhaustive search as two steps,a problem not considered in conventional models. Our experimental results showed that the detection accuracy was improved by approximately 20%compared to the random model, and the reduction in accuracy compared to the greedy model, which performs an exhaustive search on all features, was kept within 6%.Additionally,latency and complexity were reduced by approximately 96%and 99.78%,respectively,compared to the greedy model. This study demonstrates that malicious traffic can be effectively detected even in lightweight device environments.SFSM verified the possibility of detecting various attack traffic on lightweight devices. 展开更多

Internet of Things(IoT)is vulnerable to data-tampering(DT)attacks.Due to resource limitations, many anomaly detection systems(ADSs)for IoT have high false positive rates when detecting DT attacks. This leads to the misreporting of normal data, which will impact the normal operation of IoT.To mitigate the impact caused by the high false positive rate of ADS,this paper proposes an ADS management scheme for clustered IoT.First,we model the data transmission and anomaly detection in clustered IoT.Then, the operation strategy of the clustered IoT is formulated as the running probabilities of all ADSs deployed on every IoT device. In the presence of a high false positive rate in ADSs,to deal with the trade-off between the security and availability of data,we develop a linear programming model referred to as a security trade-off(ST)model.Next,we develop an analysis framework for the ST model, and solve the ST model on an IoT simulation platform.Last,we reveal the effect of some factors on the maximum combined detection rate through theoretical analysis.Simulations show that the ADS management scheme can mitigate the data unavailability loss caused by the high false positive rates in ADS. 展开更多

The automatic collection of power grid situation information, along with real-time multimedia interaction between the front and back ends during the accident handling process, has generated a massive amount of power grid data. While wireless communication offers a convenient channel for grid terminal access and data transmission, it is important to note that the bandwidth of wireless communication is limited. Additionally, the broadcast nature of wireless transmission raises concerns about the potential for unauthorized eavesdropping during data transmission. To address these challenges and achieve reliable, secure, and real-time transmission of power grid data, an intelligent security transmission strategy with sensor-transmission-computing linkage is proposed in this paper. The primary objective of this strategy is to maximize the confidentiality capacity of the system. To tackle this, an optimization problem is formulated, taking into consideration interruption probability and interception probability as constraints. To efficiently solve this optimization problem, a low-complexity algorithm rooted in deep reinforcement learning is designed, which aims to derive a suboptimal solution for the problem at hand. Ultimately, through simulation results, the validity of the proposed strategy in guaranteed communication security, stability, and timeliness is substantiated. The results confirm that the proposed intelligent security transmission strategy significantly contributes to the safeguarding of communication integrity, system stability, and timely data delivery. 展开更多

Intelligent traffic control requires accurate estimation of the road states and incorporation of adaptive or dynamically adjusted intelligent algorithms for making the decision. In this article, these issues are handled by proposing a novel framework for traffic control using vehicular communications and Internet of Things data. The framework integrates Kalman filtering and Q-learning.Unlike smoothing Kalman filtering, our data fusion Kalman filter incorporates a process-aware model which makes it superior in terms of the prediction error.Unlike traditional Q-learning,our Q-learning algorithm enables adaptive state quantization by changing the threshold of separating low traffic from high traffic on the road according to the maximum number of vehicles in the junction roads. For evaluation, the model has been simulated on a single intersection consisting of four roads:east, west, north, and south.A comparison of the developed adaptive quantized Q-learning(AQQL)framework with state-of-the-art and greedy approaches shows the superiority of AQQL with an improvement percentage in terms of the released number of vehicles of AQQL is 5%over the greedy approach and 340%over the state-of-the-art approach.Hence,AQQL provides an effective traffic control that can be applied in today’s intelligent traffic system. 展开更多

