It is experimentally testified that theα-Mg solid solution is not in equilibrium with the Mg32(Al, Zn)49 (τ) ternary intermetallic compound orq quasicrystalline phase, but only in equilibrium with one ternary intermetallic compound Al5Mg11Zn4 (φ). The whole composition range of theφ phase was also obtained at 335 °C, i.e., 52.5%?56.4% Mg, 13.6%?24.0% Al, 19.6%?33.9% Zn (mole fraction). The solubility of Al in the MgZn phase is remarkably more than that in the Mg7Zn3 phase, and the maximum is about 8.6% Al. Aluminum and zinc are simultaneously soluble in theα-Mg solid solution.展开更多

Three kinds of primary compounds with distinct morphology were identified as Mg32(Al,Zn)49(τ), MgZn(ε), and a ternary icosahedral quasi-crystalline compound (denoted with Q). The constituent is found to change with Zn and Al content and their concentration ratio. Alloys with middle mass ratio of Zn to Al and Al content, consist of α-Mg and τ phase, while alloys with high mass ratio of Zn to Al and low Al are composed of α-Mg, ε and a small amount of τ, those with low ratio of Zn to Al and high Al consist of α-Mg with Q. Solidification characteristics and process were proposed. The solidification ranges and liquidus temperature decrease with increasing Zn and Al content for τ-and Q-type alloys, whereas ε-type alloy shows reverse tendency. The second phase transformation moves to higher temperature range when Al content increases and ratio of Zn to Al decreases.展开更多

The tensile tests and the compressive tests with respect to as-cast NiTi SMA were performed to study its mechanical properties of fracture. The microanalysis of as-cast NiTi SMA as well as its fractured samples was performed so as to better understand microstructure evolution and fracture behavior of NiTi SMA. Under tensile loading, the as-cast NiTi SMA shows higher plasticity and is characterized by ductile fracture at 750℃, but it demonstrates poorer plasticity and is characterized by cleavage fracture as well as transcrystalline fracture at room temperature and -100 ℃. Under compressive loading at -100 ~C, the as-cast NiTi SMA is characterized by shear fracture where the normal to the shearing fracture surface inclines about 45° to the compressive axis, and belongs to cleavage fracture where the cracks exoand via transcrvstalline fracture.展开更多
