Using examples in biology and mathematics, the mutual reinforcement correlation between the history of science and modern sciences in respect to the method of thinking is expounded in this article. The great value of historical materials to modem sciences is explained by citing instances in astronomy, earth sciences and engineering. The importance of the study of the external history of science (i.e. the sociological history of science) to personnel training and policy formulation is stressed. This article also seeks to make clear that the history of science itself is a modern discipline, which has just taken shape in the world during the 20th century, and that the discipline demands prompt development in China in view of its even later start. 展开更多

This paper reviews a strategic scientific proposal to dig and construct three navigable sea lanes linking isolated inland seas and blocked side bays and linking it with the open seas, to facilitate the movement of free trade and international navigation, and to break the captivity of geographically isolated environments, and to give a strategic advantage to some areas and sectors that are neglected politically, socially, economically and environmentally, and to adopt the strategy of establishing a marine channel between the “Caspian Sea” and the “Black Sea” through the “lands belonging to Russia”. On digging a navigational canal at the lowest cost in a plain area within the territory of Russia, with a length of approximately 600 kilometers (616 km), starting from the nearest bay in the Caspian Sea, passing near the city of “Pyatigorsk” to the city of “Sochi” on the Black Sea, while it comes: -The strategy of the waterway and the sea channel between the “Caspian Sea” and the “Arabian Gulf” through the “lands belonging to Iran” by digging and cutting a path in the rocks with a width of 100 meters and a length of about 700 kilometers, and at a time rate of less than 10 years, and this project will liberate all countries in the Caspian Sea, and the study concludes with the strategy of the navigational channel between the “Arabian Gulf” and the “Mediterranean Sea” through the two countries of “Iraq-Syria”, with a length of about 1350 km, and the world will benefit in the security, commercial and political fields. 展开更多

Heidegger's reflection on modem sciences in his Contributions to Philosophy is a "questioning of philosophy" instead of an analysis of a "problem of logic." Therefore, this Being-historical reflection is an ontological grounding effort of reason, instead of a rational critique of the sciences. Heidegger calls this ontological grounding a "Besinnung" or "mindful deliberation," which is one of the most important words in the Contributions. This "Besinnung" is not only a kind of"philosophy of science," but also a political critique of modern sciences, 展开更多

What Semiotics Is

Charles Peirce compares the action of signs to what our experience of blue would have been had we been born wearing blue-tinted glasses: it is an influence on our experience that runs so deep we do not even become aware of its influence until some circumstance or other forces us to realize its action in shaping our identity and lives. For human animals, it was our becoming aware of the difference between the world as it appears to be in everyday experience and the world as it appears through telescopes and microscopes that, "slow-by-slow", forced intellectuals of modern times to recognize the need for recognizing a point of view that transcended the difference between the critical control of objectification reliant mainly upon "common experience" and the extension of that control to include the "special experiences" made possible by experimentation reliant upon instruments with results mathematically integrated. That realization marked the dawn of the postmodern era of intellectual culture, the era where it comes to be understood that the action of signs(semiosis) provides the framework for the whole of human knowledge, from its animal origins in sensation to its farthest reaches beyond the material world in the contemplation of spiritual dimensions within the physical order of being as independent of awareness by finite mind. 展开更多

Recent developments of rapid prototyping and manufaturing (RP&M)technology are discussed. To facilitate application of RP&M technology as an enabling technology in product development and manufacturing, our center has done a series of pojects covering RP theory (modern shaping science), new RP processes and equipment, rapid tooling technology and rapid product development systems. With the STEP protocol and product modeling technology, RP&M technology can be integrated into CIMS to form a new subsystem, the free form manufacturing subsystem. The subsystem architecture is investigated in this paper. 展开更多
