X-ray diffractometry(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), atomic force microscopy(AFM) and focused ion beam(FIB) miller were employed to examine specimens obtained under different conditions. The crystallization of Mg-based bulk metallic glass depends upon both the aging temperature and the aging time. As temperature increases or the holding time increases, the microstructure of the aged specimen varies from glassy one to crystalline one plus glassy phase and then to absolutely multiphase crystalline one. From the FIB images, it is clear that Mg-based bulk metallic glass could not only crystallize completely but also display dendrite-like growth style. From the AFM images, there are not only significant variations of microstructures but also surface morphology of specimens obtained under different conditions. It is proposed that the surface morphology varies as the treating temperature increases. The Vickers hardness of different specimens increases as the fraction of crystalline phase (s) increases.展开更多

However, slow hydrogen absorption/desorption rate and excessive hydrogen absorption/desorption temperature limit the application of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials. The present paper reviews the advances in the research of Mg-based hydrogen storage film in recent years, including the advantage of the film, the function theory of fabricating method and its functional theory, and the influencing factors in the technological process. The research status worldwide is introduced in detail. By comparing pure Mg, Pd-caped Mg, nonpalladium capped Mg, and Mg alloy hydrogen storage films, an ideal tendency for producing Mg-based film is pointed out,for example, looking for a cheap metal element to replace the high-priced Pd, compositing Mg film with other hydrogen storage alloy of catalytic elements, and so on.展开更多

It is observed that constituent of ZM5 alloy is δ+Mg 17Al 12, that of ZM2 alloy is α+MgZn+Mg 9Ce. That of cladding layer ZM2 alloy(L-ZM2) is Mg+Mg 2Zn 11+MgCe; while that of the cladding layer ZM5 alloy(L-ZM5) is Mg+Mg 32(Al, Zn) 49. The hardness of the cladding area can be increased to values above HV127. Very fine uniform microstructure and the produced new phases of nanometer/sub-micrometer order were obtained. Now, many repaired Mg-based alloy components have been passed by flying test in outside field.展开更多

The solution phases (liquid, body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic, hexagonal close-packed and double hexagonal close-packed) were modeled with the Redlich-Kister equation. The compound energy model has been used to describe the thermodynamic functions of the intermetallic compounds in the La-Mg-Y systems. The compounds Mg2Y, Mg24Y5, Mg12La, Mg17La2, Mg41Las, Mg3La and Mg2La in the La-Mg-Y system were treated as the formulae (Mg,Y)2(La,Mg,Y), Mg24(La,Mg,Y)4Y, Mg12(La, Y), Mg17(La,Y)2, Mg41(La,Y)5, Mg3(La,Mg,Y) and Mg2(La, Y), respectively. A model (La, Mg,Y)0.5(La,Mg,Y)0.5 was applied to describe the compound MgM formed by MgLa and MgY in order to cope with the order-disorder transition between body-centered cubic solution (A2) and MgM with CsCl-type structure (B2) in the La-Mg-Y system. The Gibbs energies of individual phases were optimized in the La-Mg, La-Y and La-Mg-Y systems by CALPHAD technique. The projection of the liquidus surfaces for the La-Mg-Y system was predicted. The Mg-based alloys database including 36 binary and 15 ternary systems formed by Mg, Al, Cu, Ni, Mn, Zn and rare earth elements was set up in SGTE standard.展开更多

Laser cladding was carried out with a 5 kW continuous wave CO2 laser by melting the preplaced powder mixture of Al and Y. Following laser cladding, the cladding zone was characterized by a detailed microstructural observation and phase analysis. Moreover, the microhardness and element distribution were evaluated in detail. The surface modified layer consists of Mg17Al12 and Al4MgY phases, while α-Mg and Mg17Al12 in the substrate. The microhardness of the cladding zone was significantly enhanced as high as HV122180 as compared to HV6080 of the substrate region. The maximal hardness about HV224 is in the interface due to the formation of intermetallic Mg17Al12 phase. The microstructure is refined and Mg diffuses into the cladding material which leads to the formation of Mg17Al12.展开更多

The effects of PdCl2 on the hydriding and dehydriding behavior of Mg-25 wt% Mg2Ni composite were investigated. The absorption and desorption rate of the composite with PdCl2 is fast and the hydrogen storage capacity is more than that of the composite without PdCl2. The maximum hydrogen storage capacity reached 3.48 wt% at 373 K,and 5.05 wt% H at 453 K,respectively. The improvement of sorption and desorption kinetics is attributed to the catalytic effect of PdCl2,and the grain refining and lattice strain introduced by ball milling.展开更多

The effects of different cooling rates on the QC morphology, size, volume fraction and micro-hardness were studied. Multi-component Mg-Zn-Y-based QC alloys were synthesized based on amorphous design principle. QC morphology transformation and its influencing factors were analyzed. Micro/nano spherical quasi-crystals (QCs) were fabricated through a wedge-shaped copper mould and their forming mechanism were discussed by atoms cluster theory, optimum cooling rate theory and the known crucial criteria. The results of research show that with the cooling rate reduced, the solidified morphology of QC phase changes from near-spherical, micro petals (1 to 2 μm) to big petals (20 μm) and finally grows up to bulk pentagon or hexagon (200 to 400 μm). Multi-component micro-spherical QCs possess higher value of micro-hardness than petal-like QCs with the same components, and also higher than ternary micro-Mg-Zn-Y QCs. The fine master alloys containing micro-QCs (0.4 μm) and nano-QCs (about 300 nm and 40 nm) have been fabricated correspondingly on the middle and the tip of wedge-shaped castings. A morphology evolution schematic diagram of Mg-Zn-Y-based QCs is included in this paper.展开更多
