Multi-objective optimization linked with an urban stormwater model is used in this study to identify cost-effective low impact development (LID) implementation designs for small urbanizing watersheds. The epsilon-Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (ε-NSGAII) has been coupled with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Stormwater Management Model (SWMM) to balance the costs and the hydrologic benefits of candidate LID solutions. Our objective in this study is to identify the near-optimal tradeoff between the total LID costs and the total watershed runoff volume constrained by pre-development peak flow rates. This study contributes a detailed analysis of the costs and benefits associated with the use of green roofs, porous pavement, and bioretention basins within a small urbanizing watershed inState College,Pennsylvania. Beyond multi-objective analysis, this paper also contributes improved SWMM representations of LID alternatives and demonstrates their usefulness for screening alternative site layouts for LID technologies. 展开更多

Many cities are adopting low impact development(LID)technologies(a type of nature-based solution)to sustainably manage urban stormwater in future climates.LIDs,such as bioretention cells, green roofs, and permeable pavements, are developed and applied at small-scales in urban and peri-urban settings. There is an interest in the large-scale implementation of these technologies, and therefore assessing their performance in future climates,or conversely, their potential for mitigating the impacts of climate change, can be valuable evidence in support of stormwater management planning. This paper provides a literature review of the studies conducted that examine LID function in future climates. The review found that most studies focus on LID performance at over 5 km2scales,which is quite a bit larger than traditional LID sizes. Most paper used statistical downscaling methods to simulate precipitation at the scale of the modelled LID.The computer model used to model LIDs was predominantly SWMM or some hybrid version of SWMM.The literature contains examples of both vegetated and unvegetated LIDs being assessed and numerous studies show mitigation of peak flows and total volumes to high levels in even the most extreme climates(characterized by increasing rainfall intensity, higher temperatures, and greater number of dry days in the inter-event period). However, all the studies recognized the uncertainty in the projections with greatest uncertainty in the LID’s ability to mitigate storm water quality.Interestingly, many of the studies did not recognize the impact of applying a model intended for small-scale processes at a much larger scale for which it is not intended. To explore the ramifications of scale when modelling LIDs in future climates, this paper provides a simple case study of a large catchment on Vancouver Island in British Columbia,Canada, using the Shannon Diversity Index.PCSWMM is used in conjunction with providing regional climates for impacts studies(PRECIS)regional climate model data to determine the relationship between catchment hydrology(with and without LIDs)and the information loss due to PCSWMM’s representation of spatial heterogeneity. The model is applied to five nested catchments ranging from 3 to 51 km2and with an RCP4.5 future climate to generate peak flows and total volumes in 2022,and for the period of 2020–2029.The case study demonstrates that the science behind the LID model within PC stormwater management model(PCSWMM)is too simple to capture appropriate levels of heterogeneity needed at larger-scale implementations. The model actually manufactures artificial levels of diversity due to its landuse representation, which is constant for every scale. The modelling exercise demonstrated that a simple linear expression for projected precipitation vs.catchment area would provide comparable estimates to PCSWMM.The study found that due to the spatial representation in PCSWMM for landuse, soil data and slope, slope(an important factor in determining peak flowrates)had the highest level of information loss followed by soil type and then landuse. As the research scale increased, the normalized information loss index(NILI)value for landuse exhibited the greatest information loss as the catchments scaled up.The NILI values before and after LID implementation in the model showed an inverse trend with the predicted LID mitigating performance. 展开更多

Background: Plastic pollution is the accumulation of waste composed of plastic and its derivatives all over the environment. Whether in the form of visible garbage or microparticles, as it slowly degrades, plastic pollution poses significant threats to terrestrial and aquatic habitats and the wildlife that call them home, whether through ingestion, entanglement or exposure to the chemicals contained in the material. Unfortunately, there is a lack of documentation on the impact of plastic waste on human health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods: We searched five electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Global Health, CINAHL and Web of Science) and gray literature, following the preferred reporting elements for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA), for the impact of plastic waste on human health in developing countries. We included quantitative and qualitative studies written in English and French. We assessed the quality of the included articles using the Mixed Methods Appraisal tool (MMAT). Results: A total of 3779 articles were initially identified by searching electronic databases. After eliminating duplicates, 3167 articles were reviewed based on title and abstract, and 26 were selected for full-text review. Only three articles were retained. The three articles dealt with practices likely to lead to oral exposure to plastic chemicals in human health, as well as the level of awareness of participants concerning the possible impact of plastic on human health, namely, the use of plastic baby bottles, the use of microwaves to cook food and reheat precooked food, the use of plastic bottles to store water in the refrigerator, water purifier containers with plastic bodies and plastic lunch boxes, the reuse of plastic bags and the inadequacy of treatment facilities. Conclusion: Plastic waste poses different risks to human health at every stage of its life cycle. Hence, strategies must be adopted to raise public awareness of the dangers of plastic waste to their health. Trial registration: The review protocol is registered in the PROSPERO international prospective register of systematic reviews (ID = CRD42023409087). 展开更多

