This paper explores the integration of Chinese culture into language education for German students at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology(USST).Focusing on USST’s Chinese curriculum and pedagogical strategies,the study emphasizes the importance of cultural immersion,experiential learning,and authentic materials.Drawing on Byram’s Intercultural Communicative Competence(ICC)model,the Cultural Studies Approach,and Task-Based Language Teaching(TBLT),the paper presents a case study on incorporating Chinese calligraphy into regular classes.This hands-on approach not only enriches cultural understanding but also enhances language skills.The findings stress the need for tailored,multifaceted pedagogical approaches to prepare international students for cross-cultural interactions in a globalized context. 展开更多

“Sapir-Whorf hypothesis"holds that human thoughts are shaped by their native languages,and speakers of different languages think differently relevantly.The hypothesis is controversial partly because it seems to ... “Sapir-Whorf hypothesis"holds that human thoughts are shaped by their native languages,and speakers of different languages think differently relevantly.The hypothesis is controversial partly because it seems to deny the possibility of a general principle for human cognition,and partly because some findings taken to support it have not reliably replicated.The author argued that considering this hypothesis through the lens of probabilistic inference has the potential to figure out both issues,at least with respect to certain prominent findings in the two languages—Chinese and English.After exploring on the inner relationship among language,thought and culture with the comparison between English and Chinese based on a series of examples including“numbers,Wuhan dialect and some different understandings of idioms”,the author made an inference that language can somewhat affect human thought under the different culture contexts.Besides,it also provides some reference for educators to take in-depth studies on the relationship among language,thought and culture,which is vitally significant for ESL educators and learners. 展开更多

As early as in ancient Greece, someone put forward that thought was a silent language, language and thought could not be separated, and thought was a part of language. However, oth-ers argue that language is a sign of thought and should not be confused with thought.Until the 20th century, researchers represented by Sapir-Whorf put forward the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which believe that language has a direct impact on thought, and thought varies with language. This paper advances an approach to culture and language instruction through the theoretical construct of the 3Ps (Products, Practices, Perspectives), combined with an inquiry-based approach utilizing the theory on stages of second language acquisition. Culture elements, when embodied in a properly developed and organized curriculum can be systematically implemented all along the different phases of language growth. Mastery of a language is not simply mastery of vocabulary as well as grammar and spelling rules. The most successful language learners learn both culture and language together. The conceptualizations provided by research, although at times conflicting, form a useful foundation for language teaching that provides a deeper and a more enriching human experience. Making culture the core in a language class is akin to asserting the obvious (Furstenberg, 2010);they are two flip sides of the same coin. With its focus on revisiting the role of culture in the FL Classroom, the paper seems to fall into the same category - affirming the tried and true, but like Furstenberg, the author believes there is good reason to re-consider the possibility of closing the language and culture gap. 展开更多

From ancient to modern times,either in East or West,people always attach great importance to politeness. To save face of the speaker or the hearer,politeness is of considerable practical significance in the conversation. As a matter of fact,its value can never be underestimated. However,due to different historical,lingual and cultural backgrounds,different societies may have different criteria to politeness. And this leads to some problems such as misunderstandings and embarrassments in cross-cultural or intercultural communication. In order to solve these problems,many scholars and linguists at home and abroad have proposed different principles of politeness so far. The author aims to make a comparative study on politeness principles between Chinese and English language and cultures. In recent years,it has become a hot topic for researchers to explore the relationships between language and culture,language and translation,or culture and translation.Indeed,the three aspects are inseparable.Language is the carrier of culture and also restricted by culture.Translation mostly takes place between languages and it is a kind of cross-linguistic and intercultural communicative activity.While translating,it is necessary to understand thoroughly the two languages,but also two cultures and cultural differences between them.In this paper,I firstly give a general review on both the conception of language,culture and translation and their relationship and then discussed the interaction and blending separately from the two phenomena of culture-orientation in translation and translation under culture context.Since culture is transmitted mostly by language,cultural elements and factors should be taken into consideration in translation practices.To achieve the goal of translation in a real sense,translation practices should be based on the principle of processing the discourse of source language and target language under the perspective of its cultural context. 展开更多

Different cultures may conflict with each other, so a literal translation is not always the closest to the original meaning. Culture differences add difficulties to translation. That's why translation plays an important role in the different languages' communication. It is not because translation is the transformation of language but also because it interprets culture. In the development of intercultural communication, translation has its undeniable mission. However, there appears a phenomenon in the highly advanced society that people are using more and more methods instead of translating to help communication. Naturally, people doubt whether the existence of translation is necessary; that is the key points of this thesis.
