Using Multiple Intelligences Approach in Designing Classroom Activities

This theory states that people have a unique blend of capabilities and skills (intelligences). ... In 1983, Horward Gardner, a professor of education at Harvard Universiy introduced the theory of Multiple Intelligence. This theory states that people have a unique blend of capabilities and skills (intelligences). In the classroom context, it implies that students possess different kinds of minds and therefore learn, remember, perform, and understand in different ways. Based on the theory, Gardner challenged the previous practices that gauged intelligence using IQ test which focused more on the ability to use language and/or logic. According to him, the measurement of people's intelligence should not be limited to linguistic and logical-mathematical abilities only, but should also cover other abilities. In addition to language and logic, Gardner proposed six other intelligences, which in the past were known as aptitudes or interests, namely: Visual-Spatial Intelligence, Musical Intelligence, Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence, Intrapersonal Intelligence, Interpersonal Intelligence, and Naturalist Intelligence. As an English teacher, we often have to deal with the fact that our classes consist of students who posses different intelligences. To help the students reach their maximum learning potential, teacher needs to respect students' uniqueness and accommodate the variety of intelligences. This article try to find out the problems that a teacher may come across when applying MI in the classroom through a case study about an unsuccessful teaching practice, and try to provide a solution as how to make use of MI in classroom correctly. The researcher's premise was that given what we were informed about the educational needs of second language learners, the teachers must be better aware of the students diversity and apply accordingly multifarious activities to suit students' linguistic, cultural and cognitive need. Results of the study indicated that students did have different preferred intelligences. However, if the MI based lesson was not conducted with enough preparation before hand, the students' diverse intelligence cannot be fully developed thus makes the theory failed to further implemented. 展开更多

This study investigates the relationship of learning strategies and styles on language learning and shows how different learning materials according to students' adoptions of them. And it especially focuses on analyzing and understanding how M.I. (Multiple Intelligences), as a strategy, influence on language learning. For research method, this study adopts the observations of the classroom teachings and interviews with the students. As a result, the findings show that first, there are not enough clear explanation on relationship of strategies and styles, but overall, certain factors as verbal-linguistic and interpersonal intelligences help language learners improve their language ability. Second, the use of learning strategies has a positive effect on language learning. Third, the use of learning strategies can be trained and encouraged in language classrooms. Fourth, the appropriate learning materials should be selected according to learners' strategies and styles so that learning is more effective and successful. Finally, the implications of these findings are discussed. 展开更多

Mission planning was thoroughly studied in the areas of multiple intelligent agent systems,such as multiple unmanned air vehicles,and multiple processor systems.However,it still faces challenges due to the system complexity,the execution order constraints,and the dynamic environment uncertainty.To address it,a coordinated dynamic mission planning scheme is proposed utilizing the method of the weighted AND/OR tree and the AOE-Network.In the scheme,the mission is decomposed into a time-constraint weighted AND/OR tree,which is converted into an AOE-Network for mission planning.Then,a dynamic planning algorithm is designed which uses task subcontracting and dynamic re-decomposition to coordinate conflicts.The scheme can reduce the task complexity and its execution time by implementing real-time dynamic re-planning.The simulation proves the effectiveness of this approach. 展开更多
