Based on the practice of oil and gas exploration in the Huizhou Sag of the Pearl River Mouth Basin, the geochemical indexes of source rocks were measured, the reservoir development morphology was restored, the rocks and minerals were characterized microscopically, the measured trap sealing indexes were compared, the biomarker compounds of crude oil were extracted, the genesis of condensate gas was identified, and the reservoir-forming conditions were examined. On this basis, the Paleogene Enping Formation in the Huizhou 26 subsag was systematically analyzed for the potential of oil and gas resources, the development characteristics of large-scale high-quality conglomerate reservoirs, the trapping effectiveness of faults, the hydrocarbon migration and accumulation model, and the formation conditions and exploration targets of large-and medium-sized glutenite-rich oil and gas fields. The research results were obtained in four aspects.First, the Paleogene Wenchang Formation in the Huizhou 26 subsag develops extensive and thick high-quality source rocks of semi-deep to deep lacustrine subfacies, which have typical hydrocarbon expulsion characteristics of"great oil generation in the early stage and huge gas expulsion in the late stage",providing a sufficient material basis for hydrocarbon accumulation in the Enping Formation.Second, under the joint control of the steep slope zone and transition zone of the fault within the sag,the large-scale near-source glutenite reservoirs are highly heterogeneous, with the development scale dominated hierarchically by three factors(favorable facies zone, particle component, and microfracture). The(subaqueous)distributary channels near the fault system, with equal grains,a low mud content(<5%),and a high content of feldspar composition, are conducive to the development of sweet spot reservoirs.Third, the strike-slip pressurization trap covered by stable lake flooding mudstone is a necessary condition for oil and gas preservation, and the NE and nearly EW faults obliquely to the principal stress have the best control on traps.Fourth, the spatiotemporal configuration of high-quality source rocks, fault transport/sealing,and glutenite reservoirs controls the degree of hydrocarbon enrichment. From top to bottom, three hydrocarbon accumulation units,i.e.low-fill zone, transition zone, and high-fill zone, are recognized. The main area of the channel in the nearly pressurized source-connecting fault zone is favorable for large-scale hydrocarbon enrichment. The research results suggest a new direction for the exploration of large-scale glutenite-rich reservoirs in the Enping Formation of the Pearl River Mouth Basin, and present a major breakthrough in oil and gas exploration. 展开更多

The Faleme River, a West Africa long transboundary stream (625 km) and abundant flow (>1100 million m3) is affected by severe erosion because of mining activities that takes place throughout the riverbed. To preserve this important watercourse and ensure the sustainability of its services, selecting and implementing appropriates restorations techniques is vital. In this context, the purpose of this paper was to present an overview of the actions and techniques that can be implemented for the restoration/rehabilitation of the Faleme. The methodological approach includes field investigation, water sampling, literature review with cases studies and SWOT analysis of the four methods presented: river dredging, constructed wetlands, floating treatment wetlands and chemical precipitation (coagulation and flocculation). The study confirmed the pollution of the river by suspended solids (TSS > 1100 mg/L) and heavy metals such as iron, zinc, aluminium, and arsenic. For the restoration methods, it was illustrated through description of their mode of operation and through some case studies presented, that all the four methods have proven their effectiveness in treating rivers but have differences in their costs, their sustainability (detrimental to living organisms or causing a second pollution) and social acceptance. They also have weaknesses and issues that must be addressed to ensure success of rehabilitation. For the case of the Faleme river, after analysis, floating treatment wetlands are highly recommended for their low cost, good removal efficiency if the vulnerability of the raft and buoyancy to strong waves and flow is under control. 展开更多

