On Feminism in Literary Translation

The 1980s witness the emergence and development of the cultural turn in translation studies,which closely combined translation and culture from then on,and a new perspective-the cultural perspective for translation studies.The gender issue is an important part of cultural studies.Feminist translation theory states its viewpoints on the role of gender,and approves of translators'gender role in the translation of the original text.In a given social context,the writers and translators of literature are both gendered human beings.Therefore,on doubtfully they are influenced by the political,economical and cultural factors.These will more or less put an influence on the writing and the translating.This paper aims to have a systematic analysis on feminist translation theory and explore the relationship between feminism and literary translation.

Appreciating literary translations as afterlives of the original work

In literary translation, the original was rewritten and transformed, resulting in the rebirth of the original work--the afterlives. Afterlives are embodied in the re-creation of national literature in other countries. With the translation of western novels at the e, nd of 19th century and the beginning of 20^th century in China, the themes in original novels were re-interpreted and re-invented in Chinese context. Moreover, modern aesthetic mode and value became popular, and ancient Chinese language was renovated into modern style. Afterlives can also be seen in the re-translation that is conducted with different interpretation in the same historical period as well as the re-translation that is performed not from the original language in different historical periods. Literary translators play instrumental role as active agents in the delivery of afterlives, extending and growing the original.

From the Manipulation of Literary Translation to the Manipulation of Literary Creation： A Case Study

Manipulation always means a kind of extraordinary alteration for some purposes. All translation implies a degree of manipulation of the source text for a certain purpose. Liang Shih-chiu＇s literary translation serves for his literary creation which aims to promote colloquialism and to construct New Literature in the May Fourth Movement. Literary translation is the foundation of literary creation, or rather, its important strategy. The paper, from the perspective of Manipulation Theory, analyzes the purpose and strategy of Liang Shih-chiu＇s literary translation and explores the influence of his literary translation upon his literary creation in terms of ideology, poetics and patronage.

Freedoms and Restrictions of Translator＇s Subjectivity in Literary Translation

With the translation studies leaning to target-language, the translator＇s subjectivity has been paid more and more attention by translation scholars. It is noticed gradually that translation is actually a dynamic and complex process, during which the translator, acting as a reader of the source text and also a writer of the target text, will unavoidably add something subjective in his or her translation. Since literary translation is interwoven with more cultural and social elements, the translator has to make a choice between loyalty and violation, getting freedom and being restricted when he or she confronts with all the clashes and conflicts between the source language culture and the target language culture.

Research on the Precision Japanese Literary Translation Mode from the Perspectives of Cultural Equivalence and Metaphor

In this paper, we conduct research on the precision Japanese literary translation mode from the general perspectives of cultural equivalence and metaphor. Language is a nation all enrichment culture information, the semantics of the accurate grasp, flexible use of expression, this requires the translator to the nation＇ s culture will have a more profound understanding. Accumulating knowledge of Japanese culture, to understand the background knowledge of the translator of the original has a very important role in the accuracy of the translation in the context of Japanese culture, not in a few words to give full expression to the Japanese national characteristics of the life and customs. Under this background, our research proposes the novel paradigm for the corresponding researches that will enhance our understanding of the Japanese which is meaningful.

Construction of Genre Awareness in Literary Translation Teaching in MTI

Translation studies,as a significant branch of the field of translation,has garnered considerable attention from scholars and practitioners alike.Within the multilingual and multicultural context,literary translation goes beyond language conversion and involves the transposition of emotions,cultures,and styles.This paper delves into the process of constructing stylistic awareness in literary translation within the context of Master of Translation and Interpreting(MTI)courses.It explores the concept of stylistic awareness,its significance,and the existing teaching methods within MTI programs.The paper also assesses the impact of various teaching strategies on students’stylistic awareness and discusses ways to enhance the quality of literary translation education within the MTI curriculum.

Exploring Chinese Experimental Literary Translation： Translation of Latin American Magic Realism into Modern Chinese

The main purpose of this paper is to develop useful empirical research methods to advance the understanding of experimental Chinese literary translation. This will be based on an empirical corpus-based study of two modern Chinese versions of Gabriel Garcfa Marquez＇s One Hundred Years of Solitude. The case study reveals that in translating linguistic events, textual features and cultural phenomena that are unknown to the target audience, for example, magical realism, into Chinese, translators may adopt a range of translation strategies and tactics that lead to significant differences between the genre of the translation and the corre- sponding genre in the target language. New linguistic expressions and writing techniques introduced by experimental literary translation will either be normalised by existing writing conventions or be accepted by the target readership which in turn will expand and enrich the target language and cultural system.

