In the large-scale Distributed Virtual Environment(DVE)multimedia systems,one of key challenges is to distributedly preserve causal order delivery of messages in real time.Most of the existing causal order control approaches with real-time constraints use vector time as causal control information which is closely coupled with system scales.As the scale expands,each message is attached a large amount of control information that introduces too much network transmission overhead to maintain the real-time causal order delivery.In this article,a novel Lightweight Real-Time Causal Order(LRTCO)algorithm is proposed for large-scale DVE multimedia systems.LRTCO predicts and compares the network transmission times of messages so as to select the proper causal control information of which the amount is dynamically adapted to the network latency variations and unconcerned with system scales.The control information in LRTCO is effective to preserve causal order delivery of messages and lightweight to maintain the real-time property of DVE systems.Experimental results demonstrate that LRTCO costs low transmission overhead and communication bandwidth,reduces causal order violations efficiently,and improves the scalability of DVE systems. 展开更多

3D Field-Scale Environmental Multimedia System Validation of the Dispersion of Benzene for Trail Road Landfill Site and Its Risk Assessment

In this paper, a new modeling approach incorporating both a new environmental multimedia system (EMS) and the Monte Carlo method (MCM) is developed as a tool for the risk assessment of contaminants. An EMS has been developed and validated by the use of field data and investigation to create a 3D simulation of current conditions of the Trail Road Landfill area. In addition, given the high level of uncertainty associated with EMS practices, the MCM approach is embedded into the developed EMS to deal with vague or imprecise model and site conditions related to uncertainties in the system. In this study, two emission rates were examined for risk assessment of Trail Road Landfill site in the years 2016 and 2026;the data are predicted on the basis of the known production trend from 2001 to 2006. The risk quotient (RQ) factors, combined with present and future rates of chemical pollution, provide spatial and temporal assessment of risk from the leachate in Trail Road Landfill site. Results of the risk assessment approach reveal that as the landfill or oil drilling site becomes depleted, adverse effects on the multimedia environment associated with benzene concentration occur, and the potential risk levels have been quantified for the Trail Road Landfill site. The present study indicates that the dispersion of a large volume of pollutants from the landfill or the oil drilling site poses possible risks to the regional multimedia environment. The new EMS will serve as a risk assessment tool to address the fate and transportation of pollutants in complex multimedia environments. This tool will also be useful in the management of the resulting environmental impacts. 展开更多

The Burst Time Plan(BTP) generation is the key for resource allocation in Broadband Satellite Multimedia(BSM) system.The main purpose of this paper is to minimize the system response time to users' request caused by BTP generation as well as maintain the Quality of Service(QoS) and improve the channel utilization efficiency.Traditionally the BTP is generated periodically in order to simplify the implementation of the resource allocation algorithm.Based on the analysis we find that Periodical BTP Generation(P-BTPG) method cannot guarantee the delay performance,channel utilization efficiency and QoS simultaneously,especially when the capacity requests arrived randomly.The Optimized BTP Generation(O-BTPG) method is given based on the optimal scheduling period and scheduling latency without considering the signaling overhead.Finally,a novel Asynchronous BTP Generation(A-BTPG) method is proposed which is invoked according to users' requests.A BSM system application scenario is simulated.Simulation results show that A-BTPG is a trade-off between the performance and signaling overhead which can improve the system performance insensitive to the traffic pattern.This method can be used in the ATM onboard switching satellite system and further more can be expended to Digital Video Broadcasting-Return Channel Satellite(DVB-RCS) system or IP onboard routing BSM system in the future. 展开更多

Software performance evaluation in multimedia communication systems is typically formulated into a multi-layered client-server queuing network(MLCSQN) problem. However, the existing analytical methods to MLCSQN model cannot provide satisfactory solution in terms of accuracy, convergence and consideration of interlocking effects. To this end, this paper proposes a heuristic solving method for MLCSQN model to boost the performance prediction of distributed multimedia software systems. The core concept of this method is referred to as the basic model, which can be further decomposed into two sub-models: client sub-model and server sub-model. The client sub-model calculates think time for server sub-model, and the server sub-model calculates waiting time for client sub-model. Using a breadthfirst traversal from leaf nodes to the root node and vice versa, the basic model is then adapted to MLCSQN, with net sub-models iteratively resolved. Similarly, the interlocking problem is effectively addressed with the help of the basic model. This analytical solver enjoys advantages of fast convergence, independence on specific average value analysis(MVA) methods and eliminating interlocking effects.Numerical experimental results on accuracy and computation efficiency verify its superiority over anchors. 展开更多

In recent years, the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) has become an emerging business. The most important concept of next-generation network for providing a common global IT platform is combining seamless networks and networked things, objects or sensors. Also, wireless body area networks (WBANs) are becoming mature with the widespread usage of the IoT. In order to support WBAN, the platform, scenario and emergency service are necessary due to the sensors in WBAN being related to wearer&#39;s life. The sensors on the body detect a lot of information about bioinformatics and medical signals, such as heartbeat and blood. Thus, the integration of IoT and network communication in daily life is important. However, there is not only a lack of common fabric for integrating IoT with current Internet and but also no emergency call process in the current network communication envi-ronment. To overcome such situations, the prototype of integrating IoT and emergency call process is discussed. A simulated boot-strap platform to provide the discussion of open challenges and solutions for deploying IoT in Internet and the emergency commu-nication system are analyzed by using a service of 3GPP IP multimedia subsystem. Finally, the prototype for supporting WBAN with emergence service is also addressed and the performance results are useful to service providers and network operators that they can estimate their migration to IoT by referring to this experience and experiment results. Furthermore, the queuing model used to achieve the performance of emergency service in IMS and the delay time of the proposed model is analyzed. 展开更多

