They are either assimilated by other strong nations or shut up deep in the mountains, living a slash and burn way of living. Even if there are some ancient nations that have survived and made some progress, they did so with great difficulty. Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, Greece and Persia all are proud of their glorious past and are ambitious for national revival. But the path is not smooth. The Jewish nation, however, is an exception. What is the secret of its survival and seemingly sudden revival?展开更多

The first half of the paper traces the history of the idea from the Biblical notion of human beings created "in the image of God" through medieval interpretations of that phrase, and the implications of those traditions for conceptualizing Jewish-gentile relations, and in particular, the "humanity" of gentiles. The second half of the paper treats a very different construction of Jewish-gentile relations by looking at the phenomenon of inter-cultural adaptation and exchange as it has shaped Jewish diasporic culture; this discussion focuses upon one extreme case of Jewish-gentile syncretism, the medieval Kaifeng Jewish community in China.展开更多

Leaves of Corchorus olitorius have been found to have high level of phytochemicals: flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins, and saponins that possess strong radical scavenging activity and antioxidant power. In the arid and semi-arid areas of the world, drought is the main limiting factor affecting plant productivity and influences almost all aspects of plant biology. Water stress deficit is known to cause oxidative stress condition that has generally been reported to elevate phenolic antioxidants in various crops including Jew’s mallow. On the other hand, fertilization is crucial for crop management and high yield, it also affects nutritional value of the food plants. Nitrogen (N) fertilization affects health and nutritional value, including mineral content, fatty acid profile, anti-oxidative capacity and polyphenol levels and composition. The possible effects of fertilization should be considered when deciding on fertilization regime, to optimize both plant physiology, productivity and food-related effects. Nitrogen is an important element for Jew’s mallow production since it responds well to it. However, appropriate amounts of nutrients need to be provided to crops at the right time to favor both crop growth, yield and quality. Different reports confirmed that addition or increase of N, negatively affects the total phenolics and total flavonoids, and reduces accumulation of defense-related secondary metabolites resulting in lower oxidative capacity. Increased secondary metabolite production during water deficit and low nitrogen in the soil has been reported as a stress mechanism by most plants. However, further research is required to explore the biochemical response of Jew’s mallow to water deficit and nitrogen fertilization.展开更多

Many of these researches focus primarily on Jewish or Italians, but rarely address at Italian Jews as a whole, and, in their relation with Italian American and Jews. One of the reasons of this paucity of studies, might be the little number of Italian Jews who immigrated to the United States, especially in New York in the 1930s and 1940s, that drove several scholars not to pay really attention to this tiny group in ignoring their presence. Thus, this article aims to investigate through some memoirs, interviews and autobiographies the life of Italian Jews who were living in New York and the Metropolitan area during and after War World II, with particular emphasis to those who were born there in these years and their formation of an American identity. Most geo-spatial studies regarding inter-ethnic relations are single dimensional, focusing on residential segregation assuming its association to the social domain. We argue that in the globalizing world daily activity spaces, social networks and influences on everyday life conditions are rooted in growing horizons around residential location weakening the power of residential location to dictate life conditions. Hence we suggest employing a multi-dimensional approach. Specifically, we explore the associations among residential spaces (relating to Arab residents of: purely Arab localities; mixed-Jewish-Arab cities, and Jewish cities); main activity spaces (commuters to Jewish areas and localists--people staying mostly in the Arab localities) and social integration (social networks; repertoire of identities; attitudes toward integration and knowledge of Hebrew). The data incorporate tracking the movements of 177 responders for a week (using a GPS logger) and in-depth interviews, which were analyzed quantitatively. Core findings suggest that both residential place and activity spaces affect social integration, however, the locality type has a greater affect. In addition, we identified four integration sorts according to kinds of municipality, activity spaces, and integration measures: (1) segregated localists living in Arab municipalities; (2) commuters living in Arab localities characterized by limited integration; (3) Arabs residing in Jewish cities that succeeded economically but are characterized by limited social integration, and (4) those living in mixed cities which enjoy the highest, yet limited integration level.展开更多

One such issue is the "identity crisis" also known as the question of "Who is a Jew?". This is a thorny complex problem, and one which has not yet been awarded a clear-cut constitutional solution. For example, it continues to be debated whether the religious definition should be the decisive factor, that is, should a Jew defined as an individual born to a mother who is Jewish or has been converted according to halacha, or whether Israeli identity is the more critical element and whether any individual born in or immigrated to Israel who served in the army, works and pays taxes in Israel, and identifies with the state's values should be identified as a Jew? In this paper, the author wishes to focus on equally complicated issue, although one has attracted less attention. This is the issue of halachic polarization or extremism that characterizes Judaism in modem Israel. Research in recent years has shown us that smoking and second hand smoking can cause many diseases1. As a result of the understanding of the results of smoking, the house of legislator in Israel decided to legislate a law that people under the age of 18 cannot smoke and, a couple of years later, it decided to ban smoking in public places. The problem begins when the law is affecting the person's autonomy and the person's culture. More than four decades ago when the smoking habit began in Israel, no one knew what the influence would be. Now, although that information is available, the orthodox community in Israel is not exposed to the knowledge. Smoking in this community begins from Purima or from the Bar-Mitzvah3 and from the will of the young orthodox to rebel. This law raises a question: Is it ethical to deprive the young orthodox of the right to smoke? Alternatively, is there a better way to stop the orthodox from smoking than only the regulation? In this paper, the author will try to show that regulation alone will not help in the orthodox community, and we need to think on more options to make the orthodox more informed to smoking problems. The author thinks that the best way will be to educate the orthodox community from young age.展开更多

文摘Shylock is one of the most controversial figures created by William Shakespeare in The Merchant of Venice. Whether he is a comic villain or a tragic hero kindles heated discussion among Shakespearean critics. In my article, I do not simply classify him as comic or tragic figure. 文摘Thousands of years ago,the Jews were forced to leave their homeland and began to live an exiled life and gradually melted into other neighboring peoples. However, they were not welcomed by others. For thousands of years,Jews' "Bible" has become a source of literary and artistic creation, but the image of Jews were excluded from the literary and artistic creation, even if there were some occasions, they were but described as autistic Misers or loan shark.Shakespeare is one of the most outstanding writers;he described many people from all walks of life in his works, the Jews, also included.Based on the corpus of Shakespeare's works,we can see that most adjectives used by Shakespeare to modify the word "Jew"are derogative words. Therefore,we can prove that anti-Semitism does exist in Shakespeare's works.
文摘The character of Shylock in the Merchant of Venice is both intriguing and compelling. Hateful and greedy as he is on the onehand, yet suffered and pathetic on the other. Shakespeare is quite considerate in creating the character. This paper explores the possibili-ties behind Shakespeare, contradictory construction of Shylock.
文摘Compared with the other characters in The Merchant of Venice,Shylock seems to be totally an outsider and alien of Venice which is because he is considered to be the“Other”in the eyes of the other Venetians as a result of his identity a Jew as well as his occupation as a usurer, both of which are despised and degraded at the Elizabethan times.