A study of toad infestation was carried out from July to December 2022, in the vicinity of the Mfilou and Ngamboulou Rivers, with the aim of determining the prevalence rate of parasitic carriage in these toads. After collecting 289 specimens, all belonging to the Anuran order and Bufonidae family, three species were identified: Sclerophrys camerunensis (Parker, 1936), Sclerophrys regularis (Reuss, 1834) and Sclerophrys sp. The most abundant species were Sclerophrys camerunensis, followed by Sclerophrys regularis. With regard to parasitological aspects, of the 289 specimens collected, 195 were parasitized, i.e. a percentage of 67.47%. The only parasitic species identified was Ascaris sp., which is preferentially located in the intestine. 展开更多

The Xianshuihe-Anninghe fault extends SE–S and constitutes the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. However, the Dadu River which is associated with the fault does not flow following the path, but makes a 90ºturn within a distance of 1 km at Shimian, heading east, and joins the Yangtze River, finally flowing into the East China Sea.Adjacent to the abrupt turn,a low and wide pass near the Daqiao reservoir at Mianning separates the N–S course of the Dadu River from the headwater of the Anning River which then flows south into the Yunnan Province along the Anninghe fault. Therefore, many previous studies assumed southward flow of the paleo-Dadu River from the Shimian to the Anning River. However, evidences for the capture of the integrated N–S paleo-Dadu-Anning River, its timing, and causes are still insufficient. This study explored the paleo-drainage pattern of the Dadu and Anning Rivers based on bulk mineral and geochemical analyses of the large quantities of fluvial/lacustrine sediments along the trunk of the Dadu and Anning Rivers.Similar with sands in the modern Dadu River, the Xigeda sediments also exhibit a granitoid affinity with the bulk major mineral compositions of quartz(>50%),anorthite(about 10%),orthoclase(about 5%),muscovite(about 5%),and clinochlore(about 4%).Correspondingly,bulk major elements show high SiO_(2),with all samples>60%,and some of them>70%,low TiO_(2)(≤0.75%),P_(2)O_(5)(≤0.55%),FeO*(≤5%),and relatively high CaO(1.02%–8.51%),Na_(2)O(1.60%–2.52%),and K_(2)O(2.17%–2.71%),with a uniform REE patterns. Therefore, synthesizing all these results indicate that these lacustrine sediments have similar material sources, which are mainly derived from its course in the Songpan-Ganzi flysch block, implying that the paleo-Dadu originally flowed southward into the Anning River and provided materials to the Xigeda ancient lake. The rearrangement of the paleo-Dadu River appears to be closely related to the locally focused uplift driven by strong activities of the XianshuiheXiaojiang fault system. 展开更多

Rivers are important habitats for wintering waterbirds. However, they are easily influenced by natural and human activities. An important approach for waterbirds to adapt to habitats is adjusting the activity time and energy expenditure allocation of diurnal behavior. The compensatory foraging hypothesis predicts that increased energy expenditure leads to longer foraging time, which in turn increases food intake and helps maintain a constant energy balance. However,it is unclear whether human-disturbed habitats result in increased energy expenditure related to safety or foraging. In this study, the scan sample method was used to observe the diurnal behavior of the wintering Spot-billed Duck(Anas poecilorhyncha) in two rivers in the Xin’an River Basin from October 2021 to March 2022.The allocation of time and energy expenditure for activity in both normal and disturbed environments was calculated. The results showed that foraging accounted for the highest percentage of time and energy expenditure.Additionally, foraging decreased in the disturbed environment than that in the normal environment.Resting behavior showed the opposite trend, while other behaviors were similar in both environments. The total diurnal energy expenditure of ducks in the disturbed environment was greater than that in the normal environment, with decreased foraging and resting time percentage and increased behaviors related to immediate safety(swimming and alert) and comfort. These results oppose the compensatory foraging hypothesis in favor of increased security. The optimal diurnal energy expenditure model included river width and water depth, which had a positive relationship;an increase in either of these two factors resulted in an increase in energy expenditure. This study provides a better understanding of energy allocation strategies underlying the superficial time allocation of wintering waterbirds according to environmental conditions.Exploring these changes can help understand the maximum fitness of wintering waterbirds in response to nature and human influences. 展开更多

