The Translation of Allusions in Political Discourse:An Intertextuality Perspective

drawn from ancient classics are the treasures of traditional Chinese culture.The allusions used in Xi Jinping:The Governance of China illustrate a distinctive feature of political discourse,and the publication of its English version provides a valuable opportunity for the study of allusions in translated political discourse.With the English translations of 241 allusions collected from two volumes of the book,we classified these allusions into three categories of history,culture,and literature based on their original sources.Then we analyzed the strategies used in translating the allusions,and provided typical examples to illustrate the use of such translation strategies for each category.Finally,we tried to account for the use of these strategies in light of the intertextuality theory.

T.S.Eliot was a leader of the Modernist movement in poetry.His early poem The Love Song of J.Alfred Prufrock reveals the disappointment,loss,confusion and lack of faith that prevailed in Western society after the World WarⅠ.In this paper,the text of Love Song will be assessed from the perspective of intertextuality through the connection of the fantasy world and the disconnection of the real world.

Interpretation of absurdity by intertextuality： Comments on Donald Barthelme＇s The glass mountain

The paper focuses on the analysis of the intertexts to show the reality hidden inside Barthelme＇s The glass mountain. Barthelme is a representative of postmodernism. He employs typical writing skills, such as collage, fragments and discontinuous narratives, in The glass mountain to illustrate absurdity in the text. As a centerpiece of postmodernism, this fiction can be correctly interpreted by the way of intertextuality, which is a key to reveal the text＇s absurdity. Through such comparison, readers can understand that the purpose of absurd writing is to demonstrate reality in the modern world.

“There is Always The Other Side”: Deconstruction of English Identity and Masculinity——Intertextuality between Wide Sargasso Sea and Jane Eyre

Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea is the classic revisionary novella of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. It rewrites the tragic story of Mr. Rochester's voiceless and lunatic ex-wife, Berthe Mason. This paper turns to the intertextual relationship between the two texts and argues that the subversive rewriting of Wide Sargasso Sea destabilizes and deconstructs Mr. Rochester's English identity and masculinity, which are manifestly presented in the pre-text. It therefore renders the young Mr. Rochester problematic and insufficient, reveals"the other side"of the story and articulately tells the truth about who is really the mad one.

Intertextuality Revisited:Reflections on Subject in Process,Textual Analysis and Reading/Writing Behavior in Cyberspace

Often regarded as one crucial concept in the current of poststructrualistic thought,intertextuality is influential with regard to its application in discursive perspective and literary criticism.This paper argues that the notion should also be understood in the theoretical backdrop of how the concept of subject is constructed in the 1960s.Two critics are specifically mentioned in the discussion:Julia Kristeva’s psychoanalytic understanding of the subject in process that stresses the transpositions of signs in both textual and contextual meanings complicates the once delimited register of textuality,while Roland Barthes,with his claim of the demise of the author,appeals for a reevaluation of the conventional grasp of the idea of the writer and the reader,and their relations with the text.This paper will conclude with one of the most significant derivations of intertextuality—hypertextuality.Relevant to how modern subjects in the era of digitalization read and write,this latter concept materializes,in cyberspace,the documents of printed media,and substantially demonstrates the liquification of information on the Internet.

This paper analysed The Sound and the Fury with the theory of intertextuality, with the aim of going back tointersubjectivity, as promoted by Mikhail Bakhtin. Drawing insight from Susan Sontag’s opinion on“interpretation”, the author highlights the importance of openness and indeterminacy, as well as the significance ofthe “form”. ＂Historical Rewriting＂ and ＂Alternative Fairy Tales＂ in Contemporary Vietnamese Prose： Intertextuality or Incredulity Towards Grand Narratives

At the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century, Vietnamese literature witnessed unprecedented innovations in the aesthetic thinking of writers and the narrative structure of their works. One of the most interesting manifestations of this new movement was not merely the introduction of new aesthetic materials and factors, but the adoption and positive ＂reprocessing＂ of traditional factors---especially historical factors and folk narrative factors. Based on intertextual theory, we would like to address the strong penetration, reproduction, and transformation of some folk storytelling models and historical materials in Vietnamese literature since 1986. Two corresponding phenomena we examine are ＂historical rewriting＂ and ＂alternative fairy tales＂--as part of the whole process of incredulity towards grand narratives and postmodernism in the contemporary Vietnamese prose.