The Internet of Things(IoT)has revolutionized how we interact with and gather data from our surrounding environment.IoT devices with various sensors and actuators generate vast amounts of data that can be harnessed to derive valuable insights. The rapid proliferation of Internet of Things(IoT)devices has ushered in an era of unprecedented data generation and connectivity. These IoT devices, equipped with many sensors and actuators, continuously produce vast volumes of data. However, the conventional approach of transmitting all this data to centralized cloud infrastructures for processing and analysis poses significant challenges. However, transmitting all this data to a centralized cloud infrastructure for processing and analysis can be inefficient and impractical due to bandwidth limitations, network latency, and scalability issues. This paper proposed a Self-Learning Internet Traffic Fuzzy Classifier(SLItFC)for traffic data analysis. The proposed techniques effectively utilize clustering and classification procedures to improve classification accuracy in analyzing network traffic data.SLItFC addresses the intricate task of efficiently managing and analyzing IoT data traffic at the edge.It employs a sophisticated combination of fuzzy clustering and self-learning techniques, allowing it to adapt and improve its classification accuracy over time. This adaptability is a crucial feature, given the dynamic nature of IoT environments where data patterns and traffic characteristics can evolve rapidly. With the implementation of the fuzzy classifier, the accuracy of the clustering process is improvised with the reduction of the computational time.SLItFC can reduce computational time while maintaining high classification accuracy. This efficiency is paramount in edge computing, where resource constraints demand streamlined data processing.Additionally,SLItFC’s performance advantages make it a compelling choice for organizations seeking to harness the potential of IoT data for real-time insights and decision-making.With the Self-Learning process, the SLItFC model monitors the network traffic data acquired from the IoT Devices. The Sugeno fuzzy model is implemented within the edge computing environment for improved classification accuracy.Simulation analysis stated that the proposed SLItFC achieves 94.5%classification accuracy with reduced classification time. 展开更多

Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is a new system that enables individual vehicles to connect with nearby vehicles, people, transportation infrastructure, and networks, thereby realizing amore intelligent and efficient transportationsystem. The movement of vehicles and the three-dimensional (3D) nature of the road network cause the topologicalstructure of IoV to have the high space and time complexity.Network modeling and structure recognition for 3Droads can benefit the description of topological changes for IoV. This paper proposes a 3Dgeneral roadmodel basedon discrete points of roads obtained from GIS. First, the constraints imposed by 3D roads on moving vehicles areanalyzed. Then the effects of road curvature radius (Ra), longitudinal slope (Slo), and length (Len) on speed andacceleration are studied. One of the major challenges arising in internet of military things(IoMT)is accommodating massive connectivity while providing guaranteed quality of service(QoS)in terms of ultra-high reliability. In this regard, this paper presents a class of code-domain nonorthogonal multiple accesses(NOMAs)for uplink ultra reliable networking of massive IoMT based on tactical datalink such as Link-16 and joint tactical information distribution system(JTIDS).In the considered scenario,a satellite equipped with Nr antennas servers K devices including vehicles, drones, ships, sensors, handset radios, etc.Nonorthogonal coded modulation,a special form of multiple input multiple output(MIMO)-NOMA is proposed. The discussion starts with evaluating the output signal to interference-plus-noise(SINR)of receiver filter, leading to the unveiling of a closed-form expression for overloading systems as the number of users is significantly larger than the number of devices admitted such that massive connectivity is rendered. The expression allows for the development of simple yet successful interference suppression based on power allocation and phase shaping techniques that maximizes the sum rate since it is equivalent to fixed-point programming as can be proved. The proposed design is exemplified by nonlinear modulation schemes such as minimum shift keying(MSK)and Gaussian MSK(GMSK),two pivotal modulation formats in IoMT standards such as Link-16 and JITDS.Numerical results show that near capacity performance is offered.Fortunately, the performance is obtained using simple forward error corrections(FECs)of higher coding rate than existing schemes do,while the transmit power is reduced by 6 dB.The proposed design finds wide applications not only in IoMT but also in deep space communications, where ultra reliability and massive connectivity is a keen concern. 展开更多