Water scarcity and pollution pose a threat to the sustainable development of cities and society. Therefore,it is crucial to analyze the hydrochemical characteristics and carbon dynamics of waterdeficient areas.Taking the Taiyuan section of Fenhe River as the research object,we systematically explored the hydrochemical characteristics of surface water and its evolutionary processes,as well as the ecological effect of algal carbonic anhydrase in carbon cycle using the hydrochemical evolution method and correlation analysis. The ternary diagram demonstrates that the main water chemical type in Fenhe River was SO^(2-)_(4)·Cl^(-)-Na^(+).The Gibbs and end-member diagrams of each ion display that the chemical composition of surface water was mainly controlled by silicate decomposition. The chemical ions originated mainly from dissolution of some minerals, such as plagioclase, halite, dolomite, calcite, and gypsum. The diatoms had a lower CO_(2)requirement because they exhibited a higher abundance at a lower partial pressure of CO_(2)(p CO_(2)).However,high CO_(2)concentration had a positive effect on cyanobacteria, which reduced the active transport of HCO_(3)^(-),saved the energy needed for this part of active transport, and indirectly improved the overall photosynthetic efficiency of algae.Carbonic anhydrase(CA)activity was significantly negatively correlated with p CO_(2)and positively correlated with HCO_(3)^(-)concentration,indicating that CA in water promoted the conversion of CO_(2)to HCO_(3)^(-).The HCO_(3)^(-)generated from this process continued to participate in the erosion of silicate rocks, sequestering CO_(2)in the form of Ca CO_(3),which has a non-negligible impact on the carbon sink in the Fenhe River. These consequences may have important implications for the biogeochemical cycling occurring in urban water. 展开更多

Plate subduction leads to complex exhumation processes on continents. The Huangling Massif lies at the northern margin of the South China Block.Whether the Huangling Massif was exhumed as a watershed of the middle reaches of the Paleo-Yangtze River during the Mesozoic remains under debate. We examined the exhumation history of the Huangling Massif based on six granite bedrock samples, using apatite fission track(AFT)and apatite and zircon(U-Th)/He(AHe and ZHe)thermochronology. These samples yielded ages of 157–132 Ma(ZHe),119–106 Ma(AFT),and 114–72 Ma(AHe),respectively.Thermal modeling revealed that three phases of rapid cooling occurred during the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous, late Early Cretaceous, and Late Cretaceous. These exhumation processes led to the high topographic relief responsible for the emergence of the Huangling Massif. The integrated of our new data with published sedimentological records suggests that the Huangling Massif might have been the watershed of the middle reaches of the Paleo-Yangtze River since the Cretaceous. At that time, the rivers flowed westward into the Sichuan Basin and eastward into the Jianghan Basin. The subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Asian continent in the Mesozoic deeply influenced the geomorphic evolution of the South China Block. 展开更多

In our recent investigations of diatom diversity,we studied three species, namely,Skeletonema costatum,Skeletonema subsalsum, and Skeletonema potamos.Although they have been found frequently in Changjiang(Yangtze)River Basin, their morphological and molecular identification is difficult in taxonomy. Therefore,to integrate morphological and molecular biological approaches,we compared systematically their morphological characters and performed phylogenetic analysis.Twelve strains of Skeletonema were collected and isolated from Shanghai and Jiangsu,China, and their morphological characteristics were examined by light microscopy(LM)and the scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Based on morphological comparison,we determined that S.potamos is easy to distinguish from the other two species. The heavily silicified areolae, undulated or cleft distal ends of terminal fultoportula processes(TFPPs),absence of basal pores of fultoportula processes(FPPs),the rootlike protrusions of FPPs,and no interlocking connection are the stable characteristics that can be used to identify S.potamos.However,there are only two features that can distinguish S.costatum from S.subsalsum, namely the location of terminal rimoportulae(TRPs)and the distal shape of TFPPs.In addition,we amplified and sequenced nine common genetic markers from the strains, from which 101 sequences were obtained, constructed phylogenetic trees based on the nine genes and evaluated that seven genes can be used to identify S.potamos, and revealed that S.subsalsum is the closest known relative of S.costatum, and only ATP synthetase beta-subunit gene(atp B)is able to distinguish them from each other, which strongly support that it is an effective molecular marker for Skeletonema. This work provided a theoretical basis for the taxonomic study of Skeletonema. 展开更多

