Taoism in Lee Ang’s Films

Taoism is one of the oldest orient philosophies. Taoism advocates the respects for individual differences and the diversity of life in both human beings and nature from its origin till now. This immemorial and mysterious oriental philosophy seems hardly to be presented in the films. However, Lee Ang did quite well. To some extent, Ang is the best oriental storyteller in western film industry. In this essay, I will choose three of Ang’s Films to explain how Taoism exists in these works.

Physico-Chemical and Microbiological Profile of Wine Lees of Red Wines from Local Grapes Varieties

In the Republic of Moldova, the viticulture industry is a sector with a high economic impact, and the utilization of secondary products from winemaking represents a growing concern regarding environmental sustainability. Wine lees, one of the types of wine waste, is less studied in order to valorize it. Currently it is used in the production of ethyl alcohol, as aggregates in the soil and others. The aim of this study was to characterize from a physico-chemical and microbiological point of view the lees sediments obtained after the primary fermentation of three types of individualized red wines made from autochthonous grapes varieties. It was found that residual yeasts represent a valuable raw material containing carbohydrates (from 14.35% ± 0.19% to 25.11% ± 1.51% SU), lipids (from 4.61% ± 0.21% to 9.41% ± 2.04% SU), proteins (from 42.62% ± 1.57% to 77.62% ± 9.14% SU), anthocyanins (from 9.18 ± 0.15 to 22.78 ± 1.60 mg cianid) and beta-glucans (from 12.84% ± 0.01% to 17.42% ± 0.02%). The pH value of wine lees ranges from 3.49 ± 0.0 to 3.083 ± 0.01, the dry matter from 9.62% ± 0.22% to 25.06% ± 0.42% and the ash from 0.03% ± 0.42% to 0.035% ± 0.21%. The microbiological study confirmed the presence of live yeasts of the genus Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which remain active due to the presence of residual sugars and oxygen. The results of the research are promising and encourage the obtaining of new products with special purpose and added value.

NEW LOWER BOUNDS FOR LEE DISCREPANCY ON TWO AND THREE MIXED LEVELS FACTORIALS

The objective of this paper is to study the issue of uniformity on asymmetrical designs with two and three mixed levels in terms of Lee discrepancy. Based on the known formulation, we present a new lower bound of Lee discrepancy of fractional factorial designs with two and three mixed levels. Our new lower bound is sharper and more valid than other existing lower bounds in literature, which is a useful complement to the lower bound theory of discrepancies.

SOME PROPERTIES OF DOUBLE DESIGNS IN TERMS OF LEE DISCREPANCY

Doubling is a simple but powerful method of constructing two-level tractional factorial designs with high resolution. This article studies uniformity in terms of Lee discrepancy of double designs. We give some linkages between the uniformity of double design and the aberration case of the original one under different criteria. Furthermore, some analytic linkages between the generalized wordlength pattern of double design and that of the original one are firstly provided here, which extend the existing findings. The lower bound of Lee discrepancy for double designs is also given.

Use of Targeted Orographic Smoothing in Very High Resolution Simulations of a Downslope Windstorm and Rotor in a Sub-tropical Highland Location

Nested simulations of a downslope windstorm over Cangshan mountain,Yunnan,China,have been used to demonstrate a method of topographic smoothing that preserves a relatively large amount of terrain detail compared to typical smoothing procedures required for models with terrain-following grids to run stably.The simulations were carried out using the Met Office Unified Model(MetUM)to investigate downslope winds.The smoothing method seamlessly blends two terrain datasets to which uniform smoothing has been applied—one with a minimum of smoothing,the other smoothed more heavily to remove gradients that would cause model instabilities.The latter dataset dominates the blend where the steepest slopes exist,but this is localised and recedes outside these areas.As a result,increased detail is starkly apparent in depictions of flow simulated using the blend,compared to one using the default approach.This includes qualitative flow details that were absent in the latter,such as narrow shooting flows emerging from roughly 1-2 km wide leeside channels.Flow separation is more common due to steeper lee slopes.The use of targeted smoothing also results in increased lee side temporal variability at a given point during the windstorm,including over flat areas.Low-/high-pass filtering of the wind perturbation field reveals that relative spatial variability above 30 km in scale(reflecting the background flow)is similar whether or not targeting is used.Beneath this scale,when smoothing is targeted,relative flow variability decreases at the larger scales,and increases at lower scales.This seems linked to fast smaller scale flows disturbing more coherent flows(notably an along-valley current over Erhai Lake).Spatial variability of winds in the model is unsurprisingly weaker at key times than is observed across a local network sampling mesoscale variation,but results are compromised due to relatively few observation locations sampling the windstorm.Only when targeted smoothing is applied does the model capture the downslope windstorm's extension over the city of Dali at the mountain's foot,and the peak mean absolute wind.

