This paper discusses a class of interval alignment (IA) scheduling policies, which are particularly effective for the systems that do not have Markovian structure. The numerical results show that IA policies effectively smooth part flows, improve performance and decrease average Work-in-Process (WlP) by adding intermediate delays to the system, The boundary of IA policy is proven and the applications of IA policy in the system with multiple stream arrivals have been discussed. With the combination of release policy, it is practical to implement IA to multiple stream arrival system. 展开更多

Optimal Rate Allocation Algorithm for Multiple Source Video Streaming

Video streaming is one of the most important applications used in the best-effort Internet. This paper presents a new scheme for multiple source video streaming in which the traditional fine granular scal-able coding was rebuilt into a multiple sub-streams based transmission model. A peak signal to noise ratio based stream rate allocation algorithm was then developed based on the transmission model. In tests, the algorithm performance is about 1 dB higher than that of a uniform rate allocation algorithm. Therefore, this scheme can overcome bottlenecks along a single link and smooth jitter to achieve high quality and stable video. 展开更多

The effects of three factors (i.e., drop height h, hopper outlet diameter do, and material temperature T] on the dust generation rate derived from a free falling particle stream were investigated via filll factorial experiments. The correlation between the three factors and dust generation rate was also analysed. Results show that Tand h affect the first fugitive dust rate largely, whereas the second fugitive dust rate is mainly dominated by h and do. Through analysing the first fugitive dust percentage data, it is found that h and T should be considered first for higher temperatures and lower flow rates, whereas h and do can be considered under contrasting conditions, and h should be controlled in the remaining two sets of conditions. Relationships between the influencing factors and total and first fugitive dust rates were developed via multiple regression to quantify the dust emission rates for different contact surfaces (rigid or water). 展开更多

Usually a single MPEG2 video encoder chip realizes the multiple post stage tasks of motion estimation, such as motion vector refinement and prediction error generation, using multiple hardware modules. This paper proposes a new architecture using only a single module to implement the post stage tasks of motion estimation, which has a single instruction stream over multiple data streams (SIMD). The new architecture is simple and more regular; capable of providing sufficient computational power and of adapting to the encoding flexibility required by the MPEG2 standard. Therefore, it is a more suitable architecture for the system on a chip. NEL Corporation (NTT Electronics, Japan) has integrated a circuit based on this architecture into the single MPEG2 MP@ML encoder chip, which uses the multiresolution telescopic search motion estimation algorithm. Using 0.25 μm CMOS, four metal layer technology, this circuit has 15.4 M gates with an area of about 29 mm 2. The operating clock frequency is 81 MHz. 展开更多
