For the compressive stress-induced failure of tunnels at depth, rock fracturing process is often closely associated with the generation of surface parallel fractures in the initial stage, and shear failure is likely to occur in the final process during the formation of shear bands, breakouts or V-shaped notches close to the excavation boundaries. However, the perfectly elastoplastic, strain-softening and elasto-brittle-plastic models cannot reasonably describe the brittle failure of hard rock tunnels under high in-situ stress conditions. These approaches often underestimate the depth of failure and overestimate the lateral extent of failure near the excavation. Based on a practical case of the mine-by test tunnel at an underground research laboratory (URL) in Canada, the influence of rock mass dilation on the depth and extent of failure and deformation is investigated using a calibrated cohesion weakening and frictional strengthening (CWFS) model. It can be found that, when modeling brittle failure of rock masses, the calibrated CWFS model with a constant dilation angle can capture the depth and extent of stress-induced brittle failure in hard rocks at a low confinement if the stress path is correctly represented, as demonstrated by the failure shape observed in the tunnel. However, using a constant dilation angle cannot simulate the nonlinear deformation behavior near the excavation boundary accurately because the dependence of rock mass dilation on confinement and plastic shear strain is not considered. It is illustrated from the numerical simulations that the proposed plastic shear strain and confinement-dependent dilation angle model in combination with the calibrated CWFS model implemented in FLAC can reasonably reveal both rock mass failure and displacement distribution in vicinity of the excavation simultaneously. The simulation results are in good agreement with the field observations and displacement measurement data. 展开更多

Based on numerical simulations, this study highlights the sedimentation and erosion problems around a sand barrier through the relationship between the shear stress of the surface around the sand barrier and the critical shear stress of sand grains. The numerical simulation results were verified using data measured by the wind tunnel test. The results showed that when the porosity was the same, the size and position of the vortex on the leeward side of the sand barrier were related to the inlet wind speed. As the wind speed increased, the vortex volume increased and the positions of the separation and reattachment points moved toward the leeward side. When the porosity of the sand barrier was 30%,the strength of the acceleration zone above the sand barrier was the highest, and the strength of the acceleration zone was negatively correlated with the porosity.Sand erosion and sedimentation distance were related to wind speed. With an increase in wind speed, the sand grain forward erosion or reverse erosion areas on the leeward side of the sand barrier gradually replaced the sedimentation area. With an increase in porosity, the sand sedimentation distance on the leeward side of the sand barrier gradually shortened, and the sand erosion area gradually disappeared. The sand sedimentation distance on the leeward side of the sand barrier with 30%porosity was the longest. The numerical simulation results were in good agreement with the wind tunnel test results.Based on the sand erosion and sedimentation results of the numerical simulation and wind tunnel test, when the porosity was 30%,the protection effect of the High Density Polyethylene(HDPE)board sand barrier was best. 展开更多

A multi-purpose prototype test system is developed to study the mechanical behavior of tunnel sup-porting structure, including a modular counterforce device,a powerful loading equipment,an advanced intelligent management system and an efficient noncontact deformation measurement system. The functions of the prototype test system are adjustable size and shape of the modular counterforce structure, sufficient load reserve and accurate loading,multi-connection linkage intelligent management, and high-precision and continuously positioned noncontact deformation measurement. The modular counterforce structure is currently the largest in the world, with an outer diameter of 20.5 m,an inner diameter of 16.5 m and a height of 6 m.The case application proves that the prototype test system can reproduce the mechanical behavior of the tunnel lining during load-bearing,deformation and failure processes in detail. 展开更多

In recent years, there is a scenario in urban tunnel constructions to build super-large-span tunnels for traffic diversion and route optimization purposes. However, the increased size makes tunnel support more difficult.Unfortunately, there are few studies on the failure and support mechanism of the surrounding rocks in the excavation of supported tunnel, while most model tests of super-large-span tunnels focus on the failure characteristics of surrounding rocks in tunnel excavation without supports.Based on excavation compensation method(ECM),model tests of a super-large-span tunnel excavation by different anchor cable support methods in the initial support stage were carried out.The results indicate that during excavation of super-large-span tunnel, the stress and displacement of the shallow surrounding rocks decrease, following a step-shape pattern, and the tunnel failure is mainly concentrated on the vault and spandrel areas.Compared with conventional anchor cable supports, the NPR(negative Poisson’s ratio)anchor cable support is more suitable for the initial support stage of the super-large-span tunnels. The tunnel support theory, model test materials, methods, and the results obtained in this study could provide references for study of similar super-large-span tunnels。 展开更多