On the basis ofa 2D 4-node Mindlin shell element method, a novel self-adapting delamination finite element method is presented, which is developed to model the delamination damage of composite laminates. In the method, the sublaminate elements are generated automatically when the delamination damage occurs or extends. Thus, the complex process and state of delamination damage can be simulated practically with high efficiency for both analysis and modeling. Based on the self-adapting delamination method, linear dynamic finite element damage analysis is performed to simulate the low-velocity impact damage process of three types of mixed woven composite laminates. Taking the frictional force among sublaminations during delaminating and the transverse normal stress into account, the analytical results are consistent with those of the experimental data. 展开更多

Continuous urbanization over the last few years has led to the increase in impervious surfaces and stormwater runoff.Low Impact Development(LID)is currently receiving increased attention as a promising strategy for surface runoff management. To analyze the performance of LID practices for surface runoff management,a longterm hydrological modeling from 2001 to 2015 along with a cost-effectiveness analysis were carried out on a campus in Dresden,Germany.Seven LID practices and six precipitation scenarios were designed and simulated in a Storm Water Management Model(SWMM).A cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted by calculating the lifecycle costs and runoff removal rate of LID practices. Results demonstrated that the LID practices significantly contributed to surface runoff mitigation in the study area. The LID performance was primarily affected by the length of the precipitation scenarios and LID implementing schemes. The runoff removal rate of the LID practices fluctuated significantly when the rainfall scenario was shorter than 12 months. When the rainfall scenario exceeded 1 year the effects on the runoff removal rate was constant. The combination of an infiltration trench, permeable pavement, and rain barrel(IT+PP+RB),was the best runoff control capacity with a removal rate ranging from 23.2% to 27.4%.Whereas,the rain barrel was the most cost-effective LID option with a costeffectiveness(C/E)ratio ranged from 0.34 to 0.41.The modeling method was improved in this study by conducting long-term hydrological simulations with different durations rather than short-term simulations with single storms. In general, the methods and results of this study provided additional improvements and guidance for decision-making process regarding the implementation of appropriate LID practices. 展开更多

Low-impact development (LID) technologies, such as bioretention areas, rooftop rainwater harvesting, a_nd xeris_caping can co_ntrol stormwater runoff, supply non-potable water, and landscape open space.TillS study examines a hybrid system (HS) that combines LID technologies with a centralized water system to lessen the burden on a conventional system (CS). CS is defined as the stormwater collection and water supply infrastructure, and the conventional landscaping choices in the City of Atlanta. The study scope is limited to five single-family residential zones (SFZs), classified R-1 through R-5, and four multi-family residential zones (MFZs), classified RG-2 through RG-5. Population density increases from 0.4 (R-1) to 62.2 (RG-5) persons per 1,000 m2. We performed a life cycle assessment (LCA) comparison of CS and HS using TRACI 2.1 to simulate impacts on the ecosystem, human health, and natural resources. We quantified the impact of freshwater consumption using the freshwater ecosystem impact (FEI) indicator. Test results indicate that HS has a higher LCA single score than CS in zones with a low population density; however, the difference becomes negligible as population density increases. Incorporating LID in SFZs and MFZs can reduce potable water use by an average of 50%. and 25%,respectively.; however, water savings are negligible in zones with high population density (i.e., RG-5) due to the diminished surface area per capitaavailable for LID technoogies. The results demonstrate that LID technologies effectively reduce outdoor water demand and therefore would be a good choice to decrease the water consumption impact in the City of Atlanta. 展开更多

As an environmental friendly measure Jbr surface runoff reduction, low impact development (LID) has been applied successfully in urban areas. However, due to high price of land and additional expense for LID construction in highly urbanized areas, the developers of real estate would not like to proceed LID exploitation. Floor area ratio (FAR) refers to "the ratio ofa building's total floor area to the size of the piece of land upon which it is built.'" Increasing FAR indicates that the developers can construct higher buildings and earn more money. By means of awarding FAR, the developers may be willing to practice LID construction. In this study, a new residential district is selected as a case study to analyze the trade- offbetween the runoffreduction goal achieving by LID practices and the incentive of awarding FAR to promote LID construction. The System for Urban Stormwater Treatment and Analysis IntegratioN (SUSTAIN) model is applied to simulate the runoff reduction under various LID designs and then derive the Pareto-optimal solutions to achieve urban runoff reduction goals based on cost efficiency. The results indicates that the maximum surface runoff reduction is 20.5%. Under the extremity scenarios, the government has options to award FAR of 0.028, 0.038 and 0.047 and the net benefits developers gain are 0 CNY, one million CNY and two million CNY, respectively. The results provide a LID construction guideline related to awarding FAR, which supports incentive policy making for promoting LID practices in the highly urbanized areas. 展开更多

