A Hands-on Approach Towards the Application of Research Methods in Academic Paper Writing

Based on an extensive summary of existing literature together with a random sampling of 70 graduate theses at the author’s university and 30 papers submitted to journals,which the author was entrusted to review,the present paper has addressed the novice researchers’common concern of research method application by defining and categorizing research methods and the related terms,combing and discussing the techniques for qualitative,quantitative,and mixed research methods in accordance with different research questions,and finally illustrating and explaining our viewpoints with real-life samples and comments.

What is the Most Effective Method of Error Correction in L2 Writing?

The efficacy of error correction and various kinds of correction approaches is one of the key issues in second language writing faced by both teachers and researchers. The current paper reviews the definition of error correction and examines the different views on whether error correction in L2 writing should be corrected. In particular, the paper discusses and analyses the three common correction methods: direct correction, peer feedback and indirect correction. Teachers are encouraged to weigh and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of these methods according to the current literature, employ the most beneficial error correction method in L2 writing, and adapt its suitability to their teaching context.

A Comparative Analysis of Syntactic Complexity in Applied Linguistics Abstracts Written by Chinese Novice Writers and Native English Advanced Writers

The rhetorical structure of abstracts has been a widely discussed topic, as it can greatly enhance the abstract writing skills of second-language writers. This study aims to provide guidance on the syntactic features that L2 learners can employ, as well as suggest which features they should focus on in English academic writing. To achieve this, all samples were analyzed for rhetorical moves using Hyland’s five-rhetorical move model. Additionally, all sentences were evaluated for syntactic complexity, considering measures such as global, clausal and phrasal complexity. The findings reveal that expert writers exhibit a more balanced use of syntactic complexity across moves, effectively fulfilling the rhetorical objectives of abstracts. On the other hand, MA students tend to rely excessively on embedded structures and dependent clauses in an attempt to increase complexity. The implications of these findings for academic writing research, pedagogy, and assessment are thoroughly discussed.

An Empirical Study on Academic Writing of Applied Linguistics Articles

It has been suggested that Swales’create-a-research-space(CARS)model has had a tremendous influence on genre analysis in EAP and ESP and on the teaching of academic writing aiming at both L1 students or NNS students.In this essay,five RAs from TESOL Quarterly published from 1999 to 2001 will be analysed.The papers were selected because they were close in time and they had clearly defined and labelled introduction and conclusion sections.Based on CARS model,the paper will focus on structure of introductions and examine the link between introductions and conclusions by analysing the structure of conclusions.

An application of Genre-based Teaching Approaches into the teaching of English reading and writing

There are several teaching approaches being used to instruct the reading and writing teaching, such as the product approach, the process approach and the genre approach. In a long period, the product approach and the process approach dominate the field of writing teaching. With the development of genre and genre-analysis theory, we begin to realize that genre-based approach is effective in improving students ’ reading comprehension and writing. Based on the analysis of the theory and on the present situations of college English teaching and personal teaching experience, the genre-based teaching approach is introduced to the writing and reading comprehension teaching.

Preliminary Research on the Mathematical Methods and Order of Problems in the“Fungcheng”Chapter of Yang Hui's Mathematical Methods(1261 CE)

Yang Hui was one of the most important authors of mathematical works during the thirteenth century.Mathematical Methods Explaining in Detail The Nine Chapters(Xiangjie jiuzhang suanfa詳解九章算法,1261 CE)is the earliest extant work attributed to Yang Hui.From the thirteenth to the fifteenth century,this work played a crucial role in the circulation and popularization of The Nine Chapters on Mathematical Procedures(Jiuzhang suanshu九章算术).However,the only surviving printed edition of Mathematical Methods is incomplete and contains many mistakes obstructing contemporary researchers'understanding of this work.The "Fangcheng" chapter of The Nine Chapters deals with problems related to solving what today are known as simultaneous sets of linear equations.However,interpreting the text in this chapter of Mathematical Methods and recovering the mathematical practices relating to fangcheng are difficult.Through detailed textual and mathematical analyses,the author of this paper explains Yang Hufs understanding and practice relating to〃the fangcheng method"and"the method of the positive and the negative".This paper includes an appendix that provides a detailed translation of the ambiguous text relating to"the method of the positive and the negative"and gives reasons supporting the interpretation provided here.Yang Hufs understanding of the concepts of"positive"and"negative"and his practice relating to these two concepts may easily be confused with their apparent counterparts in modem mathematics.Also,careful analysis of the mathematical methods in this work reveal that the order of problems in Yang Hufs Reclassifications of Mathematical Methods Explaining in Detail The Nine Chapters([Xiangjie jiuzhang suanfa zuanlei詳解九章算法纂類],namely,the last section of Mathematical Methods)were rearranged according to commentaries to specific methods that appear in Mathematical Methods.Some textual clues referring to the zzprevious question"(qianwen前問)in certain commentaries of Mathematical Methods indeed reflect the order of problems in Reclassifications.Yang Hui made especially detailed commentaries on the problems that he arranged in a sequence that differs with respect to the original order of problems as they appear in the ancient classic work,The Nine Chapters.All these discoveries reveal and serve to prove a close relationship between Yang Hufs Mathematical Methods and his Reclassifications.

