The natural frequencies of an axially moving beam were determined by using the method of multiple scales. The method of second-order multiple scales could be directly applied to the governing equation if the axial motion of the beam is assumed to be small. It can be concluded that the natural frequencies affected by the axial motion are proportional to the square of the velocity of the axially moving beam. The results obtained by the perturbation method were compared with those given with a numerical method and the comparison shows the correctness of the multiple-scale method if the velocity is rather small. 展开更多

The main objective of this paper is to investigate the influence of inertia of nonlinear springs on the dispersion behavior of discrete monoatomic chains with lumped and distributed masses. The developed model can represent the wave propagation problem in a non-homogeneous material consisting of heavy inclusions embedded in a matrix. The inclusions are idealized by lumped masses, and the matrix between adjacent inclusions is modeled by a nonlinear spring with distributed masses.Additionally, the model is capable of depicting the wave propagation in bi-material bars, wherein the first material is represented by a rigid particle and the second one is represented by a nonlinear spring with distributed masses. The discrete model of the nonlinear monoatomic chain with lumped and distributed masses is first considered, and a closed-form expression of the dispersion relation is obtained by the second-order Lindstedt-Poincare method(LPM).Next,a continuum model for the nonlinear monoatomic chain is derived directly from its discrete lattice model by a suitable continualization technique. The subsequent use of the second-order method of multiple scales(MMS)facilitates the derivation of the corresponding nonlinear dispersion relation in a closed form. The novelties of the present study consist of(i)considering the inertia of nonlinear springs on the dispersion behavior of the discrete mass-spring chains;(ii)developing the second-order LPM for the wave propagation in the discrete chains;and(iii)deriving a continuum model for the nonlinear monoatomic chains with lumped and distributed masses. Finally,a parametric study is conducted to examine the effects of the design parameters and the distributed spring mass on the nonlinear dispersion relations and phase velocities obtained from both the discrete and continuum models. These parameters include the ratio of the spring mass to the lumped mass, the nonlinear stiffness coefficient of the spring, and the wave amplitude. 展开更多

The non-linear forced vibration of axially moving viscoelastic beams excited by the vibration of the supporting foundation is investigated. A non-linear partial-differential equation governing the transverse motion is derived from the dynamical, constitutive equations and geometrical relations. By referring to the quasi-static stretch assumption, the partial-differential non-linearity is reduced to an integro-partial-differential one. The method of multiple scales is directly applied to the governing equations with the two types of non-linearity, respectively. The amplitude of near- and exact-resonant steady state is analyzed by use of the solvability condition of eliminating secular terms. Numerical results are presented to show the contributions of foundation vibration amplitude, viscoelastic damping, and nonlinearity to the response amplitude for the first and the second mode. 展开更多

To investigate the principal resonance in transverse nonlinear parametric vibration of an axially accelerating viscoelastic string, the method of multiple scales is applied directly to the nonlinear partial differential equation that governs the transverse vibration of the string. To derive the governing equation,Newton's second law,Lagrangean strain, and Kelvin's model are respectively used to account the dynamical relation, geometric nonlinearity and the viscoelasticity of the string material. Based on the solvability condition of eliminating the secular terms, closed form solutions are obtained for the amplitude and the existence conditions of nontrivial steady-state response of the principal parametric resonance. The Lyapunov linearized stability theory is employed to analyze the stability of the trivial and nontrivial solutions in the principal parametric resonance. Some numerical examples are presented to show the effects of the mean transport speed, the amplitude and the frequency of speed variation. 展开更多

Steady-state periodical response is investigated for an axially moving viscoelastic beam with hybrid supports via approximate analysis with numerical confirmation. It is assumed that the excitation is spatially uniform and temporally harmonic. The transverse motion of axially moving beams is governed by a nonlinear partial-differential equation and a nonlinear integro-partial-differential equation. The material time derivative is used in the viscoelastic constitutive relation. The method of multiple scales is applied to the governing equations to investigate primary resonances under general boundary conditions. It is demonstrated that the mode uninvolved in the resonance has no effect on the steady-state response. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effects of the boundary constraint stiffness on the amplitude and the stability of the steady-state response. The results derived for two governing equations are qualitatively the same, but quantitatively different. The differential quadrature schemes are developed to verify those results via the method of multiple scales. 展开更多