A sediment core(YJK19-02)collected from the southern outlet of Hangzhou Bay near the Yongjiang River estuary in East China was analyzed for grain size, lignin, bulk elemental composition, stable carbon isotope, and rare earth elements(REEs)to determine the sources and diagenesis of sedimentary organic matter(OM)of the estuary and adjacent areas since the Late Pleistocene.δ^(13)C values(-24.80‰–-23.60‰),total organic carbon/total nitrogen(TOC/TN)molar ratios(8.00–12.14),and light rare earth element/heavy rare earth element ratios(LREE/HREE=8.34–8.91)revealed the predominance of terrestrial sources of OM,mainly from the Changjiang(Yangtze)River. The lignin parameters of syringyl/vanillyl(S/V=0.20–0.73)and cinnamyl/vanillyl(C/V=0.03–0.19)ratios indicate the predominance of nonwoody angiosperms, and the vanillic acid/vanillin ratios[(Ad/Al)_(V)=0.32–1.57]indicate medium to high degrees of lignin degradation. An increasing trend ofΛ(total lignin in mg/100-mg OC)values from ca.14500 a BP to ca.11000 a BP reflected the increase in temperature during the Late Pleistocene. However,a time lag effect of temperature on vegetation abundance was also revealed. The relatively higher and stableΛvalues correspond to the higher temperature during the mid-Holocene from ca.8500 a BP to ca.4500 a BP.Λvalues decreased from ca.4000 a BP to the present, corresponding to historical temperature fluctuations during this time. Our results show that the vegetation abundance in the Yongjiang River Basin since the Late Pleistocene was related to the temperature fluctuation duo to climate change. 展开更多

In the summer of 2022,China(especially the Yangtze River Valley,YRV)suffered its strongest heatwave(HW)event since 1961.In this study,we examined the influences of multiscale variabilities on the 2022 extreme HW in the lower reaches of the YRV,focusing on the city of Shanghai. We found that about 1/3 of the 2022 HW days in Shanghai can be attributed to the long-term warming trend of global warming.During mid-summer of 2022,an enhanced western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH)and anomalous double blockings over the Ural Mountains and Sea of Okhotsk, respectively, were associated with the persistently anomalous high pressure over the YRV,leading to the extreme HW.The Pacific Decadal Oscillation played a major role in the anomalous blocking pattern associated with the HW at the decadal time scale. Also, the positive phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation may have contributed to regulating the formation of the double-blocking pattern.Anomalous warming of both the warm pool of the western Pacific and tropical North Atlantic at the interannual time scale may also have favored the persistency of the double blocking and the anomalously strong WPSH.At the subseasonal time scale, the anomalously frequent phases 2-5 of the canonical northward propagating variability of boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation associated with the anomalous propagation of a weak Madden-Julian Oscillation suppressed the convection over the YRV and also contributed to the HW.Therefore, the 2022 extreme HW originated from multiscale forcing including both the climate warming trend and air-sea interaction at multiple time scales. 展开更多

