The Ho/y Bibe, as the root of Western civilization, has imposed great influence in the fields far beyond religion. In this thesis, the author intended to reveal the medical implication in the Ho/y Bib/e and its relevance to the modern medical science by exploring the biblical medical information and comparing it with the current medical theory and practice. The conclusion of the exploration is surprising yet inspiring: the Ho/y Bibe, as an ancient religious book, contains rich medical information around themes such as sexual relations, dietary guidelines, hygiene, etc., which is not at odds, but in harmony with the modern medicine. 展开更多

With the increasing aging population around the world as a result of birth rates and advances in medical technologies, there is an urgent need to unravel the primary cause of aging, in the hope of developing a rational approach to retard the aging process. This is crucial to reduce the societal impact of aging. Although modern medicine and traditional Chinese medicine view the process of aging from different perspectives, this article aims to develop a common understanding between these two distinct medical systems in relation to the aging process. As such, a unified approach can hopefully be developed to effectively slow down the aging process. Modern medicine has proposed the “mitochondrial theory” of aging, which implicates a causal relationship between the rate of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species generation and lifespan as noted in a wide spectrum of primate species, while traditional Chinese medicine views aging as the result of a gradual depletion of congenital primordial Qi, which can be spared by the sufficient generation of postnatal pectoral Qi. By amalgamating the knowledge of modern medicine with that of traditional Chinese medicine in relation to aging, it is suggested that while Chinese tonifying herbs can be used to restore the balance of body functions enabling the generation of sufficient pectoral Qi, active ingredients isolated from Chinese tonifying herbs or other plant sources capable of inducing mitohormesis and mitophagy, as well as senolysis, can be used to retard the aging process. 展开更多

Because their endocrine system is not yet developmentally mature, adolescent girls are prone to dysfunctional uterine bleeding caused by insufficiency of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The view of modern medicine is mainly aimed at the secretory function of sex hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone. However,it causes distress to patients because of the susceptibility of their treatment to endocrine system disorders.Traditional Chinese medicine considers the damage to the function of the Conception Vessel and Thoroughfare Vessel as the key to the disease. In this way,we guide the use of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture and achieve good results. The pathogenesis and management of functional uterine bleeding in adolescence are discussed from two medical perspectives in this article. 展开更多

The medical community as a whole is attempting to start preventive therapy for coronary heartdisease (CHD) patients earlier in life. However, the main limitations of such interventions are drug resistanceand adverse reactions. Additionally, traditional biomarker discovery methods for CHD focus on the behavior ofindividual biomarkers regardless of their relevance. These limitations have led to attempting novel approachesto multi-dimensionally investigate CHD and identify safe and efficacious therapies for preventing CHD. Recently, the benefit of Chinese medicine (CM) in CHD has been proven by increasing clinical evidence. More importantly, linking CM theory with modern biomedicine may lead to new scientific discoveries. According to CM theory, all treatments for patients should be based on patients' syndromes. A recent epidemiological investigation hasdemonstrated that blood stasis syndrome (BSS) is the major syndrome type of CHD. BSS is a type of complexpathophysiological state characterized by decreased or impeded blood flow. Common clinical features ofBSS include a darkish complexion, scaly dry skin, and cyanosis of the lips and nails, a purple or dark tonguewith purple spots, a thready and hesitant pulse, and stabbing or pricking pain fixed in location accompaniedby tenderness, mass formation and ecchymosis or petechiae. The severity of BSS is significantly correlatedwith the complexity of coronary lesions and the degree of stenosis, and is an important factor affecting theoccurrence of restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention. The mechanisms of BSS of CHD patientsshould be investigated from a modern medicine perspective. Although many studies have attempted toexplore the biomedical mechanisms of BSS of CHD, from hemorheological disorders to inflammation andimmune responses, the global picture of BSS of CHD is still unclear. In this article, the current status of studiesinvestigating the biomedical mechanisms of BSS of CHD and future perspectives are discussed. 展开更多

Theword“cancer”is associated with terrifying situations, and there is often an aggressive intent to cure.Uncertainty about survival and fear of disfigurement cause major turmoil in the minds of patients and relatives.Teamwork with multimodal care is the key to achieving satisfactory outcomes.Advanced imaging modalities have aided in early detection and derivation of optimal treatment plans.Although radical excision of tumors with neoadjuvant or concurrent chemotherapy/radiotherapy has long been the best management option,we have moved froma radical to a conservative approach. In advanced disease, the plan should be to provide supportive care and improve quality of life.Compassion and counseling play important roles.Nutritional support for correcting cancer cachexia is equally important during tumor excision.Newer therapies such as targeted therapy, stem cell therapy, and chemodynamic therapy are all focused on ensuring safe and efficient outcomes;however, the war against cancer continues to oscillate between hope and despair. 展开更多