To explore the cumulative deformation effect of the dynamic response of a tunnel crossing the hauling sliding surface under earthquakes, the shaking table test was conducted in this study.Combined with the numerical calculations, this study proposed magnification of the Arias intensity(MIa)to characterize the overall local deformation damage of the tunnel lining in terms of the deformation characteristics, frequency domain, and energy.Using the time‐domain analysis method, the plastic effect coefficient(PEC)was proposed to characterize the degree of plastic deformation, and the applicability of the seismic cumulative failure effect(SCFE)was discussed. The results show that the low‐frequency component(f1 and f2≤10 Hz)and the high‐frequency component(f3 and f4>10 Hz)acceleration mainly cause global and local deformation of the tunnel lining. The local deformation caused by the high‐frequency wave has an important effect on the seismic damage of the lining. The physical meaning of PEC is more clearly defined than that of the residual strain, and the SCFE of the tunnel lining can also be defined. The SCFE of the tunnel lining includes the elastic deformation effect stage(<0.15g),the elastic–plastic deformation effect stage(0.15g–0.30g),and the plastic deformation effect stage(0.30g–0.40g).This study can provide valuable theoretical and technical support for the construction of traffic tunnels in high‐intensity earthquake areas. 展开更多

Burial depth is a crucial factor affecting the forces and deformation of tunnels during earthquakes. One key issue is a lack of understanding of the effect of a change in the buried depth of a single-side tunnel on the seismic response of a double-tunnel system. In this study, shaking table tests were designed and performed based on a tunnel under construction in Dalian,China.Numerical models were established using the equivalent linear method combined with ABAQUS finite element software to analyze the seismic response of the interacting system. The results showed that the amplification coefficient of the soil acceleration did not change evidently with the burial depth of the new tunnel but decreased as the seismic amplitude increased. In addition, the existing tunnel acceleration, earth pressure, and internal force were hardly affected by the change in the burial depth;for the new tunnel, the acceleration and internal force decreased as the burial depth increased, while the earth pressure increased. This shows that the earth pressure distribution in a double-tunnel system is relatively complex and mainly concentrated on the arch spandrel and arch springing of the relative area.Overall, when the horizontal clearance between the center of the two tunnels was more than twice the sum of the radius of the outer edges of the two tunnels, the change in the burial depth of the new tunnel had little effect on the existing one,and the tunnel structure was deemed safe. These results provide a preliminary understanding and reference for the seismic performance of a double-tunnel system. 展开更多

The Golmud-Korla Railway in the Gobi area faces operational challenges due to sand hazards, caused by strong and variable winds. This study addresses these challenges by conducting wind tunnel tests to evaluate the protective benefits of High Density Polyethylene(HDPE)board sand fences, focusing on their orientation relative to various wind directions(referred to as'wind angle').This study found that the size of the low-velocity zone on the leeward side of the sand fences(LSF)expanded with an increase in the wind angle(WA).At 1H(the height of the sand fence)and 2H positions on the LSF,the wind speed profiles(WSP)exhibited a segmented logarithmic growth, constrained by Z=H at varying WAs.The efficacy of the sand fence in obstructing airflow escalated as WA increased. The size of the WA has a significant impact on the protective efficiency of HDPE board sand fences.Furthermore, compared to typical sandy surfaces, the rate of sand transport across the Gobi surface diminishes more slowly with height, attributed to the gravel's rebound effect. This phenomenon allows some sand particles to bypass the fences, rendering them less effective at blocking wind and trapping sand than in sandy environments. This paper offers scientific evidence supporting the practical use and enhancement of HDPE board sand fences in varied wind conditions. 展开更多