Subversion of Patriarchy： Intertextuality in Carol Ann Duffy＇s The WorM＇s Wife

The WorM＇s Wife （1999）, written by Carol Ann Duffy, who is the first woman and first openly LGBT person appointed Britain＇s poet Laureate, is a collection of poems which makes full use of intertextuality to show Duffy＇s subversion to patriarchy. In this collection, histories and myths are parodied, quoted, alluded and even rewritten. Women in her poems are given chances to speak out for themselves, which can be seen as a form of resistance against patriarchy. In this article, constitutive intertextuality as well as manifest intertextuality like parody, quotation and allusion in The WorM＇s Wife will be discussed specifically. By analyzing how those intertextual features are adopted as a form of resistance against patriarchy, this article aims to help readers form a better perception of the feminism Duffy raises, and tries to help more women who are being suppressed by men, to find and reconstruct their identities.

The intertextuality of argumentation:a semiotic approach to academic writing in higher education

The importance of argumentation in academic writing,while historically recognised,has arguably lost prominence alongside the rapid expansion of higher education since the early 1990s in the UK.This has been exacerbated by an increasingly prevalent technological intervention in teaching and learning processes.With this as a background,this article presents a semiotic analysis of student dissertation extracts to illustrate the role of intertextuality in governing interpretative,evaluative,and concluding propositions in argumentation.Each proposition is perceived as indexed to syntactical compositionality by which a previous proposition elicits a present one that awaits a future one,thus forming a line of argument.The analysis teases out what is at stake concerning the interdependence of signifying codes in textual relations and functions.This brings into view a network of sign actions that lends itself to instances of signification in mediating and coordinating propositions in argumentation.The article concludes with reflection on the medium of English as a lingua franca for studies in higher education,highlighting a semiotic understanding of the intertextuality of argumentation in academic writing.

The Generative Mechanism of Online Narratives and the Intertextuality of Their Group Communication

The complexity of online narratives and their important influence on events,attitudes,and emotions in society make visible certain limitations in the explication of such narratives found in traditional narrative theory.Their generative mechanism provides the logical starting point for understanding online communication.Event correlatives,text assemblage and specific texts,as the organic structure of online narratives,shape the intertextual existence and dynamic accumulation of the online text.A universal multidirectional co-construction forms around event correlatives and between specific texts and the pre-text,post-text and synchronous text within the text assemblage,while the textual object,the communicating subject and the online group communication context together build up the interpretive system of online narrative meanings.The generative mechanism and vitality of online narratives not only provide guarantees for the active nature of online communication,but also become a huge variable in social development,profoundly influencing social communication and even our way of thinking.

Generic Intertextuality： A Case Study of the English Translations of San Guo Yan Yi

In translation practice, transformation often happens at the linguistic and semantic levels since translation between two different languages inevitably entails changes to a text. This transformation is sometimes one of genre, for example, from novel genre of the original text to drama genre of the translated text. This paper takes the English translations of San Guo Yan Y/, a classic Chinese historical novel originally composed in the fourteenth century, as its case study as some early excerpted versions are in prose, verse, drama, textbook and other genres. Two partial translations are analysed in detail： one that has been retranslated as drama and the other as a collection of fairy tales. The classic interpretation of intertextuality （mosaic relations between texts） is thus extended in this paper to the level of genre where genre traditions play a role in spelling out the connections between texts. Moreover, this research may contribute to our further understanding of the symmetry between Chinese and Western literary traditions in genre.

Temporal and Narrative Features of Ian McEwan＇s and Joe Wright＇s Atonement

The paper deals with temporal and narrative properties of Ian McEwan＇s （2001） and Joe Wright＇s （2007） Atonement. In order to show continuity with his other works, four of McEwan＇s novels--The lnnocent （1990）, Amsterdam （1999）, Saturday （2006）, and On Chesil Beach （2008）, have been analyzed before elaborating the novel and film adaptation of Atonement （2007）. Apart from the narratological analysis, McEwan＇s layered works lend themselves to different kinds of readings, and the authors have used the theoretical notions of Immanuel Kant （1952） as well as concepts derived from the postmodem philosophical movement. The aim of the paper is to show how the chronotopical and intertextual nature of the literary original finds a worthy equivalent in the film version, proving the feasibility of a successful intermedial transfer of a complex narrative structure

On the Translation of Intertextully-constructed Texts A Case Study——Nian Nu Jiao.Memories of the Past at Red Cliff

The introduction of intertextuality to translation studies has provided a new perspective to approach the translation procedure as well as the translators’ role.This essay ventures to compare the four English versions of Su Shi’ s Nian Nu Jiao:Memories of the Past at Red Cliff in terms of different solutions to intertextual associations and makes tentative assumptions about the translators’ role in the translation procedure of intertextuality-loaded texts.
