Shear force detection is carried out by using a symmetric piezoelectric bimorph sensor, which provides an easy way not only for probe-surface distance control but also for imaging. Polarization-preserving fiber probes used as a local optical detector are fabricated with a heating-pulling technique and the probes' polarization properties are measured. Shear force topographic and near-field magneto-optical images of magueto-optical disk taken with the proposed method are shown.展开更多

There is a weakly nonlinear relation between electric displacement D and electric field E in the composite. The results of our studies on the effective dielectric tensor and the nonlinear susceptibility tensor in a magnetic nanocomposite are surveyed. It is shown that such a metal-insulator composite exhibits the enhancements of optical and magneto-optical nonlinearity. The frequencies at which the enhancements occur, and the amplitude of the enhancement factors depend on the concentration and shape of the magnetic grains.展开更多

Based on the Kerr effect, we introduce a simple and feasible method for measuring the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of synthetic diamonds. In the experiments, synthetic type I diamond samples and transverse electro-optic modulation systems are utilized. As for the laser with the wavelength of 650 nm, the third-order susceptibility and Kerr coefficient of the diamond samples are obtained at X1212(3) = 2.17 × 10^-23 m2/V2 and S44 = 1.93 ×12^-23 m2/V2, respectively.展开更多

It is found that, combining resonant tunneling-induced transparency and constructive interference in the third-order Kerr effect, a giant XPM can be achieved with vanishing linear and nonlinear absorptions, accompanied by the velocities of the probe and signal fields being matched. Furthermore, this giant XPM could induce a π-phase shift at a single-photon level which is favorable for the applications in two-qubit quantum logic gates.展开更多