Areas that are covered with natural vegetation have been converted into asphalt, concrete,or roofed structures and have increased surface impermeability and decreased natural drainage capability.Conventional drainage systems were built to mimic natural drainage patterns to prevent the occurrence of waterlogging in developed sites. These drainage systems consist of two major components:1)a stormwater conduit system, and 2)a runoff storage system.Runoff storage systems contain retention basins and drywells that are used to store and percolate runoff, whereas conduit systems are combination of catch basins and conduit pipes used to collect and transport runoff. The construction of these drainage systems is costly and may cause significant environmental disturbance. In this study, low impact development(LID)methods that consist of extensive green roofs(GRs)and permeable interlocking concrete pavements(PICPs)are applied in real-world construction projects.Construction project documents were reviewed, and related cost information was gathered through the accepted bidding proposals and interviews of specialty contractors in the metropolitan area of Phoenix,Arizona. Results indicate that the application of both LID methods to existing projects can save an average of 27.2%in life cycle costs(LCC)for a 50-year service life and 18.7%in LCC for a 25-year service life on the proposed drainage system, respectively. 展开更多

Different contents of Ni(0.3wt.%to 1.2wt.%)were added to the QT400-18L ductile iron to investigate the effect of Ni addition on the impact toughness of cast ductile irons at low temperatures. The impact toughnesses of the samples at room and low temperatures were tested. The microstructures and fractographs were observed. Results show that with the increase of Ni addition there is a general trend of refinement of the ferrite matrix while the nodule density shows no obvious change. When the Ni content is 0.7wt.%,the matrix structure is the refined ferrite with a very small fraction(about 2%)of pearlite near the eutectic cell boundaries. When the Ni content is further increased, the fraction of pearlite increases significantly and reaches more than 5%when 1.2wt.%Ni is added. The impact toughness at room temperature increases as the content of Ni increases from 0.3 wt.%to 0.7 wt.%,but decreases as the Ni content further increases to 1.2wt.%due to the increase of pearlite fraction. The maximum value of the impact work is 18.5 J at room temperature with 0.7wt.%Ni addition. The average value of the impact work is still more than 13 J even at-30℃.In addition, the fracture mechanism changes from ductile manner to brittleness as the testing temperature decreases from 20℃to-60℃. 展开更多

The mechanical and wear properties of CFRP laminate were investigated using a method of cycling low velocity impact, to study the trend and mechanism of impact resistance of the CFRP laminate under repeated impact during its service process. The interface responses of CFRP laminate under di erent impact kinetic energy during the cycling impact process were studied were studied experimentally, such as impact contact duration, deformation and energy absorption. The worn surface morphologies were observed through optical microscopy and a 3?D surface profiler and the cross?sectional morphologies were observed through SEM to investigate the mechanism of impact material dam?age. Based on a single?degree?of?freedom damping vibration model, the normal contact sti ness and contact damp?ing of the material in di erent wear stages were calculated. It shows the failure process of CFRP laminate damaged by accumulated absorption energy under the cycling impact of di erent initial kinetic energy. The results indicate that the sti ness and damping coe cients will change at di erent impact velocities or cycle numbers. The damage mechanism of CFRP laminates under cycling low kinetic energy is delamination. In order to effectively describe the progressively intralaminar and interlam- inar damage for composite laminates, a three dimensional progressive damage model for composite laminates to be used for low-velocity impact is presented. Being applied to three-dimensional (3D) solid elements and cohesive elements, the nonlinear damage model can be used to analyze the dynamic performance of composite structure and its failure be- havior. For the intralaminar damage, as a function of the energy release rate, the damage model in an exponential function can describe progressive development of the damage. For the interlaminar damage, the damage evolution is described by the framework of the continuum mechanics through cohesive elements. Coding the user subroutine VUMAT of the finite element software ABAQUS/Explicit, the model is applied to an example, i.e., carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite laminates under low-velocity impact. It is shown that the prediction of damage and deformation agrees well with the experimental results. 展开更多

Improvement from the pseudo-elastic effect of shape memory alloy (SMA) on the low-velocity impact (LVI) resistance of a composite plate is investigated by the finite element method (FEM). The stiffness matrix of the dynamic finite element equation is established step by step and the martensite fraction is obtained at each time step. The direct Newmark integration method is employed in solving the dynamic finite element equation, while the impact contact force is determined using the modified Hertz's law. It is found that SMA can effectively improve the performance of a composite structure subjected to low-velocity impact. Numerical results show that the deflection of a SMA-hybrid composite plate has been reduced approximately by thirty percent when the volume fraction of the embedded SMA reaches 0.3. 展开更多

Results show that the low temperature impact absorbed energies of weld metal are (202,180,165 J) of upper samples and (178,145,160 J) of lower samples, respectively. All of them increase compared to base metal. The embrittlement of HAZ does not occur. Weld metal primarily consists of refined carbide free bainite and a little granular bainite since laser hybrid welding owns the character of low heat input. Retained austenite constituent film "locates among the lath structure of bainitie ferrite. Refined bainitic ferrite lath and retained austenite constituent film provide better low temperature impact toughness compared to base metal. 展开更多