Research Methods and Essay Writing Analysis of MBA Dissertation

Voice is an important topic in academic writing research.Despite increasing research interest,voice has remained a contentious topic.In the article:On the Use of the Passive and Active Voice in Astrophysics Journal Papers:With Extensions to other Languages and other Fields,an interesting hypothesis has been put forward:“Writers of methods sections in this field tend to use we+active when they have made a unique procedural choice or have introduced some technical innovation.On the other hand,the passive seems to be used when authors are simply following established or standard procedures.”Based on the existing research,this paper chooses to study the active and passive forms in the methods section of research articles,and we examine the frequency of the active and passive verb forms in the methods section of two linguistics journal articles.And to verify an old hypothesis:The we+active is used for new stuff,while the passive is preferred for old stuff,this paper will examine the we+active forms and passive verb forms the in methods section in two linguistic journal articles.

Optimization of Process Parameters of Continuous Microwave Drying Raspberry Puree Based on RSM and ANN-GA

To improve drying uniformity and anthocyanin content of the raspberry puree dried in a continuous microwave dryer,the effects of process parameters(microwave intensity,air velocity,and drying time)on evaluation indexes(average temperature,average moisture content,average retention rate of the total anthocyanin content,temperature contrast value,and moisture dispersion value)were investigated via the response surface method(RSM)and the artificial neural network(ANN)with genetic algorithm(GA).The results showed that the microwave intensity and drying time dominated the changes of evaluation indexes.Overall,the ANN model was superior to the RSM model with better estimation ability,and higher drying uniformity and anthocyanin retention rate were achieved for the ANN-GA model compared with RSM.The optimal parameters were microwave intensity of 5.53 W•g^(-1),air velocity of 1.22 m·s^(-1),and drying time of 5.85 min.This study might provide guidance for process optimization of microwave drying berry fruits.

Conformal manufacturing of soft deformable sensors on the curved surface

Health monitoring of structures and people requires the integration of sensors and devices on various 3D curvilinear,hierarchically structured,and even dynamically changing surfaces.Therefore,it is highly desirable to explore conformal manufacturing techniques to fabricate and integrate soft deformable devices on complex 3D curvilinear surfaces.Although planar fabrication methods are not directly suitable to manufacture conformal devices on 3D curvilinear surfaces,they can be combined with stretchable structures and the use of transfer printing or assembly methods to enable the device integration on 3D surfaces.Combined with functional nanomaterials,various direct printing and writing methods have also been developed to fabricate conformal electronics on curved surfaces with intimate contact even over a large area.After a brief summary of the recent advancement of the recent conformal manufacturing techniques,we also discuss the challenges and potential opportunities for future development in this burgeoning field of conformal electronics on complex 3D surfaces.

Improvement of EFL Learners＇ Speaking and Writing through Reflective Scenario-based Learning

Effect of Sr and Ce on Synthesis of Nanometer Perovskite LaMnO_(3+λ)

Nanometer perovskite LaMnO 3+λ, La 0.6Ce 0.4MnO 3+λ and La 0.6Sr 0.4MnO 3+λ were prepared by citric acid-aid ed sol-gel method. The effects of Ce, Sr on the structure and properties of nan ometer perovskite were studied through DT-TGA, XRD, TEM and BET analyses. The r esults show that, by sol-gel method, LaMnO 3+λ, La 0.6Ce 0. 4MnO 3+λ and La 0.6Sr 0.4MnO 3+λ were made with average particle size of about 60, 100 and 30 nm, respectively. After partially substituting Sr on La positions in LaMnO 3+λ, it is found that Sr is l ocated at the perovskite lattice so as to reduce the formation temperature of th e perovskite. As a result, the perovskite has a smaller particle size and larger specific surface area. On the contrary, it is difficult for Ce to enter the per ovskite lattice. Ce exists mostly in the form of CeO 2 as partially substitutin g La in LaMnO 3+λ. The formation temperature of the perovskite increas es, and the catalyst containing CeO 2 presents a larger particle size and less specific surface area.

SOAP教学方法联合Mini-CEX在口腔住院医师规范化培训门诊病历书写教学中的应用研究

目的探讨SOAP[主观资料(subjective data,S)、客观资料(objective data,O)、评估(assessment,A),诊疗计划(plan,P)]教学方法联合迷你临床演练评估(mini clincal evaluation exercise,Mini-CEX)在口腔住院医师规范化培训(以下简称住培)门诊病历书写教学中的应用效果。方法选择2019—2021年在浙江大学医学院附属杭州市第一人民医院接受口腔住院医师规范化培训的52名学员为研究对象,在口腔综合科轮转期间采用SOAP教学方法进行门诊病历书写培训,入科前和出科时分别对其采用Mini-CEX考核和门诊病历书写笔试考核,采用SPSS 22.0软件对考核成绩进行统计学处理和比较。结果Mini-CEX考核包括病史采集、体格检查、辅助检查、临床诊断4项指标,口腔住培学员出科时考核评分比入科前考核评分均有明显提高,其差异均具有统计学意义(均P<0.05)。门诊病历书写笔试的各项内容,口腔住培学员出科时评分比入科前评分均有明显提高,其差异均具有统计学意义(均P<0.05)。结论SOAP教学方法联合Mini-CEX可以有效提高口腔住培学员门诊病历书写质量,是一种高效的培训方式,值得推广应用。