The polyurethane foam(PU)compressible layer is a viable solution to the problem of damage to the secondary lining in squeezing tunnels.Nevertheless, the mechanical behaviour of the multi-layer yielding supports has not been thoroughly investigated. To fill this gap,large-scale model tests were conducted in this study. The synergistic load-bearing mechanics were analyzed using the convergenceconfinement method. Two types of multi-layer yielding supports with different thicknesses(2.5 cm,3.75 cm and 5 cm)of PU compressible layers were investigated respectively.Digital image correlation(DIC)analysis and acoustic emission(AE)techniques were used for detecting the deformation fields and damage evolution of the multi-layer yielding supports in real-time.Results indicated that the loaddisplacement relationship of the multi-layer yielding supports could be divided into the crack initiation, crack propagation,strain-hardening,and failure stages.Compared with those of the stiff support, the toughness, deformability and ultimate load of the yielding supports were increased by an average of 225%,61%and 32%,respectively.Additionally,the PU compressible layer is positioned between two primary linings to allow the yielding support to have greater mechanical properties. The analysis of the synergistic bearing effect suggested that the thickness of PU compressible layer and its location significantly affect the mechanical properties of the yielding supports. The use of yielding supports with a compressible layer positioned between the primary and secondary linings is recommended to mitigate the effects of high geo-stress in squeezing tunnels. 展开更多

Underground utility tunnels are widely used in urban areas throughout the world for lifeline networks due to their easy maintenance and environmental protection capabilities. However, knowledge about their seismic performance is still quite limited and seismic design procedures are not included in current design codes. This paper describes a series of shaking table tests the authors performed on a scaled utility tunnel model to explore its performance under earthquake excitation. Details of the experimental setup are first presented focusing on aspects such as the design of the soil container, scaled structural model, sensor array arrangement and test procedure. The main observations from the test program, including structural response, soil response, soil-structure interaction and earth pressure, are summarized and discussed. Further, a finite element model (FEM) of the test utility tunnel is established where the nonlinear soil properties are modeled by the Drucker- Prager constitutive model; the master-slave surface mechanism is employed to simulate the soil-structure dynamic interaction; and the confining effect of the laminar shear box to soil is considered by proper boundary modeling. The results from the numerical model are compared with experiment measurements in terms of displacement, acceleration and amplification factor of the structural model and the soil. The comparison shows that the numerical results match the experimental measurements quite well. The validated numerical model can be adopted for further analysis. 展开更多

Mountain tunnel crossing a normal fault in seismically active zone is easily affected by normal fault slip and earthquake. It is necessary to study tunnel dynamic response under action of normal fault slip and earthquake. In this paper, a three-dimensional normal fault sliding device was designed, and a shaking table test was carried out to study tunnel seismic performance under normal fault slip. The results show that peak acceleration of lining is dominated by an existence of fault and direction of seismic excitation, not normal fault slip. And the incremental strains of lining in critical zone with 1.7 times fault thickness and centered in faults induced by normal fault slip and seismic excitation are larger than ones only by seismic excitation. And the incremental strains in critical zone increase with the increase of normal fault slip magnitude ranging from 0 to 2 mm. And normal fault slip results in a significant reduction of overall tunnel stiffness subjected to an earthquake. These experimental results provide a scientific reference for prevention and control measurement of tunnel damage under earthquake and normal fault slip. 展开更多