Natural radionuclides are powerful tools for understanding the sources and fate of suspended particulate matter(SPM).Particulate matter with different particle sizes behaves differently with respect to adsorption and desorption. We analyzed the activi-ties and distribution characteristics of multiple natural radionuclides(238U,226Ra,40K,228Ra,7Be and 210Pbex)on size-fractionated SPM at the Lijin Hydrographic Station(Huanghe or Yellow River)every month over a one-year period. Results showed that medium silt(16–32µm)was the main component. As expected, the activity of each radionuclide decreased with an increase of particle size.We examined the sources of SPM with different particle sizes using activity ratios of 226Ra/238U,228Ra/226Ra,40K/238U and 7Be/210Pbex,and concluded that SPM with different particle sizes originated from different sources. Our results indicate that fine SPM(<32µm)was mainly from the erosion of soil along the lower reaches of the Yellow River, while coarse SPM(>32µm)was mainly derived from resuspension of riverbed sediment.During high runoff periods, the concentration of SPM increased significantly, and the pro-portion of fine particles originating upstream increased.Naturally occurring radioactive isotopes, especially on size-fractionated par-ticles,are therefore seen as useful tracers to understand the sources and behaviors of riverine particles transported from land to sea. 展开更多

Comprehensive research has been implemented to raise the efficiency of the geochemical survey of stream sediments(SSs)that formed under the cryolithogenesis conditions. The authors analysed the composition, structure and specific features of the formation of exogenous anomalous geochemical fields(AGFs)identified through SSs of large river valleys of IV order. In our case, these were the valleys of Maly Ken,Ken and Tap Rivers. These rivers are located in the central and southern parts of the Balygychan-Sugoy trough enclosed in the Magadan region,North-East of Russia. The authors proposed a new technique to sample loose alluvium of SSs in the large river valleys along the profiles. The profiles were located across the valleys. The AGFs of Au,Ag,Pb,Zn,Sn,Bi,Mo and W were studied.Correlations between elements have been established. These elements are the main indicator elements of Au-Ag,Ag-Pb,Sn-Ag,Mo-W and Sn-W mineralization occurring on the sites under study. The results obtained were compared with the results of geochemical surveys of SSs.It is concluded that the AGFs recognized along the profiles reflect the composition and structure of eroded and drained ore zones, uncover completely and precisely the pattern of element distribution in loose sediments of large water flows. The alluvium fraction<0.25 mm seems to be most significant in a practical sense,as it concentrated numerous ore elements.Sampling of this fraction in the river valleys of IV order does not cause any difficulty, for this kind of material is plentiful. The developed technique of alluvium sampling within large river valleys is efficient in searching for diverse mineralization at all stages of prognostic prospecting. It is applicable for geochemical survey of SSs performed at different scales both in the North-East of Russia,as well as other regions with similar climatic conditions, where the SSs are formed under the cryolithogenesis conditions. 展开更多

Lateral intakes are common in rivers. The pump effciency and sediment deposition are determined by the local hydrodynamic characteristics and mainstream division width. The hydraulic characteristics of lateral withdrawal from inclined river slopes at different intake elevations should be investigated.Meanwhile, the division width exhibits significant vertical non-uniformity at an inclined river slope, which should be clarified.Hence,a three-dimensional(3-D)hydrodynamic and particle-tracking model was developed with the Open Source Field Operation and Manipulation(Open FOAM),and the model was validated with physical model tests for 90°lateral withdrawal from an inclined side bank. The flow fields, withdrawal sources, and division widths were investigated with different intake bottom elevations, withdrawal discharges, and main channel velocities. This study showed that under inclined side bank conditions, water entered the intake at an oblique angle, causing significant 3-D spiral flows in the intake rather than two-dimensional closed recirculation.A lower withdrawal discharge,a lower bottom elevation of the intake,or a higher main channel velocity could further strengthen this phenomenon. The average division width and turbulent kinetic energy were smaller under inclined side bank conditions than under vertical bank conditions. With a low intake bottom elevation,a low withdrawal discharge,or a high main channel velocity, the sources of lateral withdrawal were in similar ranges near the local inclined bank in the vertical direction.Under inclined slope conditions, sediment deposition near the intake entrance could be reduced, compared to that under vertical slope conditions. The results provide hydrodynamic and sediment references for engineering designs for natural rivers with inclined terrains. 展开更多

