It is an aromatic shrub with multiple stems growing 30 to 60 cm tall. It is native to Asia, Europe and Mediterranean regions and grows on hilly areas and coastlines. The evergreen leaves are narrow and long and covered in fine hairs, which normally contain the essential oils. The leaves are also pinnately toothed, or pinnate. The plant blooms between April and June, and flowers are purple produced on violet bracts. All parts of the plant have a strong and scented odor and a bitter taste. The flowers and leaves are used as an herbal medicine. Lavender essential oil is extracted by distilling flowers and leaves, Essential oil has higher levels of linalyl acetate (40%), butyric acid, propionic acid, valeric acid, free linalool. Considering the lack of information about lavender tissue culture, the current experiment' was aimed to study the effect of phytohormones on lavender callus induction and organogenesis. The lavender explants (leaf and apical meristem) were cultured onto MS media supplemented with different phytohormones. According to the observations, 5 mg/L NAA and 5 mg/L KIN treatment caused leaf and root formation, which were originally derived t^om dense and green calli. The MS medium containing 5 mg/L IBA and 5 mg/L Kin was effective just on leafy explants so that explants formed into leaves after callus induction. Application of 5 mg/L NAA and 5 mg/L BAP on apical meristem explants produced shoot and root after callus induction. However, complete plants were produced after sub-culturing the samples. In conclusion, MS medium supplemented with 5 mg/L NAA and 5 mg/L BAP was selected as the best medium for lavender tissue culture.展开更多

The soil as a natural resource is polluted by cadmium as a heavy metals from the different sources such as phosphorus fertilizers. The aim of this study was to investigate the biochar effect on absorption factor (AF) and translocation factor (TF) as the phytoremediation factors at different cadmium concentrations by lavender plant. The experiment was conducted in 3 × 4 factorial design including biochar treatment at the volumetric percentage ratio of 0%, 20% and 40% v/v and cadmium treatment at 0, 50, 100 and 150 mg Cd⋅kg−1 soil under greenhouse condition. The data analysis indicated that the biochar and cadmium treatments significantly (p ≤0.05) affected the plant dry biomass. The biochar addition caused to decrease the cadmium content of the root tissue. Biochar decreased cadmium uptake by lavender plant and also cadmium was accumulated by the root tissue and was prevented to translocate cadmium into the shoot tissue. Increasing cadmium concentration in soil caused an increase in cadmium adsorption factor however there was a significant decrease for translocation factor. It can be concluded to consider the possibility of planting the lavender with biochar application to amend the cadmium contaminated soils.展开更多

During the last ten years various multiblocks methods were developed such as Concatenated PLS, Hierarchical-PLS (H-PLS), and MultiBlock-PLS (MB-PLS). These three algorithms were used to analyze 55 lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil samples. The results obtained were compared to the ones obtained respectively in NIR and MIR ranges. The accuracies of the models depend on the spectroscopic technique, pretreatment and the PLS methods. The results showed that the choice of the factor numbers used to build the multiblock models was the most important parameter for the H-PLS and MB-PLS methods.展开更多

Antibacterial activity was assessed by creating of the bacterial growth curve in the liquid medium cultivation and the growth inhibition on the agar plate cultivation. Citronellal, one of compounds in Rosa rugose oil, was used as a positive control for comparison in activity. The results showed that lavender and citronellal flavor (volatile) or oil respectively demonstrated bacteria killing effect in both analytical manners. However, P. aeruginosa resisted bacteria killing potency of lavender (citronellal) oil or oil-emitted flavor. It could be concluded that both lavender oil-emitted flavor and oil showed bacteria killing potency. Lavender oil (or oil-emitted flavor) will be expected to apply for the patient waiting room to disinfect in air along with the mental relaxation of the patient.展开更多

The results show that osmotic stress could reduce the growth rate of lavender, and increase the content of SSC(soluble sugar concentration) to some extent. Compared with control group, the contents of essential oil in flowers and leaves respectively increase by 45.6% and 48.3% in the osmotic stress group induced by 15% PEG-6000. However, the presence of lanthanum can make the contents of essential oil in the flowers and leaves of stressed lavender plants enhance by 19.4% and 18.6%, respectively. Under osmotic stress, the relative contents of four kinds of lavender essential oil compositions of camphor, linalool, linalyl acetate and lavandulol acetate in the lavender flowers were successively 22.63%,0.61%,25.46%,7.03%,and 20.17%,0.62%,20.72%,10.80%,respectively in the presence and absence of lanthanum. The contents of all four main components of lavender essential oils meet the requirements of the national standard under osmotic stress in the presence of lanthanum. However, in the absence of lanthanum, the contents of linalyl acetate and lavandulol acetate does not meet the requirements of the national standard under osmotic stress. Moreover, the contents of five components of borneol, camphor, eudesmol, caryophyllene oxide and bicyclic sesquiphellandrene from the essential oil of lavender leaves are 12.89%, 3.84%, 8.76%, 11.30% and 8.10%, respectively. The total content of above five components accounts for 44.89% of the essential oil of the lavender leaves. Particularly, the borneol content in leaf essential oil is up to 12.89%. It is 125.2 times the amount of borneol in the flower essential oil. In conclusion, the suitable concentration of lanthanum can improve the adaptability of lavender plants, and heighten the content and quality of lavender essential oil to some extent under osmotic stress.展开更多