Based on the similarity theory,a tunnel excavation simulation testing system under typical unsymmetrical loading conditions was established.Using this system, the failure mechanism of surrounding rock of shallow-bias tunnels with small clear distance was analyzed along with the load characteristics. The results show that:1) The failure process of surrounding rock of shallow-bias tunnels with small clear distance consists of structural and stratum deformation induced by tunnel excavation; Microfracture surfaces are formed in the tunnel surrounding rock and extend deep into the rock mass in a larger density; Tensile cracking occurs in shallow position on the deep-buried side, with shear slip in deep rock mass.In the meantime, rapid deformation and slip take place on the shallow-buried side until the surrounding rocks totally collapse. The production and development of micro-fracture surfaces in the tunnel surrounding rock and tensile cracking in the shallow position on the deep-buried side represent the key stages of failure.2) The final failure mode is featured by an inverted conical fracture with tunnel arch as its top and the slope at tunnel entrance slope as its bottom. The range of failure on the deep-buried side is significantly larger than that on the shallow-buried side.Such difference becomes more prominent with the increasing bias angle. What distinguishes it from the "linear fracture surface" model is that the model proposed has a larger fracture angle on the two sides. Moreover, the bottom of the fracture is located at the springing line of tunnel arch.3) The total vertical load increases with bias angle.Compared with the existing methods, the unsymmetrical loading effect in measurement is more prominent. At last, countermeasures are proposed according to the analysis results: during engineering process,1) The surrounding rock mass on the deep-buried side should be reinforced apart from the tunnel surrounding rock for shallow-buried tunnels with small clear distance; moreover, the scope of consolidation should go beyond the midline of tunnel(along the direction of the top of slope) by 4 excavation spans of single tunnel.2) It is necessary to modify the load value of shallow-bias tunnels with small clear distance. 展开更多

A series of tests have been conducted using a Cryogenic Wind Tunnel to study the effect of Reynolds number(Re)on the aerodynamic force and surface pressure experienced by a high speed train. The test Reynolds number has been varied from 1 million to 10 million, which is the highest Reynolds number a wind tunnel has ever achieved for a train test.According to our results, the drag coefficient of the leading car decreases with higher Reynolds number for yaw angles up to 30º.The drag force coefficient drops about 0.06 when Re is raised from 1 million to 10 million. The side force is caused by the high pressure at the windward side and the low pressure generated by the vortex at the lee side. Both pressure distributions are not appreciably affected by Reynolds number changes at yaw angles up to 30°.The lift force coefficient increases with higher Re,though the change is small. At a yaw angle of zero the down force coefficient is reduced by a scale factor of about 0.03 when the Reynolds number is raised over the considered range. At higher yaw angles the lift force coefficient is reduced about 0.1.Similar to the side force coefficient, the rolling moment coefficient does not change much with Re.The magnitude of the pitching moment coefficient increases with higher Re.This indicates that the load on the front bogie is higher at higher Reynolds numbers. The yawing moment coefficient increases with Re.This effect is more evident at higher yaw angles. The yawing moment coefficient increases by about 6%when Re is raised from 1 million to 10 million. The influence of Re on the rolling moment coefficient around the leeward rail is relatively smaller. It increases by about 2%over the considered range of Re. 展开更多

The Jianpudong No. 4 tunnel is a shallow tunnel, which belongs to Shaoshan County scenic highway in Hunan province, China and whose surrounding rock is weak. According to its characteristics, the field monitoring tests and numerical analysis were done. The mechanical characteristics of shallow tunnels under weak surrounding rock and the stress-strain rule of surrounding rock and support were analyzed. The numerical analysis results show that the settlement caused by upper bench excavating accounts for 44% of the total settlement, and the settlement caused by tunnel upper bench supporting accounts for 56% of the total settlement. The maximum axial force of shotcrete lining is 177.2 k N, which locates in hance under the secondary lining. The maximum moment of shotcrete lining is 5.08 k N·m, which locates in the arch foot. The stress curve of steel arch has three obvious stages during the tunnel construction. The maximum axial force of steel arch is 297.4 k N, which locates in tunnel vault. The axial forces of steel arch are respectively 23.5 k N and-21.8 k N, which is influenced by eccentric compression of shallow tunnel and locates in hance. The results show that there is larger earth pressure in tunnel vault which is most unfavorable position of steel arch. Therefore, the advance support should be strengthened in tunnel vault during construction process. 展开更多