The coupling relationship between shelf-edge deltas and deep-water fan sand bodies is a hot and cutting-edge field of international sedimentology and deep-water oil and gas exploration.Based on the newly acquired high-resolution 3D seismic, logging and core data of Pearl River Mouth Basin(PRMB),this paper dissected the shelf-edge delta to deep-water fan(SEDDF)depositional system in the Oligocene Zhuhai Formation of Paleogene in south subsag of Baiyun Sag,and revealed the complex coupling relationship from the continental shelf edge to deep-water fan sedimentation and its genetic mechanisms. The results show that during the deposition of the fourth to first members of the Zhuhai Formation, the scale of the SEDDF depositional system in the study area showed a pattern of first increasing and then decreasing, with deep-water fan developed in the third to first members and the largest plane distribution scale developed in the late stage of the second member.Based on the development of SEDDF depositional system along the source direction, three types of coupling relationships are divided, namely, deltas that are linked downdip to fans, deltas that lack downdip fans and fans that lack updip coeval deltas, with different depositional characteristics and genetic mechanisms.(1)Deltas that are linked downdip to fans:with the development of shelf-edge deltas in the shelf area and deep-water fans in the downdip slope area, and the strong source supply and relative sea level decline are the two key factors which control the development of this type of source-to-sink(S2S).The development of channels on the continental shelf edge is conducive to the formation of this type of S2S system even with weak source supply and high sea level.(2)Deltas that lack downdip fans:with the development of shelf edge deltas in shelf area, while deep water fans are not developed in the downdip slope area. The lack of“sources”and“channels”,and fluid transformation are the three main reasons for the formation of this type of S2S system.(3)Fans that lack updip coeval deltas:with the development of deep-water fans in continental slope area and the absence of updip coeval shelf edge deltas, which is jointly controlled by the coupling of fluid transformation at the shelf edge and the“channels”in the continental slope area. 展开更多

This study compares the summer atmospheric water cycle, including moisture sources and consumption,in the upstream, midstream, and downstream regions of the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin in the southern Tibetan Plateau. The evolutions of moisture properties under the influence of the westerly and summer southerly monsoon are examined using 5-yr multi-source measurements and ERA5 reanalysis data.Note that moisture consumption in this study is associated with clouds, precipitation, and diabatic heating.Compared to the midstream and downstream regions, the upstream region has less moisture, clouds, and precipitation, where the moisture is brought by the westerly. In early August, the vertical wet advection over this region becomes enhanced and generates more high clouds and precipitation. The midstream region has moisture carried by the westerly in June and by the southerly monsoon from July to August. The higher vertical wet advection maximum here forms more high clouds, with a precipitation peak in early July. The downstream region is mainly affected by the southerly-driven wet advection. The rich moisture and strong vertical wet advection here produce the most clouds and precipitation among the three regions, with a precipitation peak in late June. The height of the maximum moisture condensation is different between the midstream region(325 hPa)and the other two regions(375 hPa),due to the higher upward motion maximum in the midstream region. The diabatic heating structures show that stratiform clouds dominate the upstream region, stratiform clouds and deep convection co-exist in the midstream region, and deep convection systems characterize the downstream region. 展开更多

