This paper makes a comparative study of three Chinese versions of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four by applying the theories and methodologies of literary stylistics and narratology. The study first scrutinizes the distinctive stylistic features and narrative forms of the source text(ST)and then continues to examine whether these features and forms are successfully represented in the target text(TT).Moreover,it seeks to answer the questions of why“deceptive equivalence”occurs and how the“literariness”in the fiction can be retained and stylistic equivalence can be achieved in translation. 展开更多

This paper presents an effort to clarify the conceptual confusion of the translator's voice.Drawing on the the theoretical integration of narrative theories and translation studies. It begins with a sketch of the conceptual development of the translator's voice. The major finding of the paper is that the significance of the translator's voice has long been interpreted in a one-sided way, tracing the translator's voice is not only a way of perceiving the translator's subjectivity, but also a perspective from which the implication of the interrelations between the translator's use of language and the translator's subject positions for the target- reader may be better observed and understood. 展开更多

Middlemarch is considered Eliot's one of the most controversial novels. Most critics apply feminist criticism to unscramble the novel and draw that it's a comedown of feminist fight and a loss of feminist discursive authority for the protagonist Dorothea hides in the protection of marriage. The paper aims to employ the theory of feminist narratology to reinterpret Middlemarch. Through the analysis of the two marriages of Dorothea, the dissertation draws the conclusion that Eliot manages to win the discursive authority in a man-dominating era, and the authority is based on a dual voice-the voice of a woman writing in the name and company of men. 展开更多

Faulkner is a modernist literary master who applied many av-ant-guard writing techniques, such as stream of consciousness and multiple points of view, into his novels. This thesis is trying to elaborate more on his spatial narrative and the particular effects it produces with the help of the theories proposed by scholars and experts in spatial narratology. All instances employed to support my view are cited from A Rose for Emily. This thesis pins down questions, such as"How did Faulkner break the continual flow of time?",for example,by disrupting the chronic order we have already got accustomed to when told a story,by connecting key events through their natural relations and the free association of memory,by formulating special bond between Emily and her archaic house,by creating"contexts"which strengthen the integration of scenes with characters, and which thereby mitigate the effect time is supposed to have on the process of narration, and so on. 展开更多

The complexity of online narratives and their important influence on events, attitudes, and emotions in society make visible certain limitations in the explication of such narratives found in traditional narrative theory.Their generative mechanism provides the logical starting point for understanding online communication.Event correlatives, text assemblage and specific texts,as the organic structure of online narratives, shape the intertextual existence and dynamic accumulation of the online text.A universal multidirectional co-construction forms around event correlatives and between specific texts and the pre-text,post-text and synchronous text within the text assemblage, while the textual object, the communicating subject and the online group communication context together build up the interpretive system of online narrative meanings. The generative mechanism and vitality of online narratives not only provide guarantees for the active nature of online communication, but also become a huge variable in social development, profoundly influencing social communication and even our way of thinking. 展开更多

In this paper I will consider the intersection between family tragedy, trauma, and affective uses of narration in two Australian novels:Surrender(Hartnett,2005)and The Danger Game(Ashton,2009).In both of these novels, narratological techniques are utilised to represent a grief beyond words—the tragic loss of a close family member, specifically,a sibling. Both novels use disruptions in narrative forms—particularly in the inherent expectations readers bring to the forms of first, second and third person narration. These narrative disruptions mirror the disruptions of identity experienced by the characters in these texts. Moreover,as we engage with the traumatic content through a fractured subjectivity presented by these texts, our identities as readers, too, become fractured and disrupted. These disruptions of identity echo that which is experienced by the characters themselves through their loss.By analysing the link between these disruptions and the content of these novels,we get a better understanding of the ways in which f ictive worlds can represent psychological issues. The narration of these novels and their engagement with childhood sibling loss enable us to begin to create and understand a broader aesthetic of representational trauma. 展开更多
