A Comparative Study of the L2 Pragmatic Competence of University Students in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland:The Contributions of Sociocultural Context and Linguistic Proficiency

This study investigates the differences in pragmatic competence between Hong Kong and Chinese mainland university students.Participants included 19 native speakers of English,115 Chinese mainland students,divided into those who had spent time abroad in an English-speaking country(CM A)and those who had not(CM NA),and 97 Hong Kong students,divided into those from an English-medium secondary school(Hong Kong EMI)and those from a Chinese-medium school(Hong Kong CMI).Linguistic proficiency was measured by a C-test,and pragmatic competence by a Metapragmatic Knowledge Test,an Irony Test and a Monologic Role Play.Group scores were compared using ANCOVAs to control for differences in proficiency.The results point to a continuum of pragmatic competence—EMI>CMI>CM A>CM NA—reflecting the groups’access to English in real-life contexts.The differences between the Hong Kong groups and the Chinese mainland groups were clearest in those tests measuring processing capacity(i.e.,Irony Response Time and the Monologic Role Play).CM A,but not CM NA,performed as well as the Hong Kong groups on measures of metapragmatic awareness.The results are discussed in terms of Bialystok’s(1993)distinction between analyzed representation and control of processing.

The progress of strategic environmental assessment （SEA）： Studies and practices in the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan of China

Strategic environmental assessment （SEA） is the process to evaluate, in a systematic way, the possible environmental impacts caused by decision making such as policy, plan, and program. It is of highly significance to improve decision-making. This article reviewed the researches on SEA as well as its practices in Taiwan, Hong Kong and the mainland of China. The regulations, methodologies, and effect of practices were compared. The regulations on SEA had been enacted at three places respectively. With the largest spatial area and rapid economic development pace, the mainland has carded out more SEA practices recently than the other two places, but their final effect still need to be confirmed. It was said that Hong Kong had acquired considerable experiences on SEA, while practice of SEA at Taiwan lagged behind.

The Influence of Vocabularies from Hong Kong and Taiwan on Putonghua

Language is an essential part of culture and life, while vocabulary is the most active component of language and a sensitive element that reflects the societal change. With the economic reforms being deepened in China, there exist interactions and exchanges in trade and culture across China's Mainland, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan. Particular vocabularies used in Hong Kong and Taiwan have a considerable influence on Putonghua along with the wide distribution and circulation of books, newspapers and magazines, films and televisions from Hong Kong and Taiwan. TEXTILE AND APPAREL EXPORTS OF THE THREE AREAS OF CHINA TO THE UNITED STATES

The three areas of China: Inland in China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Taiwan Province, are among the largest exporters of textiles and apparel in the world. They are the largest suppliers to the United States, which is the largest importing market in the world. In this research, export performances of the three areas to the United States are investigated. Analyses indicate that since the 1980s, textile and apparel exports of Inland in China to the US and its market share grew rapidly, while exports of Hong Kong and Taiwan grew much slower, and their market shares declined. Product prices of the three areas in the US market were generally higher than the market average. Especially for apparel, while export compositions of all three areas somewhat leaned towards the lower end of the market, actual product prices were substantially higher than those in the market.

Exploring the Case for Monetary Integration between the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong

This paper presents an empirical investigation on an important policy issue, namely, whether there is any evidence supporting monetary integration between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. We follow two lines of inquiry. First, we present a series of simple tests to find the extent to which trade and/or financial linkages exist between the two regions. Second, we use simple inflation and output differentials and structural VAR techniques to test for the degree of business cycle synchronization between the two regions. The results indicate that there is evidence supporting the existence of trade linkages and that there is also support for the possible synchronization of business cycles. We discuss the implications of this for monetary integration between Hong Kong and the mainland

In about 1949,there was a large-scale migration of architects from the mainland to Hong Kong,China.Among them were those important figures in the modern Chinese architectural history such as Robert Fan,Su Gin-Djih,and Chu Pin.Their arrival at this colony had changed its architectural practice substantially from professional organization to actually built environment.Their unique contributions to Hong Kong’s modern architecture have been a new research interest in recent years.This paper tells a story about Robert Fan and his design of the Chung Chi College campus in the 1950s with an intention to reveal the multiaspects of the so called“migrant architects”through a single architectural event.The author tries to capture the intertwining relationship between the migrant architects and educators through the reconstruction of the recruitment process for a campus architect by Chung Chi College and to identify Mr.Robert Fan’s concept of campus planning with reference to his early design experience in the mainland of China.

粤港澳大湾区建设在塑造中国香港青年国家认同方面具有重要意义。以就读于大湾区内地高校的港籍大学生为研究对象,通过访谈和问卷调查发现,大湾区建设背景下内地港籍大学生具有政治认同度较好、文化认同度较高及国民身份认同度较强的国家认同现状。这缘于港籍大学生在大湾区内地求学时,多元主体围绕其发展需求,以政策吸纳、教育合作、人文交流和生活化传播等四种机制,推进该群体的政治社会化场景变迁,进而对其塑造一种正向的国家认同。据此,应在推进大湾区高质量发展的同时,加强制度改革与规则协调,优化国民教育的课程体系及考核方式,加大大湾区建设的普惠性宣传,借以发挥大湾区在塑造广大中国香港青年国家认同的政策效能。