For regional ecological management,it is important to evaluate the quality of ecosystems and analyze the underlying causes of ecological changes.Using the Google Earth Engine(GEE)platform, the remote sensing ecological index(RSEI)was calculated for the Lijiang River Basin in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region for 1991,2001,2011,and 2021.Spatial autocorrelation analysis was employed to investigate spatiotemporal variations in the ecological environmental quality of the Lijiang River Basin.Furthermore, geographic detectors were used to quantitatively analyze influencing factors and their interaction effects on ecological environmental quality. The results verified that:1)From 1991 to 2021,the ecological environmental quality of the Lijiang River Basin demonstrated significant improvement. The area with good and excellent ecological environmental quality in proportion increased by 19.69%(3406.57 km^(2)),while the area with fair and poor ecological environmental quality in proportion decreased by 10.76%(1860.36 km^(2)).2)Spatially,the ecological environmental quality of the Lijiang River Basin exhibited a pattern of low quality in the central region and high quality in the periphery.Specifically, poor ecological environmental quality characterized the Guilin urban area,Pingle County, and Lingchuan County.3)From 1991 to 2021,a significant positive spatial correlation was observed in ecological environmental quality of the Lijiang River Basin.Areas with high-high agglomeration were predominantly forests and grasslands, indicating good ecological environmental quality, whereas areas with low-low agglomeration were dominated by cultivated land and construction land, indicating poor ecological environmental quality.4)Annual average precipitation and temperature exerted the most significant influence on the ecological environmental quality of the basin, and their interactions with other factors had the great influence. This study aimed to enhance understanding of the evolution of the ecological environment in the Lijiang River Basin of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and provide scientific guidance for decision-making and management related to ecology in the region. 展开更多

With the loss of substantial natural wetlands in coastal zones, artificial wetlands provide alternative habitats for many shorebirds.Scientific management of artificial wetlands used by shorebirds plays an important role in maintaining the stability of shorebird population.Satellite tracking technique can obtain high-precision location information of individuals day and night, providing a good technical support for the study of quantitative relationship between waterfowls and their habitats. In this study, satellite tracking method,Remote Sensing(RS)and Geographic Information System(GIS)technology were used to analyze the activity pattern and habitat utilization characteristics of Pied Avocet during breeding period in an artificial wetland complex in the Yellow River Delta(YRD),China. The results showed that the breeding Pied Avocets had a small range of activity, with a total core and main home range of 33.10 km^(2) and 216.30 km^(2),respectively.This species tended to forage in the pond and salt pan during the day and night, respectively, with an unfixed staying time in the breeding ground. The distance between breeding ground and feeding ground was less than 6 km.It is emphasized that in addition to improving the conditions of the remaining natural habitats, effective managing artificial habitats is a priority for shorebird conservation. This research could provide reference for the management of artificial wetlands in coastal zones and supply technique support for the protection of shorebirds and their habitats, and alleviate human-bird conflicts and sustainable development of coastal zones. 展开更多

Mountain streams act as conveyors of sediments within the river continuum, where the physical transport of sediments between river reaches through the catchment or between individual parts(e.g.,between hillslopes and channels)of the catchment is assumed. This study focused on sediment connectivity analysis in the SlavíčRiver catchment in the MoravskoslezskéBeskydy Mts in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. The connectivity index and connectivity index target modelling were combined with an analysis of anthropogenic interventions.Additionally, field mapping, grain size of bed sediments and stream power analysis were used to obtain information about connectivity in the catchment.Based on the analysis and obtained results, terrain topography is the current main driving factor affecting the connectivity of sediment movement in the SlavíčRiver catchment. However, the modelling provided valuable information about high sediment connectivity despite different recent land use conditions(highly forested area of the catchment)than those in historical times from the 16th to 19th centuries when the SlavíčRiver catchment was highly deforested and sediment connectivity was probably higher. The analysis of anthropogenic interventions, field mapping, grain size of bed sediments and stream power analysis revealed more deceleration of sediment movement through the catchment, decreased sediment connectivity with bed erosion, and gradual river channel process transformation in some reaches.Field mapping has identified various natural formations and human-induced changes impacting the longitudinal and lateral connectivity in the SlavíčRiver. For instance, embankments along 48%of the river's length, both on the right and left banks, significantly hinder lateral sediment supply to the channel.Stream power index analysis indicates increased energy levels in the flowing water in the river's upper reaches(up to 404.8 W m^(-2)).This high energy is also observed in certain downstream sections(up to 337.6 W m^(-2)),where it is influenced by human activities. These conditions lead to intensified erosion processes, playing a crucial role in sediment connectivity.Similar observations were described in recent studies that pointed out the long-term human interventions on many streams draining European mountains, where a decrease in sediment connectivity in these streams is linked with sediment deficits and the transformation of processes forming channels. 展开更多