The energy conversion rates from eddies and mean fl ow into internal lee waves in the global ocean

Internal lee waves play an important role in transferring energy from eddies to small scale mixing.However,the energy conversion from eddies into lee waves in the global ocean remains poorly understood.Conversion rates from eddies and from mean fl ow in the global ocean were diff erentiated using single beam sounding data,stratifi cation from climatology,eddy velocity,and mean fl ow from a global ocean model.The global integral energy conversion from eddies is estimated to be 0.083 TW and is almost twice as that from the mean fl ow.A new method was developed to study the uncertainties of energy conversion caused by dealing with the topographic data.Results show that diff erent data processing procedures,and the resolution and accuracy of topographic data have a signifi cant impact on the estimated global energy conversion.

November 15, 2010 is the memorial day of the 100th anniversary of Academician Li Guoping＇s birthday. We studied under guidance of Professor Li for decades and learnt a lot from his instruction. Like life-giving spring breeze and rain, we have been benefiting from Teacher Li for a lifetime. It has been fourteen years since Professor Li passed away, his voice and expression, personality and charm still often appear in our mind. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of our teacher＇s birthday, we contribute this article to memorize dear Teacher Li deeply.

Extraction of Antioxidant Total Phenol from Lees of Xiaoqu Spirits

By the Soxhlet extraction, ethanol is used as extraction solvent of lees to determinate the total phenol content of Xiaoqu spirits lees. Folin-phenol method is handled to extract and to determine the reducing ability of extraction. The total phenolic content in the most suitable condition is determinated by the Folin-phenol method and the optimum extraction technological condition of total phenol is determinated by the experiment. The experimental results show that the optimization conditions of the determination methods of total phenolic content are determined by 3.5 mL for the Folin phenol reagent, 1:1 for the 10% Na2CO3 ratio and 30 min for the chromogenic reaction at room temperature. The optimum extraction technological condition of total phenol from lees is as following: solid-liquid ratio 1:12, ethanol concentration 100%, extraction temperature 80℃, extraction time 10 h.

In Memory of Baptist Minister Rev Shau Yan Lee

Dr.Shau Yan Lee[李守仁]was a Baptist minister,teacher,and scholar.He worked in China and America for more than 40 years.His text books and audio materials on Chinese language studies were widely used in America and Canada during the 1940s,50s and 60s.He was the first few persons to use phonograph recording to record Chinese dialects and English-Chinese vocabulary.His two academic books How to win the Chinese(1944)and China has a ten thousand mile spiritual wall(1945)attracted a lot of attention in the 1940s.According to the WorldCat,his first book had three reprints between 1944 and 1946 and was held by twenty six libraries worldwide.His second book had four reprints in 1945 and was held by twenty four libraries worldwide.The latter was also gifted and received by President Franklin D.Roosevelt(See Proulx,2006).In this memoir we will give a brief account of Lee’s education background,work experience,academic publishing,and contributions to Chinese linguistics.We will also give a brief account of his families.This account is based on sourced materials and completed to remember his contribution to society.Any information without citation is provided by his two youngest daughters Ding Jung Lee(李定中)and To Jung Lee(李道中).

The Formation of Lee Reversal Flow and Moisture Distribution Effect on the Characteristics of Precipitation

Moist flow over a bell-shaped mountain is investigated using the advanced regional prediction system (ARPS). Three closely related issues are addressed: the upslope precipitation mechanism, periodic evolution of precipitation associated with mountain waves, and lee precipitation induced by reversal flow. The results show that precipitation is strongly the moist distribution and terrain scale dependent. Beginning with the case of uniformly stratified flow over mountain, upslope precipitation and lee wave precipitation pattern are obtained. Most importantly, lee precipitation induced by reversal flow can be caused by layered flow over mountain, wherein lee reversal flow exerts a significant influence on the orographic precipitation.

Enhanced Succinic Acid Production from Sake Lees Hydrolysate by Dilute Sulfuric Acid Pretreatment and Biotin Supplementation

Succinic acid is valued as a potential starting point for the production of chemicals of the C4 family or in the prepara-tion of biodegradable polymers. For sustainable development in this era of petroleum shortage, production of succinic acid by microbial fermentation of renewable feedstock has attracted great interest. In this study, pretreatment with sulfuric acid and biotin supplementation were used to enhance succinic acid production by Actinobacillus succinogenes 130Z from sake lees, a byproduct of Japanese rice wine. Pretreatment with sulfuric acid resulted in little change of glucose, total nitrogen and succinic acid content in the sake lees hydrolysate but had a positive effect on succinic acid fermentation, which caused a 25.0% increase in succinic acid yield in batch fermentation. Biotin supplementation was used to further enhance the fermentability of sake lees hydrolysate. As a result, a 30 h batch fermentation of 0.5% sulfuric acid pretreated sake lees hydrolysate with 0.2 mg/L biotin gave a succinic acid yield of 0.59 g/g from 61.6 g/L of glucose, with a productivity of 1.21 g/(L?h). A 22.9% increase in succinic acid yield and a 101.7% increase in succinic acid productivity were obtained compared with untreated sake lees hydrolysate.