In particular, we perform an extended Hopf bifurcation analysis of the system. The periodic orbit immediately following the Hopf bifurcation is constructed analytically for the T system using the method of multiple scales, and the stability of such orbits is analyzed. Such analytical results complement the numerical results present in the literature. The analytical results in the post-bifurcation regime are verified and extended via numerical simulations, as well as by the use of standard power spectra, autocorrelation functions, and fractal dimensions diagnostics. We find that the T system exhibits interesting behaviors in many parameter regimes. 展开更多

The axially rnoving beams on simple supports with torsion springs are studied. The general modal functions of the axially moving beam with constant speed have been obtained from the supporting conditions. The contribution of the spring stiffness to the natural frequencies has been numerically investigated. Transverse stability is also studied for axially moving beams on simple supports with torsion springs. The method of multiple scales is applied to the partialdifferential equation governing the transverse parametric vibration. The stability boundary is derived from the solvability condition. Instability occurs if the axial speed fluctuation frequency is close to the sum of any two natural frequencies or is two fold natural frequency of the unperturbed system. It can be concluded that the spring stiffness makes both the natural frequencies and the instability regions smaller in the axial speed fluctuation frequency-amplitude plane for given mean axial speed and bending stiffness of the beam. 展开更多

In this paper based on [1]we go further into the study of chaotic behaviour of theforced oscillator containing a square nonlinear term by the methods of multiple scalesand numerical simulation. Relation between the chaotic domain and principal resonance curve is discussed. By analyzing the stability of principal resonance curve weinfer that chaotic motion would occur near the frequency at which the principalresonance curve has vertical tangent. Results of numerical simulation confirm thisinference. Thus we offer an effective way to seek the chaotic motion of the systems which are hard to he investigated by Melnikoy method. 展开更多

In this study, analytical and numerical methods are applied to investigate the dynamic response of an axially moving plate subjected to parametric and forced excitation.Based on the classical thin plate theory, the governing equation of the plate coupled with fluid is established and further discretized through the Galerkin method. These equations are solved using the method of multiple scales to obtain amplitude-frequency curves and phase-frequency curves. The stability of steady-state response is examined using Lyapunov’s stability theory. In addition, numerical analysis is employed to validate the results of analytical solutions based on the Runge-Kutta method. The multi-value and stability of periodic solutions are verified through stable periodic orbits.Detailed parametric studies show that proper selection of system parameters enables the system to stay in primary resonance or simultaneous resonance, and the state of the system can switch among different periodic motions, contributing to the optimization of fluid-structure interaction system. 展开更多

Time delay is an problem of intemet congestion important parameter in the control. According to some researches, time delay is not always constant and can be viewed as a periodic function of time for some cases. In this work, an internet congestion control model is consid- ered to study the time-varying delay induced bursting-like motion, which consists of a rapid oscillation burst and quies- cent steady state. Then, for the system with periodic delay of small amplitude and low frequency, the method of multiple scales is employed to obtain the amplitude of the oscillation. Based on the expression of the asymptotic solution, it can be found that the relative length of the steady state increases with amplitude of the variation of time delay and decreases with frequency of the variation of time delay. Finally, an effective method to control the bursting-like motion is pro- posed by introducing a periodic gain parameter with appropriate amplitude. Theoretical results are in agreement with that from numerical method. 展开更多

A new nonlinear integral resonant controller(NIRC) is introduced in this paper to suppress vibration in nonlinear oscillatory smart structures. The NIRC consists of a first-order resonant integrator that provides additional damping in a closed-loop system response to reduce highamplitude nonlinear vibration around the fundamental resonance frequency. The method of multiple scales is used to obtain an approximate solution for the closed-loop system. Then closed-loop system stability is investigated using the resulting modulation equation. Finally, the effects of different control system parameters are illustrated and an approximate solution response is verified via numerical simulation results. The advantages and disadvantages of the proposed controller are presented and extensively discussed in the results. The controlled system via the NIRC shows no high-amplitude peaks in the neighboring frequencies of the resonant mode, unlike conventional second-order compensation methods. This makes the NIRC controlled system robust to excitation frequency variations. 展开更多
