The effect of carbonation treatment and mixing method on the mechanical properties and interfacial transition zone(ITZ) properties of recycled aggregate concrete(RAC) was investigated. Properties of recycled concrete aggregate(RCA) were tested firstly. Then, five types of concretes were made and slump of fresh concrete was measured immediately after mixing. Compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of hardened concrete were measured at 28 d. Meanwhile, the microstructure of RAC was analyzed by backscattered electron(BSE) image. It was found that the water absorption ratio of carbonated recycled concrete aggregate(CRCA) was much lower when compared to the untreated RCA. Comparatively, the apparent density of CRCA was not significantly modified. The concrete strength results indicate that the mix CRAC-2 prepared with CRCA by adopting two-stage mixing approach shows the highest compressive strength value compared to the other mixes. The microstructural analysis demonstrate that the mix CRAC-2 has a much denser old ITZ than the untreated RAC because of the chemical reaction between CO2 and the hydration products of RCA. This study confirms that the ITZ microstructure of RAC can be efficiently modified by carbonation treatment of RCA and encourages broadening the application of construction and demolition wastes. 展开更多

This review focused on rare-earth elements containing inorganic semiconductor photocatalysts for efficient solar energy conversion. We also summarized the recent progress in the modification of the transition metal oxides and mixed oxides with rare earth ions. In the first section, we surveyed a variety of rare-earth elements modified TiO2 photocatalysts. Attributed to the modifica-tion with rare-earth elements, phase transformation of TiO2 from anatase to rutile was inhibited. Furthermore, the light-absorbing property of the TiO2 modified with rare-earth elements was also enhanced. In the second section, we summarized the effects of rare-earth elements on the modification of transition metal mixed oxides. It was believed that the corner-shared octahedral units in the form of networks, chains and slabs within the mixed oxide lattice were essential for the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity. In the last section, the strategy for the design of NIR or IR response upconversion composite photocatalysts was also discussed. 展开更多

A Markov chain model of mixing kinetics for ternary mixture of dissimilar particulate solids

This paper presents a simple but informative mathematical model to describe the mixing of three dissimilar components of particulate solids that have the tendency to segregate within one another. A nonlinear Markov chain model is proposed to describe the process. At each time step, the exchange of particulate solids between the cells of the chain is divided into two virtual stages. The first is pure stochastic mixing accompanied by downward segregation. Upon the completion of this stage, some of the cells appear to be overfilled with the mixture, while others appear to have a void space. The second stage is related to upward segregation. Components from the overfilled cells fill the upper cells (those with the void space) according to the proposed algorithm. The degree of non-homogeneity in the mixture (the standard deviation) is calculated at each time step, which allows the mixing kinetics to be described. The optimum mixing time is found to provide the maximum homogeneity in the ternary mixture. However, this “common” time differs from the optimum mixing times for individual components. The model is verified using a lab-scale vibration vessel, and a reasonable correlation between the calculated and experimental data is obtained 展开更多