Culturally-loaded Chinese Discourse of Gu-qin and Its Inspiration to Translation——Based on a Maxim from a Chinese Classics The Roots of Wisdom

Inspired by one of the maxims in a Chinese classics entitled The Roots of Wisdom,the present paper borrows the typical culturally-loaded Chinese discourses of Gu-qin — "stringed lute" and "non-stringed lute"—to add to the literary translation terminology and to enrich some Chinese literary translation theories.On the basis of analyzing some related theories in linguistics,pragmatics,aesthetics and communication which show different perspectives relevant with the study of translation,the present paper offers a new angle to illustrate how the Chinese discourses of Gu-qin,rich in cultural implications,can best describe translation and bring new vigor and vitality into the diversity and further expansion of the field of translation research.

Translation as Interpretation

This article is devoted to the study of one of the most important questions of philology—translation which throughout its centuries-long and rich history has been considered a sphere of philological activity of utmost significance providing an exceptional possibility for recoding and bringing philological and cultural traditions within the reach of people at large.Through the application of a variety of methods(linguo-stylistic,linguo-poetic,and comparative),the author attempts to study the process of translation,the clash of difficulties inevitably arising in that process,and offers solutions that will help recreate the vitality of the original and the uniqueness of linguistic thinking.Emphasis on the importance of the consideration of intra-and inter-linguistic correlations of language units in the original work of literature drives the author to the conclusion that the most reliable approach to literary translation is to be guided by the principle of“metaphoric displacement”.

On Causes of the Phenomenon of Oscar Wilde’s Translation Into China Based on Poly-System Theories

Based on a theoretical framework adapted from the theories of Itamar Even-Zohar,this paper puts the translation of Oscar Wilde’s works into the dynamic historical context of the Chinese cultural poly-system and attempts to explore which factors prompted Oscar Wilde’s works to be first introduced and translated into China.

Research on Translation about Movie Subtitle from Relevance Theory——Take Forrest Gump for Example

With China's accession to the WTO and the integration of the global economy, the world is getting smaller and smaller. Translation on film and television drama subtitles plays a key role for cultural exchange. However, the quality of film and television translation is uneven, and the exploration of film and television translation is imperative.Subtitle translation is a special type of language conversion. From the theory of relevance, this paper analyzes the film Forrest Gump as a case, and sums up some feasible subtitle translation strategies. This paper aims at using reasonable theory to guide the translation of film subtitles, and improving the quality of translation.This article is composed of five parts, the first part is mainly introducing. The second part is an introduction to the theory of relevance. The third part is the subtitles translation of Forrest Gump. The fourth part is about the translation of film subtitles from the theory of relevance. The fifth part is a summary.

A Culture Approach to the English Translation of Chinese Literature——A Case Study of Big Breasts and Wide Hips

Literary translation has become the most significant pathway for Chinese literature to enter the world literature scene and compete for international recognitions. In order to present a exhaustive analysis and exploration of the strategies of culture translation, it selects one of Mo Yan's classic work Big Breasts and Wide Hips and its English version translated by American scholar Goldblatt as the case study. It will mainly discuss about the cultural transmission through literary translation and the cultivation of talented translators in order to expand Chinese culture's international influence through improving literary translation.

An Interpretation of Multiplicity and Complementary of Translation Criterion with Reference to the Study on Two Chinese Versions of Ode to the West Wind

The complexity and various intentions or functions of literary translation cause different literary works.The general criteria tohelp evaluate and guide translators to strive for a good translation could be the traditional three principles,these are faithfulness,fluencyand elegance,but it is also feasible to apply some other subordinate criteria to translate or analyze different literary works.The paper fo-cuses on the analysis of multiplicity and complementary of translation criterion on the poem translation,makes comparison and evalua-tion of Gu Zhengkun's Ode to the West Wind(stanza 4&5) with Zha Liangzheng's version,and proves that flexible application of thistranslation criterion makes the translated version truly different.

The Feasibility of the Syntactic Linearity in the Chinese Version of Life of Pie

Translation is by no means a process of bilingual alternating.Practically speaking,translators need to abide by different princi-ples according to different contexts and readers.The emergence of translation theories in the world contributes a lot for cross-culturecommunication.With the development and prevalence of the simultaneous interpreting,people tend to shift their eyes from translation tointerpretation.Syntactic linearity makes interpreting easier and more efficient.However,whether this strategy can be applied into writ-ten translation is unknown.This thesis takes Life of Pi as an example to further discuss the feasibility of syntactic linearity used in liter-ary translation,on the basis of interpreting and translating theories.
