Nowadays,an increasing number of ships and marine structures are manufactured and inevitably operated in rough sea.As a result,some phenomena related to the violent fluid-elastic structure interactions(e.g.,hydrodynam...Nowadays,an increasing number of ships and marine structures are manufactured and inevitably operated in rough sea.As a result,some phenomena related to the violent fluid-elastic structure interactions(e.g.,hydrodynamic slamming on marine vessels,tsunami impact on onshore structures,and sloshing in liquid containers)have aroused huge challenges to ocean engineering fields.In this paper,the moving particle semi-implicit(MPS)method and finite element method(FEM)coupled method is proposed for use in numerical investigations of the interaction between a regular wave and a horizontal suspended structure.The fluid domain calculated by the MPS method is dispersed into fluid particles,and the structure domain solved by the FEM method is dispersed into beam elements.The generation of the 2D regular wave is firstly conducted,and convergence verification is performed to determine appropriate particle spacing for the simulation.Next,the regular wave interacting with a rigid structure is initially performed and verified through the comparison with the laboratory experiments.By verification,the MPS-FEM coupled method can be applied to fluid-structure interaction(FSI)problems with waves.On this basis,taking the flexibility of structure into consideration,the elastic dynamic response of the structure subjected to the wave slamming is investigated,including the evolutions of the free surface,the variation of the wave impact pressures,the velocity distribution,and the structural deformation response.By comparison with the rigid case,the effects of the structural flexibility on wave-elastic structure interaction can be obtained.展开更多

Two-dimensional (2D) and three- dimensional (3D) finite element method (FEM) and 2D distinct element method (DEM) with particles were used. The main objective for the large scale in situ experiment is to investigate the yielding strength of crystalline rock and the formation of the excavation disturbed/damaged zone (EDZ) during excavation of two boreholes, pressurizing of one of the boreholes and heating. For the DEM simulations, the heat flow algorithm was newly introduced into the original code. The calculated stress, displacement and temperature distributions were compared with the ones obtained from in situ measurements and FEM simulations. A parametric study for initial microcracks was also performed to reproduce the spalling phenomena observed in the APSE.展开更多

The convergent ability under different prestress and different load types is investigated. Then the calculated deformations are compared with the experimental values. The results convince that the CI of FEM is suitable for the simulation of energy coupling and transformation mechanism of the GMM. At last, the output deformation properties are studied under different input currents, showing that there is a good compromise between good linearity and large strain under the prestress 6 MPa.展开更多

During computing, the effect of the relaxed factors to the convergence speed of the iterative method has been discussed. A comprehensive electric-thermal-mechanical numerical simulation was performed to quantitatively simulate the processes of projection welding by using a coupled finite element method. Numerousmo...Damage caused by frost heave leads to costly maintenance in cold regions, like Hokkaido, Japan. Therefore, thestudy of the frost mechanism with experimental and numerical methods has been of great interest. Numerousmodels have been developed to describe the freezing process of saturated soil, which differs from the partiallysaturated conditions in the field. In fact, most subsurface soils are unsaturated. The freezing process of partiallysaturated soils is more complex than saturated soils, as the governing equations show strongly nonlinear characteristics. This study proposes a thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled model considering the heat transfer, waterinfiltration, and deformation of partially saturated soil to reproduce the freezing process of partially saturatedfrost susceptible soils distributed in Hokkaido. This model better considers the water-ice phase change and soilfreezing characteristic curve (SFCC) during freezing under field conditions. The results from the multiphysicssimulations agree well with the frost heave and water migration data from frost heave tests of Touryo soil andFujinomori soil. In addition, this study discussed the influence of the various factors on frost heave amount,including temperature gradients, overburden pressures, water supply conditions, cooling rates, and initial saturation. The simulation results indicate that the frost heave ratio is proportional to the initial degree of saturationand is inversely proportional to the cooling rate and overburden pressure.Moreover, simulation under the open system generates much more frost heave than under the closed system.Finally, the main features of the proposed model are revealed by simulating a closed-system frost heave test. Thesimulation results indicate that the proposed model adequately captures the coupling characteristics of water andice redistribution, temperature development, hydraulic conductivity, and suction in the freezing process. Togetherwith the decreased hydraulic conductivity, the increased suction controls the water flow in the freezing zone. Theinflow water driven by cryogenic suction gradient feeds the ice formation, leads to a rapid increase in total watercontent, expanding the voids that exceed the initial porosity and contributing to the frost heave.展开更多