The Ganges and Brahmaputra River system is in the plains of the northern Indian subcontinent. The river is a wide sluggish stream flowing through densely populated and fertile agricultural regions of the world. The Ganges is known as the Hinduism holy river. In Bangladesh, the Brahmaputra is joined by the Teesta River. The western branch of the Brahmaputra confluences with the Ganges and contains most of the river flow. The eastern branch joins the Meghna River near Dhaka. The basin covers parts of four countries including India, Nepal, China, and Bangladesh. Of greater concern, however, has been the degradation in quality of the river water itself. The primary objective of this research is to encourage the development of a multi-country clean-up, mitigation, and protection plan for the Ganges-Brahmaputra rivers. This article constitutes a real tool for the restoration, enhancement and protection of the Ganges-Brahmaputra River system and its environment. The Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers are known for stream bank erosion, shifting channels, and sandbars that continually emerge in their course. The Ganges and Brahmaputra watershed is home to hundreds of millions of people, with the result that the river’s water over much of its course is highly polluted. Arsenic contamination of groundwater in Bangladesh continues to be the largest case of human poisoning in history. Catastrophic floods have prompted the World Bank to prepare a long-term flood-control plan for the region. Scores of cities and towns contribute to treated sewage into the river and its main tributaries, and dozens of manufacturing facilities contribute industrial waste. Also contributing to high pollution levels are agricultural runoff, the remnants of partially burned or unburned bodies from funeral pyres, and animal carcasses. High levels of disease-causing bacteria, as well as such toxic substances as chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, have been found in the Ganges and Brahmaputra. External research and funding of adsorptive media systems to help mitigate the high arsenic levels in drinking water (river and groundwater) is needed. The Ganges-Brahmaputra River system is of colossal importance to its entire environment. Restoration and protection measures must be adopted appropriately and at the scale of the concerned countries. 展开更多

The sand bars, in perpetual transformation, observable in the middle course of the Kasai river on the section between the city of Ilebo (pk605) to the confluence of the Loange river (pk525), pose enormous navigability problems. This may be dependent on hydrosedimentological characteristics of the Kasai River. This abundance of sand thus conditions the morphology of the middle course of the Kasai River in the section under our study. It therefore constitutes sedimentary navigation obstacles. The objective of this study is the granulometric and mineralogical characterization of the bar sands of the Kasai River in this study section. Particle size analyzes reveal these are moderately well classified to well classified unimodal sands (Classification coefficient between 1.29 to 1.742) largely presenting grain size symmetry and rarely fine asymmetry (Asymmetry coefficient—Skewness between −0.197 to 0.069) with mesorkurtic and rarely leptokurtic and platykurtic acuity (Angulosity coefficient—Kurtosis between 0.814 to 1.323). All these parameters evolve in sawtooth patterns from upstream to downstream. And then, an automated mineralogical analysis of the sands of the Kasaï River using a Qemscan FEG Quanta 650 made it possible to determine a very varied mineralogical procession with a sawtooth evolution. It is largely dominated by quartz (between 93.73% and 99.07%), followed by calcite (0.01% - 2.66%), iron oxides (0.01% - 1.88%), orthoclase (0.04% - 0.99%), plagioclase (0.01% - 0.75%) and Kaolinite (0.18% - 0.71%). Finally, this mineralogical procession is characterized by a group of minerals which do not reach the threshold of 0.55% such as: illite, apatite, ilmenite, muscovite, chlorite, biotite, montmorillonite, rutile, pyrophyllite, siderite, zircon and dolomite. The evolution of the mineralogical procession of the sands of the bars is not as clear as in the case of particle size parameters. 展开更多