Delaying the onset of aging is considered an important tool for dealing with the global crisis of the aging population.Accordingly, several antiaging studies have been conducted using strategies of modern medicine and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).In this review,we summarize the current state of antiaging research related to both modern medicine and TCM and provide suggestions for further research.Various theories related to the aging process have been proposed, including the free radical theory, mitochondrial DNA damage theory, telomere theory,cross-linking theory, and intestinal flora theory, and a number of antiaging chemical treatments have been developed using modern medicine. These theories and achievements have resulted in major advancements in antiaging research.TCM is based on practical experience and has a long history with unique advantages in antiaging research. Some antiaging practices such as moderate diet consumption, acupuncture,Tai Chi(a traditional Chinese martial art that can relax the nerves to slow down the aging process),and Wuqin Xi(a traditional Chinese exercise to strengthen the body)have been adopted to maintain health.Several TCMs and prescriptions, particularly those related to medicine food homology, have been used in antiaging treatment, and their antiaging properties have been demonstrated to be effective based on pharmacological experiments and clinical applications. 展开更多

Objective:Based on data mining technology, we attempted to explore the medication rules of modern traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)compounds in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment, to provide a reference for clinical drug use. Methods:From 2010 to 2017, TCM compounds used for NSCLC treatment were collected from the Beijing 301 Hospital. The modern TCM compounds utilized in the treatment of NSCLC were established in the prescription database. Excel, SPSS 22, and SPSS Modeler14.2 software were utilized for the frequency analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and association analysis. Then, the quantitative and qualitative analyses of the regularity of TCM compound medications were performed, and the possible mechanism was discussed. Results:The treatment of NSCLC using Chinese herbal compounds involved 231 prescriptions, 389 types of Chinese herbs, and 135 types of high-frequency Chinese herbs. Of these, Fritillaria cirrhosa, stir-baked fried Scutellariae, raw Os Draconis, Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf, and Scutellaria barbata were the top five frequently prescribed Chinese herbs. Among the 39 types of drugs, heat-clearing and detoxifying drugs and qi-tonifying drugs were the leading. Cold, warm, flat, slightly cold, sweet, bitter, and pungent of four properties and five tastes and the meridians of lung, spleen, and stomach were most commonly selected. Factor analysis extracted 12 common factors, and the cumulative contribution rate was 65.595%, which mainly contained tonifying qi and blood;tonifying yin, clearing away heat, and eliminating stagnation;tonifying the spleen, regulating qi, and eliminating phlegm.Forty drug groups were obtained by cluster analysis;a total of 63 association rules were obtained by association analysis. The pairs of Poria cocos→dried tangerine peel and fried Atractylodes macrocephala→dried tangerine peel were commonly used in NSCLC, while the three most frequent herb groups were raw Astragalus→fried A. macrocephala and Poria cocos;raw-medicated leaven→fried A. macrocephala and Poria cocos;and dried tangerine peel→fried A. macrocephala and Poria cocos. Conclusion:Lung cancer is mainly caused by qi stagnation, phlegm obstruction, phlegm, and blood stasis. Based on the principle of strengthening the body and dispelling pathogens, clinical treatment of NSCLC involves clearing heat and detoxifying, tonifying the spleen, regulating qi, eliminating phlegm to dispel pathogens, and tonifying qi and blood to strengthen the body. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)is a treasure of traditional Chinese culture and a gift to the world.TCM tacit knowledge refers to the knowledge and experiences formed in the process of learning and practice of TCM.The objective of this study is to discuss the importance of TCM tacit knowledge in the inheritance and education of TCM.As the essence of the TCM,TCM tacit knowledge has the characteristics of massive, complicated, relativistic, highly individualized, constantly innovative, the dependence of cultural background and the regional environment,as well as difficult to explicate. It exists in every aspect of the TCM theory and the process of dialectical treatment.Besides the traditional master‑apprentice, family‑based, school‑based, and inheritance and education methods, together with the inheritance based on the books, images, and network platforms,in the process of TCM modernization,a variety of modern theoretical models and computing techniques have also been used in the mining of the TCM tacit knowledge. In this study,we introduced the usage of SECI model, complexity adaptive system, latent variable model, and some of the data mining technologies in the TCM tacit knowledge mining. An accurate and efficient inheritance of TCM tacit knowledge is the key to maintain the vitality and innovative development of TCM.Under the reasonable application and combination of the traditional education methods, modern mining methods, and further the artificial intelligence, the explicit and inheritance of TCM tacit knowledge will get tremendous development, and it could extremely improve the efficiency and accuracy of the TCM inheritance and the TCM modernization. 展开更多