Audio highlights detection plays an important role in the cloud-based multimedia service system. In this paper, we proposed a novel highlight detection method to extract the audio highlight effects for the cloud-based multimedia service system using the unsupervised approach. In the proposed method, we first extract the audio features for each audio document. Then the spectral clustering scheme was used to decompose the audio document into several audio effects. Then, we introduce the TF-IDF method to label the highlight effect. We design some experiments to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, and the experimental results show that our method can achieve satisfying results. 展开更多

A high performance ISDN/ATM multimedia integrated access system(THMAS 1) for real time interactive distance learning is proposed in this paper. It consists of remote access units and a central access/switching device. At the subscriber side, the ISDN PRI interface operating at E1 line rate (2.048Mb/s) is provided directly to the termination. When the transmission medium is double of twisted pair cable which has the specification of 0.6mm/22AWG, the longest transmission distance can come to 2.6km. One remote access unit has the capacity of equivalent accessing port of 256 E1s, and the typical capacity for whole THMAS 1 system is 30720 E1 ports. Optical fiber transmission link is adopted between the remote access unit and the central device, and the peak transmission distance under no relay can reach out 60km. To the network direction, a standard ATM UNI interface at STM 1 rate (155.520Mb/s) is designed, so an ISDN/ATM hybrid access system can be constructed. THMAS 1 has the capability of n× 64kb/s (1≤n≤30) ISDN time slots conformance switching, and has the features of small volume, low power consumption, low cost, flexible to reconstructing the network as well as wide coverage of geographical access space. In this paper, we investigate the self-encoded multirate and the multimedia (SEMM) transmission. In SEMM system, the spreading codes are derived from its own previously transmitted bits rather than the pseudorandom code generator. We employ block chip interleaving at the transmitter to combat the deep fading over the channels. At the receiver, decorrelation scheme separates the combined signals not only to reduce the crosstalk between different applications, but also provide a better estimation for the despreading sequence. Interference cancelation (IC) is also adopted to improve both the correlation detection and iterative detection (ID) performance. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly improves performance over fading channels. 展开更多

The Effectiveness of a Multimedia Messaging Service Reminder System in the Management of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Pilot Study

Finding ways of encouraging patient conformity to these programs is imperative. For patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, a condition that causes pain, disability and lessens the quality of life, exercise is essential for effective control of the condition. Aim: to investigate the effectiveness of multimedia messaging services (MMS) in improving patient adherence and functional outcome to home based exercise programs for patients suffering from knee OA. Methods: Fourteen patients diagnosed with knee OA and were referred to an exercise group therapy (for a total of six sessions) participated in this pilot study. The patients were randomly assigned to either the research or control group. The research group received MMS messages additional to the exercise sessions (video of exercises up to 10 seconds in length) to their mobile phone. Outcome measurement included the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) questionnaire, combined Focus On Therapeutic Outcomes (FOTO) questionnaire, Visual Analog Scale for Pain (VAS), Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ) and a general questionnaire. Results: The research group had baseline scores representing slightly higher disability, pain and fear avoidance than the control group as observed by the lower FOTO score and the higher FABQ, VAS and WOMAC scores. Analyzing the difference between initial and final scores revealed that the research group had a slightly higher perceived functional improvement. Conclusions: This study addressed the feasibility of short video messaging via mobile phones in increasing compliance to home exercise programs prescribed to patients suffering from knee OA. This pilot study provides an indication for the potential of success and a larger sample study should be conducted. 展开更多

Multimedia Interactive Informative Systems (MIIS) are software applications resulting from the convergence of multiples technologies such as audiovisual, computing and communication. They aim to transmit information to a large, diverse and dispersed public. As with other mass media, the fulfillment of MIIS goals depends largely on the quality of communication between the system and end users. Therefore, those systems should be developed in order to ensure that this quality requirement is satisfied. If MIIS are constructed according to usual software engineering practices, the analysis discipline of the development process includes requirements identification and specification;however, these techniques are focused on functional requirements, and they do not give much importance to non-functional requirements. In this paper, we propose a development process based on the production of videogames which has two different phases: preproduction and production. The first phase, corresponding to requirements identification, derives into the concept of system. In order to translate this concept into a specification, we propose the use of new communicational attributes and a MIIS metamodel. The establishment of MIIS non-functional specification is the result of analyzing class diagrams through quality attributes. In order to evaluate if the specifications are responding to communicational attributes, a functional prototype is built and evaluated with end users. This research was motivated by the problems confronting the traditional institutions of higher learning in Nigeria which include inadequate funding, lack of infrastructures, inadequate teaching and learning facilities, limited slots for admission known as carrying capacity, a limited number of lecturers/instructors in the tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The objective of this research is to develop a multimedia based virtual learning system for Nigerian tertiary institutions to be used in academic processes for teaching and learning. The methodology used is Object Oriented Design Methodology (OODM) with the following web development tools PHP, JavaScript, Bootstrap 3, HTML5, CSS4, Apache, and MYSQL as database. The expected result is a multimedia based virtual learning system for tertiary institutions in Nigeria which is cost effective, innovative, vibrant, individualized, learner-centric, available anytime, any place even with mobile devices. It was concluded that multimedia based virtual learning system is a veritable tool for Nigerian tertiary institutions, which when fully implemented by Nigerian tertiary institutions would help to increase the number of candidates that are given admission into our tertiary institutions and drastically reduce school dropouts as a result of candidates not gaining admission due to insufficient tertiary institutions/carrying capacity. 展开更多