Large shear deformation problems are frequently encountered in geotechnical engineering. To expose the shear failure mechanism of rock tunnels,compression-shear tests for rock models with circular tunnel were carried out, including single tunnel and adjacent double tunnels. The failure process is recorded by the external video and miniature cameras around the tunnel, accompanied by real-time acoustic emission monitoring. The experiments indicate that the shearing processes of rock tunnel can be divided into four steps:(i)cracks appeared around tunnels,(ii)shear cracks and spalling ejection developed,(iii)floor warping occurred, and(iv)shear cracks ran through the tunnel model.Besides, the roughness of the sheared fracture surface decreased with the increase in normal stress.Corresponding numerical simulation indicates that there are tensile stress concentrations and compressive stress concentrations around the tunnel during the shearing process, while the compressive stress concentration areas are under high risk of failure and the existence of adjacent tunnels will increase the degree of stress concentration. 展开更多

To investigate the zonal disintegration form of the surrounding rock in deep tunnels, model tests were performed in the simulation set-up of fracture mechanism and support technology of surrounding rock in deep tunnel. The test results illustrate that the first fracture of the surrounding rock occurred at the intersection of the tunnel floor and the side wall. After more serious destruction, the side wall and the vault were destroyed.Although the fracture width of each surrounding rock mass was distinct, they were relatively uniform with a nearly continuous fracture form. The width of the split bodies of the model tunnels(i.e.,the annular zonal disintegration area)developed with an increasing load.It was observed from the fitting curves of the data that all radial strain values of the surrounding rock were more symmetric with a smooth fitting curve, and the maximum value occurred near the tunnel wall before reducing instantly. The circumferential strain values were dispersed and the data were inconsistent with the fitting curve, which caused some data to be unreliable. The phenomenon of zonal disintegration was primarily caused by radial tension strain of the surrounding rock. This phenomenon would not extend indefinitely as the rupture range would be limited to a certain extent, because the maximum radial tension strain of the surrounding rock was less than the limiting value. 展开更多

Active faults are a common adverse geological phenomenon that can occur during tunnel excavation and has a very negative impact on the construction and operation of the tunnel. In this paper, the grade IV rock surrounding the cross-fault tunnel with poor geological conditions has been chosen for the study. The support capacity of 2^(nd) Generation-Negative Poisson’s Ratio(2G-NPR)bolt in an active fault tunnel has been carried out on the basis of relevant results obtained from the geomechanical model test and numerical investigations of failure model for existing unsupported fault tunnel. The investigation shows that surrounding rock of the tunnel is prone to shear deformation and crack formation along the fault,as a result, the rock mass on the upper part of the fault slips as a whole.Furthermore,small-scale deformation and loss of blocks are observed around the tunnel;however, the 2G-NPR bolt support is found to be helpful in keeping the overall tunnel intact without any damage and instability.Due to the blocking effect of fault, the stress of the surrounding rock on the upper and lower parts of the fault is significantly different, and the stress at the left shoulder of the tunnel is greater than that at the right shoulder. The asymmetrical arrangement of 2G-NPR bolts can effectively control the asymmetric deformation and instability of the surrounding rock. The present numerical scheme is in good agreement with the model test results, and can reasonably reflect the stress and displacement characteristics of the surrounding rock of the tunnel. In comparison to unsupported and ordinary PR(Poisson’s Ratio)bolt support,2G-NPR bolt can effectively limit the fault slip and control the stability of the surrounding rock of the fault tunnel. The research findings may serve as a guideline for the use of 2G-NPR bolts in fault tunnel support engineering. 展开更多

Tunnel excavation is a complicated loading-unloading-reloading process characterized by decreased radial stresses and increased axial stresses. An approach that considers only loading,is generally used in tunnel model testing. However, this approach is incapable of characterizing the unloading effects induced by excavation on surrounding rocks and hence presents radial and tangential stress paths during the failure process that are different from the actual stress state of tunnels. This paper carried out a comparative analysis using laboratory model testing and particle flow code(PFC2D)-based numerical simulation, and shed light upon the crack propagation process and, microscopic stress and force chain variations during the loading-unloading process. The failure mode observed in the unloading model test is shear failure. The force chains are strongly correlated with the concrete fracture propagation. In addition, the change patterns of the radial and tangential stresses of surrounding rocks in the broken region,as well as the influence of the initial stress on failure loads are revealed. The surrounding soil of tunnel failure evolution as well as extent and shape of the damage zone during the excavation-induced unloading were also studied. 展开更多
