Purpose:Digital literacy and related fields have received interests from scholars and practitioners for more than 20 years;nonetheless, academic communities need to systematically review how the fields have developed. This study aims to investigate the research trends of digital literacy and related concepts since the year of 2000,especially in education.Design/methodology/approach:The current study analyzes keywords,co-authorship,and cited publications in digital literacy through the scientometric method. The journal articles have been retrieved from the WoS(Web of Science)using four keywords:"Digital literacy,""ICT literacy,""information literacy,"and"media literacy."Further, keywords, publications, and co-authorship are examined and further classified into clusters for more in-depth investigation.Findings:Digital literacy is a multidisciplinary field that widely embraces literacy,ICT,the Internet, computer skill proficiency, science, nursing, health, and language education. The participants,or study subjects,in digital literacy research range from primary students to professionals, and the co-authorship clusters are distinctive by countries in America and Europe.Research limitations:This paper analyzes one fixed chunk of a dataset obtained by searching for all four keywords at once.Further studies will retrieve the data from diverse disciplines and will trace the change of the leading research themes by time spans.Practical implications:To shed light on the findings, using customized digital literacy curriculums and technology is critical for learners at different ages to nurture digital literacy according to their learning aims. They need to cultivate their understanding of the social impact of exploiting technology and computational thinking. To increase the originality of digital literacy-related studies, researchers from different countries and cultures may collaborate to investigate a broader range of digital literacy environments.Originality/value:The present study reviews research trends in digital literacy and related areas by performing a scientometric study to analyze multidimensional aspects in the fields, including keywords, journal titles,co-authorship,and cited publications. 展开更多

The article displays the possibilities for introducing multimedia production based on computer science to gymnasiums (general secondary school programs), where students who usually continue their education at college are educated. The purpose of the research was to prepare an assessment of the situation and recommendations to gymnasiums on how to improve the situation in this field and what options and opportunities appear for schools and the media environment in which they are active. Special attention was paid to the situation of activities (extracurricular activities and optional subjects) related to multimedia production and uses of ICT (information-communication technology). 展开更多

And, developed curriculums introduced media awareness in schools. Continuously, the Grtinwald Declaration (1982) was the first to state the necessity of media education to promote ability of critical understanding. After dissemination of Internet, information and communication technologies were introduced into media education. And, media literacy and information literacy were intertwined as a MIL (Media and Information Literacy) in the Alexandria Proclamation (2005). Besides, the proclamation defined that information literacy and lifelong learning were the precondition of the information society. Featured importance of applied skill was explained by a disaster case that a girl saved 100 people when the Tsunami hit the coast in Phuket, 2004. Thus, the definition of MIL was frequently up-dated. On March 11 2011, we had a giant earthquake with the Tsunami: Tohoku region pacific coast earthquake. We observed severe damage even under our well prepared disaster prevention drill, earthquake-resistant construction, and communication networks. Through investigation, authors could select records of successful and unsuccessful cases concerning MIL. Then, this study aims to propose expecting what additional competency needs to be introduced in MIL. As a result, the authors could extract "Curation Literacy" that involved decision making process by a user. 展开更多

This study promotes and encourages the use of Differentiated Instruction(DI)in teaching Media and Information Literacy in senior high school among the schools of DepEd Quezon. This action research used a quantitative experimental design in employing the action research framework.Based on the results of the study, there is significant difference between the control group’s pretest and posttest scores based on the T-Value of 3.24 which is higher than the tabular value of 2.05 at 0.05 level of significance at 28 degrees of freedom. For the experimental group’s pretest and posttest score there is a significant difference based on the T-Value of 4.93 which is higher than the tabular value of 2.05 at 0.05 level of significance at 28 degrees of freedom. However, the data between the T-Value of the control and experimental group are that the experimental group has a higher computed T-Value by 1.69 which means that learners have better understanding and learning of the subject Media and Information Literacy if Differentiated Instruction was used compared to the control group without Differentiated Instruction and is of significant difference. This action research had proven the usefulness of DI in improving the performance and understanding of learners in senior high school in the subject Media and Information Literacy.Hence, the use of DI can be utilized in other senior high schools in the country as a method of effective classroom instruction. 展开更多

This article presents the outcome of the Swedish pilot study CESEM (named after the initials of the girls' first names) where pre-teen girls produced their own news program and showed it to their classmates. The methodological approach was the action research model where the process of producing news was followed from selecting news to reflecting on their learning outcomes. The knowledge from the pilot study is useful in designing active projects within the scope of media literacy. One of the learning outcomes for the girls in this study was the awareness of how news programs in TV are staged. A positive response was the initiative from one of the participating schools to start their own news project in one of the classes. A possible outcome in longer run projects is better knowledge for developing pedagogical tools in media education. 展开更多

The purpose of this study is to design a tool, adapted to students' individual contexts and to enable students to reflect on their understanding of media characteristics. AHP (analytic hierarchy process) is a structured technique for organizing and analyzing complex decisions. Using AHP, students have to define appropriate criteria and priorities for using media. It is expected that students" understanding of the characteristics of different types of media will emerge through reflection. Seventy two university students took part in this research. They were asked to prioritize their ways.of obtaining information about current affairs using sets of media such as TV, books, newspapers and web pages, Twitter and Facebook. AHP enables us to visualize a "real" understanding of media characteristics and students can reflect on that basis. As far as "information sources and media" is concerned, a few students indicated that it was the information source itself that was important rather than the type of media. Our tool fulfils the role of encouraging this type of reflection. 展开更多

Media literacy and understanding the digital information around us are an area of communication that affects all of us. How people are represented in the media, social media and our civic participation affect our representations and understanding of the truth. The author would argue through research and practical examples that civic engagement and associations with a peer group can counteract some of the issues facing digital media today. In an age of the so-called "fake news," there are tools we can provide for our teams, our employees, and our collaborators to make sure we are all on the same page and dealing with the same set of verifiable facts 展开更多

Therefore, great and prolonged efforts should be made to govern celebrity advertising in a multi-pronged way: strengthening legal supervision on the basis of clearly defined false advertising; establishing early warning and punishing systems including pre-qualification system, filing system and banning system; promoting public interest litigation system; increasing consumers' media literacy. 展开更多
