With the measurement of dividend payout ratio, logistic regression index value and the firm size financing constraints, this paper investigated the investment behavior of China’s manufacturing firms over the period from 1998 to 2003, and the relationship between financing constraints and corporate investment using the OLS regression method. The empirical evidence shows that there are certain extent financing constraints in China’s manufacturing firms, but the results are different with different variables to measure the financing constraints. 展开更多

This study examines the impact of outward foreign direct investment(OFDI)on Chinese manufacturing firms'financialization and servitization.Using a difference-in-differences approach with propensity score matching,we found that OFDI encouraged firms'financial and service activities. The effects of OFDI on financialization were stronger for firms specializing in short-term financial assets, operating in labor and technology-intensive sectors, investing overseas to pursue production, resources and markets there, and investing in non-OECD and Belt and Road Initiative(BRI)countries.Meanwhile, firms investing overseas were more likely to provide services at the sale or postsale stages.Outward foreign direct investment has also boosted the service activities of firms operating in the technology-intensive sector by investing overseas to seek resources and markets,as well as investing in non-OECD and BRI countries. Finally,OFDI partially influenced the extent of financialization and servitization of firms by affecting their profit-making ability. 展开更多

Using data from the 2012 China Enterprise Survey conducted by the World Bank, this study examines the determinants of intangible investment by private manufacturing firms and its impacts on firms 'productivity in China, thus shedding light on the recent development of intangibles in one of the largest emerging economies in the world. Higher human capital, larger firm size and better institutional quality are found to increase the propensity and the amount of intangible investment, yet fiercer market competition generally decreases both the propensity and the amount invested in intangibles. We provide evidence that the disaggregated components of intangibles are positively correlated with firm productivity and there is complementarity between software and organization investment. Implications for policies to enhance investment in intangibles are identified from the empirical results. 展开更多

Using datasets on high-tech industries in Beijing as empirical studies, this paper attempts to interpret spatial shift of high-tech manufacturing firms and to examine the main determinants that have had the greatest effect on this spatial evolution. We aimed at merging these two aspects by using firm level databases in 1996 and 2010. To explain spatial change of the high-tech firms in Beijing, the Kernel density estimation method was used for hotspot analysis and detection by comparing their locations in 1996 and 2010, through which spatial features and their temporal changes could be approximately plotted. Furthermore, to provide quantitative results, Ripley′s K-function was used as an instrument to reveal spatial shift and the dispersion distance of high-tech manufacturing firms in Beijing. By employing a negative binominal regression model, we evaluated the main determinants that have significantly affected the spatial evolution of high-tech manufacturing firms and compared differential influence of these locational factors on overall high-tech firms and each sub-sectors. The empirical analysis shows that high-tech industries in Beijing, in general, have evident agglomeration characteristics, and that the hotspot has shifted from the central city to suburban areas. In combination with the Ripley index, this study concludes that high-tech firms are now more scattered in metropolitan areas of Beijing as compared with 1996. The results of regression model indicate that the firms′ locational decisions are significantly influenced by the spatial planning and regulation policies of the municipal government. In addition, market processes involving transportation accessibility and agglomeration economy have been found to be important in explaining the dynamics of locational variation of high-tech manufacturing firms in Beijing. Research into how markets and the government interact to determine the location of high-tech manufacturing production will be helpful for policymakers to enact effective policies toward a more efficient urban spatial structure. 展开更多

For some time, two major kinds of Total Factor Productivity (TFP) have existed independently of each other: the Solow residual and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI). The Solow residual was introduced in macro economic growth models, and the MPI has been used in micro economics and management studies. As both indices were developed independently, few studies utilize both together and compare the results. This paper uses the same data to compare the two productivity indices by setting to determine the economic implications of combining the two indices. We discovered that we could decompose TFP with each aspect of the Soiow residual and MPI. We could then interpret their relationship in the business cycle. Our results indicated that the frontier shift in MPI of Japanese firms often occurred when the Solow residual increased, meaning that improving oroductivitv with the Solow residual could be generated by a firm that could shift new production frontiers. 展开更多

This paper examines the effects of firm structure on the financial reporting quality of Nigerian-quoted manufacturing firms by using assets, the leverage, the share dispersion, and the residuals of the modified Edward Bell Ohlson (EBO) model as proxies of firm structure and the financial reporting quality respectively. The data are extracted from 12 sample firms representing 50% (as the population of the study) of all the quoted manufacturing companies in Nigeria. A multiple regression is used as a tool of analysis for the study. The result reveals a strongly positive relationship between the firm structure and the financial reporting quality of the quoted manufacturing firms in Nigeria. Therefore, it is recommended among others that the regulators should enforce more on the financial statement disclosure and transparency among companies quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), in order to ensure a higher quality of the financial reporting 展开更多

In order to provide channels of human resource management in promoting organizational learning, structural equation models were used for identifying the differences in the coupling dimensions between human resource archetypes and organizational learning modes based on sample data of 219 manufacturing firms with more than 100 employees. It is found that the coupling of the cooperative human resource archetype and exploitative learning is reflected in the mechanistic structure dimension;the coupling of the cooperative human resource archetype and exploratory learning is reflected in the two dimensions of the mechanistic structure and specialist cognition;the coupling of the entrepreneurial human resource archetype and exploitative learning is reflected in the two dimensions of generalist cognition and cognitive trust;the coupling of the entrepreneurial human resource archetype and exploratory learning is reflected in the dimension of generalist cognition. When manufacturing firms pursue exploitative learning,it is suggested that they pay attention to the structure dimension management of the collaborative human resource archetype and the cognition and affect dimensions management of the entrepreneurial human resource archetype. When manufacturing firms pursue exploratory learning,it is suggested pay attention to the structure and cognition dimensions management of the collaborative human resource archetype and the cognition dimension management of the entrepreneurial human resource archetype. 展开更多