The ICUs of two educational hospitals in Kerman in Southeastern Iran were the study setting. One hundred and fifty conscious intensive care patients were randomly divided into three groups using a stratified block randomization method. Two groups received aromatherapy with essential oils: one with lavender and the other with C. aurantium;these patients received a 30-minute therapy session using their assigned essential oil on the second day of their intensive care stay. The placebo group used 5 drops of normal saline instead of essential oil during their session.Main outcome measures: Patient’s pain was assessed using a visual analog scale before the aromatherapy intervention, as well as immediately after and one and three hours after intervention. Results: The mean pain score of the lavender group was 40.01 before the aromatherapy intervention and fell to 39.40, 30.60 and 23.68 immediately after the intervention, and at hour one and three postintervention, respectively. The mean pain score of the C. aurantium group was 45.48 before the intervention and was reduced to 32.34 at three hours after the intervention. The mean pain of the placebo group decreased from 42.80 before the intervention to 35.20 at three hours after the intervention. Pain scores of all groups decreased during the study(P < 0.001). The mean pain of the lavender group was significantly lower than that of the placebo group at three hours after the intervention. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that aromatherapy with lavender essential oil reduced pain in conscious ICU patients. Our data could not justify the use of C. aurantium for reducing pain in this population.展开更多

文摘Lavender (L. angustifolia) is a genus of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae. In conclusion, MS medium supplemented with 5 mg/L NAA and 5 mg/L BAP was selected as the best medium for lavender tissue culture.
文摘The contaminated soil has become a global problem for agricultural and environmental scientists. It can be concluded to consider the possibility of planting the lavender with biochar application to amend the cadmium contaminated soils.
文摘Near-infrared and mid-infrared spectroscopies were currently used to analyze natural compounds. The results showed that the choice of the factor numbers used to build the multiblock models was the most important parameter for the H-PLS and MB-PLS methods.
文摘The objective of this study was to test the essential oil-emitted flavor (volatile) of lavender by bacteria killing potency using Escherichia coli, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), enterohemorrhagic E. coli O157:H7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. Lavender oil (or oil-emitted flavor) will be expected to apply for the patient waiting room to disinfect in air along with the mental relaxation of the patient.

文摘The effects of lanthanum on growth, soluble sugar content, essential oil contents and quality were studied in lavender plant(Lavandula Angustifolia Mill, Variety 701) under osmotic stress by means of PEG-6000 solution. In conclusion, the suitable concentration of lanthanum can improve the adaptability of lavender plants, and heighten the content and quality of lavender essential oil to some extent under osmotic stress.

文摘Background: Major depressive disorder(MDD) accompanied by anxious distress is a chronic and disabling disorder. Its conventional drug therapies often have low patient compliance due to drug-related side effects. In Persian medicine, lavender-dodder syrup is one formula often recommended for such disorders. Objective: This study compares the effects of lavender-dodder syrup to the standard drug, citalopram, for treating MDD with anxious distress.Design, setting, participants and intervention: This six-week, double-blind, randomized, clinical trial was carried out in a psychiatric outpatient clinic. During the six-week intervention period, patients in citalopram group received citalopram tablets 20 mg/d plus 5 mL placebo syrup every 12 h;patients in group B received placebo tablets once daily plus 5 mL of lavender-dodder herbal syrup every 12 h.Main outcome measures: Primary outcome measures, depression and anxiety, were evaluated using the Hamilton Depression/Anxiety Rating Scales, and were scored at the beginning of the study and at weeks three and six. Secondary outcome measures including response to treatment and remission rates were also compared between the two groups. Results: Fifty-six participants with MDD and anxious distress were randomly assigned to two groups.Mean depression scores significantly decreased in citalopram and herbal groups at weeks three and six(time effect: P < 0.001), although the observed changes were not significantly different between the groups(intervention effect: P = 0.61). Mean anxiety scores were not significantly different between the two groups at week three(P = 0.75). However, at the end of week six, the observed decrease was significantly higher in the herbal syrup group than the citalopram group(intervention effect: P = 0.007).Conclusion: The herbal syrup is an effective and tolerable supplement for treating MDD with anxious distress.Trial registration number: IRCT2016102430459 N1 on Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials.

文摘Background Neonatal pain may affect long-term neurodevelopment and must be treated.Frenotomy is a painful procedure wherein a common strategy to relieve pain(sucking)cannot be used because the technique is performed on the tongue.Lavender essential oil(LEO)has sedative and antispasmodic properties and has been successfully used to treat pain during heel puncture and vaccination. Our aim was to demonstrate if the use of inhaled LEO is effective in reducing pain during frenotomy in healthy,full-term neonates. Methods We conducted a randomized clinical trial in neonates who underwent a frenotomy between August 2020 and April 2021.We assessed pain using pre and post-procedure heart rate and oxygen saturation, crying time and Neonatal Infant Pain Scale(NIPS)score.Patients with type 3 tongue tie were randomized into the“experimental group”and“control group”.In both groups,we performed swaddling, administered oral sucrose, and let the newborn suck for two minutes. In the experimental group,we also placed a gauze pad with one drop of LEO under the neonate’s nose for two minutes prior to and during the frenotomy. Results We enrolled 142 patients(71 per group). The experimental group showed significantly lower NIPS scores(1.88 vs 2.92)and cried almost half the amount of time(14.8 vs.24.6 seconds,P=0.006).Comparing with the control group,we observed no side effects in either of the groups. Conclusions We observed a significant decrease in crying time and lower NIPS scores in the neonates who received inhaled LEO and underwent a frenotomy for type 3 tongue-ties.Thus,we recommend using inhaled LEO during neonatal frenotomies.
文摘Background: Conscious patients admitted to intensive care units(ICUs) suffer from pain for various reasons, which can affect their recovery process. Objective: The present study compared the effects of aromatherapy with Citrus aurantium and lavender essential oils against placebo for reducing pain in conscious intensive care patients.Design, setting, participants and interventions: This study was a parallel randomized placebo-controlled trial. Our data could not justify the use of C. aurantium for reducing pain in this population.
